Absorbable magnesium-based stent: physiological factors to consider for in vitro degradation assessments显示文摘Absorbable metals have been widely tested in various in vitro settings using cells to evaluate their possible suitability as an implant material. However, there exists a gap between in vivo and in vitro test results for absorbable materials.A lot of traditional in vitro assessments for permanent materials are no longer applicable to absorbable metallic implants.A key step is to identify and test the relevant microenvironment and parameters in test systems, which should be adapted according to the specific application.New test methods are necessary to reduce the difference between in vivo and in vitro test results and provide more accurate information to better understand absorbable metallic implants. In this investigative review,we strive to summarize the latest test methods for characterizing absorbable magnesium-based stent for bioabsorption/biodegradation behavior in the mimicking vascular environments. Also, this article comprehensively discusses the direction of test standardization for absorbable stents to paint a more accurate picture of the in vivo condition around implants to determine the most important parameters and their dynamic interactions. | JuanWang Christopher E.Smith Jagannathan Sankar Yeoheung Yun Nan Huang | 2015 | Regenerative Biomaterials2015,2,1: | 9

Online optimal control of nonlinear discrete-time systems using approximate dynamic programming显示文摘In this paper, the optimal control of a class of general affine nonlinear discrete-time(DT) systems is undertaken by solving the Hamilton Jacobi-Bellman(HJB) equation online and forward in time. The proposed approach, referred normally as adaptive or approximate dynamic programming(ADP),uses online approximators(OLAs) to solve the infinite horizon optimal regulation and tracking control problems for affine nonlinear DT systems in the presence of unknown internal dynamics. Both the regulation and tracking controllers are designed using OLAs to obtain the optimal feedback control signal and its associated cost function.Additionally, the tracking controller design entails a feedforward portion that is derived and approximated using an additional OLA for steady state conditions.Novel update laws for tuning the unknown parameters of the OLAs online are derived.Lyapunov techniques are used to show that all signals are uniformly ultimately bounded and that the approximated control signals approach the optimal control inputs with small bounded error. In the absence of OLA reconstruction errors,an optimal control is demonstrated.Simulation results verify that all OLA parameter estimates remain bounded, and the proposed OLA-based optimal control scheme tunes itself to reduce the cost HJB equation. | Travis DIERKS Sarangapani JAGANNATHAN | 2011 | 控制理论与应用(英文版)2011,9,3: | 4
Dog10K: an international sequencing effort to advance studies of canine domestication, phenotypes and health显示文摘Dogs are the most phenotypically diverse mammalian species, and they possess more known heritable disorders than any other non-human mammal. Efforts to catalog and characterize genetic variation across well-chosen populations of canines are necessary to advance our understanding of their evolutionary history and genetic architecture. To date, no organized effort has been undertaken to sequence the world’s canid populations. The Dog10 K Consortium(http://www.dog10 kgenomes.org) is an international collaboration of researchers from across the globe who will generate 20× whole genomes from 10 000 canids in 5 years. This effort will capture the genetic diversity that underlies the phenotypic and geographical variability of modern canids worldwide. Breeds, village dogs, niche populations and extended pedigrees are currently being sequenced, and de novo assemblies of multiple canids are being constructed. This unprecedented dataset will address the genetic underpinnings of domestication, breed formation, aging, behavior and morphological variation. More generally, this effort will advance our understanding of human and canine health. | Elaine A.Ostrander Guo-Dong Wang Greger Larson Bridgett M.vonHoldt Brian W.Davis Vidhya Jagannathan Christophe Hitte Robert K.Wayne Ya-Ping Zhang the Dog10K Consortium | 2019 | National Science Review2019,6,4: | 3
Pediatric Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room: review of 87 cases显示文摘AIM: To report a large series of children having Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room using the lateral decubitus position. METHODS: Medical records of children who underwent Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago between September 2008 and April 2017 were reviewed. Induction of general anesthesia and intubation was performed in the supine position after which the patient was placed in lateral decubitus position. The Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed using a standard protocol. At the completion of the procedure, the patient was turned back into the supine position and extubated. RESULTS: This study included 87 eyes of 60 patients. Patient's age ranged from 1 to 18 y(mean 6.4±4.1 y). In most cases(84/87, 97%), the procedure was performed under general anesthesia. In all cases, good focus on the membrane was achieved, and the procedure was performed successfully. There were no intraoperative ocular or anesthesia-related complications. CONCLUSION: When performing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy in the operating room, the lateral decubitus position allowsan easy and safe approach without the risk of potentially devastating complications that have been associated with the previously described sitting and prone positions. | Michael Kinori Narasimhan Jagannathan Anne M Langguth Marjorie A Sasso Marilyn B Mets Bahram Rahmani Hawke Yoon Rebecca Mets-Halgrimson Sudhi P Kurup Janice L Zeid | 2019 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2019,12,5: | 2
Near Optimal Output Feedback Control of Nonlinear Discrete-time Systems Based on Reinforcement Neural Network Learning显示文摘In this paper, the output feedback based finitehorizon near optimal regulation of nonlinear affine discretetime systems with unknown system dynamics is considered by using neural networks(NNs) to approximate Hamilton-JacobiBellman(HJB) equation solution. First, a NN-based Luenberger observer is proposed to reconstruct both the system states and the control coefficient matrix. Next, reinforcement learning methodology with actor-critic structure is utilized to approximate the time-varying solution, referred to as the value function, of the HJB equation by using a NN. To properly satisfy the terminal constraint, a new error term is defined and incorporated in the NN update law so that the terminal constraint error is also minimized over time. The NN with constant weights and timedependent activation function is employed to approximate the time-varying value function which is subsequently utilized to generate the finite-horizon near optimal control policy due to NN reconstruction errors. The proposed scheme functions in a forward-in-time manner without offline training phase. Lyapunov analysis is used to investigate the stability of the overall closedloop system. Simulation results are given to show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. | Qiming Zhao Hao Xu Sarangapani Jagannathan | 2014 | IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2014,1,4: | 2
Magnesium incorporated chitosan based scaffolds for tissue engineering applications显示文摘Chitosan based porous scaffolds are of great interest in biomedical applications especially in tissue engineering because of their excellent biocompatibility in vivo, controllable degradation rate and tailorable mechanical properties. This paper presents a study of the fabrication and characterization of bioactive scaffolds made of chitosan(CS),carboxymethyl chitosan(CMC)and magnesium gluconate(MgG).Scaffolds were fabricated by subsequent freezing-induced phase separation and lyophilization of polyelectrolyte complexes of CS,CMC and MgG.The scaffolds possess uniform porosity with highly interconnected pores of 50-250 μm size range.Compressive strengths up to 400 kPa,and elastic moduli up to 5 MPa were obtained. The scaffolds were found to remain intact, retaining their original threedimensional frameworks while testing in in-vitro conditions. These scaffolds exhibited no cytotoxicity to 3T3 fibroblast and osteoblast cells. These observations demonstrate the efficacy of this new approach to preparing scaffold materials suitable for tissue engineering applications. | Udhab Adhikari Nava PRijal Shalil Khanal Devdas Pai Jagannathan Sankar Narayan Bhattarai | 2016 | Bioactive Materials2016,1,2: | 2

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and chemokine administration - a combination with potential therapeutic value for treating diabetic wounds显示文摘Non-healing wounds impart serious medical problems to people with diabetes.Amongst 15%of diabetic patients, the incidence of foot ulcer is the most prevailing, which confers a significant risk of limb amputation, mainly due to hypoxia and impairment in cell signaling.Alteration in the expression of chemokines and the related factors in diabetic conditions delays the recruitment of different cell types, including fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and immune cells such as macrophages to the site of injury, further impairing neovasculogenesis, reepithelialization, and extracellular matrix formation. Thus, proper activation of effector cells through an accurate signal pathway is necessary for better therapeutic application.Hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBOT)is the current treatment prescribed by medical practitioners, shown to have increased the wound healing rate by reducing the need for significant amputation among the diabetic population. However, the risk of morbidity associated with HBOT needs complete attention through rigorous research to avoid adverse outcomes.Altering the level of pro-angiogenic chemokines may regulate the inflammatory response, further promote vascularization, and enhance the complete healing of wounds in diabetic patients. Thus,a combination of better therapeutic approaches could pave the way for developing a successful treatment for diabetic foot and wound healing. | Jagannathan Venkataseshan Pragasam Viswanathan | 2022 | World Journal of Diabetes2022,13,12: | 2

An Optimal Hybrid Learning Approach for Attack Detection in Linear Networked Control Systems显示文摘A novel learning-based attack detection and estimation scheme is proposed for linear networked control systems(NCS),wherein the attacks on the communication network in the feedback loop are expected to increase network induced delays and packet losses, thus changing the physical system dynamics.First, the network traffic flow is modeled as a linear system with uncertain state matrix and an optimal Q-learning based control scheme over finite-horizon is utilized to stabilize the flow.Next,an adaptive observer is proposed to generate the detection residual, which is subsequently used to determine the onset of an attack when it exceeds a predefined threshold, followed by an estimation scheme for the signal injected by the attacker.A stochastic linear system after incorporating network-induced random delays and packet losses is considered as the uncertain physical system dynamics. The attack detection scheme at the physical system uses the magnitude of the state vector to detect attacks both on the sensor and the actuator. The maximum tolerable delay that the physical system can tolerate due to networked induced delays and packet losses is also derived.Simulations have been performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. | Haifeng Niu Avimanyu Sahoo Chandreyee Bhowmick S·Jagannathan | 2019 | IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2019,6,6: | 2
