1Identification of coastal wetlands of international importance for waterbirds:a review of China Coastal Waterbird Surveys 2005–2013显示文摘Background:China's coastal wetlands belong to some of the most threatened ecosystems worldwide.The loss and degradation of these wetlands seriously threaten waterbirds that depend on wetlands.Methods:The China Coastal Waterbird Census was organized by volunteer birdwatchers in China's coastal region.Waterbirds were surveyed synchronously once every month at 14 sites,as well as irregularly at a further 18 sites,between September 2005 and December 2013.Results:A total of 75 species of waterbirds met the 1 % population level Ramsar listing criterion at least once at one site.The number of birds of the following species accounted for over 20 % of the total flyway populations at a single site:Mute Swan(Cygnus olor),Siberia Crane(Grus leucogeranus),Far Eastern Oystercatcher(Haematopus osculans),Bar-tailed Godwit(Limosa lapponica),Spotted Greenshank(Tringa guttifer),Great Knot(Calidris tenuirostris),Spoon-billed Sandpiper(Calidris pygmeus),Saunders' s Gull(Larus saundersi),Relict Gull(Larus relictus),Great Cormorant(Phalacrocorax carbo),Eurasian Spoonbill(Platalea leucorodia),Black-faced Spoonbill(Platalea minor) and Dalmatian Pelican(Pelecanus crispus).A total of 26 sites supported at least one species of which their number met the1 % criterion.Forty-two species met the 1 % criterion in the Yellow River Delta,Shandong;29 at the Cangzhou coast,Hebei and 26 species at the Lianyungang coast,Jiangsu.Conclusions:The results highlight the international importance of China's coastal wetlands for waterbirds.This study also demonstrates that participation of local birdwatchers in waterbird surveys results in data that are invaluable not only for understanding the current status of waterbirds in China's coastal regions but also for waterbird conservation and management.Qingquan Bai Jianzhong Chen Zhihong Chen Guotai Dong Jiangtian Dong Wenxiao Dong Vivian Wing Kan Fu Yongxiang Han Gang Lu Jing Li Yang Liu Zhi Lin Derong Meng Jonathan Martinez Guanghui Ni Kai Shan Renjie Sun Suixing Tian Fengqin Wang Zhiwei Xu Yat-tung Yu Jin Yang Zhidong Yang Lin Zhang Ming Zhang Xiangwu Zeng 2015Chinese Birds2015,,3:20
2Multifunctional to multistage delivery systems: The evolution of nanoparticles for biomedical applications显示文摘Nanomaterials are advancing in several directions with significant progress being achieved with respect to their synthesis, functionalization and biomedical application. In this review, we will describe several classes of prototypical nanocarriers, such as liposomes, silicon particles, and gold nanoshells, in terms of their individual function as well as their synergistic use. Active and passive targeting, photothermal ablation, and drug controlled release constitute some of the crucial functions identified to achieve a medical purpose. Current limitations in targeting, slow clearance, and systemic as well as local toxicity are addressed in reference to the recent studies that attempted to comprehend and solve these issues. The demand for a more sophisticated understanding of the impact of nanomaterials on the body and of their potential immune response underlies this discussion. Combined components are then discussed in the setting of multifunctional nanocarriers, a class of drug delivery systems we envisioned, proposed, and evolved in the last 5 years. 7Role of PCA3 test in clinical decision making for prostate cancer diagnosis显示文摘AIM: To assess the role of PCA3 urine test in the management of patients with suspected prostate cancer after repeat negative prostate biopsies.METHODS: Patients with suspected prostate cancer eitherdue to high or rising prostate specific antigen(PSA) levels and with a history of prostate biopsy who were candidates for repeat procedure were prospectively recruited to undergo PCA3 urine test. The recommendations on further management including the decision whether to proceed or not to the biopsy were made based on the PCA3 score. Patients' adherence with the recommendations and influence of the PCA3 test on clinical decision making were assessed. The contribution of the multivariate model was measured with a decision curve analysis. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty-six patients were recruited to the study and underwent the PCA3 test. Twenty-six percent of 263 patients underwent prostate biopsy despite the low risk designation by PCA3 and 30% of 93 men did not proceed to biopsy despite a high risk result, rendering overall adherence of 73%. The variables that significantly correlated with adherence were positive family history of prostate cancer and PSA more than 10 ng/m L. Pre-test clinical stage, the number and the results of previous biopsies were not associated with the adherence. The decision curve analysis gave identical results for cut-off points of 25 and 35. On multivariate analysis the model that included PCA3 score, serum PSA, family history and result of the previous biopsy best performed with Area Under the Curve of 0.77. CONCLUSION: PCA3 urine test markedly outperforms PSA in a repeat biopsy setting. 8Involvement of ethylene receptors in the salt tolerance response of Cucurbita pepo显示文摘Abiotic stresses have a negative effect on crop production,affecting both vegetative and reproductive development.Ethylene plays a relevant role in plant response to environmental stresses,but the specific contribution of ethylene biosynthesis and signalling components in the salt stress response differs between Arabidopsis and rice,the two most studied model plants.In this paper,we study the effect of three gain-of-function mutations affecting the ethylene receptors CpETR1B,CpETR1A,and CpETR2B of Cucurbita pepo on salt stress response during germination,seedling establishment,and subsequent vegetative growth of plants.The mutations all reduced ethylene sensitivity,but enhanced salt tolerance,during both germination and vegetative growth,demonstrating that the three ethylene receptors play a positive role in salt tolerance.Under salt stress,etr1b,etr1a,and etr2b germinate earlier than WT,and the root and shoot growth rates of both seedlings and plants were less affected in mutant than in WT.The enhanced salt tolerance response of the etr2b plants was associated with a reduced accumulation of Na^(+)in shoots and leaves,as well as with a higher accumulation of compatible solutes,including proline and total carbohydrates,and antioxidant compounds,such as anthocyanin.Many membrane monovalent cation transporters,including Na^(+)/H^(+)and K^(+)/H^(+)exchangers(NHXs),K^(+)efflux antiporters(KEAs),high-affinity K^(+)transporters(HKTs),and K^(+)uptake transporters(KUPs)were also highly upregulated by salt in etr2b in comparison with WT.In aggregate,these data indicate that the enhanced salt tolerance of the mutant is led by the induction of genes that exclude Na+in photosynthetic organs,while maintaining K^(+)/Na^(+)homoeostasis and osmotic adjustment.If the salt response of etr mutants occurs via the ethylene signalling pathway,our data show that ethylene is a negative regulator of salt tolerance during germination and vegetative growth.Nevertheless,the higher upregulation of genes involved in Ca^(2+)signalling(CpCRCK2A and CpCRCK2B)and ABA biosynthesis(CpNCED3A and CpNCED3B)in etr2b leaves under salt stress likely indicates that the function of ethylene receptors in salt stress response in C.pepo can be mediated by Ca^(2+)and ABA signalling pathways.Gustavo Cebrian Jessica Iglesias-Moya Alicia Garcia Javier MartInez Jonathan Romero Jose Javier Regalado Cecilia Martinez Juan Luis Valenzuela Manuel Jamilena 2021Horticulture Research2021,8,1:0
