2Characterizing the optimal operation of photocatalytic degradation of BDE-209 by nano-sized TiO_2显示文摘Brominated flame retardants have been widely used in industry.There is a rapid growing public concern for their availabilities in the environment.Advanced oxidation process(AOP) is a promising and efficient technology which may be used to remove emerging chemicals such as brominated flame retardants.This study aims at investigating optimal operational conditions for the removal of BDE-209 using nano-scaled titanium(IV) oxide.The residual PBDE congeners after photocatalytical degradation of BDE-209 by TiO 2 were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).It was found that the degradability of BDE-209 by TiO 2 was attributed to its photocatalytic activity but not the small size of the particles.The half-life of removing BDE-209 by TiO 2 was 3.05 days under visible light.Tetra-and penta-BDEs were the major degraded products of BDE-209.Optimum conditions for photocatalytical degradation of BDE-209 was found to be at pH 12(93% ± 1%),5,10,20 mg/L(93.0% ± 1.70%,91.6% ± 3.21%,91.9% ± 0.952%,respectively),respectively of humic acid and in the form of anatase/rutile TiO 2(82% ± 3%).Hence,the efficiency of removing BDE-209 can be maximized while being cost effective at the said operating conditions.Ka Lai Chow Yu Bon Man Jin Shu Zheng Yan Liang Nora Fung Yee Tam Ming Hung Wong 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,9:8
3A review on radiofrequency,microwave and high-intensity focused ultrasound ablations for hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis显示文摘Importance:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is usually accompanied by liver cirrhosis,which makes treatment of this disease challenging.Liver transplantation theoretically provides an ultimate solution to the disease,but the maximal surgical stress and the scarcity of liver graft make this treatment option impossible for some patients.In an ideal situation,a treatment that is safe and effective should provide a better outcome for patients with the dilemma.Objective:This article aims to give a comprehensive review of various types of loco-ablative treatment for HCC.Evidence Review:Loco-ablative treatment bridges the gap between surgical resection and transarterial chemotherapy.Various types of ablative therapy have their unique ability,and evidence-based outcome analysis is the most important key to assisting clinicians to choose the most suitable treatment modality for their patients.Findings:Radiofrequency ablation(RFA)has a relatively longer history and more evidence to support its effectiveness.Microwave ablation(MWA)is gaining momentum because of its shorter ablation time and consistent ablation zone.High-intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU)ablation is a relatively new technology that provides non-invasive treatment for patients with HCC.It has been carried out at centers of excellence and it is a safe and effective treatment option for selected patients with HCC and liver cirrhosis.Conclusion and Relevance:Selective use of different loco-ablative therapies will enhance clinicians’treatment options for treatment of HCC.Tan To Cheung Ka Wing Ma Wong Hoi She 2021Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition2021,10,2:6

5Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong显示文摘Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works(SCISTW and STSTW)in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment,respectively. This study aimed at(1) determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs,(2) comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and(3) characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants(STPs). Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes(from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ng/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively). It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal efficiency 94.4% ± 4.12% vs. 79.2% ± 7.48%(p < 0.05). The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples(dewatered sludge contained92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively) than liquid samples(final effluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively).Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs(1.85 and 39.3 kg/year, respectively for the two STPs) being discharged into Hong Kong coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.Yu Bon Man Ka Lai Chow Zhang Cheng Wing Yin Mo Yung Hau Chan James Chung Wah Lam Frankie Tat Kwong Lau Wing Cheong Fung Ming Hung Wong 2017Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,3:5
6Transfusion-transmitted hepatitis E:What we know so far?显示文摘Hepatitis E virus(HEV)is a major cause of viral hepatitis globally.There is growing concern about transfusion-transmitted HEV(TT-HEV)as an emerging global health problem.HEV can potentially result in chronic infection in immunocompromised patients,leading to a higher risk of liver cirrhosis and even death.Between 0.0013%and 0.281%of asymptomatic blood donors around the world have HEV viremia,and 0.27%to 60.5%have anti-HEV immunoglobulin G.HEV is infectious even at very low blood concentrations of the virus.Immunosuppressed patients who develop persistent hepatitis E infection should have their immunosuppressant regimen reduced;ribavirin may be considered as treatment.Pegylated interferon can be considered in those who are refractory or intolerant to ribavirin.Sofosbuvir,a nucleotide analog,showed modest antiviral activity in some clinical studies but sustained viral response was not achieved.Therefore,rescue treatment remains an unmet need.The need for HEV screening of all blood donations remains controversial.Universal screening has been adopted in some countries after consideration of risk and resource availability.Various pathogen reduction methods have also been proposed to reduce the risk of TT-HEV.Future studies are needed to define the incidence of transmission through transfusion,their clinical features,outcomes and prognosis.Carmen Ka Man Cheung Sunny Hei Wong Alvin Wing Hin Law Man Fai Law 2022World Journal of Gastroenterology2022,28,1:5

10Phase Ⅰ/Ⅱ randomized controlled trial of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy for chronic stroke显示文摘AIM To examine the safety and efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell(MSC) therapy for intracerebral haemorrhage with neurological dysfunctions for a year.METHODS MSC were ex vivo expanded from 29 mL(17-42 mL) autologous bone marrow. Patients were randomized to have two intravenous injections of autologous MSC or placebos in four weeks apart. Neurological functions and clinical outcomes were monitored before treatment and at 12^(th), 16^(th), 24^(th), 36^(th) and 60^(th) week upon completion of^(th)e treatment. RESULTS A mean of 4.57 × 10~7(range: 1.43 × 10~7-8.40 × 10~7) MSC per infusion was administered accounting to 8.54 × 10~5(2.65 × 10~5-1.45 × 10~6) per kilogram body weight in two occasions. There was neither adverse event at time of administration nor sign of de novo tumour development among patients after monitoring for a year post MSC therapy. Neuro-restoration and clinical improvement in terms of modified Barthel index, functional independence measure and extended Glasgow Outcome Scale were evident among patients having MSC therapy compared to patients receiving placebos. 11Intravenous fluid selection rationales in acute clinical management显示文摘BACKGROUND: Intravenous fluid(IVF) is commonly used in acute clinical management. This study aimed to review the choice and primary considerations in IVF prescriptions and to evaluate the adequacy of guidelines and trainings on it in the New Territories West Cluster(NTWC) of Hong Kong.METHODS: This is a descriptive study based on data collected from an online survey. Data were processed by SPSS for statistical analysis. This study focused on a general description and doctor-nurse between group comparison. Participants were asked the choice of IVF for nine acute clinical scenarios and provide reason. A 1–10 scale was used to assess the sufficiency of guideline, training and information, and time for revision on IVF prescription.RESULTS: 0.9% sodium chloride was the most familiar IVF(36%), followed by 5% Dextrose solution(26%). In the nine scenarios, the most chosen IVF was 0.9% sodium chloride(37%–61%). There was significant difference in the choice of IVF between doctors and nurses in 7 cases. The second most chosen IVF for doctors was Plasma-Lyte A while that for nurses was Gelofusine. Departmental practice was the most chosen reason to account for the prescription. The adequacy of guideline, information and training, and time for revision was rated 5. Doctors had significantly more time at work than nurses to update knowledge in IVF prescription(5.41 versus 4.57).CONCLUSION: 0.9% sodium chloride was mostly chosen. The choice of IVF was mainly based on departmental practice. 13Impact of small-for-size liver grafts on medium-term and long-term graft survival in living donor liver transplantation: A meta-analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND Small-for-size grafts (SFSGs) in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) could optimize donor postoperative outcomes and also expand the potential donor pool. Evidence on whether SFSGs would affect medium-term and long-term recipient graft survival is lacking. AIM To evaluate the impact of small-for-size liver grafts on medium-term and longterm graft survival in adult to adult LDLT. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed by searching eligible studies published before January 24, 2019 on PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. The primary outcomes were 3-year and 5-year graft survival. Incidence of small-for-size syndrome and short term mortality were also extracted. RESULTS This meta-analysis is reported according to the guidelines of the PRISMA 2009 Statement. Seven retrospective observational studies with a total of 1821 LDLT recipients were included in the meta-analysis. SFSG is associated with significantly poorer medium-term graft survival. The pooled odds ratio for 3-year graft survival was 1.58 [95% confidence interval 1.10-2.29, P = 0.014]. On the other hand, pooled results of the studies showed that SFSG had no significant discriminatory effect on 5-year graft survival with an odds ratio of 1.31 (95% confidence interval 0.87-1.97, P = 0.199). Furthermore, incidence of small-for-size syndrome detected in recipients of SFSG ranged from 0-11.4% in the included studies. CONCLUSION SFSG is associated with inferior medium-term but not long-term graft survival. Comparable long-term graft survival based on liver graft size shows that smaller grafts could be accepted for LDLT with appropriate flow modulatory measures. 17The Relationship Between Orthographic Awareness and Chinese Reading in Hong Kong’s Young CSL Learners显示文摘Purpose:This study investigates young Chinese as a second language(CSL)learners’Chinese character reading performance and its relationship with their orthographic awareness.There is a pressing need to gain a better understanding of Hong Kong’s ethnic minority students’CSL acquisition,so that more effective instruction can be provided.Design/Approach/Methods:A total of 157 Hong Kong ethnic minority CSL students in Grade 4 were evaluated using a range of assessments:orthographic awareness in identifying and utilizing character components,listening comprehension for vocabulary terms and short texts,and reading Chinese character lists with single-and two-character words.Findings:The students performed consistently across the two lists but made fewer errors when reading the two-character word list,most of which were orthographical.Multiple regression analysis showed that the students’orthographic awareness contributed significantly to their character reading.Originality/Value:The findings suggest that orthographic awareness can help ethnic minority CSL learners improve their Chinese character reading skills.Chinese classes provided for such students,and for CSL learners in general,should place greater focus on literacy training.Yu Ka Wong 2020ECNU Review of Education2020,3,4:2
18Role of C11-FDG dual-tracer PET-CT scan in metastatic screening of hepatocellular carcinoma-a cost-effectiveness analysis显示文摘Background:We aimed to identify predictive factors for positron emission tomography(PET)-detected hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)metastasis and a cost-effective approach to preoperative PET-computed tomography(CT)for detecting metastasis.Methods:Clinicopathological and survival data of HCC patients having PET-CT with 18F-fludeoxyglucose(FDG)and 11C-acetate(ACT)following contrast-enhanced CT/magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)for preoperative tumor staging were reviewed.Binary logistic regression was performed to identify predictive factors for PET-detected metastasis.A cost-benefit analysis model was built for the incurred costs and the impact of PET-CT findings on treatment strategy was studied.Results:Totally 152 patients were analyzed.Dual-tracer PET-CT detected metastasis in 17 patients(11%).By multivariate analysis,alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)≥400 ng/mL[relative risk(RR):4.30,95%confidence interval(CI):1.41-13.15,P=0.011]and bilobar disease(RR:3.94,95%CI:1.24-12.52,P=0.014)were independent predictive factors for PET-detected metastasis.PET-CT findings altered the treatment strategy for 12 patients(7.9%);three partial hepatectomies,eight episodes of transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)and one episode of ablation were avoided,with an estimated cost-saving of US$91,000,$150,000 and$10,600 respectively.Had the PET-CT been performed only for patients with AFP≥400 ng/mL or bilobar disease(n=74),metastasis would have been confirmed in 14 patients(18.9%),and the cost-saving per patient was estimated at US$1,070.Conclusions:Dual-tracer PET-CT is cost-effective and useful for preoperative HCC staging in patients with AFP≥400 ng/mL or bilobar disease.Its routine use in preoperative workup for all HCC patients is not recommended.Unilobar disease with AFP<400 ng/mL can achieve good negative predictive value for PET-detected metastasis.Screening patients with either factor can avoid unnecessary procedures and is thus cost-effective for preoperative HCC workup.Kevin K.W.Chu Albert C.Y.Chan Ka Wing Ma Wong Hoi She Wing Chiu Dai Kenneth S.H.Chok Tan To Cheung Chung Mau Lo 2021Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition2021,10,3:2
19Liver transplantation:would it be the best and last chance of cure for hepatocellular carcinoma with major venous invasion?显示文摘Background:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)with portal vein tumour thrombus(PVTT)signifies advanced disease,whether LT confers any survival superiority over resection remains uncertain.Methods:A propensity score matched(PSM)analysis of liver transplantation(LT)and liver resection(LR)for HCC with PVTT was performed.Results:A consecutive series of 88 patients who received either LT(10 DDLTs and 3 LDLTs)or LR(n=75)respectively were recruited.Before PSM,the LT group has a higher MELD score(17.3 vs.7.8,P<0.001),lower serum AFP levels(96 vs.2,164 ng/mL,P=0.017)and smaller tumour size(4 vs.10 cm,P<0.001).The 5-year overall survival for LT and LR were 55.4%and 15.9%respectively(P=0.007).After matching for serum AFP levels and tumour size,1-,3-and 5-year overall survival for LT were 81 ng/mL,3.9 cm,80%,70%and 70%and the corresponding rates for LR were 1,417 ng/mL,5.3 cm,51.8%,19,6%and 9.8%(P value=0.12,0.27 and 0.009 respectively).Conclusions:LT is associated with significantly better oncological outcomes in HCC patients with PVTT involving the lobar or segmental level.A modest expansion of selection criteria to include small HCC with segmental PVTT should be considered.Ka Wing Ma Albert Chi Yan Chan Kenneth Siu Ho Chok Wong Hoi She Tan To Cheung Wing Chiu Dai James Yan Yue Fung Chung Mau Lo 2021Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition2021,10,3:2
20Early-onset primary torsional dystonia in a 4-generation Chinese family with a mutation in the DYT1 gene显示文摘Primary torsion dystonia (PTD) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous movement disorder. At least thirteen different types of dystonia can be distinguished on a genetic basis.1 The DYT1 gene was first mapped by Ozelius et al in 1989.2 (Kramer et) al3 linked the same locus to PTD in 12 Ashkenazi Jewish families in 1990.
