| 1 | Mitigation of lake eutrophication:Loosen nitrogen control and focus on phosphorus abatement显示文摘Traditionally,nitrogen control is generally considered an important component of reducing lake eutrophication and cyanobacteria blooms.However,this viewpoint is refuted recently by researchers in China and North America.In the present paper,the traditional viewpoint of nitrogen control is pointed out to lack a scientific basis:the N/P hypothesis is just a subjective assumption;bottle bioassay experiments fail to simulate the natural process of nitrogen fixation.Our multi-year comparative research in more than 40 Yangtze lakes indicates that phosphorus is the key factor determining phytoplankton growth regardless of nitrogen concentrations and that total phytoplankton biomass is determined by total phosphorus and not by total nitrogen concentrations.These results imply that,in the field,nitrogen control will not decrease phytoplankton biomass.This finding is supported by a long-term whole-lake experiment from North America.These outcomes can be generalized in terms that a reduction in nitrogen loading may not decrease the biomass of total phy-toplankton as it can stimulate blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria.To mitigate eutrophication,it is not nitrogen but phosphorus that should be reduced,unless nitrogen concentrations are too high to induce direct toxic impacts on human beings or other organisms.Finally,details are provided on how to reduce controls on nitrogen and how to mitigate eutrophication. | Haijun Wang,Hongzhu Wang Institute of Hydrobiology,The Chinese Academy of Sciences,Wuhan 430072,China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,10: | 38 |
| 2 | Expression and significance of new inhibitor of apoptosis protein survivin in hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To investigate expression and significance of inhibitor of apoptosis protein survivin in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: The expression of survivin and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was investigated in 38cases of HCC tissues and 38 liver cirrhosis tissues by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The relationship between the expression of survivin and clinicopathological factors of HCC was analyzed.RESULTS: Survivin protein was detected in 23 (60.5%)of 38 HCCs and 3 (7.9%) of 38 liver cirrhosis tissues. In 23 cases of HCC which expressed survivin, the expression of VEGF was positive in 18 cases and slight positive or negative in 5 cases. While in 15 cases of HCC which did not express survivin, 12 cases did not express or slightly expressed, and 3 cases expressed VEGF. In liver cirrhosis tissues, the expression of VEGF was as follows: 24 cases were negative, 10 cases were weak positive and 4 cases were strong positive. The expression of survivin was coincident with the expression of VEGF in HCC (P<0.01).The expression of survivin in HCC had no relationship with the patients' age, gender, tumor size and differentiation level of HCC, while it was related to the metastasis of HCC. The protein quantitative analysis by Western blot also showed that overexpression of survivin in HCC was closely correlated to the expression of VEGF (P<0.01).Furthermore, stronger expression of survivin and VEGF was also found in patients with metastasis rather than in those with no metastasis (P<0.01).CONCLUSION: Survivin plays a pivotal role in the metastasis of HCC, and it has some correlation with tumorigenesis. The expression of survivin in the primary lesion is very useful as an indicator for metastasis and prognosis of HCC. | 3 | Involvement of extracellular signal-regulated kinase/mitogenactivated protein kinase pathway in multidrug resistance induced by HBx in hepatoma cell line显示文摘AIM: To investigate the molecular mechanism of the influence of HBx protein on multidrug resistance associated genes: multidrug resistance 1 (MDR-1), multidrug related protein (MRP-1), lung resistance related protein (LRP) in hepatoma cells and the potential role of extracellular signal-regulated kinase/mitogen-activated protein kinase (ERK/MAPK) pathway in this process.METHODS: A cell model stably expressing the HBx protein was established by liposome-mediated transfection of HBx gene into HepG2 cell line. The expression of multidrug resistance associated genes and proteins was detected by RT-PCR and Western blot. AnnexinV-FITC/PI assay was used to confirm the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype of transfected cells by fluorescence cytometry (FACS). The ERK/MAPK pathway activation was measured by Western blot through comparing the ratio of phosphorylation of ERK/MAPK to total ERK/MAPK protein. After treated with the ERK/MAPK pathway inhibitor U0126, the HBx-expressing cells were harvested. Then RT-PCR, Western blot and FACS were used to analyze the alterations in the expression of multidrug resistance associated genes and the MDR phenotype after exposure.RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the transfected cells showed a higher expression of MDR associated genes and proteins. Marked elevations in MDR-1 (64.3%), MRP-1 (87.5%) and LRP (90.8%) were observed in the transfected cells (P<0.05). RT-PCR revealed that the over-expression of MDR associated proteins was due to amplification of such genes (MDR1 2.9 fold, MRP1 1.67 fold, LRP1.95 fold).Furthermore, we found that the ERK/MAPK activity was remarkably high in the HBx-expressing cells. The activation of ERK/MAPK, as measured by the ratio of phosphorylated ERK bands normalized to the total ERK bands, was increased by 2.3-fold in HBx-transfected cells compared with cells transfected with the empty vector. After treated with the ERK/MAPK pathway inhibitor, the level of MDR associated genes and proteins in the transfected cells decreased to some extent. Compared with controls, a significant decrease in MDR-1 mRNA (53.3%), MRP-1 mRNA (59.7%) as well as LRP mRNA (56.4%) was observed in the UO126 treated transfected cells after 12 h. Western blot also demonstrated that the protein expression of these MDR associated genes slightly reduced after treated with U0126 for 12 h (MDR-1 40.1%, MRP-1 29.4%, LRP35.7%). This change was accompanied with the rise of cell apoptosis ratio confirmed by Annexin V-PI detection. The apoptosis index of UO126treated cells increased by 1.28 fold, compared with that of transfected cells. | 4 | Pain management of hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke in patients from Nanjing,China显示文摘We selected 106 hemiplegic patients with shoulder pain hospitalized after stroke from three hospitals in Nanjing,China between February 2007 and January 2012.All patients had complete clinical data sets and accounted for 45.5%of the inpatients because of stroke.Results showed that the number of patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain post stroke increased yearly,attacking mainly males 50–69 years of age.Of 106 patients,there were 60 cases(56.6%)of adhesive capsulitis,19(17.9%)of shoulder subluxation,14(13.2%)of complex regional pain syndrome,and 13(12.6%)of central pain.The main symptoms were shoulder pain(100%),limit of shoulder mobility(98.1%),and adhesion of the scapula(56.6%).MRI of the shoulder showed tendon and ligament lesions(57.1%)and rotator cuff tear(38.1%).53.8%of central pain was related to the thalamus,in addition to the basal ganglia,brain stem,and cerebellopontine angle.Shoulder pain,upper limb motor function and function independence were significantly improved after comprehensive rehabilitation.In particular,electroacupuncture based on basic physical therapy exhibited efficacy on shoulder subluxation and complex regional pain syndrome.Multiple linear regression results showed a negative relationship of efficacy of pain management with the attack period of shoulder pain involvement of the posterior limb of the internal capsule,and duration between onset and rehabilitation treatment,but a positive correlation with pain-related education,pain regression period,and pain diagnosis. | Yi Zhu Bin Su Ning Li Hongzhu Jin | 2013 | Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,25: | 14 |
| 5 | CHARACTERIZATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN OUTDOOR AND INDOOR BIOAEROSOLS IN AN OFFICE BUILDING显示文摘Characterizations and relationships between indoor and outdoor bioaerosols were examined in an occupied office building, equipped with an air conditioning (HVAC) system, in Tempe, Arizona, USA. A two-stage microbial air sampler was used to collect bioaerosols both inside and outside the office at fixed locations in space and at regular time intervals from August to December, 2000. Simultaneous measurements of bioaerosol, temperature, relative humidity, light intensity and wind speed were performed to explore the effects of environmental factors on bioaerosol levels. Twenty species of airborne bacteria and four genera of airborne fungi were found in our samples. The particle sizes of most outdoor and indoor bioaerosols were larger than 8.0 mm. According to the measurements of sampling days, the concentrations of outdoor bioaerosols were highest in the morning, but declined in the afternoon and reached the lowest point in the evening. The concentration peak of indoor bioaerosol (especially at the lower level) occurred in the evening, suggesting that the concentration of indoor bioaerosols follows that of outdoors, but with a time delay due to the lag associated with indoor-outdoor air exchange. | 6 | A Brief Review on the Human Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Project显示文摘The ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project is an international research consortium that aims to identify all functional elements in the human genome sequence. The second phase of the project comprised 1640 datasets from 147 different cell types, yielding a set of 30 publications across several journals. These data revealed that 80.4% of the human genome displays some functionality in at least one cell type. Many of these regulatory elements are physically associated with one another and further form a network or three-dimensional conformation to affect gene expression. These elements are also related to sequence variants associated with diseases or traits. | 7 | Macroinvertebrates in the bed sediment of the Yellow River显示文摘Extensive agricultural,industrial and urban development in the Yellow River,China,have modified the sediment-water balance,flow and inundation regimes,longitudinal connectivity,integrity of riparian vegetation,and water quality.Macroinvertebrate assemblages in the bed sediment of main channel and major reservoirs of the Yellow River are described in detail for the first time.A total of 74 taxa comprising 17 taxa of oligochaetes,48 taxa of aquatic insects,5 taxa of molluscs,and 4 taxa of other animals were recorded.A range of feeding guilds were represented,including, collector-gatherers(32 taxa),predators(17 taxa),scrapers(16 taxa),shredders(6 taxa)and collector-filterers(2 taxa).Both the mean density and biomass of macroinvertebrates were significantly higher in sites located in the artificial reservoirs compared with the main river channel. Assemblages varied spatially;Oligochaetes dominated assemblages in upper reaches,insects dominated in middle reaches and other animals(e.g.Crustacea)dominated in lower reaches. | 11 | Sex Differences in Diagnosis and Clinical Phenotypes of Chinese Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder显示文摘The aim of this study was to explore the differences between boys and girls in the diagnosis and clinical phenotypes of autism spectrum disorder(ASD) in China's mainland. Children diagnosed with ASD(n = 1064, 228 females) were retrospectively included in the analysis. All children were assessed using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised(ADI-R) and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule(ADOS). The results showed that girls scored significantly higher in ADI-R socioemotional reciprocity than boys, and also scored lower in ADI-R and ADOS restricted and repetitive behaviors(RRBs). Meanwhile, the proportions of girls who satisfied the diagnostic cut-off scores in the ADI-R RRBs domain were lower than in boys(P \ 0.05). Our results indicated that girls with ASD show greater socio-emotional reciprocity than boys. Girls also tended to show fewer RRBs than boys, and the type of RRBs in girls differ from those in boys. | 12 | Transcriptome-based identification and expression analysis of the glutathione S-transferase(GST)family in tree peony reveals a likely role in anthocyanin transport显示文摘For red-flowered cultivars of tree peony(Paeonia suffruticosa),anthocyanin content is a critical factor determining the different petal pigmentations.Glutathione S-transferases(GSTs)are ubiquitous and multifunctional conjugating proteins that may be responsible for the transport of anthocyanin pigments from the cytoplasm to vacuole.The underlying function of the GST family in tree peony,however,remains unclear.In this study,we systematically isolated and identified a total of 54 putative full-length Ps GST genes through a combination of bioinformatics approaches from transcriptome databases.Intraspecific phylogenetic analyses revealed extensive differentiation in their coding sequences and divided them into 10 of the 14 known classes of plant GSTs.The phylogenetic relationships,evolutionary characteristics,protein domain,and motif organization were clearly conserved among the different phylogenetic subclasses.The results of the RNA-seq and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction experiments exhibited extensive variation in gene expression profiles among different developmental stages and varieties.Furthermore,the phylogenetic relationships,expression profiles,protein interactions,weighted gene co-expression network analysis,and correlation analysis results suggested that PsGSTF3(Unigene 0064200)is a candidate participant in anthocyanin transport and the promotion of pigment accumulation,exhibiting a strong positive correlation with anthocyanin content among different tissues(r=0.908**)and an increasing rate of anthocyanin content during the flower developmental process(r=0.961*).These results furthered our understanding of the transport and accumulation functions of the GST family as well as the enhancement of tree peony breeding through molecular biology techniques. | Lulu Han Hongzhu Zou Lin Zhou Yan Wang | 2022 | Horticultural Plant Journal2022,8,6: | 3 |

| 16 | Seasonal Responses of Net Primary Productivity of Vegetation to Phenological Dynamics in the Loess Plateau, China显示文摘With global warming, the great changes in the patterns of plant growth have occurred. The conditions in early spring and late autumn have changed the process of vegetation photosynthesis, which are expected to have a significant impact on net primary productivity(NPP) and affect the global carbon cycle. Currently, the seasonal response characteristics of NPP to phenological changes in dryland ecosystems are still not well defined. This article calibrated and analyzed the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)time series of Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer(AVHRR) data from 1982 to 2015 in the Loess Plateau, China. The spatial and temporal distributions of vegetation phenology and NPP in the Loess Plateau under semihumid and semiarid conditions were investigated. The seasonal variation in the NPP response to vegetation phenology under the climate change was also analyzed.
