1GIS based Landslide Susceptibility Mapping of Tevankarai Ar Sub-watershed,Kodaikkanal,India using Binary Logistic Regression Analysis显示文摘Landslide susceptibility mapping is the first step in regional hazard management as it helps to understand the spatial distribution of the probability of slope failure in an area.An attempt is made to map the landslide susceptibility in Tevankarai Ar subwatershed,Kodaikkanal,India using binary logistic regression analysis.Geographic Information System is used to prepare the database of the predictor variables and landslide inventory map,which is used to build the spatial model of landslide susceptibility.The model describes the relationship between the dependent variable(presence and absence of landslide) and the independent variables selected for study(predictor variables) by the best fitting function.A forward stepwise logistic regression model using maximum likelihood estimation is used in the regression analysis.An inventory of 84 landslides and cells within a buffer distance of 10m around the landslide is used as the dependent variable.Relief,slope,aspect,plan curvature,profile curvature,land use,soil,topographic wetness index,proximity to roads and proximity to lineaments are taken as independent variables.The constant and the coefficient of the predictor variable retained by the regression model are used to calculate the probability of slope failure and analyze the effect of each predictor variable on landslide occurrence in thestudy area.The model shows that the most significant parameter contributing to landslides is slope.The other significant parameters are profile curvature,soil,road,wetness index and relief.The predictive logistic regression model is validated using temporal validation data-set of known landslide locations and shows an accuracy of 85.29 %.Sujatha E RAMANI Kumarvel PITCHAIMANI Victor Rajamanickam GNANAMANICKAM 2011Journal of Mountain Science2011,8,4:11
2Congenital hyperinsulinism:Role of fluorine-18L-3, 4 hydroxyphenylalanine positron emission tomography scanning显示文摘Congenital hyperinsulinism(CHI) is a rare but complex heterogeneous disorder caused by unregulated secre-tion of insulin from the β-cells of the pancreas leading to severe hypoglycaemia and neuroglycopaenia. Swift diagnosis and institution of appropriate management is crucial to prevent or minimise adverse neurodevel-opmental outcome in children with CHI. Histologically there are two major subtypes of CHI, diffuse and focal disease and the management approach will significantly differ depending on the type of the lesion. Patients with medically unresponsive diffuse disease require a near total pancreatectomy, which then leads on to the de-velopment of iatrogenic diabetes mellitus and pancre-atic exocrine insufficiency. However patients with focaldisease only require a limited pancreatectomy to re-move only the focal lesion thus providing complete cure to the patient. Hence the preoperative differentiation of the histological subtypes of CHI becomes paramount in the management of CHI. Fluorine-18L-3, 4-hydroxy-phenylalanine positron emission tomography(18F-DOPA-PET) is now the gold standard for pre-operative differentiation of focal from diffuse disease and locali-sation of the focal lesion. 3Microbiology of gallbladder bile in uncomplicated symptomatic cholelithiasis显示文摘BACKGROUND:Few studies have assessed microflora and their antibiotic sensitivity in normal bile and lithogenic bile with different types of gallstones. METHODS:We performed a case control study of 70 bile samples(35 cholesterol and 35 pigment stones from 51 females and 19 males,aged 21-72 years with a median age of 37 years)from patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for uncomplicated cholelithiasis,and 20 controls(14 females and 6 males,aged 33-70 years with a median age of 38 years)who underwent laparotomy and had no gallbladder stone shown by ultrasound scan.The bile samples were aerobically cultured to assess microflora and their antibiotic susceptibility.The procedures were undertaken under sterile conditions. RESULTS:Thirty-eight(54%)of the 70 patients with gallstones had bacterial isolates.Nine isolates(26%)were from cholesterol stone-containing bile and 29 isolates (82%)from pigment stone-containing bile(P=0.01,t test). Twenty-eight of these 38(74%)bile samples were shown positive only after enrichment in brain heart infusion medium(BHI)(P=0.02,t test).The overall bacterial isolates from bile samples revealed E.coli predominantly,followed by P.aeruginosa,Enterococcus spp.,Klebsiella spp.and S. epidermidis.There were no bacterial isolates in the bile of controls after either direct inoculation or enrichment in BHI.CONCLUSIONS:Bacterial isolates were found in pigment stone-containing bile.Non-lithogenic bile revealed no bacteria,showing an association between gallstone formation and the presence of bacteria in bile.Antibiotic sensitivity patterns of isolated organisms were similar irrespective of the type of stone.Vasitha Abeysuriya Kemal Ismil Deen Tamara Wijesuriya Sujatha Senadera Salgado 2008Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2008,7,6:3

5Watershed Prioritization of Palar Sub-watershed Based on the Morphometric and Land Use Analysis显示文摘Morphometric analysis is an indispensable tool for hydrological investigation that involves the development and management of drainage basin. This study characterizes the micro watersheds in the Palar sub-watershed using morphometric analysis and assesses its risk by land use and land cover features in a particular micro watershed. Palar sub-watershed is divided into 6 micro watersheds for prioritization based on morphometric and land use analysis. Several morphometric parameters(linear, shape and relief)are determined from the drainage map; ranks are assigned based on their capacity to induce erodability and degradation. Final ranking is based on the composite index calculated from the sum of the ranks of each morphometric parameter. Morphometric analysis reveals micro watersheds 5 and 6 as most susceptible and 2 and 3 as low susceptible. Land use is mapped using IRS ID LISS III satellite data. The risk in terms of watershed degradation involved to each micro watershed is based on the ranks of each land use feature, obtained from a similar composite index as that of morphometric analysis. Land use analysis shows that micro watersheds 2 and 4 fall under high priority category while 5 and 6 under low priority category. Integration of the morphometric and land use analysis shows that only micro watershed 1 falls under the same category in both analyses. Control measures are suggested to contain degradation depending on its specific land use pattern and morphometric features. 6Assessment of knowledge and attitude about basic life support among dental interns and postgraduate students in Bangalore city,India显示文摘BACKGROUND: Life-threatening emergencies can occur at anytime, at anywhere and in anyone. Effective management of an emergency situation in the dental office is ultimately the dentist's responsibility. The lack of training and inability to cope with medical emergencies can lead to tragic consequences and sometimes legal complications. Therefore, health professionals including dentists must be well prepared to deal with medical emergencies. This study was undertaken to assess the knowledge about and attitude towards basic life support(BLS) among dental interns and postgraduate students in Bangalore city, India.METHODS: A cross sectional survey was conducted among dental interns and postgraduate students from May 2014 to June 2014 since few studies have been conducted in Bangalore city. A questionnaire with 17 questions regarding the knowledge about and attitude towards BLS was distributed to 202 study participants.RESULTS: The data analyzed using the Chi-square test showed that dental interns and postgraduate students had average knowledge about BLS. In the 201 participants, 121(59.9%) had a positive attitude and 81(40.1%) had a negative attitude towards BLS.CONCLUSIONS: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation should be considered as part of the dental curriculum. 7Experimental charge density distribution and its correlation to structural and optical properties of Sm^3+ doped Nd2O3 nanophosphors显示文摘Pure and Sm^(3+) doped Nd_2 O_3 nanophosphors were synthesized using modified Pechini method. The phase formation with symmetry of the sample is confirmed by the Rietveld refinement of the powder Xray diffraction(PXRD) data. The surface morphology and the crystallite size were examined using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and the results confirmed that the synthesized particles are in nanosize. The energy-dispersive X-ray(EDX) analysis was done to confirm the purity of the sample. The optical properties of the sample were studied using ultraviolet-visible range(UV-Vis) spectroscopic analysis and photoluminescence studies. The calculated band gap of the synthesized Nd_2 O_3 was found to be higher than that of bulk Nd_2 O_3. The photoluminescence(PL) of the prepared samples reveals that doping with Sm3+ ion has influenced the optical properties. Quantitative investigation on charge density distribution was done by analysing the 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional charge density maps drawn along the bonding directions. The maximum entropy method(MEM)/Rietveld analysis was used for the first time to analyse the charge density in the chosen system. Charge density arrangement in the unit cell is correlated to the analysed photoluminescent(PL) properties. The spectral behaviour of the samples has been explained through charge ordering which are verified using experimental data obtained.
