| 1 | Thirty million year deep-sea records in the South China Sea显示文摘In the spring of 1999 the Ocean Drilling Pro-gram (ODP) Leg 184 Shipboard Party cored 17 holes at 6 deep water sites in the northern and southern parts of the South China Sea (SCS). Chinese scientists actively partici-pated in the entire process of this first deep-sea drilling leg off China, from proposal to post-cruise studies. More than 30 categories of analyses have been conducted post-cruise in various Chinese laboratories on a large number of core sam-ples, and the total number of analyses exceeded 60 thousand. The major scientific achievements of the Leg 184 studies are briefly reported in three successive papers, with the first one presented here dealing with deep-sea stratigraphy and evolu-tion of climate cycles. This ODP leg has established the best deep-sea stratigraphic sequences in the Western Pacific: the 23-Ma isotope sequence from the Dong-Sha area is unique worldwide because of its continuity; the last 5-Ma sequence from the Nansha area represents one of the best 4 ODP sites worldwide with the highest time-resolution for that time in-terval, and the sequences of physical properties enable a de-cadal-scale time resolution. All these together have provided for the first time high-quality marine records for paleoenvi-ronmental studies in the Asian-Pacific region. | 2 | Evolution of the South China Sea and monsoon history revealed in deep-sea records显示文摘As the third summary report of ODP Leg 184 to the South China Sea (SCS), this paper discusses the evolution of the East Asian monsoon and the SCS basin. A multi-proxy approach, involving geochemistry, micropaleontology, pollen and other analyses, was adopted for reconstructing the evolutionary history of the East Asian monsoon, which was characterized by a series of paleo-climate events especially at 8, 3.2, 2.2 and 0.4 Ma. The new record indicates similar stages in the development of the East and South Asian monsoons, with an enhanced winter monsoon over East Asia being the major difference. The rich spectrums of monsoon variability from the southern SCS also reveal other characteristic features of the low latitude ocean. Evidence for the evolution of the SCS includes the hemipelagic Oligocene sediments, implying the existence of deep water environments during the early seafloor spreading stage of the SCS basin. The four major unconformities and some remarkable diagenetic features in upper Oligocene deposits indicate the strongest tectonic events in the region. | 3 | Volcanism at the Permian-Triassic Boundary in South China and Its Effects on Mass Extinction显示文摘This paper discusses the clayrocks widespread at the Permian-Triassic boundary, which are mostly of volcanic origin. Volcanogenetic textures, structures and minerals such as high-temperature quartz are found in clayrocks at the Permian-Triassic boundary in many places. Thousands of microspherules have been collected from the Boundary clayrocks, many of which exhibit the typical features of the process from melting to cooling and solidification. indicating that they were formed by volcanic eruption or extraterrestrial impact. Volcanic effects on the Permian-Triassic mass extinction may be reflected in conodonts, algae and ammonoids. The Boundary clayrocks are found in many Permian-Triassic sections along the coast of Tethys. | 5 | Preparation of Mullite Whiskers and Their Enhancement Effect on Ceramic Matrix Composites显示文摘Mullite whiskers were facilely prepared by sintering kyanite at high temperature, with the addition of AlF3·3H2O. The as-prepared whiskers have been characterized systematically in terms of phase composition, morphology, and structure. Results showed that the morphology and size of mullite whiskers were strongly depended on the content of AlF3·3H2O and sintering temperature. At temperatures in the range of 1 100 to 1 500 ℃ with 4 wt% addition of AlF3·3H2O, the well-shaped mullite whiskers were obtained. For an instance, the mullite whiskers with 5-10 μm in length and 0.1-0.2 μm in cross-section could be formed at 1 400 ℃, with 4 wt% addition of AlF3·3H2O. | 7 | Generation of male-sterile soybean lines with the CRISPR/Cas9 system显示文摘Soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.] provides a rich source of plant protein and oil worldwide. The commercial use of transgenic technology in soybean has become a classical example of the application of biotechnology to crop improvement. Although genetically modified soybeans have achieved commercial success,hybrid soybean breeding is also a potential way to increase soybean yield. Soybean cytoplasmic malesterile(CMS) lines have been used in three-line hybrid breeding systems, but their application to exploiting soybean heterosis has been limited by rare germplasm resource of sterile lines. The generation of various genetic diversity male-sterile soybean lines will help to overcome the shortcoming. In this study,we used targeted editing of AMS homologs in soybean by CRISPR/Cas9 technology for the first time to generate stable male-sterile lines. Targeted editing of GmAMS1 resulted in a male-sterile phenotype,while editing of GmAMS2 failed to produce male-sterile lines. | 8 | Timing of the terrestrial Permian-Triassic boundary biotic crisis:Implications from U-Pb dating of authigenic zircons显示文摘The Late Permian to Early Triassic transition represents one of the most important Phanerozoic mass extinction episodes. The cause of this event is still in debate between catastrophic and gradual mechanisms. This study uses the U-Pb method on zircons from the uppermost Permian/lowermost Triassic clay deposits at Chahe (Guizhou Province, SW China) to examine time constraints for this event. The results of both this and previous studies show that the ages of Bed 68a and 68c (the upper clay bed of the terrestrial Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB)) respectively are 252.6±2.8 and 247.5±2.8 Ma. This age (within the margin of error) almost accords with the upper clay bed (Bed 28) age of Meishan and the eruption age of Tunguss Basalt, and is so far the most accurate age obtained from terrestrial PTB. The claystone of Bed 68 was formed in the earliest Triassic. The biotic crisis occurred at nearly the same time in terrestrial and marine environments during Permian-Triassic interval; however the extinction patterns and processes are different. | 10 | The miR166 mediated regulatory module controls plant height by regulating gibberellic acid biosynthesis and catabolism in soybean显示文摘MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are endogenous small noncoding RNAs that play critical roles in regulating plant growth and development.Here,we used Short Tandem Target Mimic(STTM)technology to generate soybean(Glycine max(L.)Merr.)miRNA knockdown lines and identify miRNAs that regulate plant height,a key agronomic trait that affects yield.STTM166 successfully silenced miR166 in soybean and upregulated the expression of miR166 target genes,such as ATHB14-LIKE.The miR166 knockdown lines(GmSTTM166)displayed a reduced plant height phenotype.Moreover,GmSTTM166 plants contained lower levels of bioactive gibberellic acid(GA3)than wild-type plants,and application of exogenous GA partially rescued the dwarf phenotype of GmSTTM166.Knockdown of miR166 altered the expression of genes involved in GA biosynthesis and catabolism.Further analysis revealed that ATHB14-LIKE directly represses transcription of the GA biosynthesis genes Gm GA1 and Gm GA2,while activating transcription of the GA catabolic gene GIBBERLLIN 2 OXIDASE2(GmGA2ox2).Collectively,these results reveal a pivotal role for miR166 in the genetic control of plant height in soybean,thereby providing invaluable insights for molecular breeding to improve soybean yield. | Chen Zhao Jingjing Ma Yaohua Zhang Suxin Yang Xianzhong Feng Jun Yan | 2022 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2022,64,5: | 1 |
