5Development of a health education intervention strategy using an implementation research method to control taeniasis and cysticercosis in Burkina Faso显示文摘Background:Taeniasis and cysticercosis are two diseases caused by Taenia solium,a parasite transmitted between humans and pigs, leading to considerable economic loss and disabilities.Transmission of the parasite is linked to environmental and behavioural factors such as inadequate sanitation and hygiene, poor pig management, and consumption of infected pork. This study used implementation research method to design a health education intervention strategy for reducing T.solium infections in Burkina Faso,a country endemic for the parasite. Methods:Eighteen group discussions were conducted with 8-18 participants each in three villages. In addition, structured interviews were conducted among 4777 participants and 2244 pig owners, who were selected through cluster random sampling in 60 villages of three provinces of Burkina Faso. Both approaches assessed knowledge and practices related to T.solium.The information obtained was used to develop a community-adapted health education intervention strategy to control taeniasis and cysticercosis in Burkina Faso. Results:The group discussions revealed that participants had a poor quality of life due to the diseases as well as inadequate access to latrines, safe water, and healthcare services. In addition,it was found that pig production was an important economic activity, especially for women.Furthermore, financial and knowledge constraints were important limitations to improved pig management and latrine construction. The survey data also showed that open defecation and drinking unboiled water were common behaviours, enhanced by a lack of knowledge regarding the transmission of the parasite, perceived financial barriers to the implementation of control measures, lack of public sensitization,as well as a lack of self-efficacy towards control of the parasite.Nevertheless, the perceived financial benefits of controlling porcine cysticercosis could be emphasized by an education program that discourages open defecation and encourages drinking safe water. The final intervention strategy included a Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation(PHAST)approach,as well as a 52-min film and an accompanying comic booklet. Conclusions:The main problem in the study communities regarding the transmission of T.solium cysticercosis is the random disposal of human faeces, which can be contaminated with parasite eggs.Prevention of open defecation requires the building of latrines, which can be quite problematic in economically challenged settings.Providing the community with the skills to construct durable latrines using low-cost locally available materials would likely help to resolve this problem.Further studies are required to implement and evaluate the T.solium control strategy developed in this study.Helena Ngowi Ivan Ozbolt Athanase Millogo Veronique Dermauw Telesphore Some Paul Spicer Lori L.Jervis Rasmane Ganaba Sarah Gabriel Pierre Dorny Helene Carabin 2017Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1:1

10Knowledge,attitudes and practices concerning epilepsy among nurses and midwives working in primary health care settings in Ouagadougou of Burkina Faso显示文摘Background In developing countries, there is a lack of epilepsy knowledge among health workers. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice concerning epilepsy among nurses and midwives working in primary health care settings in Ouagadougou. Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study in the health districts of Ouagadougou from August 1st to September 15th,2017.All nurses and midwives working in three health districts were included in this study. Results A total of 213 participants with a mean age of 39.5 years were included in the survey;79.81%of them had a general certification in secondary education and 62%had a professional experience of more than 10 years.About 99%of the participants had not received training on epilepsy-related care during the last six months. In addition,74.5%of the participants had a good knowledge on epilepsy and 65%had a good practice toward epilepsy. The level of knowledge was associated with the workplace, years of training, and the professional experience. The level of knowledge about epilepsy was also associated with the level of education, while there was a significant link between professional status and nurses’level of practice in the management of seizures. Conclusions Efforts must be made to provide continuing education for nurses in order to improve their knowledge on epilepsy.Alfred Anselme Dabilgou Alassane Dravé Julie Marie Adeline Wendlamita Kyelem Fatimata Kinda Christian Napon Athanase Millogo Jean Kaboré 2023Acta Epileptologica2023,6,2:0
11Knowledge and attitudes of driver license applicants and instructors about driving of patients with epilepsy in Burkina Faso显示文摘Background:Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease in the world. The objective of the study was to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of driver's license applicants and instructors in driving schools on epilepsy in Burkina Faso.Method:This cross-sectional study was carried out from January 7th to March 7th 2020 in 21 driving schools approved by the National Driver License Authority in the city of Ouagadougou.Fifteen driver applicants and one instructor were selected in each driving school, resulting in a total of 315 driver applicants and 21 instructors in the study. Results:The mean age of participants was 29.91±7.63 years. One of the driver applicants included in the study was once experienced a seizure attack. All respondents had heard of epilepsy. The main source of epilepsy information was from family(42.5%).Two hundred and twenty-six respondents(673%)had witnessed an epileptic seizure.A majority of participants(55.9%)believed that persons with epilepsy be not permitted to drive a motor vehicle.About 44.0% of participants thought that people with epilepsy should be permitted to drive under certain conditions. One hundred and four(30.9%)participants suggested that people with epilepsy be permitted to drive a light vehicle. One hundred and forty-one(42.0%)suggest to withdraw the driving license for lifetime if a driver had an epileptic seizure attack;while twenty-three(6.8%)participants recommended suspension of driver license for 12 months. Conclusion:Efforts should be made to improve awareness and education among license applicants and instructors on the driving by people with epilepsy.Dabilgou Alfred Anselme Drave Alassane Kyelem Julie Marie Adeline Eklou Lorrainda Emerance Napon Christian Millogo Athanase Karfo Kapouni Kabore Jean 2022Acta Epileptologica2022,5,1:0
