7Fish assemblages in protected seagrass habitats:Assessing fish abundance and diversity in no-take marine reserves and fished areas显示文摘Marine reserves are an important management tool for conserving local biodiversity and protecting fragile ecosystems such as seagrass that provide significant ecological functions and services to people and the marine environment.With humans placing ever-growing pressure on seagrass habitats,marine reserves also provide an important reference from which changes to seagrass and their ecological assemblages may be assessed.After eight years of protection of seagrass beds(Posidonia australis)in no-take marine reserves(Sanctuary Zones)within the Jervis Bay Marine Park(New South Wales,Australia;zoned in 2002),we aimed to assess what changes may have occurred and assess continuing change through time in fish assemblages within these seagrass meadows.Using baited remote underwater videos(BRUVs),we sampled seagrass fish assemblages at three locations in no-take zones and five locations in fished zones three times from 2010 to 2013.Overall,we observed a total of 2615 individuals from 40 fish species drawn from 24 families.We detected no differences in total fish abundance,diversity,or assemblage composition between management zones,although we observed a significant increase in Haletta semifasciata,a locally targeted fish species,in no-take marine reserves compared with fished areas.Fish assemblages in seagrass varied greatly amongst times and locations.Several species varied in relative abundance greatly over months and years,whilst others had consistently greater relative abundances at specific locations.We discuss the potential utility of marine reserves covering seagrass habitats and the value of baseline data from which future changes to seagrass fish populations may be measured.Rhiannon S.Kiggins Nathan A.Knott Tristan New Andrew R.Davis 2020Aquaculture and Fisheries2020,5,5:1
8Revisit of advection-dispersion equation model with velocity-dependent dispersion in capturing tracer dynamics in single empty fractures显示文摘An accurate quantification of the contaminant transport through fractured media is critical for dealing with water-quality related scientific and engineering issues, where the dispersion coefficient is an important and elusive parameter for the solute transport modeling. Many previous studies show that the dispersion coefficient(D) in the standard advection-dispersion equation(ADE) model can be approximated by D=av~λ(where a is the dispersivity), a formula to be revisited systematically in this study by laboratory experiments and model analysis. First, a series of tracer transport experiments in single empty fractures are conducted in cases of different hydraulic gradients. Second, the tracer breakthrough curves are determined by simulations based on the ADE model, to obtain the dispersion coefficients corresponding to various fracture roughnesses and flow velocities. A varying trend of λ is analyzed under different flow conditions. Results show that although the standard ADE model cannot be used to characterize the late-time tailing of the tracer BTCs, likely due to the solute retention, this simple model can simulate most of the solute mass dynamics moving through fractures and may therefore provide information for estimating the dispersion in parsimonious models appropriate for the non-Fickian transport. 14Retransplantation for graft failure in chronic hepatitis C infection: A good use of a scarce resource?显示文摘AIM: To investigate the outcome of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection undergoing liver retransplantation. METHODS: Using the UK National Registry, patients undergoing liver transplantation for HCV-related liver disease were identified. Data on patient and graft characteristics, as well as transplant and graft survival were collected to determine the outcome of HCV patients undergoing retransplantation and in order to identify factors associated with transplant survival. RESULTS: Between March 1994 and December 2007, 944 adult patients were transplanted for HCV-related liver disease. At the end of follow-up, 617 of these patients were alive. In total, 194 (21%) patients had first graft failure and of these, 80 underwent liver retransplantation, including 34 patients where the first graft failed due to recurrent disease. For those transplanted for HCV-related disease, the 5-year graft survival in those retransplanted for recurrent HCV was 45% [95% confidence interval (CI): 24%-64%] compared with 80% (95% CI: 62%-90%) for those retransplanted for other indications (P = 0.01, log-rank test); the 5-year transplant survival after retransplantation was 43% (95% CI: 23%-62%) and 46% (95% CI: 31%-60%), respectively (P = 0.8, log-rank test). In univariate analysis of all patients retransplanted, no factor analyzed was significantly associated with transplant survival. CONCLUSION: Outcomes for retransplantation in patients with HCV infection approach agreed criteria for minimum transplant benefit.
