2On the combined effect of soil fertility and topography on tree growth in subtropical forest ecosystems—a study from SE China显示文摘Aims The aim of our research was to understand small-scale effects of topography and soil fertility on tree growth in a forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning(BEF)experiment in subtropical SE China.Methods Geomorphometric terrain analyses were carried out at a spatial resolution of 5×5 m.Soil samples of different depth increments and data on tree height were collected from a total of 566 plots(667 m2 each).The soils were analyzed for carbon(soil organic carbon[SOC]),nitrogen,acidity,cation exchange capacity(CEC),exchangeable cations and base saturation as soil fertility attributes.All plots were classified into geomorphological units.Analyses of variance and linear regressions were applied to all terrain,soil fertility and tree growth attributes.Important Findings In general,young and shallow soils and relatively small differences in stable soil properties suggest that soil erosion has truncated the soils to a large extent over the whole area of the experiment.This explains the concurrently increasing CEC and SOC stocks downslope,in hollows and in valleys.However,colluvial,carbon-rich sediments are missing widely due to the convexity of the footslopes caused by uplift and removal of eroded sediments by adjacent waterways.The results showed that soil fertility is mainly influenced by topography.Monte-Carlo flow accumulation(MCCA),curvature,slope and aspect significantly affected soil fertility.Furthermore,soil fertility was affected by the different geomorphological positions on the experimental sites with ridge and spur positions showing lower exchangeable base cation contents,especially potassium(K),due to leaching.This geomorphological effect of soil fertility is most pronounced in the topsoil and decreases when considering the subsoil down to 50 cm depth.Few soil fertility attributes affect tree height after 1-2 years of growth,among which C stocks proved to be most important while pH_(KCl)and CEC only played minor roles.Nevertheless,soil acidity and a high proportion of Al on the exchange complex affected tree height even after only 1-2 years growth.Hence,our study showed that forest nutrition is coupled to a recycling of litter nutrients,and does not only depend on subsequent supply of nutrients from the mineral soil.Besides soil fertility,topography affected tree height.We found that especially MCCA as indicator of water availability affected tree growth at small-scale,as well as aspect.Overall,our synthesis on the interrelation between fertility,topography and tree growth in a subtropical forest ecosystem in SE China showed that topographic heterogeneity lead to ecological gradients across geomorphological positions.In this respect,small-scale soil-plant interactions in a young forest can serve as a driver for the future development of vegetation and biodiversity control on soil fertility.In addition,it shows that terrain attributes should be accounted for in ecological research.Thomas Scholten Philipp Goebes Peter Kühn Steffen Seitz Thorsten Assmann Jürgen Bauhus Helge Bruelheide Francois Buscot Alexandra Erfmeier Markus Fischer Werner Härdtle Jin-Sheng He Keping Ma Pascal A.Niklaus Michael Scherer-Lorenzen Bernhard Schmid Xuezheng Shi Zhengshan Song Goddert von Oheimb Christian Wirth Tesfaye Wubet Karsten Schmidt 2017Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1:22
3Upregulation of Nogo receptor expression induces apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells in diabetic rats显示文摘The Nogo receptor is an essential factor for neuronal apoptosis, but the changes in Nogo receptor expression in the retina and the effects of the Nogo receptor on retinal ganglion cell apoptosis in diabetes mellitus remain unclear. We found that Nogo receptor expression was mainly visible in retinal ganglion cells of a rat model of diabetes mellitus induced by streptozotocin. At 12 weeks after onset of diabetes mellitus, Nogo receptor and Rho kinase expression significantly increased in the retina, and retinal ganglion cell apoptosis was apparent. When RNA interference was used to suppress Nogo receptor expression in rat retina, Rho kinase expression was obviously inhibited, and retinal ganglion cell apoptosis was evidently reduced in rats with diabetes mellitus. 4The Suitability of Using Leaf Area Index to Quantify Soil Loss under Vegetation Cover显示文摘Soil erosion by water under forest cover is a serious problem in southern China.A comparative study was carried out on the use of leaf area index(LAI) and vegetation fractional coverage(VFC) in quantifying soil loss under vegetation cover.Five types of vegetation with varied LAI and VFC under field conditions were exposed to two rainfall rates(40 mm h-1 and 54 mm h-1) using a portable rainfall simulator.Runoff rate,sediment concentration and soil loss rate were measured at relatively runoff stable state.Significant negative exponential relationship(p < 0.05,R2 = 0.83) and linear relationship(p < 0.05,R2 = 0.84) were obtained between LAI and sediment concentration,while no significant relationship existed between VFC and sediment concentration.The mechanism by which vegetation canopy prevents soil loss was by reducing rainfall kinetic energy and sediment concentration.LAI could better quantify such a role than VFC.However,neither LAI nor VFC could explain runoff rate or soil loss rate.Caution must be taken when using LAI to quantify the role of certain vegetation in soil and water conservation.ZHANG Wentai YU Dongsheng SHI Xuezheng WANG Hongjie GU Zhujun ZHANG Xiangyan TAN Manzhi 2011Journal of Mountain Science2011,8,4:7
5Zonal Differences in Correlation Patterns Between Soil Organic Carbon and Climate Factors at Multi-extent显示文摘Studying the relationship between climate factors and soil organic carbon(SOC) is vitally important. However, how SOC responses to climate(temperature and precipitation) at cohesive extents is poorly studied. Two transects of approximately the same length(transect P and transect T) were selected to examine the variation of SOC content in relation to mean annual temperature(MAT) and mean annual precipitation(MAP). The coefficients of partial correlation between SOC density and MAT(Rt) and MAP(Rp) were determined to quantify the relationships between SOC density and the two climate factors. The results indicated that for transect T, Rt was statistically significant once the extent level was greater than or equal to two fundamental extent units, while for transect P, Rp showed statistical significance only at extent levels which were greater than two fundamental extent units. At the same extent levels but in different transects, Rts exhibited no zonal difference, but Rps did once the extent level was greater than two fundamental extent units. Therefore, to study the relationship between SOC density and different climate factors, different minimum extent levels should be examined. 6Screening and Characterization of the Alkaline Protease Isolated from PLI-1, a Strain of Brevibacillus sp. Collected from Indonesia's Hot Springs显示文摘A total of 69 strains of thermophilic bacteria were isolated from water, soil and sediment samples from three Indonesia's hot spring areas (Pantai cermin, Kalianda and Banyu wedang) by using Minimal Synthetic Medium (MSM). The extreme thermophile Brevibacillus sp. PLI-1 was found to produce extracellular thermophilic alkaline protease with optimal activity at 70℃ and pH 8.0-9.0. The molecular weight of the protease was estimated to be around 56 kD by SDS-PAGE. The maximum activity of the protease was 26.54 U mL-1. The protease activity did not decrease after 30 min and still retained more than 70% of relative activity after 60 min at 70℃ and pH 8.0. The ion Mg2+ was found to promote protease activity at both low and high concentrations, whereas Cu2+ and Zn2+ could almost completely inhibit the activity. Divalent cation chelator EDTA inhibited the enzyme activity by 55.06% ± 0.27%, while the inhibition caused by PMSF, Leupeptin, Pepstain A and Benzamidine were 66.78% ± 3.25%, 52.37% ± 0.25%, 62.47% ± 2.96% and 50.99% ± 0.24%, respectively. Based on these observations, the enzyme activity was conspicuously sensitive to the serine and cysteine protease inhibitors. 9High efficient acetalization of carbonyl compounds with diols catalyzed by novel carbon-based solid strong acid catalyst显示文摘The novel carbon-based acid catalyst has been applied to catalyzing the acetalization and ketalization. 10Production and characterization of an extracellular polysaccharide of antarctic marine bacteria Pseudoalteromonas sp. 11Microstructure and heat treatment for Ni3Al-based single crystal alloy with different crystal orientations显示文摘Ni3Al-based single crystal alloy IC6SX with different crystal orientations were prepared by seed crystal method.The microstructure and heat treatment of the alloy were investigated.The results showed that the microstructure of the alloy was in dendrite structure,and the crystal orientation had significant effect on the dendrite morphology of this alloy.The precipitated phases of(MoNi)6C and NiMo appeared in the microstructure of the three alloys with different crystal orientations during solidification process.Compared with other two alloys,the volume fractions of precipitated phases of both(MoNi)6C and NiMo was the most in the alloy with[111]orientation and the least in the alloy with[001]orientation.The solidus and liquidus temperatures of the alloy IC6SX tested by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)were 1356℃and 1387℃,respectively.Meanwhile,the effect of different solution temperatures on the microstructure of the alloy with different orientations was studied.The results showed that the precipitated phases of(MoNi)6C and NiMo were eliminated with the solid solution treatment under the condition of 1300℃/10h.However,the incipient melting of the alloys occurred due to the dissolution of low melting point phases.As the temperature dropped to 1280℃,the area of incipient melting in the alloy with different orientations decreased gradually.However,there was no incipient melting appearing in the three alloys with different orientations when the solution treatment temperature dropped to 1260℃.Liwu Jiang Xuezheng Dou Meiling Wu Min Cai 2020Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2020,30,4:2

20Bacterial and archaeal community structure of pan-Arctic Ocean sediments revealed by pyrosequencing显示文摘This study was to investigate bacterial and archaeal community structure of pan-Arctic Ocean sediments by pyrosequencing.In total,investigation of three marine sediments revealed 15 002 bacterial and 4 362 archaeal operational taxonomic units(OTUs) at the 97% similarity level.Analysis of community structure indicated that these three samples had high bacterial and archaeal diversity.The most relatively abundant bacterial group in Samples CC1 and R05 was Proteobacteria,while Firmicutes was dominant in Sample BL03.Thaumarchaeota was the most relatively abundant archaeal phylum in Samples CC1 and R05,and the relative abundance of Thaumarchaeota was almost as high as that of Euryarchaeota in Sample BL03.These two phyla accounted for nearly 100% of the archaeal OTUs.δ-Proteobacteria and γ-Proteobacteria were the two most relatively abundant classes at Proteobacterial class level,and their relative abundance was more than 60% in Samples CC1 and R05.There were also differences in the top 10 relatively abundant bacterial and archaeal OTUs among the three samples at the 97% similarity,and only 12 core bacterial OTUs were detected.Overall,this study indicated that there were distinct microbial communities and many unique OTUs in these three samples.LIN Xuezheng ZHANG Liang LIU Yanguang LI Yang 2017Acta Oceanologica Sinica2017,36,8:1
