Influence of different extrusion processes on mechanical properties of magnesium alloy显示文摘AZ31 Mg alloy sheets were processed by the conventional symmetrical extrusion(CSE)and the asymmetric extrusion(ASE).Progressive-asymmetric extrusion(PASE)and severe strain-asymmetric extrusion(SASE)were employed for ASE processes. The texture at near-surface and mid-layer zones of ASE sheets was diverse penetrating the normal direction(ND).This was attributed to an additional asymmetric shear strain deformation during the ASE process.(0002)basal planes of PASE sheets tilt to the shear deformation direction.Meanwhile, the basal texture intensity of PASE sheets has been weakened compared with one in CSE sheets.Grain refinement and tilted weak basal texture obtained by SASE process dramatically enhances the room temperature strength and plasticity of the extruded AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets. The microstructure and mechanical responses were examined and discussed.Qingshan Yang Bin Jiang Hucheng Pan Bo Song Zhongtao Jiang Jiahong Dai Lifei Wang Fusheng Pan 2014Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2014,2,3:11
Effect of extrusion speed on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg-Ca binary alloy显示文摘This work reported the effect of extrusion speeds on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-Ca binary alloy. The results showed that yield strength of the as-extruded Mg-1.2wt.%Ca alloys decrease from∼360MPa to∼258MPa as the ram speed increases from 0.4mm/s to 2.4 mm/s,and the elongation increases from∼3.9%to∼12.2%.The microstructure changes from bimodal grain feature to the complete dynamical recrystallization(DRX)with increase of the extrusion speed. The ultrafine DRXed grains in size of∼0.85μm,the numerous nano-Mg_(2)Ca particles dispersing along the grain boundaries and interiors,as well as the high density of residual dislocations, should account for the high strength. It is believed that the high degree of dynamic recrystallization and the resulting texture randomization play the critical roles in the ductility enhancement of the high-speed extruded Mg alloys.Jingren Li Aiyue Zhang Hucheng Pan Yuping Ren Zhuoran Zeng Qiuyan Huang Changlin Yang Lifeng Ma Gaowu Qin 2021Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,4:9
α→β Transformation characteristics revealed by pulsed laser-induced non-equilibrium microstructures in duplex-phase Zr alloy显示文摘Microstructures of a duplex-phase Zr-2.5Nb alloy treated by pulsed laser were characterized by electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD) and electron channeling contrast(ECC) imaging techniques.Major attention has been paid to non-equilibrium hybrid microstructure consisting of both prior a and β phases, and a plates transformed from new β phases to probe α→β transformation characteristics in the alloy. The origin of the hybrid microstructure is attributed to the specific thermodynamic conditions induced by the pulsed laser treatment.ECC observation shows that newly formed β phases during laser heating prefer to nucleate and grow at the expense of edges of prior a grains rather than their interiors.EBSD analyses further reveal that orientations of the new βphases are not determined by the prior a grains according to the Burgers relationship but maintain those of the prior β phases in an epitaxial growth way.CHAI LinJiang WANG Shu Yan WU Hao GUO Ning PAN HuCheng CHEN Liang Yu MURTY K.L. 4Low-cost and high-strength Mg-Al-Ca-Zn-Mn wrought alloy with balanced ductility显示文摘A novel low-cost Mg-Al-Ca-Zn-Mn-based alloy was developed to simultaneously improve its strength and ductility. The high yield strength of 411 MPa and the high elongation to failure of~8.9%have been achieved in the as-extruded Mg-1.3Al-1.2Ca-0.5Zn-0.6Mn(wt%)sample.Microstructure characterizations showed that the high strength is mainly associated with the ultra-fined dynamically recrystallized(DRXed)grains.Moreover,high-density dislocations in the un-DRXed region and nano-precipitates are distributed among theα-Mg matrix. The high ductility property can be ascribed to the high volume fraction of DRXed grains with a much randomized texture,as well as the formations of high-density subgrains in the un-DRXed grain regions.Kun Yang Hucheng Pan Sen Du Man Li Jingren Li Hongbo Xie Qiuyan Huang Huajun Mo Gaowu Qin 2022International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2022,29,7:3
Bimodal plate structures induced by pulsed laser in duplex-phase Zr alloy显示文摘A duplex-phase Zr-2.5Nb alloy was treated by pulsed laser, followed by careful microstructural characterization using field emission gun scanning electron microscope and attached electron backscatter diffraction. Beneath the modification zones with common uniform α-plate structures(UPS), a layer of unreported bimodal α-plate structures(BPS) featured by coarse(submicron)plates forming multiple cores surrounded by dense fine(nanoscale) plates was found. Presence of such BPS is attributed to non-equilibrium thermodynamic conditions induced by the pulsed laser treatments. Limited diffusion of Nb due to the short pulse during laser heating allows β phases with distinctly different Nb contents to be presented: Nb-enriched prior β films and Nb-depleted β phases, transforming into the fine and the coarse plates during cooling, respectively. Orientation analyses show that both types of plates in the BPS are aroused essentially from a single β orientation, suggesting epitaxial growth of the Nb-depletedβ phases from the preexisting β films.CHAI LinJiang WANG ShuYan WU Hao YANG ZhiNan PAN HuCheng SONG Bo GUO Ning 2017Science China(Technological Sciences)2017,60,4:2

Anomalous crystal structure of γ' phase in the Mg-RE-Zn(Ag) series alloys:Causality clarified by ab initio study显示文摘The crystal structure of the single-unit-cell thickness γ ' phase,as a key strengthening phase in Mg-REZn(Ag) series alloys, has been extensively studied, and several structural models have been proposed in the past two decades. However, these reported models, and even the lattice constants at the same proposed structure, are scattered severely, which has led to considerable confusion and not available for further mechanical property simulation and prediction of Mg alloys containing this phase. In this study,by using first-principles calculations, the crystal structure of y' phase is clarified, resolving the discrepancies among different experiments, and its intrinsic mechanical properties have also been studied for the first time.It is verified that the γ ' phase contains quasi-five atomic layers, instead of the previously reported tri-layer,and surprisingly, its crystal structure has many variants, which would change with the alloy composition.Besides, with the help of the simulated selected area electron diffraction(SAED) patterns,it is found that the atoms in the central layer remain partially ordered distribution, and this ordered extent primarily depends on the atomic ratio of RE:Zn(Ag) and the solute content in an alloy. That is,the ordered extent increases with decreasing the atomic ratio of RE:Zn(Ag) and/or increasing solute content of alloy, and vice versa.Ag and Zn dissolved in the γ' phase would produce almost opposed mechanical anisotropy for the γ ' phase under the identical crystal structure, and the addition of Ag shows more efficient on increasing the shear modulus of γ' phase.Junyuan Bai Xueyong Pang Xiangying Meng Hongbo Xie Hucheng Pan Yuping Ren Min Jiang Gaowu Qin 2020Journal of Materials Science & Technology2020,36,1:1
Achieving high strength above 400 MPa in conventionally extruded Mg-Ca-Zn ternary alloys显示文摘In this work, the role of Zn content in modifying the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg-1.2Ca-xZn(x=0.6,2.0 wt.%,named as XZ10-0 and ZX21-0,respectively)based alloys was studied, and it is found that the yield strength(YS)of the present Mg-(Zn)-Ca based alloys increases monotonically with increasing the Zn concentration,from~339 MPa in low-Zn content XZ10-0 sample to~406 MPa in high-Zn content ZX21-0 sample.Microstructure characterization shows that the enhanced YS can be attributed to the grain refinement, fine and dispersed nano-phases,a large number of lamellae structures, and the decrease of recrystallization fraction.TEM results show that the formation mechanism for the ultra-fine grains in present Mg-(Zn)-Ca based alloys can be attributed to the co-segregation of Ca and Zn elements at the grain boundary,as well as the dynamic nanoprecipitations. When the Zn content is high, the nano-phases in ZX21-0 sample belong to the Ca;Mg;Zn;ternary phases, which exert much higher thermal stability than the nano-sized Mg2 Ca binary phases formed in the low-Zn content XZ10-0 sample. The finer size and higher number density of the nano-Mg Zn Ca phases lead to the much finer grain size and sub-grain lamellae thickness in ZX21-0 sample, which thus results in the higher YS of~406 MPa.DU Sen YANG Kun LI Man LI JingRen REN YuPing HUANG QiuYan PAN HuCheng QIN GaoWu 2022Science China(Technological Sciences)2022,65,3:1
Microstructures and mechanical properties of as-extruded Mg–5Sn–1Zn–xAl(x=1, 3 and 5) alloys显示文摘As-extruded Mg–5Sn–1Zn–xAl alloys(x=1, 3, and 5) were fabricated by hot extrusion. The experimental results revealed that the yield strength of alloys initially decreased and then increased with the increase of Al content. These changes were mainly attributed to the difference in crystallographic texture and volume fractions of second phases. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation of the alloys were greater than 310 MPa, 227 MPa, and 11%, respectively. The strain hardening ability of the alloys was also discussed.Jia She Fusheng Pan Huanhuan Hu Hucheng Pan Aitao Tang Kai Song Zhengwen Yu Suqin Luo 2015Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2015,25,4:1
Two-dimensional interface superstructures assembled by well-ordered solute atoms显示文摘Segregation of solutes/impurities in the interfaces plays a decisive role in material performances. However, the segregation of solutes/impurities remains elusive due to the diversity of interfacial structures. Here,in a Mg-Nd-Mn ternary model system, two ordered novel two-dimensional(2D)interfacial superstructures formed by periodic segregation of solute atoms in special symmetric and asymmetric tilt grain boundaries(GBs)have been systematically investigated.Z-Contrast high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy(HAADF-STEM)observations provided the atomic-level details on how solute atoms were arranged on these special partially coherent tilt GBs.The strained conditions of each atomic site at the tilt GBs were accurately reproduced by molecular dynamics(MD)simulations plus Voronoi analysis, and the rationality of solute segregation in each atomic-site was evaluated carefully based on the first-principles calculations. These findings expand our knowledge of solute/impurity segregation behaviors in the interfaces, especially the co-segregation behaviors in multi-component materials.Peijun Yang Shanshan Li Hongbo Xie Jianfeng Jin Chuangwei Liu Hucheng Pan Yuping Ren Weitao Jia Yaping Zong Gaowu Qin 2023Journal of Materials Science & Technology2023,,11:0
Grain refinement and strength enhancement in Mg wrought alloys: A review显示文摘Low absolute strength becomes one major obstacle for the wider applications of low/no rare-earth(RE) containing Mg alloys. This review firstly demonstrates the importance of grain refinement in improving strength of Mg alloys by comprehensively comparing with other strategy, e.g., precipitation strengthening. Dynamic recrystallization(DRX) plays a crucial role in refining grain size of Mg wrought alloys. Therefore, secondly, the DRX models, grain nucleation mechanisms and the related grain refinement abilities in Mg alloys are summarized, including phase boundary, twin boundary and general boundary induced recrystallization. Thirdly, the newly developed low-RE containing Mg alloy, e.g., Mg-Ce, Mg-Nd and Mg-Sm based alloys, and the RE-free Mg alloys, e.g., Mg-Al, Mg-Zn, Mg-Sn and Mg-Ca based alloy, are reviewed, with the focus on enhancing the mechanical properties mainly via the grain refinement strategy. At the last section, the perspectives and outstanding issues concerning high-performance Mg wrought alloys are also proposed. This review is meant to promote the deep understanding on the critical role of grain refinement in Mg alloys and provide reference for the development of other high strength and low-cost Mg alloys which are fabricated by the conventional extrusion/rolling processing.Sen Wang Hucheng Pan Dongsheng Xie Dongdong Zhang Jingren Li Hongbo Xie Yuping Ren Gaowu Qin 2023Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2023,11,11:0
Variable precipitation behaviors of Laves phases in an ultralight Mg-Li-Zn alloy显示文摘Precipitation habits plays a decisive role in strengthening materials, especially for Mg alloys the non-basal plane precipitation is necessary but very limited.Generally, the precipitates would nucleate and grow up in a specific habit plane owing to the constraint of free-energy minimization of the system.Herein,in an aged ultralight Mg-Li-Zn alloy,we confirmed that the precipitates dominated by C15 Laves structure could form in a variety of habit planes,to generate three forms of strengthening-phases,i.e.,precipitate-rod,precipitate-lath,and precipitate-plate.Among which, the precipitate-plates are on basal plane as usually but precipitate-rods/laths are on non-basal plane, and such non-basal precipitates would transform into the basal(Mg,Li)Zn_(2)Laves structure with prolonged aging. These findings are interesting to understand the precipitation behaviors of multi-domain Laves structures in hexagonal close-packed crystals, and expected to provide a guidance for designing ultralight high-strength Mg-Li based alloys via precipitation hardening on the non-basal planes.Weixin Lou Hongbo Xie Xiaobo Zhao Junyuan Bai Hehang Zhang Yi Wang Xinze Li Hucheng Pan Yuping Ren Gaowu Qin 2023Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2023,11,6:0
