| 1 | Effect of Exogenous Melatonin on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth in Melon(Cucumis melo L.) Under Salt Stress显示文摘An investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of different application forms and concentrations of melatonin on germination and initial growth of melon plants in several different salinity conditions. We evaluated germination percentage and growth of seedlings and measured total chlorophyll content, relative electrolyte leakage, peroxidase activity, root viability, proline concentration, relative water content,Na^+/K^+ratio in green parts and K^+leakage from roots. Seed germination percentage under salt stress increased with treatments of 10 and50 μmol·L^(-1) melatonin. Seed treatment and plant watering with melatonin at 50 μmol·L^(-1) improved growth parameters and plants showed higher chlorophyll content as well as better biochemical parameters than non-treated plants. | 13 | Design and fabrication of a vigorous“cavitation-on-a-chip”device with a multiple microchannel configuration显示文摘Hydrodynamic cavitation is one of the major phase change phenomena and occurs with a sudden decrease in the local static pressure within a fluid.With the emergence of microelectromechanical systems(MEMS),high-speed microfluidic devices have attracted considerable attention and been implemented in many fields,including cavitation applications.In this study,a new generation of‘cavitation-on-a-chip’devices with eight parallel structured microchannels is proposed.This new device is designed with the motivation of decreasing the upstream pressure(input energy)required for facile hydrodynamic cavitation inception.Water and a poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)microbubble(MB)suspension are used as the working fluids.The results show that the cavitation inception upstream pressure can be reduced with the proposed device in comparison with previous studies with a single flow restrictive element.Furthermore,using PVA MBs further results in a reduction in the upstream pressure required for cavitation inception.In this new device,different cavitating flow patterns with various intensities can be observed at a constant cavitation number and fixed upstream pressure within the same device.Moreover,cavitating flows intensify faster in the proposed device for both water and the water–PVA MB suspension in comparison to previous studies.Due to these features,this next-generation‘cavitation-on-a-chip’device has a high potential for implementation in applications involving microfluidic/organ-on-a-chip devices,such as integrated drug release and tissue engineering. | Farzad Rokhsar Talabazar Mohammad Jafarpour Merve Zuvin Hongjian Chen Moein Talebian Gevari Luis Guillermo Villanueva Dmitry Grishenkov Ali Koşar Morteza Ghorbani | 2021 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2021,7,3: | 0 |
| 14 | Anti-inflammatory effects of Mangifera indica L.extract in a model of colitis显示文摘AIM:To investigate the effect of aqueous extract from Mangifera indica L.(MIE)on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in rats.METHODS:MIE(150 mg/kg)was administered in two different protocols:(1)rectally,over 7 d at the same time as DSS administration;and(2)once daily over 14 d (by oral gavage,7 d before starting DSS,and rectally for 7 d during DSS administration).General observations of clinical signs were performed.Anti-inflammatory activity of MIE was assessed by myeloperoxidase(MPO)activity. Colonic lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS).Reduced glutathione(GSH)levels,expression of inflammatory related mediators[inducible isoforms of nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2,respectively]and cytokines[tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αand TNF receptors 1 and 2]in colonic tissue were also assessed.Interleukin(IL)-6 and TNF-α serum levels were also measured. RESULTS:The results demonstrated that MIE has anti-inflammatory properties by improvement of clinical signs,reduction of ulceration and reduced MPO activity when administered before DSS.In addition,administration of MIE for 14 d resulted in an increase in GSH and reduction of TBARS levels and iNOS,COX-2, TNF-αand TNF R-2 expression in colonic tissue,and a decrease in IL-6 and TNF-αserum levels. | 16 | Risk of gastrointestinal cancer in a symptomatic cohort after a complete colonoscopy:Role of faecal immunochemical test显示文摘BACKGROUND Faecal immunochemical test(FIT)has been recommended to assess symptomatic patients for colorectal cancer(CRC)detection.Nevertheless,some conditions could theoretically favour blood originating in proximal areas of the gastrointestinal tract passing through the colon unmetabolized.A positive FIT result could be related to other gastrointestinal cancers(GIC).AIM To assess the risk of GIC detection and related death in FIT-positive symptomatic patients(threshold 10μg Hb/g faeces)without CRC.METHODS Post hoc cohort analysis performed within two prospective diagnostic test studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of different FIT analytical systems for CRC and significant colonic lesion detection.Ambulatory patients with gastrointestinal symptoms referred consecutively for colonoscopy from primary and secondary healthcare,underwent a quantitative FIT before undergoing a complete colonoscopy.Patients without CRC were divided into two groups(positive and negative FIT)using the threshold of 10μg Hb/g of faeces and data from follow-up were retrieved from electronic medical records of the public hospitals involved in the research.We determined the cumulative risk of GIC,CRC and upper GIC.Hazard rate(HR)was calculated adjusted by age,sex and presence of significant colonic lesion.RESULTS We included 2709 patients without CRC and a complete baseline colonoscopy,730(26.9%)with FIT≥10μgr Hb/gr.During a mean time of 45.5±20.0 mo,a GIC was detected in 57(2.1%)patients:An upper GIC in 35(1.3%)and a CRC in 14(0.5%).Thirty-six patients(1.3%)died due to GIC:22(0.8%)due to an upper GIC and 9(0.3%)due to CRC.FIT-positive subjects showed a higher CRC risk(HR 3.8,95%CI:1.2-11.9)with no differences in GIC(HR 1.5,95%CI:0.8-2.7)or upper GIC risk(HR 1.0,95%CI:0.5-2.2).Patients with a positive FIT had only an increased risk of CRC-related death(HR 10.8,95%CI:2.1-57.1)and GIC-related death(HR 2.2,95%CI:1.1-4.3),with no differences in upper GIC-related death(HR 1.4,95%CI:0.6-3.3).An upper GIC was detected in 22(0.8%)patients during the first year.Two variables were independently associated:anaemia(OR 5.6,95%CI:2.2-13.9)and age≥70 years(OR 2.7,95%CI:1.1-7.0).CONCLUSION Symptomatic patients without CRC have a moderate risk increase in upper GIC,regardless of the FIT result.Patients with a positive FIT have an increased risk of post-colonoscopy CRC. | Noel Pin-Vieito María J Iglesias David Remedios Lorena Rodríguez-Alonso Francisco Rodriguez-Moranta VictoriaÁlvarez-Sánchez Fernando Fernández-Bañares Jaume Boadas Eva Martínez-Bauer Rafael Campo Luis Bujanda Ángel Ferrandez Virginia Piñol Daniel Rodríguez-Alcalde Jordi Guardiola Joaquín Cubiella | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,1: | 0 |
| 17 | Camera traps reveal the natural corridors used by mammalian species in eastern Mexico显示文摘Background:Habitat loss and fragmentation in the Sierra Madre Oriental(SMO)ecological corridor have negative impacts on the movement and distribution of mammalian species that are of great ecological and evolutionary importance.Part of the SMO ecological corridor that is located in the state of Hidalgo is less studied despite being a potential dispersal route for mammals.The objectives of this study were to evaluate the presence and activity of terrestrial mammals in the riparian and non‑riparian zones of SMO.Results:Camera traps detected 15 mammalian species(i.e.,14 native and 1 domestic)in the non‑riparian zone,and 12 mammalian species in the riparian zone(i.e.,10 wild and 2 domestic).The riparian corridor was mainly used by opportunistic medium‑sized carnivores,while large carnivores and their potential prey were more frequent in the non‑riparian zone.Conclusions:Our findings suggest terrestrial mammals avoid the use of natural corridors due to the presence of domestic dogs,cattle and humans and look for new dispersal routes to move through their habitat and find the resources they need to survive.Even though some species can use disturbed corridors to move and find resources,they will change their activity patterns to avoid contact with humans and potential threats like dogs.It is,therefore,crucial to identify not one,but several corridors that must be preserved to improve the connectivity of terrestrial mammals in disturbed landscapes. | Jonathan O.Huerta‑Rodríguez Octavio C.Rosas‑Rosas Lauro López‑Mata JoséL.Alcántara‑Carbajal Luis A.Tarango‑Arámbula | 2022 | Ecological Processes2022,11,1: | 0 |
