| 1 | Southeastern extension of the Red River fault zone (RRFZ) and its tectonic evolution significance in western South China Sea显示文摘Recent geophysical surveys and basin modeling suggest that the No.1 fault in the Ying- gehai basin (YGHB) is the seaward elongation of the Red River fault zone (RRFZ) in the South China Sea (SCS). The RRFZ, which separates the South China and Indochina block, extends first along the Yuedong fault, offshore of Vietnam, and then continues southward and breaks off into two branches: the Lupar fault and the Tinjia fault. The southern extension of the Lupar fault dies out beneath the NW Borneo while the Tinjia fault extends southeast and reaches the Brunei-Sabah area. According to the gravity and geomagnetic data, and the tectonic evolution of the basins, there are different evolution histories between the Wan’an basin (WAB) and the basins in the Nansha block. The Tinjia fault may be the boundary between the Balingian block and the Nansha block. Hence, the line linking the Yue- dong fault and the Tinjia fault, which both are continental margin faults and strike-slip ones in the geological evolution histories, constitute the boundary between the Indochina and Nansha block. The Lupar fault, in contrast, is an intraplate fault within the Indochina block. | 3 | MicroRNA: A matter of life or death显示文摘Progressive cell loss due to apoptosis is a pathological hallmark implicated in a wide spectrum of degenerative diseases such as heart disease, atherosclerotic arteries and hypertensive vessels, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Tremendous efforts have been made to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways involved in apoptosistic cell death. Once ignored completely or overlooked as cellular detritus, microRNAs (miRNAs) that were discovered only a decade ago, have recently taken many by surprise. The importance of miRNAs has steadily gained appreciation and miRNA biology has exploded into a massive swell of interest with enormous range and potential in almost every biological discipline because of their widespread expression and diverse functions in both animals and humans. It has been established that miRNAs are critical regulators of apoptosis of various cell types. These small molecules act by repressing the expression of either the proapoptotic or antiapoptotic genes to produce antiapoptotic or proapoptotic effects. Appealing evidence has been accumulating for the involvement of miRNAs in human diseases associated with apoptotic cell death and the potential of miRNAs as novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of the diseases. This editorial aims to convey this message and to boost up the research interest by providing a timely, comprehensive overview on regulation of apoptosis bymiRNAs and a synopsis on the pathophysiologic implications of this novel regulatory network based on the currently available data in the literature. It begins with a brief introduction to apoptosis and miRNAs, followed by the description of the fundamental aspects of miRNA biogenesis and action, and the role of miRNAs in regulating apoptosis of cancer cells and cardiovascular cells. Speculations on the development of miRNAs as potential therapeutic targets are also presented. | 4 | On deposits controlled by tectonic lenses显示文摘By study of the typical tectonic lenses controlling some ore deposits, the tectonic lens boundaries may be classified into fuzzy boundaries, sharp boundaries and complex boundaries, and the metallostructures in tectonic lenses may be classified into vein-type, stock- work-type and breccia-type. After studying their metallostructures, we suggest the conception on tectonic lenses as an ore-forming system, realizing that the compact-function ore-forming system is made up of the lenticular weak-strain domain(Q) and its outside linear strong-strain belt(P). The ore-forming system, which is composed of four subsystems that coupled with each other and exert their system functions to the full, includes the dual-dynamical system made up of tectonic and fluid dynamics, the metallotectonic system controlled by hydrofracturing, the ore-source system made up of multi-substances and the mineral transportation system contacted by tectonic network. Deformational partitioning, hydrofracturing and tectonic pumping operate the consid- erable function while the system function practises. | 6 | The evolution and morphological stability of a spherical crystal显示文摘The growth model of a spherical crystal in the undercooled melt including the sur- face energy, interfacial kinetics and convective flow is established. The effect of the convective flow induced by a small far field flow on the evolution and morphologi- cal stability of the interface of the spherical crystal is studied. The interface shape of the spherical crystal, which is affected by the far field flow, and the dispersion relation of the growth rate of amplitude of the perturbed interface are derived. It is shown that the convection induced by the far field flow makes the interface of the growing spherical crystal further grow in the upstream direction of the far field flow and inhibit growth in the downstream direction; the interface of the decaying spherical crystal further decays in the upstream direction and inhibits decay in the downstream direction. The theoretical result suggests that both the growth of the sphere in the upstream direction and the decay of the sphere in the downstream direction make the spherical crystal tend to evolve into an oval; the morphological stability of the interface depends on a certain radius Rc such that the spherical crystal is unstable when its radius is greater than Rc and stable when its radius is less than Rc. The surface energy and interfacial kinetics have strong stabilizing effects on the growth of the spherical crystal. | 7 | GENERALIZED FLOW LAWS OF POLYPHASE ROCKS: AN OVERVIEW显示文摘Rheological properties of polyphase rocks play an important role in the dynamics of the lithosphere and asthenosphere. However, such fundamental issues have not been well resolved. A theoretical analysis has been made to develop expressions for the flow laws of polyphase rocks in terms of the volume fractions and flow laws of their constituent phases. The flow strengths predicted by the proposed model for common crustal and upper mantle rocks such as granite, diorite, diabase and lherzolite, and for synthetic two phase composites such as forsterite enstatite and water ice ammonia dehydrate aggregates are in good agreement with previously determined experimental values. | 15 | Study on the alkylation reaction of guanine and N-acetylguanine and the synthesis of 1'-C alkylated carba-DHPG analogues显示文摘The alkylation reaction of guanine and N-acetylguanine with model compounds such as isopropyl bromide or 4-heptyl tosylate were studied. The reaction conditions such as temperature, solvent, base, and catalyst were examined for their effects on the reaction rate, and the yield and regioselectivity of the coupling reaction. The highest yield was obtained by using DMSO as the solvent. The reaction proceeded in a homogenous manner to give higher yield of 9-N and 7-N substituted product in a mole ratio of 1:1. The ratio could be raised to 2:1 if dibenzo-18-crown-6 was used as a catalyst. | 19 | HYDRODYNAMIC MODELLING OF ESTUARINE CIRCULATION USING A SPLINE METHOD OF FRACTIONAL STEPS显示文摘A two-dimensional laterally integrated numerical model has been developed to represent the velocity and salinity distribution in a stratified estuary. The soverning equations expressing the conservation of mass, momentum, and ablt or heat content are solved by a spline method of frachonal steps in combination with the usual finite-difference method. Details of the computational scheme have been included in the present report. The model has been applied to the estuary of ha Riviere Petite beleine (Little Whale River) in the James Bay region of northern canada. Results from the simulation have been compared with salinity and velocity data taken in the field, as well as with the SADI (Spline Alternating Direction Implicit) Procedure.
