| 2 | Transcriptomic landscape regulated by the 14 types of bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs)in lineage commitment and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)显示文摘Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are ubiquitously-existing multipotent progenitors that can self-renew and differentiate into multiple lineages including osteocytes,chondrocytes,adipocytes,tenocytes and myocytes.MSCs represent one of the most commonly-used adult progenitors and serve as excellent progenitor cell models for investigating lineagespecific differentiation regulated by various cellular signaling pathways,such as bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs).As members of TGFb superfamily,BMPs play diverse and important roles in development and adult tissues.At least 14 BMPs have been identified in mammals.Different BMPs exert distinct but overlapping biological functions.Through a comprehensive analysis of 14 BMPs in MSCs,we demonstrated that BMP9 is one of the most potent BMPs in inducing osteogenic differentiation of MSCs.Nonetheless,a global mechanistic view of BMP signaling in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of MSCs remains to be fully elucidated.Here,we conducted a comprehensive transcriptomic profiling in the MSCs stimulated by 14 types of BMPs.Hierarchical clustering analysis classifies 14 BMPs into three subclusters:an osteo/chondrogenic/adipogenic cluster,a tenogenic cluster,and BMP3 cluster.We also demonstrate that six BMPs(e.g.,BMP2,BMP3,BMP4,BMP7,BMP8,and BMP9)can induce ISmads effectively,while BMP2,BMP3,BMP4,BMP7,and BMP11 up-regulate Smad-independent MAP kinase pathway.Furthermore,we show that many BMPs can upregulate the expression of the signal mediators of Wnt,Notch and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways.While the reported transcriptomic changes need to be further validated,our expression profiling represents the first-of-its-kind to interrogate a comprehensive transcriptomic landscape regulated by the 14 types of BMPs in MSCs. | Linghuan Zhang Qing Luo Yi Shu Zongyue Zeng Bo Huang Yixiao Feng Bo Zhang Xi Wang Yan Lei Zhenyu Ye Ling Zhao Daigui Cao Lijuan Yang Xian Chen Bin Liu William Wagstaff Russell R*Reid Hue H*Luu Rex C*Haydon Michael J*Lee Jennifer Moriatis Wolf Zhou Fu Tong-Chuan He Quan Kang | 2019 | Genes & Diseases2019,6,3: | 11 |

| 4 | Long-term tree productivity of a South Carolina coastal plain forest across a hydrology gradient显示文摘Aims In recent years,there has been an increased interest in examining changes in forest systems in response to drought,flooding,hurricanes and climate change.In the southern United States,forested wetlands are of special interest because of the extent of these forests.Coastal plain forested wetlands are among the most vulnerable to these climatic impacts.One of the problems in developing management practices for these coastal areas is the difficulty in adequately describing productivity relations and predicting how the structure and function of these communities might be affected by natural or anthropogenic disturbances.Community response to environmental change often occurs over a period of years,and the majority of reported studies are for 1–3 years in duration.This study documents long-term changes(10 years)in structure,composition and growth along a catena of high water table forested sites of an ancient beach ridge landscape in coastal South Carolina.Methods Aboveground net primary production(ANPP)of trees was monitored from 2000 to 2009 on three sites within a longleaf pine-swamp blackgum forest system on the southern end of theWaccamaw Neck area of Georgetown County,SC.Permanent study plots(20325 m)were established across a moisture gradient(Dry,Intermediate,and Wet).Water levels were continuously monitored,litterfall was measured monthly and growth of trees>10 cm diameter at breast height was monitored on an annual basis.Annual litterfall and tree production values were summed to provide estimates of ANPP.Important Findings The study site was under severe drought conditions July 2001 through late summer 2002 and again in 2007.Diameter growth was affected in all three sites,but with different patterns.It seems that diameter growth in the Wet site was more sensitive to drought conditions in 2001–02 and 2007 than either Dry or Intermediate sites.While droughts did not seem to have a significant impact on litterfall in the Wet site,litterfall in the Intermediate site was more sensitive to the drought than either Dry or Wet sites.ANPP was significantly lower in both Intermediate and Wet sites in 2001 at<602 g/m2.Highest ANPP(>1000 g/m2)occurred in the Intermediate and Wet sites in 2003 following a return to more normal water levels at the end of the drought.Maximum tree production occurred on the Wet site in 2003(657 g/m2),which exceeded total ANPP of any site in 2001.In the Dry site,ANPP remained relatively consistent throughout the study when compared to Wet and Intermediate sites.While litterfall estimates are well defined with 3–5 years of data,data collection is continuing to assess impact of drought on stem growth across the gradient,which is still not clear with 10 years of data. | William H.Conner Bo Song Thomas M.Williams Jeffery T.Vernon | 2011 | Journal of Plant Ecology2011,4,1: | 2 |
| 5 | Occupational Health Risk Assessment of Benzene,Toluene,and Xylene in Shanghai显示文摘Objective This study was designed to conduct a retrospective and systematic occupational health risk assessment(OHRA)of enterprises that used benzene,toluene,and xylene(BTX)in Shanghai,China.Methods All data for the study were obtained from 1,705 occupational health examination and evaluation reports from 2013 to 2017,and a semiquantitative model following Chinese OHRA guidelines(GBZ/T 298-2017)was applied for the assessment.Results The selected enterprises using BTX were mainly involved in manufacturing of products.Using the exposure level method,health risk levels associated with exposure to BTX were classified as medium,negligible,or low.However,the risk levels associated with benzene and toluene were significantly different according to job types,with gluers and inkers exhibiting greater health risks.For the same job type,the health risk levels assessed using the comprehensive index method were higher than those using the exposure level method.Conclusion Our OHRA reveals that workers who are exposed to BTX still face excessive health risk.Additionally,the risk level varied depending on job categories and exposure to specific chemicals.Therefore,additional control measures recommended by OHRA guidelines are essential to reduce worker exposure levels. | WANG Tong Shuai SONG Bo SUN Qing Hua LIN Yong Xin SUN Yuan SUN Pin JIA Xiao Dong William W.Au MEI Can Hua XIA Zhao Lin | 2021 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2021,34,4: | 2 |

| 16 | Porphyry Cu deposits linked to episodic growth of an underlying parental magma chamber显示文摘Saindak is one of the typical porphyry Cu deposits(PCDs)in the Chagai magmatic arc in Pakistan.Ore-forming porphyries at Saindak PCD are mainly composed of tonalite.Here,we use geochemistry of apatite enclosed in plagioclase phenocrysts from the ore-forming tonalite to constrain the releasing and recharging processes of S and Cl in the underlying parental magma chamber during PCD mineralization.Although apatite inclusions have homogeneous intra-grain S and Cl compositions,there is significant inter-grain S and Cl variations in apatite inclusions located from core to rim in the hosting plagioclase.Such inter-grain S and Cl variation in apatites are coupled with the core-to-rim trends of An,FeO and Mg contents of the hosting plagioclase phenocryst.It indicates that the Saindak PCD likely formed by episodic injection of primitive magmas during the growth of an underlying magma chamber,rather than by one major injection or by addition of mafic melt derived from different source region.Each primitive melt injection introduced essential ore-forming materials such as S and Cl,which were rapidly and effectively released to the coexisting fluids,causing mineralization.Once primitive melt injection stops,signaling the end of growth of underlying magma chamber,mineralization will cease quickly although the hydrothermal system can still survive for a long time.However,the later released fluids are relatively depleted in ore-forming materials,and thus have lower capability to generate mineralization.Accordingly,predominant porphyry-type mineralizations occurred during the growth rather than waning stage of a magmatic system. | Yuanchuan ZHENG Lu WANG Chuandong XUE Bo XU Abdul GHAFFAR Zhusen YANG Yongjun LU Limin ZHOU William L.GRIFFIN Zengqian HOU | 2020 | Science China Earth Sciences2020,63,11: | 1 |
