| 1 | Antihyperglycemic effects of the methanol leaf extract of Diaphananthe bidens in normoglycemic and streptozotocin—induced hyperglycemic rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the methanol leaf extract of Diaphonathe bidem(D.bidenx)(AFZEL EX SW) SCHLTR for antihyperglycemic activity in order to confirm it antidiabetic potential. Methods: D.bidenx was extracted by cold maceration for 48 h and concentrated in vacuo to yield D.bidenx extract(DBE).Hyperglycemia was induced by intraperitoneal administration of slreplozotocin (75 mg/kg).Oral glucose tolerance test was done with 2 g/kg glucose load in normal rats.DBE (150.300 and 600 mg/kg) was administered orally, while tolbutamide(100 mg/kg.p.o.) was used as the standard reference drug.Blood glucose levels determined using ACCUCHEK glucose autoanalyzer. The acute toxicity and phytochemical studies were also carried out.Results:DBF. (600 mg/kg) and tolbutamide(100 mg/kg) significantly(P<0.05,0.005) reduced blood glucose levels of rats between 120 and 480 nun post administration in normal rats.In the streptozotoeininduced hyperglycemic rats,DBE(150.300.600 mg/kg) caused significant(P<0.001)dose- and time- dependent reduction in the blood glucose levels by 1.7%.22.8%and 43.4%,respectively at 480 min compared to the negative control group.DBE(600 mg/kg) reduced the blood glucose level of rats by 1.2%in the oral glucose tolerance test when compared with the normal saline treated group. The acute toxicity test showed that DBE was safe at the doses used and the phytochemical screening revealed the presence of saponins, steroids, tannins and terpernoids.Conclusions:D. bidens extract possess antihyperglycemic activity which may be mediated through pancreatic and extra-pancreatic pathways, thereby justifying it folkloric use. | Anaga Aruh Ottah Onuoha Augustine Igboeli Okechukwu Obiora Ezeja Maxwell | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,3: | 3 |

| 19 | Comparative Analysis of Cephalofacial Dimorphism among Indigenous Ethnic Groups in Benue State,Nigeria显示文摘The face is an important physiognomic feature in humans, and facial anthropometric variables are valuable biometric physiognomies that vary with age, sex, and ethnicity. This study aimed to establish a standard for determining the extent of sexual dimorphism and study the distribution of basic face types by comparison with other ethnic groups in Benue State and Nigeria as a whole.A sample of 450 indigenous people from the Benue State volunteered to participate in this study. The cohort included 150 Tiv,150 Idoma, and 150 Igede people, between the age group of 18 and 35 years.Participants were randomly recruited from the entire geographical locations of the state, using the inclusion criteria.Anthropometric variables were measured using a digital sliding caliper including facial length(FL)(measured from the trichion to the gnathion)and facial width(FW)(measured as the bizygomatic width, between the right and left zygion).Cephalofacial indices were calculated from these variables. The results revealed significant differences in some of the measured variables between males and females across the various ethnic groups in Benue State, including variation in FL and FW.The comparative results for various ethnicities in Benue State(Tiv,Idoma, and Igede people)also showed a positive correlation between FL and FW,which could be used to predict cephalofacial indices among Tiv,Idoma, and Igede ethnic groups in this area. These results indicate that the dominant facial index among Idoma and Igede people was leptoprosopic(long face)while that among Tiv people is mesoprosopic(round face). The current findings could be useful for elucidating the sex differences and ancestral relationships,as well as for forensic anthropology, reconstructive surgery, and anthropometric considerations for the three ethnic groups in Benue State,Nigeria. | Joseph Igbo Enya Onenson Nkanu Onen | 2020 | Journal of Forensic Science and Medicine2020,6,1: | 0 |
| 20 | Production and Evaluation of Table Wine Using Two Different Varieties of Pawpaw (Carica papaya)显示文摘The aim of this study was to produce and evaluate table wine from two different varieties of pawpaw (rose red and yellow pawpaw). The must was evaluated for physicochemical and microbiological changes during fermentation while the wine was analyzed for physicochemical characteristics, microbiological quality and sensory properties and compared with commercial grape wine. Specific gravity of the “must” during fermentation decreased from 1.059-0.995 for rose red pawpaw and 1.005-0.990 for yellow pawpaw. The sugar content decreased from 13-3% on the 14th day of fermentation for rose red pawpaw while yellow pawpaw “must” decreased from 12.5-3%. pH drop for the yellow pawpaw “must” was 4.7-3.4 on the 14th day and 4.0-3.4 for rose red pawpaw “must”. Titratable acidity of the pawpaw “must” increased from 0.16-0.32% for rose red pawpaw “must” and 0.20-0.52% for yellow pawpaw “must”. Microbial analysis of the “must” during fermentation showed that yeast count increased from no growth to 3.0 × 10^6 cfu/mL for yellow pawpaw must and 4.0 × 10^6 cfu/mL for rose red pawpaw, respectively while total bacterial count decreased from 5.4 × 10^7-l.5 × 10^7 cfu/mL for yellow pawpaw must and 5.2 × 10^7-1.2 × 10^7 cfu/mL for rose red pawpaw “must”. Coliform recorded no growth throughout the period of fermentation. Physicochemical analysis of the wine showed that the yellow pawpaw wine has a specific gravity of 0.999, alcohol content 8.00%, titratable acidity of 0.59%, pH of 3.5 and sugar content of 3%. The rose red pawpaw wine had sugar content of 3%, titratable acidity of 0.38%, alcohol content 7.69%, specific gravity 0.997 and pH of 3.5. Microbial analysis of the wine showed no growth of coliform and yeast while bacterial count was 1.0 × 10^6 cfu/mL for both wines. Sensory results for the pawpaw wine showed no significant (p > 0.05) difference in the clarity and overall acceptability from the commercial wine. | David Barine Kiin-Kabari Queen Igbo Lucretia Ifeoma Barber | 2019 | Journal of Food Science and Engineering2019,9,6: | 0 |
