| 1 | Initial identification of heavy metals contamination in Taihu Lake, a eutrophic lake in China显示文摘A detailed investigation of seven heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, As, Pb, Zn, Ni) in the water column, interstitial water and surface sediment was conducted to quantify the extent of their contamination in Taihu Lake. Results showed the average total concentrations ranged from 0.93 μg/L for Cd to 47.03 μg/L for Zn. The dissolved concentrations in the overlying water ranged from 0.06 μg/L for Cd to 15.86 μg/L for Zn. The metals in the Taihu Lake surface water were primarily in the particulate phase, especially for Cd, whose particulate concentration represented 94.3% of the total. In the surface sediment, the mean concentrations for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb were 41.50, 28.72, 27.82, 65.46, 5.94, 0.82 and 41.17 mg/kg, respectively. The metals in the water column and sediments of Taihu Lake displayed significant spatial variations, and the higher metal concentrations mainly occurred in the north and west of Taihu Lake, especially in Zhushan Bay and West Taihu Lake. A quality assessment indicated that most of the metals in the surface water of Taihu Lake had no or low adverse health effects on organisms, except for Pb and Cu, which may cause chronic toxicity. Compared with the 'Consensus-Based Sediment Quality Guidelines', the polluting metals were Cr, Ni and Cd, and the polluted regions were confined to Zhushan Bay, Meiliang Bay and the west of Taihu Lake, especially for north of Zhushan Bay. The polluted areas for Cr, Ni and Cd were 14.36, 34.70 and 13.24 km 2 , respectively. | 2 | Influence of the post-treatment of HZSM-5 zeolite on catalytic performance for alkylation of benzene with methanol显示文摘The porous material HZSM-5 zeolite with micro-mesopore hierarchical porosity was prepared by post-treatment(combined alkali treatment and acid leaching) of parent zeolite and its catalytic performance for benzene alkylation with methanol was investigated. The effect of post-treatment on the textural properties was characterized by various techniques(including ICP-AES, XRD, nitrogen sorption isotherms, SEM, NH3-TPD, Py-IR and TG). The results indicated that the post-treatment could modify the structural and acidic properties of HZSM-5 zeolite. In this procedure, not only additional mesopores were created by selective extraction of silicon but also the acidity was tuned. Consequently, the modified HZSM-5 zeolite showed larger external surface area with less acid sites as compared to the parent zeolite. It was found out that the modified zeolite exhibited a higher benzene conversion and xylene selectivity for alkylation of benzene with methanol as well as excellent life span of the catalyst than conventional ones. This can be explained by the facts that the presence of additional mesopores improved the diffusion property in the reactions. Furthermore, the modified zeolite showed an appropriate Br?nsted acidity for effective suppression of the side reaction of methanol to olefins, thus reduced the accumulation of coke on the HZSM-5 zeolite, which was favorable for the catalyst stability. | 5 | MiR156 regulates anthocyanin biosynthesis through SPL targets and other microRNAs in poplar显示文摘Anthocyanins biosynthesized from the flavonoid pathway are types of pigments that are involved in the protection of poplar from biotic and abiotic stresses.Previous researchers studying anthocyanin-related transcription factors and structural genes in poplar have made significant discoveries.However,little is known about the regulatory role of microRNAs in anthocyanin biosynthesis in poplar.Here,we overexpressed miR156 in poplar to study the comprehensive effects of the miR156-SPL module on the biosynthesis of anthocyanins.Small RNA sequencing analysis revealed 228 microRNAs differentially expressed in transgenic poplar plants with dramatically increased miR156 levels.Furthermore,integrated microRNAomic and transcriptomic analysis suggested that two microRNAs,miR160h,and miR858,have the potential to affect anthocyanin accumulation in poplar by regulating auxin response factors and MYB transcription factors,respectively.Additionally,the accumulation of miR160h and miR858 displayed a positive correlation with miR156 levels,suggesting a possible interaction between the miR156-SPL module and these microRNAs in poplar.Last,metabolomics analysis revealed that the levels of anthocyanins,flavones,and flavonols were substantially elevated in transgenic poplar plants overexpressing miR156 compared with the wild type,whereas the total lignin content was reduced in the transgenic plants.Taken together,our results indicate that miR156 can fine tune the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway via multiple factors,including microRNAs,transcription factors,and the levels of structural genes,in poplar.This provides additional clues for understanding the complex regulatory network of anthocyanin biosynthesis in woody plants. | Yamei Wang Wenwen Liu Xinwei Wang Ruijuan Yang Zhenying Wu HanWang LeiWang Zhubing Hu Siyi Guo Hailing Zhang Jinxing Lin Chunxiang Fu | 2020 | Horticulture Research2020,7,1: | 9 |

| 8 | Interactions between central nervous system and peripheral metabolic organs显示文摘According to Descartes,minds and bodies are distinct kinds of “substance”,and they cannot have causal interactions.However,in neuroscience,the two-way interaction between the brain and peripheral organs is an emerging field of research.Several lines of evidence highlight the importance of such interactions.For example,the peripheral metabolic systems are overwhelmingly regulated by the mind(brain),and anxiety and depression greatly affect the functioning of these systems.Also,psychological stress can cause a variety of physical symptoms,such as bone loss.Moreover,the gut microbiota appears to play a key role in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases.Mechanistically,as the command center of the body,the brain can regulate our internal organs and glands through the autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine system,although it is generally considered to be outside the realm of voluntary control.The autonomic nervous system itself can be further subdivided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.The sympathetic division functions a bit like the accelerator pedal on a car,and the parasympathetic division functions as the brake.The high center of the autonomic nervous system and the neuroendocrine system is the hypothalamus,which contains several subnuclei that control several basic physiological functions,such as the digestion of food and regulation of body temperature.Also,numerous peripheral signals contribute to the regulation of brain functions.Gastrointestinal(GI) hormones,insulin,and leptin are transported into the brain,where they regulate innate behaviors such as feeding,and they are also involved in emotional and cognitive functions.The brain can recognize peripheral inflammatory cytokines and induce a transient syndrome called sick behavior(SB),characterized by fatigue,reduced physical and social activity,and cognitive impairment.In summary,knowledge of the biological basis of the interactions between the central nervous system and peripheral organs will promote the full understanding of how our body works and the rational treatment of disorders.Thus,we summarize current development in our understanding of five types of central-peripheral interactions,including neural control of adipose tissues,energy expenditure,bone metabolism,feeding involving the brain-gut axis and gut microbiota.These interactions are essential for maintaining vital bodily functions,which result in homeostasis,i.e.,a natural balance in the body’s systems. | Wenwen Zeng Fan Yang Wei L.Shen Cheng Zhan Peng Zheng Ji Hu | 2022 | Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,10: | 5 |

| 10 | Saltation and suspension of wind-blown particle movement显示文摘Several factors that affect the trajectories of sand particles in a wind-blown sand flux are analyzed by considering the stochastic movement of sand particles transported within turbulent flow in the atmospheric boundary layer. The results show that there are remarkably different trajectories for particles with the same diameter, the same vertical liftoff velocity from sand bed and the same friction ve-locity of wind because of the presence of turbulence flow. The vertical fluctuating velocity of sand particles can be regarded as a reflection of the transport mode, which is related to not only the diameters and liftoff velocity of sand particles but also the shear stress velocity of wind. The critical liftoff velocity and the fraction of each transport mode are calculated for the given particle diameter and friction ve-locity of wind. | 15 | Yielding behavior of triplex medium Mn steel alternated with cooling strategies altering martensite/ferrite interfacial feature显示文摘In this paper, we report the influence of cooling processes on the yielding behavior of a medium Mn steel(MMS) with triplex microstructure, i.e. austenite(γ), ferrite(α) and as-quenched martensite(α’). After the intercritical annealing(IA) at both 725℃ and 750℃, the steel was subjected to the two cooling processes, i.e. air cooling(AC) and water quenching(WQ). It exhibits the discontinuous yielding after the AC following the IA at 750℃ while the continuous yielding after the WQ. Compared with WQ process,both the dilatometry and the microstructural examinations show that the AC process leads to lower Ms temperature, larger retained austenite(RA) fraction and less martensite, the latter is always companied with geometry necessary dislocations(GNDs) generated near the α/α’ interfaces. Considering the complexity of nanosized tri-phases in this steel, the presence of martensite with key features in the resultant specimens was systematically examined by atom probe tomography(APT) on the samples prepared by the specific target lift-out method. The APT results directly revealed the C/Mn co-segregation at the α’/αinterfaces in the AC samples but not in WQ samples. The numerical simulation results further suggest that the segregation of C and Mn at the α’/α interfaces may be due to different mechanisms. We conclude that the yielding of triplex MMS is determined by both the quantity of GNDs generated near theα/α’ interfaces, which increases with martensite fraction, and the extent of their immobilization resulting from the interfacial segregation of solute atoms when the presence of martensite is sufficient. | 16 | Integrative analysis of prognostic long non-coding RNAs with copy number variation in bladder cancer显示文摘Copy number variations(CNVs), which can affect the role of long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs), are important genetic changes seen in some malignant tumors. We analyzed lncRNAs with CNV to explore the relationship between lncRNAs and prognosis in bladder cancer(BLCA). Messenger RNA(mRNA) expression levels, DNA methylation, and DNA copy number data of 408 BLCA patients were subjected to integrative bioinformatics analysis. Cluster analysis was performed to obtain different subtypes and differently expressed lncRNAs and coding genes. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis(WGCNA) was performed to identify the co-expression gene and lncRNA modules. CNV-associated lncRNA data and their influence on cancer prognosis were assessed with Kaplan-Meier survival curve. Multi-omics integration analysis revealed five prognostic lncRNAs with CNV, namely NR2 F1-AS1, LINC01138, THUMPD3-AS1, LOC101928489, and TMEM147-AS1, and a risk-score signature related to overall survival in BLCA was identified. Moreover, validated results in another independent Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO) dataset, GSE31684, were consistent with these results. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes(KEGG) enrichment analysis revealed that the mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK) signaling pathway, focal adhesion pathway, and Janus kinase-signal transducers and activators of transcription(JAK-STAT) signaling pathway were enriched in a high-risk score pattern, suggesting that imbalance in these pathways is closely related to tumor development. | 17 | The cancer-testis gene,MEIOB,sensitizes triple-negative breast cancer to PARP1 inhibitors by inducing homologous recombination deficiency显示文摘Objective:The newly defined cancer-testis(CT)gene,MEIOB,was previously found to play key roles in DNA double-strand break(DSB)repair.In this study,we aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of MEIOB in the carcinogenesis of triple-negative breast cancers(TNBCs).Methods:The Cancer Genome Atlas database was used to quantify the expression of MEIOB.Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between MEIOB expression and the prognosis of human TNBC.The effects of MEIOB on cell proliferation and migration in TNBCs were also assessed in vitro.Patient-derived xenograft(PDX)models were used to assess the sensitivity of breast cancers with active MEIOB to PARP1 inhibitors.Results:We confirmed MEIOB as a CT gene whose expression was restricted to the testes and breast tumors,especially TNBCs.Its activation was significantly associated with poor survival in breast cancer patients[overall,hazard ratio(HR)=1.90(1.16–2.06);TNBCs:HR=7.05(1.16–41.80)].In addition,we found that MEIOB was oncogenic and significantly promoted the proliferation of TNBC cells.Further analysis showed that MEIOB participated in DSB repair in TNBCs.However,in contrast to its function in meiosis,it mediated homologous recombination deficiency(HRD)through the activation of poly ADP-ribose polymerase(PARP)1 by interacting with YBX1.Furthermore,activated MEIOB was shown to confer sensitivity to PARP inhibitors,which was confirmed in PDX models.Conclusions:MEIOB played an oncogenic role in TNBC through its involvement in HRD.In addition,dysregulation of MEIOB sensitized TNBC cells to PARP inhibitors,so MEIOB may be a therapeutic target of PARP1 inhibitors in TNBC. | Yayun Gu Cheng Wang Rongxuan Zhu Jianshui Yang Wenwen Yuan Yanhui Zhu Yan Zhou Na Qin Hongbing Shen Hongxia Ma Hongxia Wang Xiaoan Liu Zhibin Hu | 2021 | Cancer Biology & Medicine2021,18,1: | 2 |
| 18 | Sex-specific association between coffee consumption and incident chronic kidney disease: a population-based analysis of 359,906 participants from the UK Biobank显示文摘Background:The risk for chronic kidney disease(CKD)is influenced by genetic predisposition,sex,and lifestyle.Previous research indicates that coffee is a potentially protective factor in CKD.The current study aims to investigate whether sex disparity exists in the coffee–CKD association,and whether genetic risk of CKD or genetic polymorphisms of caffeine metabolism affect this association.Methods:A total of 359,906 participants from the UK Biobank who were enrolled between 2006 and 2010 were included in this prospective cohort study,which aimed to estimate the hazard ratios for coffee intake and incident CKD using a Cox proportional hazard model.Allele scores of CKD and caffeine metabolism were additionally adjusted for in a subsample with qualified genetic data(n=255,343).Analyses stratified by genetic predisposition,comorbidities,and sex hormones were performed.Tests based on Bayesian model averaging were conducted to ascertain the robustness of the results.Results:Coffee was inversely associated with CKD in a dose-dependent manner.The effects of coffee did not differ across different strata of genetic risk for CKD,but were more evident among slower genetically predicted caffeine metabolizers.Significant sex disparity was observed(P value for interaction=0.013),in that coffee drinking was only associated with the risk reduction of CKD in females.Subgroup analysis revealed that testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG),but not estradiol,modified the coffee–CKD association.Conclusions:In addition to the overall inverse coffee–CKD association that was observed in the general population,we could also establish that a sex disparity existed,in that females were more likely to experience the benefit of the association.Testosterone and SHBG may partly account for the sex disparity. | Lei Tang Lina Yang Wenwen Chen Chunyang Li Yu Zeng Huazhen Yang Yao Hu Yuanyuan Qu Huan Song Xiaoxi Zeng Ping Fu | 2022 | Chinese Medical Journal2022,,12: | 2 |
