Selective elimination of chromophoric and fluorescent dissolved organic matter in a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant显示文摘Effluent organic matter(Ef OM) from municipal wastewater treatment plants potentially has a detrimental effect on both aquatic organisms and humans. This study evaluated the removal and transformation of chromophoric dissolved organic matter(CDOM) and fluorescent dissolved organic matter(FDOM) in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant under different seasons. The results showed that bio-treatment was found to be more efficient in removing bulk DOM(in term of dissolved organic carbon,DOC) than CDOM and FDOM,which was contrary to the disinfection process.CDOM and FDOM were selectively removed at various stages during the treatment.Typically, the low molecular weight fractions of CDOM and protein-like FDOM were more efficiently removed during bio-treatment process, whereas the humic-like FDOM exhibited comparable decreases in both bio-treatment and disinfection processes.Overall, the performance of the WWTP was weak in terms of CDOM and FDOM removal, resulting in enrichment of CDOM and FDOM in effluent. Moreover, the total removal of the bulk DOM(P < 0.05) and the protein-like FDOM(P < 0.05) displayed a significant seasonal variation, with higher removal efficiencies in summer, whereas removal of CDOM and the humic-like FDOM showed little differences between summer and winter. In all,the results provide useful information for understanding the fate and transformation of DOM,illustrating that sub-fractions of DOM could be selectively removed depending on treatment processes and seasonality. | Xiaofang Yang Zhongbo Zhou Maddela Naga Raju Xiaoxuan Cai Fangang Meng | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,7: | 6
A rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric assay for duloxetine in human plasma:Its pharmacokinetic application显示文摘This paper describes a simple, rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assay for the determination of duloxetine in human plasma. A duloxetine stable labeled isotope (duloxetine d 5 ) was used as an internal standard. Analyte and the internal standard were extracted from 100 mL of human plasma via solid phase extraction technique using Oasis HLB cartridges. The chromatographic separation was achieved on a C 18 column by using a mixture of acetonitrile-5 mM ammonium acetate buffer (83:17, v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.9 mL/min. The calibration curve obtained was linear (r 2 Z0.99) over the concentration range of 0.05-101 ng/mL. Multiple-reaction monitoring mode (MRM) was used for quantification of ion transitions at m/z 298.3/154.1 and 303.3/159.1 for the drug and the internal standard, respectively. Method validation was performed as per FDA guidelines and the results met the acceptance criteria. A run time of 2.5 min for each sample made it possible to analyze more than 300 plasma samples per day. The proposed method was found to be applicable to clinical studies. | Ramakrishna Gajula Rambabu Maddela Vasu Babu Ravi Jaswanth Kumar Inamadugu Nageswara Rao Pilli | 2013 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2013,3,1: | 3
A Delay-Dependent Anti-Windup Compensator for Wide-Area Power Systems With Time-Varying Delays and Actuator Saturation显示文摘In this paper, a delay-dependent anti-windup compensator is designed for wide-area power systems to enhance the damping of inter-area low-frequency oscillations in the presence of time-varying delays and actuator saturation using an indirect approach. In this approach, first, a conventional wide-area damping controller is designed by using output feedback with regional pole placement approach without considering time-varying delays and actuator saturation. Then to mitigate the effect of both time-varying delays and actuator saturation, an add-on delay-dependent anti-windup compensator is designed. Based on generalized sector conditions, less conservative delay-dependent sufficient conditions are derived in the form of a linear matrix inequality(LMI) to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closedloop system in the presence of time-varying delays and actuator saturation by using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and Jensen integral inequality. Based on sufficient conditions, the LMI-based optimization problem is formulated and solved to obtain the compensator gain which maximizes the estimation of the region of attraction and minimizes the upper bound of-gain. Nonlinear simulations are performed first using MATLAB/Simulink on a two-area four-machine power system to evaluate the performance of the proposed controller for two operating conditions, e.g.,3-phase to ground fault and generator 1 terminal voltage variation. Then the proposed controller is implemented in real-time on an OPAL-RT digital simulator. From the results obtained it is verified that the proposed controller provides sufficient damping to the inter-area oscillations in the presence of time-varying delays and actuator saturation and maximizes the estimation of the region of attraction. | Maddela Chinna Obaiah Bidyadhar Subudhi | 2020 | IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2020,7,1: | 2

β-Glucan Improves Protective Qi Status in Adults with Protective Qi Deficiency——A Randomized,Placebo-Controlled,and Double-Blinded Trial显示文摘Objective:To test the hypothesis thatβ-glucan enhances protective qi(PQi),an important Chinese medicine(CM)concept which stipulates that a protective force circulates throughout the body surface and works as the first line of defense against'external pernicious influences'.Methods:A total of 138 participants with PQi deficiency(PQD)were randomized to receiveβ-glucan(200 mg daily)or placebo for 12 weeks.Participants’PQi status was assessed every 2 weeks via conventional diagnosis and a standardized protocol from which a PQD severity and risk score was derived.Indices of participants’immune and general health status were also monitored, including upper respiratory tract infection(URTI),saliva secretory Ig A(s Ig A),and self-reported measures of physical and mental health(PROMIS).Results:PQi status was not significantly different between theβ-glucan and placebo treatment groups at baseline but improved significantly in theβ-glucan(vs.placebo)group in a time-dependent manner. The intergroup differences[95%confidence interval(CI)]in severity score(scale:1-5),risk score(scale:0-1),and proportion of PQD participants(%)at finish line was 0.49(0.35-0.62),0.48(0.35-0.61),and 0.36(0.25-0.47),respectively.Additionally,β-glucan improved URTI symptom(scale:1-9)and PROMIS physical(scale:16.2-67.7)and mental(scale:21.2-67.6)scores by a magnitude(95%CI)of 1.0(0.21-1.86),5.7(2.33-9.07),and 3.0(-0.37-6.37),respectively,over placebo.Conclusions:β-Glucan ameliorates PQi in PQD individuals.By using stringent evidence-based methodologies, our study demonstrated that Western medicine-derived remedies, such asβ-glucan,can be employed to advance CM therapeutics.(Clinical Trial.Gov registry:NCT03782974) | WU Jun-rong CHENG Hao-jie SHI Jian-pin YIN Wei-dong WANG Jun OU Xuan-qiao CHEN Jin-li Ira Bernstein Mark Levy Rolando Maddela Robert Sinnott TIAN Jun-qiang | 2022 | Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2022,28,5: | 1

Occurrence and Roles of Comammox Bacteria in Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems:A Critical Review显示文摘Nitrogen removal is a critical process in water treatment plants(WIPs)and wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs).The recent discovery of a novel bacterial process, complete ammonia oxidation(comammox,CMX),has refuted a century-long perception of the two-step conversion of NH3to NO3-.Compared with canonical nitrifiers,CMX bacteria offer undeniable advantages, such as a high growth yield propensity and adaptability to nutrient-and growth-limiting conditions, which collectively draw attention to validate the aptness of CMX bacteria to wastewater treatment. As there has been no comprehensive review on the relevance of CMX bacteria for sustainable water and wastewater treatment, this review is intended to discuss the roles and applications of CMX in the removal of nitrogen and pollutants from water and wastewater. We took into account insights into the metabolic versatilities of CMX bacteria at the clade and subclade levels. We focused on the distribution of CMX bacteria in engineered systems, niche differentiation,co-occurrence and interactions with cano nical nitrifiers for a better understanding of CMX bacteria in terms of their ecophysiology.Conceptualized details on the reactor adaptability and stress response of CMX bacteria are provided. The potential of CMX bacteria to degrade micropollutants either directly or co-metabolically was evaluated, and these insights would be an indispensable advantage in opening the doors for wider applications of CMX bacteria in WWTPs.Finally,we summarized future directions of research that are imperative in improving the understanding of CMX biology. | Naga Raju Maddela Zhihao Gan Yabing Meng Fuqiang Fan Fangang Meng | 2022 | Engineering2022,,10: | 0
Evidence on antimicrobial activity of essential oils and herbal extracts against Yersinia enterocolitica - A review显示文摘Yersinia enterocolitica is a very common food-borne pathogen which causes gastrointestinal infections (yersiniosis) in humans and a wide array of animals (e.g.cattle,deer,pigs,and birds).Due to the increasing interest in innovative plant-based substances as common food preservatives, several essential oils and herbal extracts have been investigated deeply that resulted in the emergence of novel anti-Yersinia additives. We reviewed relevant work done by 53 researchers covering literature from the year 2002 to till date. Some species such as Origanum vulgare ,Rosmarinus officinalis ,Thymus vulgaris ,Ocimum basilicum have been extensively investigated and identified that 1,8-cineole,linalool and γ-terpinene as compounds found in the essential oils of these plants have anti-Yersinia activity active food packaging agents. In the same direction, some promising results have been mentioned about the herbal extracts of Murrya koenigii ,Tanacetum vulgare and Tanacetum balsamita, but further investigations are needed for their sustainable implications.According to hierarchical cluster analysis,we found that Lamiaceae and Lauracea as the most significant families with anti-Yersinia activity.Towards the end,we proposed new research trends in order to enhance a global knowledge about the use of natural products against Y.enterocolitica . | Andrea Durofil Naga Raju Maddela Reinier Abreu Naranjo Matteo Radice | 2022 | Food Bioscience2022,47,3: | 0
