Soil Organic Carbon Contents and Stocks in Coastal Salt Marshes with Spartina alterniflora Following an Invasion Chronosequence in the Yellow River Delta,China显示文摘Plant invasion alters the fundamental structure and function of native ecosystems by affecting the biogeochemical pools and fluxes of materials and energy. Native(Suaeda salsa) and invasive(Spartina alterniflora) salt marshes were selected to study the effects of Spartina alterniflora invasion on soil organic carbon(SOC) contents and stocks in the Yellow River Delta. Results showed that the SOC contents(g/kg) and stocks(kg/m^2) were significantly increased(P < 0.05) after Spartina alterniflora invasion of seven years, especially for the surface soil layer(0–20 cm). The SOC contents exhibited an even distribution along the soil profiles in native salt marshes, while the SOC contents were gradually decreased with depth after Spartina alterniflora invasion of seven years. The natural ln response ratios(Ln RR) were applied to identify the effects of short-term Spartina alterniflora invasion on the SOC stocks. We also found that Spartina alterniflora invasion might cause soil organic carbon losses in a short-term phase(2–4 years in this study) due to the negative Ln RR values, especially for 20–60 cm depth. And the SOCD in surface layer(0–20 cm) do not increase linearly with the invasive age. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that silt + clay content was exponentially related with SOC in surface layer(Adjusted R^2 = 0.43, P < 0.001), suggesting that soil texture could play a key role in SOC sequestration of coastal salt marshes.ZHANG Guangliang BAI Junhong JIA Jia WANG Xin WANG Wei ZHAO Qingqing ZHANG Shuai 2018Chinese Geographical Science2018,28,3:8
A natural variation in Ribonuclease H-like gene underlies Rht8 to confer“Green Revolution”trait in wheat显示文摘Dear Editor,Introduction of gibberellin(GA)-insensitive Reduced height(Rht)genes,Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b,has resulted in the“Green Revolution”in modern wheat cultivars(Triticum aestivum)that has skyrocketed wheat grain yields worldwide since the 1960s(Peng et al.,1999;Velde et al.,2021).However,Rht-B1b/D1b also reduce coleoptiles, which is undesired in dryland regions where deep planting is essential for seedling establishment(Rebetzke et al.,1999,Rebetzke et al.,2001;Ellis et al.,2004).Lingling Chai Mingming Xin Chaoqun Dong Zhaoyan Chen Huijie Zhai Junhong Zhuang Xuejiao Cheng Naijiao Wang Jia Geng Xiaobo Wang Ruolin Bian Yingyin Yao Weilong Guo Zhaorong Hu Huiru Peng Guihua Bai Qixin Sun Zhenqi Su Jie Liu Zhongfu Ni 2022Molecular Plant2022,15,3:8
Changes of Biogenic Elements in Phragmites australis and Suaeda salsa from Salt Marshes in Yellow River Delta,China显示文摘Little information is available on biogenic elements(carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur) and the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of plants in coastal wetlands. To investigate the contents of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur of plants, and their ecological stoichiometric characteristics in the Yellow(Huanghe) River Delta, plant samples were collected from two typical salt marshes(Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis wetlands) during the period of from August to October in 2007, and the ratios of C/N, C/P, N/P, C/N/P and C/N/P/S were calculated. Results showed that during the studying period, plant C, N and P were lower than the global average values, and plant N and P were lower than the China's average values. Leaf C and S in Suaeda salsa were significantly lower than those in Phragmites australis(P < 0.05), and leaf N and P in Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis showed no significant differences(P > 0.05). Average C/N ratios were 23.75 in leaf, 73.36 in stem, 65.67 in root of Suaeda salsa, and 33.77 in leaf, 121.68 in stem, 97.13 in root of Phragmites australis. Average C/N ratios of Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis were all great than 25, indicating the salt marsh in the Yellow River Delta is an N limitation system. Average C/P ratios were 276.78 in leaf, 709.28 in stem and 1031.32 in root of Suaeda salsa, and 536.94 in leaf, 768.13 in stem and 875.22 in root of Phragmites australis. The average N/P ratios of Suaeda salsa were 12.92 in leaf, 10.77 in stem and 10.91 in root, and the average N/P ratios of Phragmites australis were 16.40 in leaf, 7.40 in stem and 6.92 in root, indicating the Suaeda salsa wetlands were N limited and Phragmites australis wetlands were N limited in August and P limited in October in 2007. The average C/N, C/P and C/N/P ratios in Suaeda salsa and Pragmites australis were higher than the global average values, indicating the lower quality of organic matter provided by wetland plants in the Yellow River delta.JIA Jia BAI Junhong WANG Wei ZHANG Guangliang WANG Xin ZHAO Qingqing ZHANG Shuai 2018Chinese Geographical Science2018,28,3:7
Vitality and wound-age estimation in forensic pathology:review and future prospects显示文摘Determining the age of a wound is challenging in forensic pathology, but it can contribute to the reconstruction of crime scenes and lead to arrest of suspects.Forensic scholars have tended to focus on evaluating wound vitality and determining the time elapsed since the wound was sustained.Recent progress in forensic techniques, particularly high-throughput analyses, has enabled evaluation of materials at the cellular and molecular levels,as well as simultaneous assessment of multiple markers. This paper provides an update on wound-age estimation in forensic pathology, summarizes the recent literature, and considers useful additional informa-tion provided by each marker. Finally, the future prospects for estimating wound age in foren-sic practise are discussed with the hope of providing something useful for further study.Na Li Qiuxiang Du Rufeng Bai Junhong Sun 2020Forensic Sciences Research2020,5,1:5
AVP(4-8) Improves Cognitive Behaviors and Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity in the APP/PS1 Mouse Model of Alzheimer’s Disease显示文摘Memory deficits with aging are related to the neurodegeneration in the brain, including a reduction in arginine vasopressin(AVP) in the brain of patients with Alzheimer’s disease(AD). AVP(4-8), different from its precursor AVP, plays memory enhancement roles in the CNS without peripheral side-effects. However, it is not clear whether AVP(4-8) can improve cognitive behaviors and synaptic plasticity in the APP/PS1 mouse model of AD. Here, we investigated for the first time the neuroprotective effects of AVP(4-8) on memory behaviors and in vivo long-term potentiation(LTP) in APP/PS1-AD mice. The results showed that:(1) APP/PS1-AD mice had lower spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze than wild-type(WT) mice, and this was significantly reversed by AVP(4-8);(2) the prolonged escape latency of APP/PS1-AD mice in the Morris water maze was significantly decreased by AVP(4-8), and the decreased swimming time in target quadrant recovered significantly after AVP(4-8) treatment;(3) in vivo hippocampal LTP induced by high-frequency stimulation had a significant deficit in the AD mice, and this was partly rescued by AVP(4-8);(4) AVP(4-8)significantly up-regulated the expression levels of postsynaptic density 95(PSD95) and nerve growth factor(NGF)in the hippocampus of AD mice. These results reveal the beneficial effects of AVP(4-8) in APP/PS1-AD mice, showing that the intranasal administration of AVP(4-8)effectively improved the working memory and long-term spatial memory of APP/PS1-AD mice, which may be associated with the elevation of PSD95 and NGF levels in the brain and the maintenance of hippocampal synaptic plasticity.Xiumin Zhang Fang Zhao Chenfang Wang Jun Zhang Yu Bai Fang Zhou Zhaojun Wang Meina Wu Wei Yang Junhong Guo Jinshun Qi 2020Neuroscience Bulletin2020,36,3:3

Soil Nutrient Distribution in Two Typical Paddy Terrace Wetlands Along an Elevation Gradient During the Fallow Period显示文摘Soil nutrient concentrations in the top soils from two paddy terraces were determined in order to investigate spatial distributions of soil nutrients along the elevations on the Yunnan plateau of China during the fallow period. Results showed that soil nutrients in both terraces were higher than the reference concentrations except for SOC,TN,TP and Fe.Soil macronutrients didn't show significant differences in both terraces except for Mg and Ca,so did soil micronutrients except for Mn.Spatial distribution patterns of soil nutrients along the increasing elevations were different in both terraces. However, soil nutrients in both terraces were generally not significantly influenced by the elevations and soil pH values. The findings of this study can contribute to soil fertility management and ecological protection of Hani terraces.WANG Qinggai BAI Junhong HUANG Laibin DENG Wei XIAO Rong ZHANG Kejiang 2011Journal of Mountain Science2011,8,3:2
Analysis of sensitivity and specificity:precise recognition of neutrophils during regeneration of contused skeletal muscle in rats显示文摘In this report,we applied the TissueFAXS 200 digital pathological analysis system to rapidly and accurately identify neutrophils during regeneration of contused skeletal muscle, and to provide information for follow-up studies on neutrophils to estimate wound age.Rat injury model was established, and skeletal muscle samples were obtained from the control group and contusion groups at 1,1.5,2,3,4,and 6 h,as well as at 1,3,5,and 15 d post-injury(n紏5 per group). The expression of nuclei and neutrophils was detected by hematoxylin and eosin(HE)staining and immunohistochemical(IHC)staining.A total of 20 injury site areas of 0.25mm^(2)(0.5mm0.5mm)were then randomly selected at all time points.A TissueFAXS 200 digital pathological analysis system was used to identify the positive and negative numbers.Knowledge of five professional medical workers were considered the gold standard to measure the false positive rate(FPR),false negative rate(FNR),sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve(AUC)of receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves. As a result, with a staining area of neutrophils from 8 μm^(2) to 15 μm^(2),the FPR was 4.28%–12.14%,the FNR was 12.42%–64.08%,the sensitivity was 35.92%–87.58%,the specificity was 87.86%–95.72%,the Youden index was 0.316–0.754,the accuracy was 82.80%–88.30%,and the AUC was 0.771–0.826.The AUC was largest when the cut-off value of the staining area was 12 mm^(2).Our results show that this software-based method is more accurate than the human eye in evaluating neutrophil infiltration.Based on the sensitivity and specificity, neutrophils can be accurately identified during regeneration of contused skeletal muscle. The TissueFAXS 200 digital pathological analysis system can also be used to optimize conditions for different cell types under various injury conditions to determine the optimal cut-off value of the staining area and provide optimal conditions for further study.Furthermore,it will provide evidence for forensic pathology cases.Jiajia Niu Guoshuai An Zhen Gu Peng Li Qiqing Liu Rufeng Bai Junhong Sun Qiuxiang Du 2022Forensic Sciences Research2022,7,2:2
Natural variations of ZmSRO1d modulate the trade-off between drought resistance and yield by affecting ZmRBOHC-mediated stomatal ROS production in maize显示文摘While crop yields have historically increased, drought resistance has become a major concern in the context of global climate change. The trade-off between crop yield and drought resistance is a common phenomenon;however, the underlying molecular modulators remain undetermined.Through genome-wide association study,we revealed that three non-synonymous variants in a drought-resistant allele of ZmSRO1d-R resulted in plasma membrane localization and enhanced mono-ADP-ribosyltransferase activity of ZmSRO1d toward ZmRBOHC,which increased reactive oxygen species(ROS)levels in guard cells and promoted stomatal closure.ZmSRO1d-R enhanced plant drought resilience and protected grain yields under drought conditions, but it led to yield drag under favorable conditions. In contrast,loss-of-function mutants of ZmRBOHC showed remarkably increased yields under well-watered conditions, whereas they showed compromised drought resistance.Interestingly,by analyzing 189 teosinte accessions,we found that the ZmSRO1d-R allele was present in teosinte but was selected against during maize domestication and modern breeding.Collectively, our work suggests that the allele frequency reduction of ZmSRO1d-R in breeding programs may have compromised maize drought resistance while increased yields. Therefore, introduction of the ZmSRO1d-R allele into modern maize cultivars would contribute to food security under drought stress caused by global climate change.Huajian Gao Junjun Cui Shengxue Liu Shuhui Wang Yongyan Lian Yunting Bai Tengfei Zhu Haohao Wu Yijie Wang Shiping Yang Xuefeng Li Junhong Zhuang Limei Chen Zhizhong Gong Feng Qin 2022Molecular Plant2022,15,10:2
Impacts of Coastal Reclamation on Natural Wetlands in Large River Deltas in China显示文摘Little information is available on the impacts of coastal reclamation on wetland loss in large-river deltas at a regional scale.Using remote sensing data of coastal wetland and reclamation in four deltas in China from 1978 to 2014, we tracked their continuous area changes in four periods: 1978–1990, 1990–2000, 2000–2008, and 2008–2014. The areal relation between wetland loss and reclamation was quantified and used to identify coastal reclamation mode intensity coupled with another three indicators: reclamation rate, accretion rate and land-use intensity of coastal reclamation. The results showed that coastal reclamation driven by economic development reduced, or even reverse the original growth of delta which was determined by the offset between wetland acceleration rate and wetland loss rate. Generally, the area of reclamation showed a positive linear correlation with the area of wetland loss. The findings imply that human activities should control reclamation rate and intensity to alleviate total wetland loss and maintain wetland ’net gain’.Inappropriate coastal reclamation modes can magnify total wetland loss;therefore, coastal reclamation with a slow increment rate and low impervious surface percent is of great importance for sustainable development in future coastal management.MA Tiantian LI Xiaowen BAI Junhong CUI Baoshan 2019Chinese Geographical Science2019,29,4:2

Gasdermins:pore-forming activities and beyond显示文摘Gasdermins(GSDMs)belong to a protein superfamily that is found only in vertebrates and consists of GSDMA,GSDMB,GSDMC,GSDMD,DFNA5(a.k.a.GSDME)and DFNB59(a.k.a.Pejvakin(PJVK))in humans.Except for DFNB59,all members of the GSDM superfamily contain a conserved twodomain structure(N-terminal and C-terminal domains)and share an autoinhibitory mechanism. When the N-terminal domain of these GSDMs is released,it possesses pore-forming activity that causes inflammatory death associated with the loss of cell membrane integrity and release of inflammatory mediators. It has also been found that spontaneous mutations occurring in the genes of GSDMs have been associated with the development of certain autoimmune disorders,as well as cancers. Here,we review the current knowledge of the expression profile and regulation of GSDMs and the important roles of this protein family in inflammatory cell death, tumorigenesis and other related diseases.Zengzhang Zheng Wanyan Deng Xiwen Lou Yang Bai Junhong Wang Huasong Zeng Sitang Gong Xing Liu 2020Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2020,52,5:2

Soil microbial communities regulate the threshold effect of salinity stress on SOM decomposition in coastal salt marshes显示文摘Salinity stress is one of the critical environmental drivers of soil organic matter(SOM)decomposition in coastal ecosystems.Although the temperature sensitivity(Q_(10))of SOM decomposition has been widely applied in Earth system models to forecast carbon processes, the impact of salinity on SOM decomposition by restructuring microbial communities remains uncovered. Here,we conducted a microcosm experiment with soils collected from the coastal salt marsh in the Yellow River Estuary, which is subjected to strong dynamics of salinity due to both tidal flooding and drainage.By setting a gradient of salt solutions, soil salinity was adjusted to simulate salinity stress and soil carbon emission(CO_(2))rate was measured over the period. Results showed that as salinity increased, the estimated decomposition constants based on first-order kinetics gradually decreased at different temperatures.Below the 20‰salinity treatments, which doubled the soil salinity,Q_(10)increased with increasing salinity;but higher salinity constrained the temperature-related response of SOM decomposition by inhibiting microbial growth and carbon metabolisms.Soil bacteria were more sensitive to salinity stress than fungi, which can be inferred from the response of microbial beta-diversity to changing salinity.Among them, the phylotypes assigned to Gammaproteobacteria and Bacilli showed higher salt tolerance, whereas taxa affiliated with Alphaproteobacteria and Bacteroidota were more easily inhibited by the salinity stress.Several fungal taxa belonging to Ascomycota had higher adaptability to the stress. As the substrate was consumed with the incubation, bacterial competition intensified, but the fungal co-occurrence pattern changed weakly during decomposition.Collectively, these findings revealed the threshold effect of salinity on SOM decomposition in coastal salt marshes and emphasized that salt stress plays a key role in carbon sequestration by regulating microbial keystone taxa, metabolisms, and interactions.Guangliang Zhang Junhong Bai Jia Jia Wei Wang Dawei Wang Qingqing Zhao Chen Wang Guozhu Chen 2023Fundamental Research2023,3,6:1
