2Earth surface processes and their effects on human behavior in monsoonal China during the Pleistocene-Holocene epochs显示文摘There is a wide diversity of landforms in China.The topography of three major terraces,decreasing in height stepwise from west to east,was formed by the early Miocene.With the commencement of the Great Northern Hemisphere Glaciations(GHGs)and the glacial-interglacial cycles in the Pleistocene,thick loess deposits accumulated in north China,and fluvial terraces were formed and lakes expanded and contracted in eastern and central China.The earliest evidence of hominins in China is dated to ~1.7 Ma;they occupied the monsoon-dominated region for a long interval,until the late Pleistocene,~50 ka.In this study,we investigated a large area rich in the relics and artifacts of early man.The results indicate that the early humans occupied riverine areas,especially medium-sized fluvial basins,and lake shores.Even in the relatively recent geological past,the occupation and abandonment of settlements were directly forced by the shifting of sand dune fields in the desert-loess transitional zone,which in turn was closely associated with variations in the monsoon climate and vegetation patterns.Our observations indicate that landforms were one of the main determinants of early human behavior,in that loess tableland,large alluvial plains,desert-Gobi areas,and the Tibetan Plateau,were not suitable environments for early human settlement.We infer that the early humans in China adapted their behavior to specific landforms and landform processes.The monsoon climate,which shapes the large-scale step-like pattern of fluvial landforms,promotes vegetation coverage and dominates soil formation,provides a crucial context for early human adaptation.The adaptation of early humans to earth surface processes in East Asia is investigated for the first time in this study.Future investigations will provide further information that will increase our understanding of the linkage between early human behavior and landform processes in East Asia.LU Huayu ZHUO Haixin ZHANG Wenchao WANG Shejiang ZHANG Hongyan SUN Xuefeng JIA Xin XU Zhiwei WANG Xianyan 2017Journal of Geographical Sciences2017,27,11:12
3Climatic and tectonic controls on the fluvial morphology of the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau (China)显示文摘The geomorphological evolution of the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau(NETP)could provide valuable information for reconstructing the tectonic movements of the region.And the considerable uplift and climatic changes at here,provide an opportunity for studying the impact of tectonic and monsoon climate on fluvial morphological development and sedimentary architecture of fluvial deposits.The development of peneplain-like surface and related landscape transition from basin filling to incision indicate an intense uplift event with morphological significance at around 10–17 Ma in the NETP.After that,incision into the peneplain was not continuous but a staircase of terraces,developed as a result of climatic influences.In spite of the generally persisting uplift of the whole region,the neighbouring tectonic blocks had different uplift rates,leading to a complicated fluvial response with accumulation terraces alternating with erosion terraces at a small spatial and temporal scale.The change in fluvial activity as a response to climatic impact is reflected in the general sedimentary sequence on the terraces from high-energy(braided)channel deposits(at full glacial)to lower-energy deposits of small channels(towards the end of the glacial),mostly separated by a rather sharp boundary from overlying flood-loams(at the glacial-interglacial transition)and overall soil formation(interglacial).Pronounced incision took place at the subsequent warm-cold transitions.In addition,it is hypothesized that in some strongly uplifted blocks energy thresholds could be crossed to allow terrace formation as a response to small climatic fluctuations(10~3–10~4 year timescale).Although studies of morpho-tectonic and geomorphological evolution of the NETP,improve understanding on the impacts of tectonic motions and monsoonal climate on fluvial processes,a number of aspects,such as the distribution and correlation of peneplain and the related morphological features,the extent and intensity of tectonic movements influencing the crossing of climatic thresholds,leading to terrace development,need to be studied further.WANG Xianyan Jef VANDENBERGHE LU Huayu Ronald VAN BALEN 2017Journal of Geographical Sciences2017,27,11:6

6Placenta-derived IL-32β activates neutrophils to promote preeclampsia development显示文摘Immune activation at the maternal-fetal interface is a main pathogenic factor of preeclampsia(PE).Neutrophils(PMNs)are activated in PE patients,but the mechanism and consequences of PMN activation need to be further explored.Here,we demonstrated that interleukin-32(IL-32)expression was significantly upregulated in syncytiotrophoblasts(STBs)and that IL-32β was the major isoform with increased expression in the placenta of severe PE(sPE)patients.Furthermore,the level of IL-32 expression in the placenta was correlated with its level in the serum of sPE patients,indicating that IL-32 in the serum is derived mainly from the placenta.Then,in vitro experiments showed that IL-32β could highly activate PMNs and that these IL-32β-activated PMNs were better able to adhere to endothelial cells(HUVECs)and enhance the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCAM-1)and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1)in HUVECs,which could be reversed by preincubation with the NADPH oxidase inhibitor VAS 2870.In addition,we showed that IL-32β mainly activated PMNs by binding to proteinase 3.Finally,IL-32β administration induced a PE-like phenotype in a pregnant mouse model.This study provides evidence of the involvement of IL-32β in the pathogenesis of PE.Dan Liu Qiang Li Hailin Ding Guangfeng Zhao Zhiyin Wang Chenrui Cao Yimin Dai Mingming Zheng Xiangyu Zhu Qianwen Wu Ya Wang Honglei Duan Huirong Tang Xianyan Lu Yayi Hou Yali Hu 2021Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,4:2
7Drainage evolution in intermontane basins at the Qinling-Daba Mountains显示文摘River capture is of great significance to landform evolution and hominine migration.In the Qinling-Daba Mountains,there is a viewpoint that Jialing River captured Hanjiang River,but this is still controversial.In this paper,we discuss the drainage evolution processes in intermountain basins at the Qinling-Daba Mountains based on a combination of detrital zircon UPb geochronology and geomorphic indexes.We suggest that the Hanjiang River gradually captured the Jialing River from east to west,accompanied by the evolution of the ancient Yangtze River.In terms of geomorphic evidences,wide valleys did not match with discharge,and a series of wind gaps developed in the Shiquan-Ankang basin.In addition,the valley shapes and width-toheight ratios(Vf)indicate two possible rapid incisions.The hypsometric integrals(HI)reflect that the landform gradually changes from the old stage to the youth stage from west to east.Theχvalues show that the drainage divide is moving to the side of the Yuehe River,and the Yuehe River is gradually shrinking.According to the sedimentary records,the zircon U-Pb age distributions indicate the provenance change.The high-altitude terraces show three age peaks(200–250,400–505,and 700–900 Ma),with the dominant Indosinian age peak(200–250 Ma),while the modern fluvial sediments only show a single peak of Jinning(700–900 Ma).These data show that there are two major river captures:(1)The ancient Hanjiang River cut through the regional compression ridge,and then captured the Hanzhong Basin river system(a part of the ancient Jialing river system)from east to west,and(2)The southern tributary captured the trunk with the uplift of the divide in the Shiquan-Ankang Basin,forming the modern drainage pattern in the upper Hanjiang River.The activities of the regional strike-slip fault,and the associated compression uplift played a key role in the river captures,the drainage evolution,and related landforms in the Shiquan-Ankang basin.In addition,it is shown that the evolution of the upper tributary basins lagged behind the response of the trunk channel to the tectonic activities and river captures.The interconnected wide valleys caused by river capture may have provided convenient geomorphological conditions for human migration into the Qinling-Daba Mountains along those river valleys.Wanting XIE Xianyan WANG Hanzhi ZHANG Quanyu LIU Shejiang WANG Huayu LU 2021Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,11:1
8Bioceramic scaffolds with triply periodic minimal surface architectures guide early-stage bone regeneration显示文摘The pore architecture of porous scaffolds is a critical factor in osteogenesis,but it is a challenge to precisely configure strut-based scaffolds because of the inevitable filament corner and pore geometry deformation.This study provides a pore architecture tailoring strategy in which a series of Mg-doped wollastonite scaffolds with fully interconnected pore networks and curved pore architectures called triply periodic minimal surfaces(TPMS),which are similar to cancellous bone,are fabricated by a digital light processing technique.The sheet-TPMS pore geometries(s-Diamond,s-Gyroid)contribute to a 3‒4-fold higher initial compressive strength and 20%-40%faster Mg-ion-release rate compared to the other-TPMS scaffolds,including Diamond,Gyroid,and the Schoen’s I-graph-Wrapped Package(IWP)in vitro.However,we found that Gyroid and Diamond pore scaffolds can significantly induce osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs).Analyses of rabbit experiments in vivo show that the regeneration of bone tissue in the sheet-TPMS pore geometry is delayed;on the other hand,Diamond and Gyroid pore scaffolds show notable neo-bone tissue in the center pore regions during the early stages(3-5 weeks)and the bone tissue uniformly fills the whole porous network after 7 weeks.Collectively,the design methods in this study provide an important perspective for optimizing the pore architecture design of bioceramic scaffolds to accelerate the rate of osteogenesis and promote the clinical translation of bioceramic scaffolds in the repair of bone defects.Miaoda Shen Yifan Li Fengling Lu Yahui Gou Cheng Zhong Shukun He Chenchen Zhao Guojing Yang Lei Zhang Xianyan Yang Zhongru Gou Sanzhong Xu 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,7:1

10The impacts of base level and lithology on fluvial geomorphic evolution at the tectonically active Laohu and Hasi Mountains,northeastern Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Previous researches had emphasized tectonic impacts on the fluvial system at the tectonically active areas,while the effects of lithology and local base level change have received relatively rare attention.Here we investigated fluvial landforms at different spatial scales,focusing on knickpoints and channel network reorganization from an area affected by the Haiyuan Fault in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau.The geomorphic indices,i.e.,drainage pattern andχanomalies,were calculated and investigated.The results show that two regional radial drainages formed around the Laohu and Hasi Mountains.Within the interior of the radial drainage,tributaries from the southeast side of the Laohu Mountain experienced near 180°direction change.We interpret this as the gradual drainage capture originating from the height difference(~190 m)of the local base level between the two catchments.Some tributaries from the Hasi Mountain show alternating gorges and broad valleys controlled by lithology.Besides,tectonic uplift and the lowering of base level(from the incision of the Yellow River)triggered an autogenic positivefeedback transition from parallel to dendritic drainage patterns.These observations suggest that base level change and lithology play a crucial role in landscape evolution,even in a tectonically active region.Zhengchen LI Xianyan WANG Yang YU Huiping ZHANG Qi SU Xiaodong MIAO Huayu LU 2021Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,6:0
11Diverse Climatic and Anthropogenic Impacts on Desertification in the Middle Reaches of Yarlung Zangbo River Catchment on the Tibetan Plateau显示文摘The unique desertification processes occurring under the Alpine climate and ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau could provide critical clues to the natural and anthropogenic impacts on desertification.This study used the Landsat data to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of desertification from 1990 to 2020 in two areas(Shannan and Mainling),within the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin.The results show not only distinct spatial patterns but also various temporal changes of desertification.In Shannan,aeolian sand was distributed over wide areas from valley floor to mountain slope,while in Mainling,it is distributed sporadically at the footslope.The aeolian sandy land initially expanded before undergoing long-term shrinkage in Shannan.While in Mainling,it steadily expanded followed by a rapid decrease.These changes are attributed to both climate change and human activites.The increase in temperature causes desertification expansion in Shannan,while favorable climate conditions coupled with decreasing human activity promoted desertification reversal.However,both the expansion and shrinkage of desertification were sensitive to human activity in Mainling.This highlights the diverse responses of desertification to natural and anthropogenic impacts on different backgrounds of climatic and vegetation coverage.A threshold of climatic conditions may control the dominance factors in desertification,shifting from natural to anthropogenic elements.Qi Yu Xianyan Wang Zhiyong Han Xiaodong Miao Huayu Lu 2023Journal of Earth Science2023,34,6:0
12Application of River Longitudinal Profile Morphometrics to Reveal the Uplift of Lushan Mountain显示文摘The stream power model was applied to Lushan Mt. in South China in order to verify its capability of interpreting the uplift of a small block mountain. On a log-log plot, the longitudinal profiles of 9 rivers derived from a 30 m DEM exhibit primary characteristics similar to those derived from a 5 m DEM; however, the 5 m DEM clearly reveals more minor knickpoints, and the positions of knickpoints are pinpointed more accurately. All of the studied rivers on the block mountain are in a transient state due to geological perturbations. Some of them exhibit two segments in steady state separated by a slopebreak knickpoint. Such rivers generally develop in a longitudinal valley, which are less perturbed by substrate inhomogeneities. The similar heights of the slope-break knickpoints and the similar uplift rate indicated by the k_(sn) values demonstrate an almost simultaneous headward erosion induced by the fall in base level. This modelling result is consistent with the mode of formation of this particular block mountain.
