| 1 | Effect of silicone oil on the microstructure, gelation and rheological properties of sorbitan monostearate–sesame oil oleogels显示文摘Oleogels contain oil or a non-polar liquid which is gelled with an agent called an organogelator. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of silicone oil(cyclopentasiloxane) to the gelation process and to the properties of sorbitan monostearate(SMS)–sesame oil oleogel and compared with that of SMS–sesame oil oleogel and SMS–cyclopentasiloxane oleogel. Three different oil phases; sesame oil phase, cyclopentasiloxane phase and a mixture of cyclopentasiloxane and sesame oil, were used to prepare oleogels with SMS gelator. The critical gelling concentrations(CGC) for oleogels were determined using different concentration of SMS in a range of 5%–22%(w/w). The characterization of the developed oleogels was done using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), polarized light microscope, rheometer, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The addition of cyclopentasiloxane reduced the CGC of SMS–sesame oil oleogel from 20% to 10%(w/w). In microscopic characterization, the oleogels with a mixture of oil phases showed the longer and thicker three-dimensional gel network than that of oleogels with sesame oil and cyclopentasiloxane. FTIR studies demonstrated that this network formation was mainly due to hydrogen bonding. Rheological measurements revealed that the combination of cyclopentasiloxane and sesame oil produced strong gel with higher complex modulus values and longer linear viscoelastic region than oleogels prepared with sesame oil and cyclopentasiloxane. In addition, oleogels with the combination of the two oils had higher enthalpy( H m) and entropy( S m) thus could increase thermodynamic stability of the oleogels. Therefore, the addition of cyclopentasiloxane can improve the physical, ther-mal properties and stability of SMS–sesame oil oleogel, provide greater sensory profile and better product aesthetics. | 3 | Malaria profiles and challenges in artemisinin resistance containment in Myanmar显示文摘Background:This study examined evolving malaria profiles from January,2010 to December,2014 to evaluate achievements and challenges of implementing measures to prevent and control spread of artemisinin resistance in Myanmar.Methods:Using National Malaria Control Programme(NMCP)data,a cross-sectional descriptive study of 52 townships in artemisinin-resistant containment areas in Myanmar was conducted.Annual program data were analysed,and trends over time are graphically presented.Results:In the 52 study townships populated by 8.7 million inhabitants,malaria incidence showed a decreasing trend from 10.54 per 1000 population in 2010 to 2.53 in 2014,and malaria mortalities also decreased from 1.83 per 100000 population in 2010 to 0.17 in 2014.The proportion of confirmed to total tested malaria cases also decreased from 6 to 1%,while identification of cases improved.All cases from all parasites species,including Plasmodium falciparum,decreased.Coverage of LLIN(long-lasting insecticidal net)/ITN(insecticide-treated mosquito nets)and indoor residual spraying(IRS)was high in targeted areas with at-risk persons,even though the total population was not covered.In addition to passive case detection(PCD),active case detection(ACD)was conducted in hard-to-reach areas and worksites where mobile migrant populations were present.ACD improved in most areas from 2012 to 2014,but continues to need to be strengthened.Conclusions:The findings provide useful data on the malaria situation in artemisinin-resistant initiative areas,which may be useful for the NMCP to meet its elimination goal.These profiles could contribute to better planning,implementation,and evaluation of intervention activities. | Thet Wai Nwe Tin Oo Khin Thet Wai Shuisen Zhou Johan van Griensven Palanivel Chinnakali Safieh Shah Aung Thi | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 2 |

| 7 | Assessment of household ownership of bed nets in areas with and without artemisinin resistance containment measures in Myanmar显示文摘Background:Myanmar lies in the Greater Mekong Subregion where there is artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria.As the artemisinin compound is the pillar of effective antimalarial therapies,containing the spread of artemisinin resistance is a national and global priority.The use of insecticide-treated bed nets/long-lasting insecticidal nets(ITNs/LLINs)is the key intervention for ensuring the reduction of malaria transmission and the spread of resistant strains,and for eventually eliminating malaria.This study aimed at assessing household ownership of,access to,and utilization of bed nets in areas of Myanmar with and without artemisinin resistance containment measures.Methods:Secondary data from a nationwide community-based malaria survey conducted by the National Malaria Control Program in 2014 were analyzed.Based on evidence of artemisinin resistance,Myanmar was divided into tiers 1,2,and 3:townships in tiers 1 and 2 were aggregated as the Myanmar Artemisinin Resistance Containment(MARC)areas and were compared with tier 3 townships,which were defined as non-MARC areas.The chi-square test was used to compare groups,and the level of significance was set at P≤0.05.Results:Of the 6328 households assessed,97.2%in both MARC and non-MARC areas had at least one bed net(any type),but only 63%of households had ITNs/LLINs.Only 44%of households in MARC areas and 24%in non-MARC areas had adequate numbers of ITNs/LLINs(one ITN/LLIN per two persons,P<0.001).Nearly 44%of household members had access to ITNs/LLINs.Regarding the utilization of ITNs/LLINs,45%of household members used them in MARC areas and 36%used them in non-MARC areas(P<0.001,desired target=100%).Utilization of ITNs/LLINs among children aged below five years and pregnant women(high malaria risk groups)was low,at 44%and 42%,respectively.Conclusions:This study highlights the nationwide shortfalls in the ownership of,access to,and utilization of ITNs/LLINs in Myanmar,which is of particular concern in terms of containing the spread of artemisinin resistance.It highlights the need for priority attention to be paid and mobilization of resources in order to improve bed net coverage and utilization through bed net distribution and/or social marketing,information dissemination,and awareness-raising. | Thae Maung Maung Tin Oo Khin Thet Wai Thaung Hlaing Philip Owiti Binay Kumar Hemant Deepak Shewade Rony Zachariah Aung Thi | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 1 |

| 14 | Mapping and modelling the impact of mass drug adminstration on filariasis prevalence in Myanmar显示文摘Background:Lymphatic filariasis(LF)is endemic in Myanmar and targeted for elimination.To highlight the National Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis(NPELF)progress between 2000 and 2014,this paper describes the geographical distribution of LF,the scale-up and impact of mass drug administration(MDA)implementation,and the first evidence of the decline in transmission in five districts.Methods:The LF distribution was determined by mapping historical and baseline prevalence data collected by NPELF.Data on the MDA implementation,reported coverage rates and sentinel site surveillance were summarized.A statistical model was developed from the available prevalence data to predict prevalence at township level by year of measurement.Transmission assessment survey(TAS)methods,measuring antigenemia(Ag)prevalence in children,were used to determine whether prevalence was below a level where recrudescence is unlikely to occur.Results:The highest baseline LF prevalence was found in the Central Valley region.The MDA implementation activities scaled up to cover 45 districts,representing the majority of the endemic population,with drug coverage rates ranging from 60.0%to 98.5%.Challenges related to drug supply and local conflict were reported,and interrupted MDA in some districts.Overall,significant reductions in LF prevalence were found,especially after the first 2 to 3 rounds of MDA,which was supported by the corresponding model.The TAS activities in five districts found only two Ag positive children,resulting in all districts passing the critical threshold.Conclusion:Overall,the Myanmar NPELF has made positive steps forward in the elimination of LF despite several challenges,however,it needs to maintain momentum,drawing on international stakeholder support,to aim towards the national and global goals of elimination. | Ni Ni Aye Zaw Lin Khin Nan Lon Nay Yi Yi Linn Thet Wai Nwe Khin Mon Mon Kapa Ramaiah Hannah Betts Louise A.Kelly-Hope | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 1 |
