Mega-shoaling in carbonate platform of the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation,Sichuan Basin, Southwest China显示文摘Shoaling is a common type of sedimentation in the evolution of carbonate platform, and commonly has poor continuity. This paper presents a newly discovered and rare type of shoaling,i.e.,mega-shoaling in nearly basin scale, which is developed in the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation of the Sichuan Basin, southwest China.During the Leikoupo time, the studied Sichuan Basin experienced hot and dry climate conditions and developed a carbonate platform within a restricted epicontinental sea.In B sub-layer of the Lei-1-1 sub-member of the Leikoupo Formation a series of grainstones of shoal facies accumulated throughout almost the entire basin, thereby generating features associated with basin-scale mega-shoaling.By detailed core examination and microscopic observation of thin sections,it is shown that the lithology of this set of grainstones is dominated by doloarenite(calcarenite)followed by oolitic dolomite(limestone). In addition,it contains three types of sedimentary sequences characterized by upward-coarsening and upward-shallowing as the followings:restricted lagoon to platform interior beach;restricted lagoon to platform interior beach and to platform flat;and tidal flat to peritidal beach.Subsequently,a multicyclic stratigraphic division and correlation revealed that this set of grainstones can be well traced and compared horizontally, and is generally isochronous. In addition,a template for logging facies, established based on core calibrations and logging data, was employed to analyze the 235 wells in the basin. The results demonstrate the shoal grainstones to be 10–40 m thick with a15×104km2continuous distribution area. These findings indicate that the carbonate platform developed mega-shoals within a short period of time. The genesis of such a mega-shoaling was investigated by focusing on various shoaling conditions, such as paleo-tectonics,paleo-geomorphology,paleo-climate,sea-level changes, and palaeo-hydrodynamics.A specific combination of independent geological factors creates beneficial geomorphologic conditions for the mega-shoaling including a quiescent paleo-tectonic environment, relatively flat paleo-geomorphology and evaporites filling up and leveling off.In addition,a stably settling carbonate platform underwent sea-level fluctuations through swift transgressions and protracted regressions, which is not only conducive to continuous, multicyclic and superimposed vertical development of grain beaches but also beneficial for the horizontal migration, coalescence and superimposition of individual grain beaches. As a consequence,large-scale and continuously-distributed grain beach sedimentation emerges and mega-shoals develop. | TAN XiuCheng LI Ling LIU Hong CAO Jian WU XiaoQing ZHOU SuYan SHI XueWen | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,3: | 12
Comparison of basic features and origins of oolitic shoal reservoirs between carbonate platform interior and platform margin locations in the Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation of the Sichuan Basin, southwest China显示文摘The oolitic shoal reservoirs of the Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation carbonates in the Sichuan Basin of southwest China are an important target for gas exploration in the basin.Their occurrence, like other cases worldwide, can be divided into two locations in general,i.e.,platform interior and platform margin locations.Their differences of reservoir features and origins, however, have not been investigated comprehensively due to different exploration degrees. This issue is addressed in this paper,to provide basic data and information for the basin's hydrocarbon exploration and for the study of carbonate platform sedimentology and reservoir geology worldwide. We compared the features of these two types of reservoirs in detail, including the depositional and diagenetic features, pore types and petrophysical features.Based on the comparison, the origin of the reservoirs was further discussed. It is shown that the reservoirs in platform interior and platform margin locations differ significantly. The interior carbonates were deposited in moderate to high energy settings and the dominant lithologic type was limestone, which was weakly compacted and intensely cemented and has undergone meteoric dissolution.Pore types include intragranular dissolution and moldic pores, with low porosities(<6%) and low permeabilities(<0.1 mD).By contrast, the platform margin carbonates were deposited in relatively high energy settings and mainly consisted of dolostones with some limestones. The rocks were strongly compacted but incompletely cemented. As a result, some primary intergranular pores were preserved. Both meteoric solution and burial solution have taken place. There are various types of pore spaces including intergranular and intercrystalline solution pores and residual intergranular pores. This type of reservoir generally has better petrophysical properties(>9% porosity and >0.1 mD permeability) and pore-throat structures than the interior reservoirs. These differences were influenced by both primary depositional features and secondary diagenesis. For the interior carbonate reservoirs, early meteoric dissolution, weak compaction and strong cementation are important controlling factors.By contrast, the factors controlling the formation of the margin carbonate reservoirs mainly include dolomitization, preservation of primary pores and burial dissolution. | Tan Xiucheng Zhao Luzi Luo Bing Jiang Xingfu Cao Jian Liu Hong Li Ling Wu Xingbo Nie Yong | 2012 | Petroleum Science2012,9,4: | 9
Lithofacies paleogeography mapping and reservoir prediction in tight sandstone strata: A case study from central Sichuan Basin, China显示文摘Sand-rich tight sandstone reservoirs are potential areas for oil and gas exploration. However, the high ratio of sandstone thickness to that of the strata in the formation poses many challenges and uncertainties to traditional lithofacies paleogeography mapping. Therefore, the prediction of reservoir sweet spots has remained problematic in the field of petroleum exploration. This study provides new insight into resolving this problem, based on the analyses of depositional characteristics of a typical modern sand-rich formation in a shallow braided river delta of the central Sichuan Basin, China. The varieties of sand-rich strata in the braided river delta environment include primary braided channels, secondary distributary channels and the distribution of sediments is controlled by the successive superposed strata deposited in paleogeomorphic valleys. The primary distributary channels have stronger hydrodynamic forces with higher proportions of coarse sand deposits than the secondary distributary channels. Therefore, lithofacies paleogeography mapping is controlled by the geomorphology, valley locations, and the migration of channels. We reconstructed the paleogeomorphology and valley systems that existed prior to the deposition of the Xujiahe Formation. Following this, rock-electro identification model for coarse skeletal sand bodies was constructed based on coring data. The results suggest that skeletal sand bodies in primary distributary channels occur mainly in the valleys and low-lying areas, whereas secondary distributary channels and fine deposits generally occur in the highland areas. The thickness distribution of skeletal sand bodies and lithofacies paleogeography map indicate a positive correlation in primary distributary channels and reservoir thickness. A significant correlation exists between different sedimentary facies and petrophysical properties. In addition, the degree of reservoir development in different sedimentary facies indicates that the mapping method reliably predicts the distribution of sweet spots. The application and understanding of the mapping method provide a reference for exploring tight sandstone reservoirs on a regional basis. | Yuan Zhong Lu Zhou Xiucheng Tan Chengbo Lian Hong Liu Jijia Liao Guang Hu Mingjie Liu Jian Cao | 2017 | Geoscience Frontiers2017,8,5: | 9
Occurrence and conceptual sedimentary model of Cambrian gypsum-bearing evaporites in the Sichuan Basin, SW China显示文摘During the Cambrian, gypsum-bearing evaporites formed in the Sichuan Basin, SW China. These rocks are important for oil and gas sealing, but details of their distribution and origin are not well established. This study examines the regional distribution and origin of the gypsum-bearing evaporites using a comprehensive analysis of drilling data from 34 wells, 5 measured cross-sections in the basin and surrounding area, and 96 maps of area-survey data. Results show that in the stratigraphic succession, the gypsum-bearing evaporites occur mainly in the Lower Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation, the Middle Cambrian Douposi Formation, and the Middle-Upper Cambrian Xixiangchi Group. Geographically, the rocks are found mainly in the southeastern part of the basin, and the distribution of deposits shows an overall SW-NE trend. The sedimentary environments for evaporite formation were evaporative lagoon and inter-platform basin in a platform setting. Gypsum was generated by the underwater concentration of sea water in a strongly evaporative environment. Both an evaporative restricted platform and a mixeddeposition restricted platform model appear to be applicable to the development of gypsum in the Sichuan Basin. The gypsum-bearing evaporites with the best sealing capacity are located mostly in the southeastern part of the basin. These constraints can be applied directly to regional exploration, and have implications for the regional paleogeography and paleoclimate. | Hong Liu Xiucheng Tan Yonghao Li Jian Cao Bin Luo | 2018 | Geoscience Frontiers2018,9,4: | 8

Eogenetic Karst in Interbedded Carbonates and Evaporites and Its Impact on Hydrocarbon Reservoir: A New Case from Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation in Sichuan Basin, Southwest China显示文摘Karst in interbedded carbonates and evaporites has been reported to have important and complex impacts on reservoir. It is significant for exploration and karst geology. Here, we report such a new case from Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation of Sichuan Basin, Southwest China. Stratigraphic incompleteness and the occurrence of unconformity provide evidence for the presence of eogenetic karst. Under the impact of this eogenetic karst, residual weathered and solution-collapse breccia, solution pores and silicification and dedolomitization have been observed. Classic stratigraphic zonation of karst is not readily distinguishable, which is ascribed to the stratigraphic collapse of carbonate rocks resulting from the dissolution of evaporites by lateral subsurface fluid flow. In terms of impact on reservoir quality, karst can generally improve the initial physical property of the porous layers in theory. However, subsurface fluid flow dissolved the evarporitic beds and facilitated the collapse of overlying strata. As a consequence, the lateral continuity of the reservoirs would be destroyed, and relatively high-quality reservoirs can only be developed with little collapse of overlying strata, reflecting reservoir heterogeneities. This may be a general feature of reservoir formation under the impact of karst in interbedded carbonates and evaporites. | Hong Liu Xiucheng Tan Ling Li Xiong Ding Jian Cao Guang Yang Teng Ma | 2019 | Journal of Earth Science2019,30,5: | 5

Characteristics and significance of the penecontemporaneous karst in lacustrine carbonate, Da'anzhai Member, Lower Jurassic, Beibei area, eastern Sichuan Basin显示文摘There are few reports about the penecontemporaneous karst of the lacustrine carbonate of Da'anzhai Member which developed on the top of Lower Jurassic Ziliujing Formation, eastern Sichuan Basin.Based on the analysis of the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of Heping Reservoir section in Beibei area,It is discovered that the penecontemporaneous karst in the lacustrine carbonate,Da'anzhai Member, and its characters as follows:(1)The dissolved fractures and karrens are common, which have been filled with vadose silts, bioclasts, terrigenous quartzes, crystal and intergrown calcites;(2)The penecontemporaneous karstification mainly occurs in the micrites and shell limestones of the middle and upper part of the shallowing-upward sequence, and the desiccation cracks occur in some shallowing-upward sequences;(3)Three meteoric-water diagenetic lenses are identified in this section.By further study we also find the factures, stylolite and burial dissolution pores occur along the karst system(tubes, conduits and caves of the karst). And the asphalt not only fills the stylolites and fractures, but also is mixed with the vadose silt in the karst system, although the pore space formed by penecontemporaneous karstification is filled with vadose material and cements. Therefore it is concluded that the development and modification of the tight lacustrine carbonate reservoir of Da'anzhai Member,to some extent, are relevant with the penecontemporaneous karstification, and the penecontemporaneous karst reservoir may develop in the buried Da'anzhai carbonate of the basin. | Chengpeng Su Xiucheng Tan Kailan Shi Juan Zou Feifan Lu Sicong Luo Hao Tang Xinyu Zhang | 2017 | Petroleum2017,3,3: | 5
Hydrocarbon origin and reservoir forming model research of Longwangmiao Formation,Moxi-Gaoshiti area,Sichuan Basin显示文摘This paper focuses on the Longwangmiao gas reservoir in Moxi-Gaoshiti area,Sichuan Basin.Starting from the tectonic evolution perspective, though comparing biological marker compound and analyzing fluid inclusions, the oil&gas origin and accumulation evolution of Longwangmiao Formation are systematic studied with reference to the burial-thermal evolution of single well geological history in the study area.It is suggested that the oil&gas reservoir is generally characterized by early accumulation,multi-stage filling, late cracking and later adjustment. The oil and gas were mainly sourced from lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation, partly from the Permian source rock.During the geological period,3 major oil&gas fillings occurred in the Longwangmiao Formation, namely Caledonian-Hercynian filling that was small in scale and produced the first phase of paleo-oil reservoir that soon destroyed by Caledonian movement uplift,large-scale Permian filling that gave rise to the second-phase of paleo-oil reservoir and the Triassic-Jurassic filling that enriched the second phase of paleo-oil reservoir. Finally, the paleo-oil reservoir experienced an in-situ cracking during the cretaceous period that gave rise to a natural gas reservoir and left behind carbonaceous bitumen and oily bitumen in the holes of the Longwangmiao Formation. | Mindong Jin Jian Cao Chuanhua Shi Wei Zeng Cheng Shen Kailan Shi Xueying Cheng Xiucheng Tan | 2016 | Petroleum2016,2,2: | 2
The reservoir characteristics research of Devonian Jinbaoshi Formation,Northwest Sichuan Basin,SW China显示文摘A great breakthrough was achieved on the Middle Devonian's oil-gas exploration in the Longmenshan area in northwestern Sichuan. However, only the Guanwushan Formation was researched in detail. The underlying formation-Jinbaoshi Formation as a set of the potential well reservoir and its reservoir characteristics have not been discussed.Based on the section's fine description, thin section analysis, and core borehole logging, combined with petrophysical analysis, the reservoir characteristics, controlling factors, and evolution process of the Jinbaoshi Formation reservoir in the Longmenshan area are deeply studied in this paper. The results showed that the Jinbaoshi Formation has developed a set of sand-shale interbedding deposit of terrigenous clastic and carbonate rocks. The reservoir lithology is mainly quartz sandstone and calcareous quartz sandstone. The quartz sandstone reservoir has good physical properties, but the calcareous quartz sandstone has the characteristics of strong heterogeneity, low porosity, and permeability.Residual intergranular pores are mainly developed in the reservoir space. And the development of intercrystalline pores and intergranular dissolved pores can also be seen, but the development frequency is low,and the scale is small.Among them, the Devonian Jinbaoshi Formation quartz sandstone's average porosity is about 8%,and the highest is 18.43%.The main diagenesis types of the Jinbaoshi Formation are compaction, recrystalization, and dissolution.Compaction is the main reason for the destruction of original pores, and dissolution is the main driving force for later porosity and permeability improvement.Rock fragments, calcareous silty clasts, and bioclastic grains are the main dissolution objects. The formation of intergranular dissolved pores significantly improves the physical properties of the reservoir. Therefore, the reservoir development of the Jinbaoshi Formation is mainly controlled both by favourable sedimentary facies and diagenesis.Quartz sandstone and calcareous sandstone of the Jinbaoshi Formation were controlled by early sedimentary facies in the syngenetic rock stage and developed more early intergranular pores;in the early diagenesis stage,compaction-pressure solution and cementation resulted in residual intergranular pores. In the middle-late diagenesis stage, the calcareous cement is dissolved, and more pores were formed. | Shixuan Zhang Xiucheng Tan Hao Tang Cheng Huang Zhimin Jin Minglong Li Yuwei Shen | 2022 | Petroleum2022,8,3: | 1
Reconstruction and petroleum geological significance of lithofacies paleogeography and paleokarst geomorphology of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in northwestern Sichuan Basin,SW China显示文摘Based on analysis of outcrop, drilling, logging and seismic data, and geotectonic background, the lithofacies paleogeography and paleokarst geomorphology of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in the northwestern Sichuan Basin were reconstructed, and the petroleum geological significance of the lithofacies paleogeography and paleokarst geomorphology were discussed. The Maokou Formation is divided into 3 long-term cycles, namely LSCl,LSC2 and LSC3,which correspond to the Member 1,Member 2 and Member 3 of the Maokou Formation, respectively.Controlled by the extensional structure caused by opening of the Mianlue Ocean in the north margin of the upper Yangtze blocks and basement faults produced by mantle plume uplifting, the area had tectonic differentiation in NWW and NE,and sedimentary basement took on episodic settlement from north to south,as a result, the sedimentary systems of Member 1 to Member 3 gradually evolved from carbonate platform to platform-slope-continental shelf.According to the residual thickness, paleokarst geomorphologic units such as karst highland, karst slope and karst depression at different stages were reconstructed. The karst geomorphological units were developed successively on the basis of sedimentary geomorphology.Sedimentary facies and paleokarst geomorphology are of great significance for oil and gas accumulation. The Maokou Formation in northwestern Sichuan has two kinds of most favorable reservoir zone combinations:high energy grain shoal and karst monadnock, platform margin slope and karst slope.Based on this understanding, the planar distribution of the two kinds of reservoir zones were predicted by overlapping the favorable reservoir facies belt with paleokarst geomorphology. The study results provide a new idea and reference for the exploration deployment of the Middle Permian Maokou Formation in the Sichuan Basin. | ZHONG Yuan YANG Yueming WEN Long LUO Bing XIAO Di LI Minglong CHEN Cong ZHAO Like LU Feifan TAN Xiucheng | 2021 | Petroleum Exploration and Development2021,48,1: | 1

Impact of pyrite on shale gas enrichment——a case study of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in southeast Sichuan Basin显示文摘Pyrite is one of the important components of shale and plays a crucial role in shale gas enrichment. However, currently there are just a few studies on this subject matter. Therefore, the characteristics of pyrite in organic-rich shale section of the Longmaxi Formation and its impact on shale gas enrichment was studied in this paper by using outcrops, drilling cores, thin sections and test data.Result shows that pyrite occurred in different forms(macro-micro scale)in the Longmaxi Formation in the southeast Sichuan Basin. The formation and content of pyrite has a close relation with TOC content.Pyrite may catalyze the hydrocarbon generation of organic matter.Interparticle pores within the pyrite framboids and organic matter pores in the pyrite-organic matter complex are welldeveloped in the Longmaxi Shale, which serves as a major reservoir space for shale gas.Pyrite can promote shale gas enrichment by absorbing shale gas on its surface and preserving free gas in the interparticle pores and organic matter pores. In addition,as a kind of brittle mineral, pyrite can improve the brittleness of shale reservoir and increase the micro-nano pore system in shale reservoir, thereby improving the transmission performance of shale reservoir and boosting shale gas recovery. | Xin CHEN Lei CHEN Xiucheng TAN Shu JIANG Chao WANG | 2021 | Frontiers of Earth Science2021,15,2: | 0

Sequence-lithofacies paleogeographic characteristics and petroleum geological significance of Lower Permian Qixia Stage in Sichuan Basin and its adjacent areas,SW China显示文摘Through the analysis of logging, field outcrops, cores and geochemical data, and based on the study of the relationships between sea level changes, sequence filling,paleo-geomorphy and lithofacies, the sequence lithofacies paleo-geography and evolution process of the Lower Permian Liangshan-Qixia Formation(Qixia Stage for short)in Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas are restored. The Qixia Stage can be divided into three third-order sequences,in which SQ0,SQ1 and SQ2 are developed in the depression area, and SQ1 and SQ2 are only developed in other areas. The paleo-geomorphy reflected by the thickness of each sequence indicates that before the deposition of the Qixia Stage in the Early Permian, the areas surrounding the Sichuan Basin are characterized by“four uplifts and four depressions”,namely, four paleo-uplifts/paleo-lands of Kangdian,Hannan,Shennongjia and Xuefeng Mountain, and four depressions of Chengdu-Mianyang,Kangdian front,Jiangkou and Yichang;while the interior of the basin is characterized by“secondary uplifts, secondary depressions and alternating convex-concave”.SQ2 is the main shoal forming period of the Qixia Formation, and the high-energy mound shoal facies mainly developed in the highs of sedimentary paleo-geomorphy and the relative slope break zones. The distribution of dolomitic reservoirs(dolomite, limy dolomite and dolomitic limestone)has a good correlation with the sedimentary geomorphic highs and slope break zones. The favorable mound-shoal and dolomitic reservoirs are distributed around depressions at platform-margin and along highs and around sags in the basin. It is pointed out that the platform-margin area in western Sichuan Basin is still the key area for exploration at present;while areas around Chengdu-Mianyang depression and Guangwang secondary depression inside the platform and areas around sags in central Sichuan-southern Sichuan are favorable exploration areas for dolomitic reservoirs of the Qixia Formation in the next step. | LI Minglong TAN Xiucheng YANG Yu NI Hualing LUO Bing WEN Long ZHANG Benjian XIAO Di XU Qiang | 2022 | Petroleum Exploration and Development2022,49,6: | 0

The sedimentary facies characteristics and lithofacies palaeogeography during Middle-Late Cambrian,Sichuan Basin and adjacent area显示文摘Combined with the regional strata filling characteristics of Middle-Upper Cambrian, the present paper conducts a systematic research on sedimentary facies in the basin and its peripheral area by utilizing 164 field outcrops and drilling and coring data.Further, the method of“multi-factor comprehensive synthesis based on single-factor analysis”was employed to investigate the sedimentary facies and palaeogeography of the study area and establish the sedimentary facies model.Stratigraphic reveals that the study area represents the pattern of thin-northwest and thicksoutheast by stretching northeast-southwest.Within the present basin, the pattern of“one thin and two thick”predominates, while outside the basin“four thin and three thick”filling feature was found.Sedimentary facies shows that the study area was featured by rimmed carbonate platform.Specifically, carbonate platform, slope and northeastern corner Qinling paleooceanic Basin and southeastern corner Jiangnan Bain was identified from the west to the east. The carbonate platform contains restricted platform,evaporation-restricted platform,semi-restricted platform and the platform margin.Single factor analysis and lithofacies palaeogeographic characteristics manifests that during Middle-Late Cambrian, the western Old land evolved into peneplain stage, and that the eastern and southwestern sub-sags remained connected to the open-sea to some extent. At the time, the shllow seawater circulation was relatively restricted, while the ancient seabed tended to be flat and evaporation characteristics significantly diminished.Secondary sea-level fluctuation intensively influenced the development of scaled grain beach. It is suggested that tide marginal beach, intraplatform shoal subfacies zone, along with Shiqian-SangZhi in southeast and Zhenba-Xinshan in northeast platform-margin beach subfacies zone to be preferable targets for the favorable reservoir facies zone and potential oil and gas reservoir area. | Feifan Lu Xiucheng Tan Teng Ma Ling Li Aiwei Zhao Chengpeng Su Jingqing Wu Haitao Hong | 2017 | Petroleum2017,3,2: | 0
Sedimentary architecture and distribution of intra-platform shoal in sequence framework of Permian Changxing Formation in central Sichuan Basin,SW China显示文摘Based on the comprehensive analysis of core, thin section, logging and seismic data, this study carried out the identification and comparison of Permian Changxing Formation sequences, clarified the typical sedimentary architectures of intra-platform shoal, investigated the vertical and horizontal development and distribution of intra-platform shoal in each sequence, and thus established the sedimentary evolution model of shoal body. The study results are reflected in four aspects.First, there are two complete third-order sequences(SQ1 and SQ2) in Changxing Formation in central Sichuan Basin. SQ1 is generally thick in the north and thin in the south, and SQ2 shows a thickness differentiation trend of “two thicknesses and three thinnesses”. Second, the Changxing Formation in central Sichuan Basin mainly develops intra-platform shoal, inter-shoal sea and intra-platform depression subfacies. In the vertical direction, the intra-platform shoal mainly presents two typical sedimentary sequences: stable superposed and high-frequency interbedded. Third, the stable superimposed sedimentary sequence is developed in the shoal belt at the edge of intra-platform depression, which is composed of two shoal-forming periods and located in the highstand systems tracts(HSTs) of SQ1 and SQ2. The high-frequency interbedded sedimentary sequence is developed in the southern shoal belt of intra-platform depression, which is composed of four shoal-forming periods and mainly located in the HST of SQ2. Fourth, during the SQ1 deposition, the intra-platform shoal was mainly developed at the edge of the intra-platform depression on the north side of the study area, and the inter-shoal sea subfacies was mainly developed on the south side. During the SQ2 deposition, the intra-platform shoal was widely developed in the area, forming two nearly parallel intra-platform shoal belts. The study results provide direction and ideas for exploration of Changxing Formation intra-platform shoal reservoirs in central Sichuan Basin. | WANG Dong LIU Hong TANG Song BAI Jinhao ZHOU Gang LI Zhengyong LIANG Feng TAN Xiucheng GENG Chao YANG Ying | 2023 | Petroleum Exploration and Development2023,50,2: | 0
