| 2 | Reproducible large-scale synthesis of surface silanized nanoparticles as an enabling nanoproteomics platform: Enrichment of the human heart phosphoproteome显示文摘A reproducible synthetic strategy was developed for facile large-scale (200 mg) synthesis of surface silanized magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) for biological applications.After further coupling a phosphate-specific affinity ligand,these functionalized magnetic NPs were used for the highly specific enrichment of phosphoproteins from a complex biological mixture.Moreover,correlating the surface silane density of the silanized magnetite NPs to their resultant enrichment performance established a simple and reliable quality assurance control to ensure reproducible synthesis of these NPs routinely in large scale and optimal phosphoprotein enrichment performance from batch-to-batch.Furthermore,by successful exploitation of a top-down phosphoproteomics strategy that integrates this high throughput nanoproteomics platform with online liquid chromatography (LC) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS),we were able to specifically enrich,identify,and characterize endogenous phosphoproteins from highly complex human cardiac tissue homogenate.This nanoproteomics platform possesses a unique combination of scalability,specificity,reproducibility,and efficiency for the capture and enrichment of low abundance proteins in general,thereby enabling downstream proteomics applications. | David S.Roberts Bifan Chen Timothy N.Tiambeng Zhijie Wu Ying Ge Song Jin | 2019 | Nano Research2019,12,6: | 1 |

| 4 | The Challenges of Multidisciplinary Education in Computer Science显示文摘Some of the most important problems facing the United States and China,indeed facing our entire planet,require approaches that are fundamentally multidisciplinary in nature.Many of those require skills in computer science (CS),basic understanding of another discipline,and the ability to apply the skills in one discipline to the problems of another.Modern training in computer science needs to prepare students to work in other disciplines or to work on multidisciplinary problems.What do we do to prepare them for a multidisciplinary world when there are already too many things we want to teach them about computer science? | 7 | Mathematical modeling of microwave-assisted convective heating and drying of grapes显示文摘This research studied the processing performance and product quality of Thompson seedless grapes dried using microwave-assisted convective hot air drying as well as the effect of blanching and dipping pretreatments.Two pretreatment methods were compared,dipping into 2%ethyl oleate(V/V)and 5%potassium carbonate solution(m/V)at 40℃for 3 minutes and steam blanching at 90℃for 140 s,to accelerate drying rate and inactivate PPO aiming to improve drying rate and product color.Pretreated grapes were dried in a microwave-assisted convective dryer at 0.25 W/g specific power and 60℃air temperature.In this study dielectric and physical properties of grapes were calculated using descriptive equations for fruits and vegetables.Semi-theoretical models were used to describe the drying curves of both pretreated and untreated grapes.Center and near surface temperature profile of grapes was obtained using fiber optic probes.Experimental center temperature was modeled using one dimensional heat equation and was simulated using Partial Differential Equation toolbox of Matlab.The results showed that the maximum difference between experimental and predicted values were 4℃which occurred at the initial heating up period.It has been observed that dipping into solution had no effect on drying rate whereas steam blanching significantly reduced the drying time and produced product with desirable color. | Gokhan Bingol Zhongli Pan John S.Roberts Y.Onur Devres Murat O.Balaban | 2008 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2008,1,2: | 0 |
| 8 | Identifying female phenotypes that promote behavioral isolation in a sexually dimorphic species of fish Etheostoma zonale显示文摘In sexually dimorphic species characterized by exaggerated male ornamentation,behavioral isola-tion is often attributed to female preferences for conspecific male signals.Yet,in a number of sexu-ally dimorphic species,male mate choice also results in behavioral isolation.In many of these cases,the female traits that mediate species boundaries are unclear.Females in sexually dimorphic species typically lack many of the elaborate traits that are present in males and that are often used for taxonomic classification of species.In a diverse and largely sexually dimorphic group of fishes called darters(Percidae:Etheostoma),male mate choice contributes to behavioral isolation be-tween a number of species;however,studies addressing which female traits males prefer are lack-ing.In this study,we identified the dominant female pattern for two sympatric species,Etheostoma zonale and Etheostoma barrenense,using pattern energy analysis,and we used discriminate func-tion analysis to identify which aspects of female patterning can reliably classify species.We then tested the role of female features in male mate choice for E.zonale,by measuring male preference for computer animations displaying the identified(species specific)conspecific features.We found that the region above the lateral line is important in mediating male mate preferences,with males spending a significantly greater proportion of time with animations exhibiting conspecific female patterning in this region than with animations exhibiting heterospecific female patterning.Our results suggest that the aspects of female phenotypes that are the target of male mate choice are different from the conspicuous male phenotypes that traditionally characterize species. | Natalie S.ROBERTS Tamra C.MENDELSON | 2021 | Current Zoology2021,67,2: | 0 |
