| 1 | Treatment of large lumbar disc herniation with percutaneous ozone injection via the posterior-lateral route and inner margin of the facet joint显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the effects of percutaneous ozone injection via the posterior-lateral route and inner margin of the facet joint in the treatment of large lumbar disc herniation.METHODS:Fifty-eight patients with large lumbar disc herniation were treated with percutaneous injection of ozone via the posterior-lateral route and inner margin of the facet joint under digital subtraction angiography.Second injections were performed 5 d after the initial injection.All patients were followed up for 6-18 mo.A modified Macnab method was used for assessing clinical outcomes after oxygen-ozone therapy.RESULTS:Successful puncture was obtained in all patients.The overall efficacy was 91.4;the outcome was the excellent in 37 cases(63.8),good in 16 cases(27.6) and fair/poor in 5 cases(8.6) according to the Macnab criteria.No severe complications were found throughout this study.CONCLUSION:Percutaneous intradiscal ozone injection via the posterior-lateral route and inner margin of the facet joint is effective and safe for treatment of large lumbar disc herniation. | Wei Lu,Yan-Hao Li,Xiao-Feng He,Department of Interventional Radiology,Nanfang Hospital,Southern Medical University,Guangzhou 510515,Guangdong Province,China | 2010 | World Journal of Radiology2010,2,3: | 31 |
| 2 | Dielectric metasurfaces for complete and independent control of the optical amplitude and phase显示文摘Metasurfaces are optically thin metamaterials that promise complete control of the wavefront of light but are primarily used to control only the phase of light.Here,we present an approach,simple in concept and in practice,that uses meta-atoms with a varying degree of form birefringence and rotation angles to create high-efficiency dielectric metasurfaces that control both the optical amplitude and phase at one or two frequencies.This opens up applications in computer-generated holography,allowing faithful reproduction of both the phase and amplitude of a target holographic scene without the iterative algorithms required in phase-only holography.We demonstrate all-dielectric metasurface holograms with independent and complete control of the amplitude and phase at up to two optical frequencies simultaneously to generate two-and three-dimensional holographic objects.We show that phaseamplitude metasurfaces enable a few features not attainable in phase-only holography;these include creating artifactfree two-dimensional holographic images,encoding phase and amplitude profiles separately at the object plane,encoding intensity profiles at the metasurface and object planes separately,and controlling the surface textures of three-dimensional holographic objects. | Adam C.Overvig Sajan Shrestha Stephanie C.Malek Ming Lu Aaron Stein Changxi Zheng Nanfang Yu | 2019 | Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1: | 27 |
| 3 | Efficacy of intramuscular matrine in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B显示文摘BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, a glo- bal public health problem, is the leading cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. There are more than 350 million HBV carriers in the world and up to one million die annually due to hepatitis B associated liv- er disease. So far no optimal treatment is available for pa- tients with chronic hepatitis B. In the paper we investigated the efficacy of intramuscular matrine in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients with chronic hepatitis B were randomly divided into matrine treatment group (n =60) and control group (n =60). The patients of the matrine group were given intramuscularly with matrine (an alkaloid extracted from a traditional Chinese herb Radix Sophorae Flavescentis by Guangzhou Ming Xing Pharmaceu cal Factory, Guangzhou, China) of 100 mg daily for 90 days in addition to conventional liver-protective drugs in- cluding glucurone, inosine, compound vitamin B and caryophyllin. The control group received conventional liv- er-protective drugs alone. Clinical manifestations and labo- ratory parameters including liver biochemistry and serum hepatitis B virus markers were monitored before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: Significant differences were seen between the two groups in terms of improvement of clinical symptoms and signs, recovery of liver functions, and serum conver- sion from hepatitis Be antigen to HBe antibody and from positive to negative serum HBV DNA (P <0.05-0.01). The result of the matrine group was more marked than that of the control group. Serious side-effects were not observed except mild pain at the site of injection of matrine in a few patients. | 6 | Broadband achromatic dielectric metalenses显示文摘Metasurfaces offer a unique platform to precisely control optical wavefronts and enable the realization of flat lenses,or metalenses,which have the potential to substantially reduce the size and complexity of imaging systems and to realize new imaging modalities.However,it is a major challenge to create achromatic metalenses that produce a single focal length over a broad wavelength range because of the difficulty in simultaneously engineering phase profiles at distinct wavelengths on a single metasurface.For practical applications,there is a further challenge to create broadband achromatic metalenses that work in the transmission mode for incident light waves with any arbitrary polarization state.We developed a design methodology and created libraries of meta-units—building blocks of metasurfaces—with complex cross-sectional geometries to provide diverse phase dispersions(phase as a function of wavelength),which is crucial for creating broadband achromatic metalenses.We elucidated the fundamental limitations of achromatic metalens performance by deriving mathematical equations that govern the tradeoffs between phase dispersion and achievable lens parameters,including the lens diameter,numerical aperture(NA),and bandwidth of achromatic operation.We experimentally demonstrated several dielectric achromatic metalenses reaching the fundamental limitations.These metalenses work in the transmission mode with polarization-independent focusing efficiencies up to 50%and continuously provide a near-constant focal length over λ=1200–1650 nm.These unprecedented properties represent a major advance compared to the state of the art and a major step toward practical implementations of metalenses. | Sajan Shrestha Adam C.Overvig Ming Lu Aaron Stein Nanfang Yu | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 13 |

| 8 | Contribution of elF-4E inhibition to the expression and activity of heparanase in human colon adenocarcinoma cell line:LS-174T显示文摘AIM: Heparanase degrades heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) and is a critical mediator of tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. Recently, it has been cloned as a single gene family and found to be a potential target for antimetastasis drugs. However, the molecular basis for the regulation of heparanase expression is still not quite clear. The aim of this study was to determine whether the expression of eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF-4E) correlated with the heparanase level in tumor cells and to explore the correlation between heparanase expression and metastatic potential of LS- 174T cells.METHODS: A 20-met antisense s-oligodeoxynucleotide (asODN) targeted against the translation start site of eIF-4E mRNA was introduced into LS-174T cells by lipid-mediated DNA-transfection. eIF-4E protein and mRNA levels were detected by Western blot analysis and RT-PCR, respectively.Heparanase activity was defined as the ability to degrade high molecular weight (40-100 kDa) radiolabeled HS (heparan sulfate) substrate into low molecular weight (5-15 kDa) HS fragments that could be differentiated by gel filtration chromatography. The invasive potential of tumor cell in vitro was observed by using a Matrigel invasion assay system.RESULTS: The 20-mer asODN against eIF-4E specifically and significantly inhibited eIF-4E expression at both transcriptional and translational levels. As a result, the expression and activity of heparanase were effectively retarded and the decreased activity of heparanase resulted in the decreased invasive potential of LS-174T.CONCLUSION: eIF-4E is involved in the regulation of heparanase production in colon adenocarcinoma cell line LS-174T, and its critical function makes it a particularly interesting target for heparanase regulation. | 9 | Construction and selection of the natural immune Fab antibody phage display library from patients with colorectal cancer显示文摘AIM: To construct the natural immune Fab antibody phage display libraries of colorectal cancer and to select antibodies related with colorectal cancer.METHODS: Extract total RNA from tissue of local cancer metastasis lymph nodes of patients with colorectal cancer.RT-PCR was used to amplify the heavy chain Fd and light chain к and the amplification products were inserted successively into the vector pComb3 to construct the human libraries of Fab antibodies. They were then panned by phage display technology. By means of Dot immunoblotting and ELISA, the libraries were identified and the Fab phage antibodies binding with antigens of colorectal cancer were selected.RESULTS: The amplified fragments of Fd and к gained by RT-PCR were about 650bp. Fd and к PCR products were subsequently inserted into the vector pComb3, resulting in a recombination rate of 40% and the volume of Fab phage display library reached 1.48 x 106. The libraries were enriched about 120-fold by 3 cycles of adsorption-elution- multiplication (panning). Dot immunoblotting showed Fab expressions on the phage libraries and ELISA showed 5clones of Fab phage antibodies which had binding activities with antigens of colorectal cancer.CONCLUSION: The natural immune Fab antibody phage display libraries of colorectal cancer were constructed. | 10 | Percutaneous transhepatic metal versus plastic biliary stent in treating malignant biliary obstruction: a multiple center investigation显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of metal versus plastic biliary stent implantation in the treatmentof malignant biliary obstruction.METHODS: Percutaneous transhepatic self-expandable metal stent (MS, n=61) and 10F plastic stent(PS, n=34) were placed in 95 patients with malignant biliary obstruction in three hospitals of Guangdongprovince. All patients were followed up until death or at least one year after the procedure. Kaplan-Meieranalysis was used to compare the survival of the patients and the rates of stent patency.RESULTS: The 30-day mortality rate was lower in the MS group (6/61, 9.8%) than in the PS group(9/34, 26.5%, P<0.05). The 30-day reobstruction rate and the complication rate were 15.0%, 16.4%in the MS group and 32. 4%, 29. 4% in the PS group, respectively (P<0. 01). | 12 | Nanostructured fibers as a versatile photonic platform: radiative cooling and waveguiding through transverse Anderson localization显示文摘Broadband high reflectance in nature is often the result of randomly,three-dimensionally structured materials.This study explores unique optical properties associated with one-dimensional nanostructures discovered in silk cocoon fibers of the comet moth,Argema mittrei.The fibers are populated with a high density of air voids randomly distributed across the fiber cross-section but are invariant along the fiber.These filamentary air voids strongly scatter light in the solar spectrum.A single silk fiber measuring~50μm thick can reflect 66%of incoming solar radiation,and this,together with the fibers’high emissivity of 0.88 in the mid-infrared range,allows the cocoon to act as an efficient radiative-cooling device.Drawing inspiration from these natural radiative-cooling fibers,biomimetic nanostructured fibers based on both regenerated silk fibroin and polyvinylidene difluoride are fabricated through wet spinning.Optical characterization shows that these fibers exhibit exceptional optical properties for radiative-cooling applications:nanostructured regenerated silk fibers provide a solar reflectivity of 0.73 and a thermal emissivity of 0.90,and nanostructured polyvinylidene difluoride fibers provide a solar reflectivity of 0.93 and a thermal emissivity of 0.91.The filamentary air voids lead to highly directional scattering,giving the fibers a highly reflective sheen,but more interestingly,they enable guided optical modes to propagate along the fibers through transverse Anderson localization.This discovery opens up the possibility of using wild silkmoth fibers as a biocompatible and bioresorbable material for optical signal and image transport. | Norman Nan Shi Cheng-Chia Tsai Michael J.Carter Jyotirmoy Mandal Adam C.Overvig Matthew Y.Sfeir Ming Lu Catherine L.Craig Gary D.Bernard Yuan Yang Nanfang Yu | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 5 |
| 13 | HBsAg loading on dendritic cells in patients with chronic hepatitis B: expressions of phenotypic molecules显示文摘BACKGROUND: The antigen reducing ability of dentritic cells (DCs), a kind of antigen presenting cells (APCs) initiating immune response, is associated with the specific immune tolerance of chronic hepatitis B(CHB) patients. However, the dysfunction of DCs can be possibly reversed by the stimulation of antigen peptides. In this study, DCs were cultured from peripheral blood monocytes (PBMCs) in patients with CHB in vitro, and the expression of phenotypic molecules on DCs loaded by different concentrations of HBsAg was observed. METHODS: Forty patients with CHB were divided randomly into 4 groups(10 patients in each group). PBMCs were isolated, and DCs were cultured after addition of granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GMCSF) and interleukin 4(IL-4). On the 9th day, DCs of the experimental groups were loaded at HBsAg concentrations of 2.5mg/L, 5mg/L and 10mg/L for 24 hours, whereas those of the control group were not loaded. An electron microscope was used to analyze the morphological changes of the DCs. The expression of phenotypic molecules on DCs in different groups was detected with flow cytometry. RESULTS: A combination of GM-CSF and IL-4 produced DCs from PBMCs in patients with CHB after being cultured for 9 days, whose morphological changes were tested by an electron microscope. The expression of phenotypic molecules on DCs in the control group was as low as CD83 (8.02±3.99)%, CD80(8.77±2.06)%, and MHC-DR (14.05±2.66)%. Loaded by different concentrations of HBsAg, the up-regulation of phenotypic molecules on DCs was found, with CD83(18.35±2.93)%, CD80(42.63±7.15)% and MHC-DR(47.49±6.59)% in 2.5mg/L HBsAg loading group, CD83(17.88±3.12)%, CD80(45.24± 10.93)% and MHC-DR(47.07±8.52)% in 5mg/L HBsAg loading group and CD83(16.74±2.86)%, CD80(44.59±6.99)% and MHC-DR(48.59±7.42)% in 10mg/L HBsAg loading group, respectively. Compared with the control group, the phenotypic molecules in the experimental groups were all different significantly (P<0.01), but among them, there were no differences (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: DCs cultured from PBMCs in the patients with CHB under the conditions of GM-CSF and IL-4 present on the typical dendritic morphology but are immature for expressing low phenotypic molecules. | 15 | Diagnosis and treatment of pancreatolithiasis: report of 16 cases显示文摘BACKGROUND: Pancreatolithiasis is rarely recognized clinically. This study was undertaken to assess the value of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of 16 patients with pancrea- tolithiasis and its treatment with pancreatolithotomy plus side-to-side pancreaticojejunostomy. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was also used in some patients. METHODS: In the 16 patients with pancreatolithiasis trea- ted at our hospital from 1977 to June 2002, 3 patients were complicated by pancreatic cancer, 2 pancreatic head cyst, and 1 choledochal cyst. Ten patients underwent operation, 3 received endoscopic sphincterotomy ( EST), and 3 re- fused operation and left the hospital. RESULTS; Epigastric pain was the major symptom of the disease. Ultrasonography was the best choice for the diag- nosis of the disease in addition to CT for determining chara- cteristics and location of pancreatolithiasis associated with pancreatic cancer, ERCP for showing pancreatic stone, and EST for detecting stone in the pancreatic head. Pancrea- tolithotomy plus side-to-side pancreaticojejunostomy was used for the treatment of pancreatolithiasis. CONCLUSIONS; Ultrasonography is the first choice for the diagnosis of pancreatolithiasis. Pancreatolithotomy plus side-to-side pancreaticojejunostomy is the best choice for the treatment of pancreatolithiasis. CT is of great value in determining characteristics and locations of pancreatolithia- sis associated with pancreatic cancer. | 16 | Systemic Vasculitis:An Important and Underestimated Cause of Malignant Hypertension显示文摘Objectives:Malignant hypertension(MHT)is defi ned as severe hypertension accompanied by ischemic failure of one or more organs.The aims of this study were to evaluate the current clinical and etiologic profi les of MHT.Methods:As a retrospective study,we selected all patients admitted to our center from January 2013 to December 2016.Seventy patients with MHT were included.Results:The average age of the patients was 40 years,and more than half of the patients were male(78.57%).There were 24 patients with essential hypertension,accounting for 34.29%of the patients,and 46 with secondary hypertension,accounting for 65.71%of the patients.For secondary MHT,systemic vasculitis(25.57%)was the most common cause,followed by severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(15.71%),primary renal parenchymal hypertension(11.43%),primary aldosteronism(7.14%),and Cushing syndrome(1.43%)and nutcracker phenomenon(1.43%).Twenty patients with systemic vasculitis were characterized by severe hypertension accompanied by damage to two or more target organs of differing severity.The levels of white blood cells,hypersensitive C-reactive protein,serum creatinine,and 24-hour urinary protein were above their normal range.Conclusion:Systemic vasculitis may be one of the main causes of MHT,and has been underestimated in the past.In future clinical work,clinicians need to pay more attention to patients with systemic vasculitis. | Qing Zhu Shasha Liu Mulalibieke Heizhati Xiaoguang Yao Menghui Wang Qin Luo Lei Wang Delian Zhang Guijuan Chang Nanfang Li | 2019 | Cardiovascular Innovations and Applications2019,,B07: | 2 |
| 17 | G and D cells in rat antral mucosa: An immunoelectron microscopic study显示文摘AIM: To investigate the gastrin secreting cells (G cells) and the somatostatin secreting cells (D cells) of antral mucosa in rats at the ultrastructural level.METHODS: Revised immunoelectron microscopic technique was used to detect the G cells and D cells in rat antral mucosa through gastrin and somatostatin antibodies labeled by colloidal gold. Also the relevant quantitative analysis regarding the granular number of colloidal gold in G cells and in D cells was conducted.RESULTS: Immunological granules of colloidal gold were distributed in G cells and D cells. Gastrin labeled golden granules or somatostatin labeled ones presented mainly as lobation-like or island-like congeries. Most of the golden congeries were observed dissociated in cytoplasms of G cells or D cells, near the basement membrane. A few golden congeries were located in nuclei. The number of golden granules in one G cell was around 107.04±19.68 and was 83.36±17.58 in one D cell.CONCLUSION: Gastrin secreting granules are located in cytoplasms and nuclei of G cells, and somatostatin secreting granules both in cytoplasms and in nuclei of D cells.
