| 3 | Assessment of soil degradation and chemical compositions in Rwandan tea-growing areas显示文摘This study has focused on the processes of soil degradation and chemical element concentration in tea-growing regions of Rwanda,Africa.Soil degradation accelerated by erosion is caused not only by topography but also by human activities.This soil degradation involves both the physical loss and reduction in the amount of topsoil associated with nutrient decline.Soil samples were collected from eleven tropical zones in Rwanda and from variable depth within each collecting site.Of these,Samples from three locations in each zone were analyzed in the laboratory,with the result that the pH of all soil samples is shown to be less than 5(pH<5) with a general average of 4.4.The elements such as iron(Fe), copper(Cu),manganese(Mn),and zinc(Zn) are present in high concentration levels.In contrast calcium (Ca) and sodium(Na) are present at low-level concentrations and carbon(C) was found in minimal concentrations.In addition,elements derived from fertilizers,such as nitrogen(N),phosphorous(P),and potassium(K) which is also from minerals such as feldspar,are also present in low-level concentrations. | 4 | Renal impairment and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction early post-myocardial infarction显示文摘AIM:To study if impaired renal function is associated with increased risk of peri-infarct heart failure (HF) in patients with preserved ejection fraction (EF).METHODS:Patients with occluded infarct-related arteries (IRAs) between 1 to 28 d after myocardial infarction (MI) were grouped into chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages based on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).Rates of early post-MI HF were compared among eGFR groups.Logistic regression was used to explore independent predictors of HF.RESULTS:Reduced eGFR was present in 71.1% of 2160 patients,with significant renal impairment (eGFR < 60 mL/min every 1.73 m2) in 14.8%.The prevalence of HF was higher with worsening renal function:15.5%,17.8% and 29.4% in patients with CKD stages 1,2 and 3 or 4,respectively (P < 0.0001),despite a small absolute difference in mean EF across eGFR groups:48.2 ± 10.0,47.9 ± 11.3 and 46.2 ± 12.1,respectively (P=0.02).The prevalence of HF was again higher with worsening renal function among patients with preserved EF:10.1%,13.6% and 23.6% (P < 0.0001),but this relationship was not significant among patients with depressed EF:27.1%,26.2% and 37.9% (P= 0.071).Moreover,eGFR was an independent correlate of HF in patients with preserved EF (P=0.003) but not in patients with depressed EF (P=0.181).CONCLUSION:A significant proportion of post-MI patients with occluded IRAs have impaired renal function.Impaired renal function was associated with an increased rate of early post-MI HF,the association being strongest in patients with preserved EF.These findings have implications for management of peri-infarct HF. | Vinod Jorapur Gervasio A Lamas Zygmunt P Sadowski Harmony R Reynolds Antonio C Carvalho Christopher E Buller James M Rankin Jean Renkin Philippe Gabriel Steg Harvey D White Carlos Vozzi Eduardo Balcells Michael Ragosta C Edwin Martin Vankeepuram S Srinivas William W Wharton III Staci Abramsky Ana C Mon Shari S Kronsberg Judith S Hochman | 2010 | World Journal of Cardiology2010,2,1: | 1 |

| 20 | Susceptibility to gravitational processes due to land cover change in the Río Chiquito-Barranca del Muerto subbasin(Pico De Orizaba Volcano, México)显示文摘Land cover change can lead to slope instability by accelerating erosive processes associated with agriculture, forestry, and infrastructure. The Rio Chiquito-Barranca del Muerto subbasin has experienced an increase in land cover change due to government programs and the establishment of agricultural and urban areas. The aim of this study was to provide a model to map the susceptibility to gravitational processes along sites where anthropogenic land cover change has occurred.The method was based on the stratification of the subbasin according to landforms and cartographic variables. These variables were used in a multicriteria assessment to assign weights according to their contribution to the onset of new gravitational processes. Those weights were used to create a susceptibility map based on a weighted linear sum.The accuracy of the resulting map was validated in an error matrix with a random stratified design based on susceptibility classes per landform. The results produced a map of areas with susceptibility to gravitational processes due to land cover change; this susceptibility is very high in the undifferentiated pyroclastic slope and limestone mountain, where it derives not only from anthropogenic effects on natural vegetation cover, but also from steep slopes,weathered materials, low apparent density, high erosivity, and previous gravitational processes.
