3Characterization and seasonal distribution of microplastics in the nearshore sediments of the south-east coast of India,Bay of Bengal显示文摘In view of increasing Microplastics(MPs)contamination in the marine environment and dearth of baseline data,a study was conducted on the abundance,characterization,and seasonal distribution of MPs in the nearshore sediments of the south-east coast of India.Sediment samples(n=130)were collected at a distance of 1 km and 10 km from the shore region at varying depths(8–45 m)along the Chennai to Puducherry coast(165 km stretch),representing two seasons,i.e.,south-west(July 2019 and July 2020)and north-east(January 2020)monsoons.The average abundance of MPs at the 22 offshore sites along the Chennai to Puducherry coast varied from 9±4.3 to 19±12.9 particles/50 g dry weight,in July 2019 and January 2020,respectively.July 2020 had an average abundance of 10±4.5 particles/50 g dry weight.Spatially,high levels of MPs were found at 1km stations and transects in proximity to the river inlets,and temporally,the north-east month recorded the maximum concentration.The dominant morphotype was the filament,and the major polymers were polyethylene and polypropylene.Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM)images revealed the surface irregularity and degradation of MPs due to weathering.The study highlights that high sediment contamination by MPs occurs during heavy rainfall and accumulates closer to river inlets.Eventually,this study suggests that appropriate management of plastic wastes on the landside will reduce MP contamination in the marine environment.K.Dhineka M.Sambandam S.K.Sivadas T.Kaviarasan Umakanta Pradhan Mehmuna Begum Pravakar Mishra M.V.Ramana Murthy 2022Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,1:0
4Differential RNA Editing of Mitochondrial Genes in WA-Cytoplasmic Based Male Sterile Line Pusa 6A, and Its Maintainer and Restorer Lines显示文摘RNA editing changes the nucleotides at the transcript level of mitochondrial genes which results in synthesis of functional proteins.This study was designed to find the editing sites which could be implicated in male fertility restoration and to develop editing based markers for differentiation of cytoplasmic male sterility and maintainer lines from each other.DNA and RNA from young panicles were isolated from three-line system of hybrid rice PRH10,wild abortive(WA)cytoplasm based male sterile(A line Pusa 6A),maintainer(B line Pusa 6B)and restorer(R line PRR78)lines.Pusa 6A and PRR78 having the same WA cytoplasm are allo-nuclear and iso-cytpolasmic lines.The genomic and cDNA amplicons for eight mitochondrial genes(18SrRNA,atp6,atp9,cobII,coxI,coxIII,nadI and rps3)were sequenced and compared.Differences in genomic and cDNA sequences were considered as editing.Two hundred and thirty editing sites having base substitution or insertion/deletion were identified with the highest in 18SrRNA(5.74%)and the lowest in coxI(0.60%).The highest editing sites were observed in fertile maintainer Pusa 6B followed by PRR78 and Pusa 6A,of which random five editing sites in five different rice mitochondrial transcripts namely atp9,cobII,coxIII,rps3 and 18SrRNA were chosen and validated through cleaved amplified polymorphism sequence(CAPS)analysis and found to be partially edited in four genes.The identical editing sites of different mitochondrial genes from maintainer and restorer lines might reflect their possible contribution to fertility restoration of sterile WA cytoplasm.Umakanta NGANGKHAM Swarup Kumar PARIDA Ashok Kumar SINGH Trilochan MOHAPATRA 2019Rice science2019,26,5:0
5Variability in total antioxidant capacity, antioxidant leaf pigments and foliage yield of vegetable amaranth显示文摘Twenty vegetable amaranth genotypes were evaluated for total antioxidant capacity, antioxidant leaf pigments, vitamins, and selection of suitable genotypes for extraction of juice in a randomized complete block design(RCBD) with three replications. Vegetable amaranth was rich in chlorophyll, β-cyanins, β-xanthins, betalains, carotene, ascorbic acid and total antioxidant. The genotypes VA14, VA16, VA18, VA15, and VA20 could be selected as amaranth vegtable varieties with high yields and abundance antioxidant leaf pigments and vitamins to produce juice. The genotypes VA13 and VA19 had above-average foliage yield and high antioxidant profiles while the genotypes VA2, VA3, VA9, VA11, VA12, and VA17 had a high antioxidant profiles and below-average foliage yield. These genotypes could be used as a donor parent for integration of potential high antioxidant profiles genes into other genotypes. The correlation study revealed a strong positive association among all the antioxidant leaf pigments, total antioxidant capacity and foliage yield. Selection based on total antioxidant capacity, antioxidant leaf pigments could economically viable to improve the yield potential of vegetable amaranth genotypes. Total carotene and ascorbic acid exhibited insignificant genotypic correlation with all the traits except total antioxidant capacity.
