1The timing of tectonic transition from compression to extension in Dabieshan: Evidence from Mesozoic granites显示文摘With the methods of single grain zircon U-Pb and hornblende-biotite Ar-Ar dating, a U-Pb zircon age (135.4(2.7) Ma of Liujiawa high Sr/Y granite and 40Ar-39Ar plateau ages (139.0(1.0) Ma and (125.3(0.2) Ma of hornblende and biotite respectively of Fenliupu high Sr/Y granite in the Dabieshan high- and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt are yielded. Following the emplacement of the high Sr/Y granites, extension-related mafic intrusions and late granitoids with negative Sr and Eu anomalies and isotopic ages of 105-130 Ma were emplaced. Geochemical comparison between the two types of granitoids shows that, from early to late, the alkalinities, the K2O contents and the Sr/Y ratios as well as FeO/(FeO+MgO) ratios of the rocks increase, while the abundance of Sr reduces, suggesting that as time goes on the depth of crustal melting decreases. Rheological stratification of the crust due to early Cretaceous partial melting of crustal rocks resulted in crustal extension and deep-buried rock exhumation. 2Discovery of Paleoproterozoic rapakivi granite on the northern margin of the Yangtze block and its geological significance显示文摘The Huashanguan rapakivi pluton in Zhongxiang,Hubei Province,China,is the first discovered Proterozoic rapakivi pluton in the Yangtze block.Based on field and petrographical observations,a typical rapakivi texture was found in the northern portion of the Huashanguan granitic pluton.Almost all the K-feldspar phenocrysts were round to oval in shape and most had plagioclase coatings known as rapakivi phenocrysts.Alkali feldspars and quartz had two or more generations.Petrochemically,the Huashanguan rapakivi granites were characterized as having high values of Si,K,Fe,Th,U,La,Ga,Ce,Sm and LREE,low values of Ca,Mg,Sr,Nb,Y and HREE,and a negative Eu anomaly.These geochemical characteristics of the Huashanguan granites were concordant with typical rapakivi granites,and had an affinity to A-type granites.LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating also was conducted.The dating yielded a 207Pb/206Pb weighted mean age of 1851±18 Ma (MSWD =1.2),which represents the age of the pluton emplacement.The age of 803±170 Ma at the lower intercept in the concordia diagram corresponds to the age of a later deformation event which affected the pluton,and suggests that the Huashanguan pluton was influenced by Neoproterozoic thermo-tectonic events after its formation.The discovery of Paleoproterozoic Huashanguan rapakivi granites indicates continental rifting or a post-orogenic extensional event that took place in the Paleoproterozoic in the Yangtze block.These events may be related to the breakup of the Paleoproterozoic Columbia supercontinent.ZHANG LiJuan MA ChangQian WANG LianXun SHE ZhenBing WANG ShiMing 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,3:37
3Discovery of the Indosinian aluminum A-type granite in Zhejiang Province and its geological significance显示文摘Zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of the Jingju syenogranites in the southwestern part of Zhejiang Province shows that these rocks were crystallized in the Late Triassic at 215±2 Ma, rather than in the Cretaceous as previously proposed. The Jingju syenogranites are characterized by relatively high K 2 O and FeO*, and low MgO. They have high concentrations of large ion lithophile elements (LIL) and LREE, such as K, Th, La, and Ce, but are depleted in high field strength elements (HFSE) such as Nb, Ta, and Ti. Their 10 4 Ga/Al ratios and (Zr+Nb+Ce+Y) contents are also high. These characteristics are similar to those of A-type granites. The syenogranites have high I Sr (0.7179-0.7203), low ε Nd (t) (from 14.2 to 13.2), and relatively old T 2DM ages, similar to those of the ancient metamorphic basement in the Cathaysia Block. It is suggested that the Jingju syenogranites were formed by partial melting of the Cathaysia basement rocks during tectonic extension. 4Geochronology and Petrogenesis of Triassic High-K Calc-Alkaline Granodiorites in the East Kunlun Orogen,West China:Juvenile Lower Crustal Melting during Post-Collisional Extension显示文摘This study reports zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopes and whole-rock elemental data for granodiorites from the East Kunlun orogen. The zircon U-Pb dating defines their crystallization age of 235 Ma. The rocks are characterized by high-K calc-alkaline, magnesian and metaluminous with(K_2O+Na_2O)=6.38 wt.%–7.01 wt.%, Mg#=42–50 [Mg#=100×molar Mg/(Mg+Fe OT)], A/CNK=0.92–0.98, coupled with high εHf(t) values from-0.65 to-1.80. The rocks were derived from partial melting of a juvenile mafic crustal source within normal crust thickness. The juvenile lower crust was generated by mixing lithospheric mantle-derived melt(55%–60%) and supracrustal melt(40%–45%) during the seafloor subduction. 5The latest Yanshanian magmatic and metallogenic events in the middle-lower Yangtze River belt: Evidence from the Ningzhen region显示文摘The Ningzhen region in Jiangsu Province represents the easternmost magmatic region in the middle-lower Yangtze River belt.The formation of the polymetallic deposits has close genetic relationships with Early Cretaceous intermediate-acid intrusions.In this study,LA-ICP-MS zircon geochronology of two Mesozoic intermediate-acid intrusive rocks(including the Shima porphyritic granodiorite and Gaozi quartz diorite porphyry)in the Ningzhen region were systematically investigated.These new geochronological data demonstrate that the intermediate-acid magmatism in the Ningzhen region dates to approximately between 109 and101 Ma.We present new40Ar-39Ar phlogopite ages for the Cishantou skarn iron deposits that constrain the timing of the mineralisation in the Ningzhen region.The phlogopite in the Cishantou skarn deposits yielded a40Ar-39Ar plateau age of 104±1 Ma.This result coincides with the ages of the Anjishan and Tongshan Cu(Mo)deposits in the Ningzhen region.Our high-precision geochronological data together with recent high-precision geochronological studies(such as zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb,zircon SHRIMP U-Pb,molybdenite Re-Os and single-mineral40Ar-39Ar dates)reveal that there were four periods(152-135 Ma,135-127 Ma,127-121 Ma,109-101 Ma)of magmatism and ore formation in the middle-lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt.The Mesozoic intermediate-acid magmatism and mineralisation in the Ningzhen region belong to the latest episode in the middle-lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt.SUN Yang MA ChangQian LIU YuanYuan 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,34:13

7Genesis of Highly Fractionated I-Type Granites from Fengshun Complex:Implications to Tectonic Evolutions of South China显示文摘The South China Block is characterized by the large-scale emplacement of felsic magmas and giant ore deposits during the Yanshanian. We present zircon Hf isotopic compositions, whole-rock major and trace element compositions of the Fengshun complex, located in eastern Guangdong Province, South China. The Fengshun complex is a multi-stage magmatic intrusion. It is composed of two main units, i.e., the Mantoushan(MTS) syeno-monzogranites, alkali feldspar granites and the Hulutian(HLT) alkali feldspar granites. LA-ICPMS zircon dating shows that the complex emplaced in 166–161 and 139±2 Ma, respectively. Geochemically, the MTS granites show relatively various geochemical compositions with low REE contents(87.76×10^(-6)–249.71×10^(-6)), Rb/Sr ratios(1.19–58.93), pronounced Eu negative anomaly(0.01–0.37) and low Nb/Ta ratios(2.40–6.82). In contrast, the HLT granites exhibit relatively stable geochemical characteristics with high REE contents(147.35×10^(-6)– 282.17×10^(-6)), Rb/Sr ratios(2.05–10.30) and relatively high Nb/Ta ratios(4.45–13.00). The isotopic data of the MTS granites display relatively enriched values, with I_(Sr) varying from 0.708 2 to 0.709 7, εNd(t) from-7.8 to-6.9 and εHf(t) from-7.4 to-3.2, in comparison with those of the HLT which are I_(Sr)=0.703 05–0.704 77, εNd(t)=-5–-3.4 and εHf(t)=-0.7–1.8). The two-stage model ages of the MTS granites(T_(2DM)(Nd)=1.51–1.59 Ga and T_(2DM)(Hf)=1.26–1.48 Ga) are also higher than those of the HLT granites(T_(2DM)(Nd)=1.21–1.34 Ga and T_(2DM)(Hf)=0.96–1.10 Ga). Thus the MTS and HLT granites might originate from different sources. The former is more likely derived from partial melting of Meso-Proterozoic basement triggered by upwelling of asthenosphere and/or underplate of the basaltic magma and then extensive fractional crystallisation, similar to the genesis of Early Yanshanian granitoids of the EW-trending tectono-magmatism belt in the Nanling range. In comparison, the latter might have involved with asthenosphere component, similar to the Early Cretaceous granitoids of NE-NNE-trending granitoid-volcanic belt in coastal region, southeastern China. We propose that the MTS granites were mainly formed in Paleo-Tethyan post-orogenic extensional tectonic setting whereas the HLT granites were formed in the back-arc extensional tectonic setting. 8Discovery and Significance of Diamonds and Moissanites in Chromitite within the Skenderbeu Massif of the Mirdita Zone Ophiolite,West Albania显示文摘In recent years diamonds and other unusual minerals(carbides,nitrides,metal alloys and native elements) have been recovered from mantle peridotites and chromitites(both high-Cr chromitites and high-Al chromitites) from a number of ophiolites of different ages and tectonic settings.Here we report a similar assemblage of minerals from the Skenderbeu massif of the Mirdita zone ophiolite,west Albania.So far,more than 20 grains of microdiamonds and 30 grains of moissanites(SiC) have been separated from the podiform chromitite.The diamonds are mostly light yellow,transparent,euhedral crystals,200~300 μm across,with a range of morphologies;some are octahedral and cuboctahedron and others are elongate and irregular.Secondary electron images show that some grains have well-developed striatums.All the diamond grains have been analyzed and yielded typical Raman spectra with a shift at ~1325 cm^(-1).The moissanite grains recovered from the Skenderbeu chromitites are mainly light blue to dark blue,but some are yellow to light yeUow.All the analyzed grains have typical Raman spectra with shifts at 766 cm^(-1),787 cm^(-1),and 967 cm^(-1).The energy spectrums of the moissanites confirm that the grains are composed entirely of silicon and carbon.This investigation expands the occurrence of diamonds and moissanites to Mesozoic ophiolites in the Neo-Tethys.Our new findings suggest that diamonds and moissanites are present,and probably ubiquitous in the oceanic mantle and can provide new perspectives and avenues for research on the origin of ophiolites and podiform chromitites.WU Weiwei YANG Jingsui MA Changqian MILUSHI Ibrahim LIAN Dongyang TIAN Yazhou 2017Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2017,91,3:10
9Apatite-fission-track geochronology and its tectonic correlation in the Dabieshan orogen,central China显示文摘AFT data of granitoid and metamorphic samples from the Dabieshan orogen have an age range between 96.4 Ma and 41.9 Ma coupled with confined track lengths of 11.5—14.0 μm, reflecting the cooling time of rocks differentially through the 100℃± isotherm. The Juras- sic-Eogene sediments from the North Huaiyang and Hefei basin, however, yield their AFT ages of 128.8—62.0 Ma with mean track lengths of 8.6—11.9 μm, recording a complicated thermal de- velopment of the basin. These AFT data structurally allowing the coupling between the orogen and the basin are to a great extent considered as the result from the control of NNE-trending regional tectonics. It took place approximately at 95—90 Ma that the orogen developed with an abrupt shift from the doming extension to the differential transtension, which is assumed to be related with the changes of the convergence between the Western Pacific and Eurasia plates. The differentially sinistral strike-slipping from the transtension between Tanlu and Shang- cheng-Macheng faults brought the doming extension of the orogen shrunk sharply in Late Cre- taceous. In Eogene, the full-grown transtension that dominated in East Asia was caused mainly by a rapid decrease of the rates of the Western Pacific convergence, which can be therefore re- garded as a major mechanism creating the zonal anomalies of 60—40 Ma in the orogen. The thermal anomaly of 70—40 Ma zonally along the Tanlu fault cooled more slowly than the anomaly of 60—55 Ma zoning along the Shangcheng-Macheng fault, but the 60—40 Ma anomaly trending E-W in hinterlands of the orogen seems to be relicts of the doming extension as a result of inten- sive rebuilding by the transtension. In addition, the orogen was also reactivated by the far-field effect from India-Asia collision in Eogene, where major NWW-trending faults played an important role in facilitating such far-field tectonic transferring. In Oligocene to Miocene, the Dabieshan orogen remained a few thermal disturbances with their AFT ages particularly in coincidence with the time of opening and closing of the South China Sea.P. 10Silurian A-type granitoids in the southern margin of the Tongbai-Dabieshan: Evidence from SHRIMP zircon geochronology and geochemistry显示文摘SHRIMP U-Pb dating on magmatic zircons extracted from a riebeckite quartz syenite in the Huangyangshan pluton in Suizhou, the southern margin of Tongbai-Dabieshan yielded an age of 439±6Ma. According to the morphology and high Th/U ratios of the zircons, the age is interpreted as crystallization timing of the pluton. The Huangyangshan pluton is composed of peralkaline quartz syenite, alkaline granite and syenite. All of the rocks are characterized by high agpaitic index (A.I.=(Na+K)/Al, molar ratio) and Fe-number [FeOT/(FeOT+MgO)], low CaO and MgO contents, enrichment of high field strength elements (i.e. Nb, Zr, Ga, Y, Hf) and light REEs, evidently negative Eu anomalies and high Ga/Al ratios, which are consistent with anorogenic A-type granitoids. 11U-Pb Geochronology of Detrital and Inherited Zircons in the Yidun Arc Belt, Eastern Tibet Plateau and Its Tectonic Implications显示文摘This paper reports geochronological data of detrital zircons from the country rock and sedimentary xenoliths of the Cilincuo pluton(79±0.7 Ma) in the southern Yidun arc belt and the inherited zircons from the Late Triassic granites in the eastern Yidun arc belt, eastern Tibet Plateau. Detrital zircons ages from the sedimentary xenoliths have four prominent peaks at 2.5–2.4 Ga, 1.9–1.8 Ga, 480–400 Ma, and 350–300 Ma, whereas those from the country rock exhibit another four prominent peaks at 1.9–1.8 Ga, 850–700 Ma, 480–400 Ma, and 300–250 Ma. Based on comparison with age data from previous studies, we suggest that the sedimentary xenoliths are from the Lanashan Formation and the major provenance of them is Qiangtang Block, Zhongza massif and South China Block, whereas the country rock belongs to the Lamaya Formation and the major provenance of them is similar to those of the neighbouring Songpan-Garzê terrane. In addition, the inherited zircons from the Late Triassic granites in the eastern Yidun arc belts have a prominent Neoproterozoic age population(900–700 Ma), which suggests that there is an old basement with west Yangtze Craton affinity beneath the Triassic sediments. 12Petrogenesis and Tectonic Implications of Peralkaline A-Type Granites and Syenites from the Suizhou-Zaoyang Region,Central China显示文摘In this study, we present systematic petrological, geochemical, LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages and Nd isotopic data for the A-type granites and syenites from Suizhou-Zaoyang region. The results show that the peralkaline A-type granites and syenites were episodically emplaced in Suizhou-Zaoyang region between 450±3 and 441±7 Ma which corresponds to Late Ordovician and Early Silurian periods, respectively. Petrologically, the syenite-peralkaline granite association comprises of nepheline normative-syenite and alkaline granite in Guanzishan and quartz normative syenite and alkaline granite in Huangyangshan. The syenite-granite associations are ferroan to alkali in composition. They depict characteristics of typical OIB(oceanic island basalts) derived A-type granites in multi-elements primitive normalized diagram and Yb/Ta vs. Y/Nb as well as Ce/Nb vs. Y/Nb binary plots. Significant depletion in Ba, Sr, P, Ti and Eu indicates fractionation of feldspars, biotite, amphiboles and Ti-rich augite. The values of ?Nd(t) in Guanzishan nepheline syenite and alkaline granite are +1.81 and +2.26, respectively and the calculated two-stage model age for these rocks are 1 040 and 1 003 Ma, respectively. On the other hand, the Huangyangshan alkaline granite has ?Nd(t) values ranging from +2.61 to +3.46 and a relatively younger two-stage Nd model age values ranging from 906 to 975 Ma, respectively. Based on these data, we inferred that the Guanzishan nepheline syenites and granites were formed from fractional crystallization of OIB-like basic magmas derived from upwelling of metasomatized lithospheric mantle. The Huangyangshan quartz syenite and granite on the other hand, were formed from similar magmas through fractional crystallization with low input from the ancient crustal rocks. 13The Southward Extension of Cathaysia Block: Evidence from Zircon UPb Dates of Borehole Volcanics in the Northern South China Sea显示文摘Five Paleogene volcanics sampled from the northern South China Sea were analyzed via LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating,including basalt and andesite from Borehole SCSV1 and volcanic agglomerate from Borehole SCSV2,respectively.A total of 162 zircon U-Pb dates for them cover an age range from Neoarchean to Eocene,in which the pre-Paleocene data dominate.The Paleogene dates of 62.5±2.2 Ma and 42.1±2.9 Ma are associated with two igneous episodes prior to opening of South China Sea basin.Those pre-Paleocene zircons are inherited zircons mostly with magmatogenic oscillatory zones,and have REE features of crustal zircon.Zircon U-Pb dates of 2518–2481 Ma,1933– 1724 Ma,and 1094–1040 Ma from the SCSV1 volcanics,and 2810–2718 Ma,2458–2421 Ma,and 1850 –993.4 Ma from the SCSV2 volcanics reveal part of Precambrian evolution of the northern South China Sea,well comparable with age records dated from the Cathaysia block.The data of 927.0±6.9 Ma and 781±38 Ma dated from the SCSV2 coincide with amalgamation between Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks and breakup of the Rodinia,respectively.The age records of Caledonian orogeny from the Cathaysia block are widely found from our volcanic samples with concordant mean ages of 432.0±5.8 Ma from the SCSV1 and of 437±15 Ma from the SCSV2.The part of the northern South China Sea resembling the Cathaysia underwent Indosinian and Yanshannian tectonothermal events.Their age signatures from the SCSV1 cover 266.5±3.5 Ma,241.1±6.0 Ma,184.0±4.2 Ma,160.9±4.2 Ma and 102.8±2.6 Ma,and from the SCSV2 are 244±15 Ma,158.1±3.5 Ma,141±13 Ma and 96.3±2.1 Ma.Our pre-Paleogene U-Pb age spectra of zircons from the borehole volcanics indicate that the northern South China Sea underwent an evolution from formation of Precambrian basement,Caledonian orogeny,and Indosinian orogeny to Yanshannian magmatism.This process can be well comparable with the tectonic evolution of South China,largely supporting the areas of the northern South China Sea as part of southward extension of the Cathaysia.XU Changhai QUE Xiaoming SHI Hesheng ZHOU Zuyi MA Changqian 2013Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2013,87,5:5
14The Early Paleozoic Tiefosi syn-collisional granite in the northern Dabie Orogen:Geochronological and geochemical constraints显示文摘The Tiefosi granitic pluton is located 5 km northwest of Xinyang City,northern Dabie Orogen,and was emplaced in the Proterozoic Qinling Group. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating suggests its crystallization at 436 ± 11 Ma. It is composed of monzogranite and syenogranite containing some amounts of muscovite and few mafic minerals. The rocks are characterized by high and restricted SiO2 content,low FeO,Fe2O3 and MgO contents,high K2O/Na2O ratio,and display high-K calc-alkaline and peraluminous (ACNK>1.1) characteristics. They are generally enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSE). They can be divided into three groups in light of rare earth elements (REE) and trace elements. Group I is moderate in ΣREE and characterized by the absence of Eu anom-aly,high (La/Yb)N ratio,and moderate Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios. Group Ⅱ has moderately negative Eu anomaly,low (La/Yb)N ratio and high ΣREE contents,Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios. Group Ⅲ displays positive Eu anomaly,moderate (La/Yb)N ratio,and low ΣREE,Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba ratios. The calculated εNd(440Ma) values of the rocks vary from 8.8 to 9.9 and Nd depleted mantle model ages are about 2.0 Ga,which resemble those of the paragneisses from the Qinling Group. The results indicate that the Tiefosi granite is crust-derived,syn-collisional S-type granite. Generation of Group I was related to low degree melting of the Qinling Group,while Group Ⅱ was formed by fractionational crystallization of plagioclase from Group I magmas,and Group Ⅲ resulted possibly from magma mingling with plagioclase cumulates. 15The Magma-dynamic Mechaism of Emplacement and Compositional Zonation of the Zhoukoudian Stock, Beijing显示文摘The Zhoukoudian stock in Beijing is a concentric zoned complex intrusive body formed by two successive intrusions. Quartz-diorite formed by the first intrusion is scattered sparsely on the margins of the body, while granodiorite resulting from the second intrusion constitutes the main part of the intrusion. It exhibits three distinct petrographic zones macroscopically, and is chemically characterized by enrichment of high-temperature components, such as Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn. Fe and Co, on its border and merely slight enrichment of some low-temperature components, such as Na and Si, in its central part. A series of structural features indicate that the deformation of the intrusion and thermo-metamorphic rocks becomes weaker with an increase of distance from the contact, and that the intrusive body is a product of ballooning or inflating diapiric emplacement. Based on calculations of the density, viscosity and yield strength of magma and the reasonable diffusion constants and oxygen isotopic data, the mechanism of the compositional zonation of the major part of the stock is discussed. It is considered that the Soret effect, combined with double-diffusive convection, can explain the compositional zonation of the intrusion. 18Microstructure and magnetic fabric in the Shuanghe pluton:A synkinematic granite in Eastern Dabie Mountains,China显示文摘Strain analyses for the Shuanghe pluton show that the main strain planes suffered distinct deformation. The main strain value (XZ) is up to 1.59—2.18, and the value of Flinn index (K) ranges from 0.11 to 0.82. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) measurements reveal that the orientations of the magnetic foliation and lineation gently dip SE, consistent with the macroscopic foliation of the pluton. The value of anisotropy degree (P) ranges from 1.109 to 1.639, and the shape parameter (T) from 0.079 to 0.534. These studies prove that the pluton was deformed under strong compression. Quartz c-axis textures, defined by monoclinic or triclinic asymmetry, usually developed the high maxima paralleling the b-axis, which is defined by the prismatic slip (1010)der the high temperature. These fabrics are quite different from those developed in the high-ultrahigh pressure rocks (UHP) which were captured in the pluton or country rocks. 19Geochronology,Geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Pb Isotopic Study of the Wulong Flower-Like Glomerophyric Diorite Porphyry(Central China):Implications for Tectonic Evolution of Eastern Qinling显示文摘The Wulong diorite porphyry displays a very unusual flower-like glomerophyric texture and is thus well-known as a gemstone type of 'Luoyang peony stone' for non-geologists. Hereby, we present a comprehensive study in terms of petrography, zircon U-Pb geochronology, geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope. The rock exposed as small-scale dykes in the field, intruding in the Archean migmatized biotiteplagioclase genesis at the southern margin of the North China Craton. It exhibits typical porphyrite texture with plagioclase and amphibole as dominant and subdominant phenocrysts, respectively. The diorite porphyry rocks contain 51 wt.%–59 wt.% SiO_2, belonging to medium-K calc-alkaline rock series. They are characterized by enrichment of large ion lithophile elements(LILEs, e.g., Ba) and depletion of high field-strength elements(HFSEs, e.g., Nb, Ta, Zr and Hf), resembling island arc magmatic rocks. They show high initial Sr isotopic ratios(0.710 7–0.715 8), low ε_(Nd)(t) values(-9.9 to-13.3) and variable initial Pb isotopic ratios(^(206)Pb/^(204)Pb vary from 17.3 to 19.3), similar to the coeval intermediate and mafic magmatic rocks of adjacent region. These geochemical features indicate that the Wulong diorite porphyry is likely to originate from an enriched mantle with contamination of crustal materials. Zircon U-Pb dating results reveal a magma crystallization age of 480±3 Ma, consistent with the summit of the magmatic events of the Qinling orogenic belt and reflecting the northernmost Paleozoic magmatic activity of the belt.
