| 1 | A body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 is associated with a poor prognosis in patients with acute pancreatitis: a study of Japanese patients显示文摘BACKGROUND:In Asian population, there is limited infor mation on the relevance between obesity and poor outcomes in acute pancreatitis(AP). The objective of this study was to examine the clinical impact of obesity based on body mass index(BMI) on prognosis of AP in Japanese patients.METHODS:A total of 116 patients with AP were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine relations between BMI and patients' outcomes. Additionally, to investigate whether including obesity as a prognostic factor improved the predic tive accuracy of a Japanese prognostic factor score(PF score)a receiver-operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis of mortality was conducted.RESULTS:Multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that BMI ≥25 kg/m^2 was associated with a significant higher mor tality [odds ratio(OR)=15.8; 95% confidence interval(CI):1.1-227; P=0.043]. | 2 | An association between Helicobacter pylori and upper respiratory tract disease: Fact or fiction?显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is a major cause of chronic gastritis and gastric ulcers and considerable evidence supports the notion that infection with this bacterium is also associated with gastric malignancy in addition to various other conditions including pulmonary, vascular and autoimmune disorders. Gastric juice infected with H. pylori might play an important role in upper respiratory tract infection. Although direct and/or indirect mechanisms might be involved in the association between H. pylori and upper respiratory tract diseases, the etiological role of H. pylori in upper respiratory tract disorders has not yet been fully elucidated. Although various studies over the past two decades have suggested a relationship between H. pylori and upper respiratory tract diseases, the findings are inconsistent. | 3 | Relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis and lower airway diseases: An extensive review显示文摘Significant links between allergic rhinitis and asthma have been reported, and the united airway disease hypothesis is supported by numerous findings in epidemiologic, physiologic, pathologic, and immunologic studies. The impact of allergic rhinitis on asthma has been established. On the other hand, the relationship between chronic rhinosinusitis and lung diseases has been under investigation. Chronic rhinosinusitis is a common disease, and the high prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis in some kinds of lung diseases has been reported. Recent studies suggest that the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis has beneficial effects in the management of asthma.
