1Umbilical hernia in patients with liver cirrhosis: A surgical challenge显示文摘Umbilical hernia occurs in 20% of the patients with liver cirrhosis complicated with ascites. Due to the enormous intraabdominal pressure secondary to the ascites, umbilical hernia in these patients has a tendency to enlarge rapidly and to complicate. The treatment of umbilical hernia in these patients is a surgical challenge. Ascites control is the mainstay to reduce hernia recurrence and postoperative complications, such as wound infection, evisceration, ascites drainage, and peritonitis. Intermittent paracentesis, temporary peritoneal dialysis catheter or transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt may be necessary to control ascites. Hernia repair is indicated in patients in whom medical treatment is effective in controlling ascites. Patients who have a good perspective to be transplanted within 3-6 mo, herniorrhaphy should be performed during transplantation. Hernia repair with mesh is associated with lower recurrence rate, but with higher surgical site infection when compared to hernia correction with conventional fascial suture. There is no consensus on the best abdominal wall layer in which the mesh should be placed: Onlay, sublay, or underlay. 2Deposition of litter and nutrients in leaves and twigs in different plant communities of northeastern Mexico显示文摘Studies on litterfall and decomposition provide estimations of decomposition rates of different ecosystems.This is key information to understanding ecosystem dynamics and changes in a scenario of global warming.The objective of this research was to assess litterfall production,the potential deposition of macro and micronutrients through leaf and twig fall as well as macronutrient—use efficiency in three forest ecosystems at different altitudes: a pine forest mixed with deciduous species(S1); a Quercus spp.forest(S2); and,a Tamaulipan thornscrub forest(S3).Total annual litterfall deposition was 594,742 and 533 g m^(-2) for S1,S2 and S3.Leaf litter was higher (68%) than twigs(18%),reproductive structures(8%) or miscellaneous material(6%).Micronutrient leaf deposition was higher for Fe followed by Mn,Zn and Cu.Macronutrient leaf deposition was higher for Ca followed by K,Mg and P.Even though P deposition in leaves and twigs was lower than other macronutrients,its nutrient use efficiency was higher than Ca,Mg or K.Altitude and species composition determine litter and nutrient deposition,with higher values at mid-altitudes(550 m).Altitude is an important factor to consider when analyzing litter production as well as nutrient deposition as shown in this study.Litter production and nutrient deposition are expected to change in a scenario of global warming.Humberto González-Rodríguez Roque Gonzalo Ramírez-Lozano Israel Cantú-Silva Marco Vinicio Gómez-Meza Eduardo Estrada-Castillón José Ramón Arévalo 2018Journal of Forestry Research2018,29,5:2
3Reporter gene systems for the identification and characterization of cancer stem cells显示文摘Cancer stem cells(CSCs)are tumor cells that share functional characteristics with normal and embryonic stem cells.CSCs have increased tumor-initiating capacity and metastatic potential and lower sensitivity to chemo-and radiotherapy,with important roles in tumor progression and the response to therapy.Thus,a current goal of cancer research is to eliminate CSCs,necessitating an adequate phenotypic and functional characterization of CSCs.Strategies have been developed to identify,enrich,and track CSCs,many of which distinguish CSCs by evaluating the expression of surface markers,the initiation of specific signaling pathways,and the activation of master transcription factors that control stemness in normal cells.We review and discuss the use of reporter gene systems for identifying CSCs.Reporters that are under the control of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1,CD133,Notch,Nanog homeobox,Sex-determining region Y-box 2,and POU class 5 homeobox can be used to identify CSCs in many tumor types,track cells in real time,and screen for drugs.Thus,reporter gene systems,in combination with in vitro and in vivo functional assays,can assess changes in the CSCs pool.We present relevant examples of these systems in the evaluation of experimental CSCs-targeting therapeutics,demonstrating their value in CSCs research.NohemíSalinas-Jazmín Arely Rosas-Cruz Marco Velasco-Velázquez 2021World Journal of Stem Cells2021,13,7:2
