| 3 | Nanomechanical Characterization of Bone Quality Depending on Tissue Age via Bimodal Atomic Force Microscopy显示文摘Characterization of bone quality during the healing process is crucial for successful implantation procedures and patient comfort.In this study,a bone implant specimen that underwent a 4-week healing period was investigated.Bimodal atomic force microscopy(AFM)was employed to simultaneously obtain the morphology and elastic modulus maps of the newly formed and pre-existing bone regions within the sample.Results indicate that the new bone matrix possessed lower miner-alization levels and presented larger,uneven mineral grains,exhibiting the attributes of a woven bone.On the other hand,the old bone matrix exhibited a more uniform and mineralized structure,which is characteristic of lamellar bones.The new bone had a lower overall elastic modulus than the old bone.Bimodal AFM further confrmed that the new bone displayed three regions comprising unmineralized,partially mineralized,and fully matured sections,which indicate a turbulent change in its composition.Meanwhile,the old bone exhibited two sections comprising partially mineralized and matured bone parts,which denote the fnal phase of mineralization.This study provides valuable insights into the morphological and nanome-chanical diferences between the old and new bone matrixes and presents a novel approach to investigate bone quality at diferent phases of the bone-healing process. | Jinha Kwon Hanna Cho | 2023 | Nanomanufacturing and Metrology2023,6,4: | 1 |

| 18 | Experimental demonstration of high-Q MRR based on a germanium-on-insulator platform with an yttria insulator in the mid-IR range显示文摘We experimentally demonstrate an all-pass microring resonator (MRR) based on a Y_(2)O_(3)BOX germanium-oninsulator (GeOI) platform operating in the mid-IR region.The ring resonator was numerically designed to have a high quality (Q) factor in the 4.18μm to 4.22μm wavelength range in the fundamental TE mode.According to our design,the GeOI ring resonator was fabricated by the direct wafer-bonding technology with an yttria(Y_(2)O_(3)) buried oxide layer,which is transparent at the mid-IR region,for the bonding interface and the electron beam lithography.The experimental resonant characteristic was obtained using our fiber-based mid-IR measurement setup.The GeOI single MRR exhibited an extinction ratio (ER) of 15.28 dB and an insertion loss (IL)of 1.204 dB,and the racetrack showed an ER of 22.77 dB and an IL of 0.627 dB.Furthermore,the free spectral range of the device was 5.29 nm,and the loaded Q factor of 94,528 (176,158 of intrinsic Q factor) was extracted by the nonlinear least squares method.We believe this demonstration of our GeOI MRR offers a valuable opportunity to implement multipurpose devices such as optical sensors,switches,and filters in the mid-IR range. | JINHA LIM JOONSUP SHIM INKI KIM SANGHYEON KIM | 2023 | Photonics Research2023,11,11: | 0 |
| 19 | Overlooked impact of precursor mixing:Implications in the electrochemical performance of battery electrode materials显示文摘Solid-state reactions are an essential part of the synthesis of various cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).Despite the simplicity and effectiveness for mass production,a subtle variation in synthesis conditions can often give rise to unexpectedly different physical properties,significantly affecting the electrochemical performance of electrode materials.However,this aspect has long been overlooked in the LIB community,which should focus on advancement in understanding the influence of synthesis conditions.As solid-state reactions occur only at the interface of precursor materials,maximizing the interfacial contact area between mixed precursor powders is crucial.Mechanical milling and/or mixing are common practices that have been performed in both academia and industry for this purpose.Unlike the common belief that this pre-treatment before calcination would be of great benefit for the preparation of high-performance LIB materials,we revealed in this work that this practice is not always successful for this goal.In our case study of the preparation of LiCoO_(2),we demonstrated that mechanical mixing-a routinely implemented process for homogeneous mixing of precursors-can be harmful if it is performed without assuring optimal working conditions for mixing.The underlying reasons for this surprising result are elucidated in this work,and we hope that this new insight can help avoid the potential pitfall of routine implementations performed for LIB materials. | JinHa Shim Jin Ho Bang | 2023 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2023,,7: | 0 |
