Cranial irradiation impairs intrinsic excitability and synaptic plasticity of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons with implications for cognitive function显示文摘Radiation therapy is a standard treatment for head and neck tumors. However, patients often exhibit cognitive impairments following radiation therapy.Previous studies have revealed that hippocampal dysfunction, specifically abnormal hippocampal neurogenesis or neuroinflammation, plays a key role in radiation-induced cognitive impairment. However, the long-term effects of radiation with respect to the electrophysiological adaptation of hippocampal neurons remain poorly characterized. We found that mice exhibited cognitive impairment 3 months after undergoing 10 minutes of cranial irradiation at a dose rate of 3 Gy/min.Furthermore,we observed a remarkable reduction in spike firing and excitatory synaptic input,as well as greatly enhanced inhibitory inputs,in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons.Corresponding to the electrophysiological adaptation,we found reduced expression of synaptic plasticity marker VGLUT1 and increased expression of VGAT.Furthermore,in irradiated mice,long-term potentiation in the hippocampus was weakened and GluR1 expression was inhibited. These findings suggest that radiation can impair intrinsic excitability and synaptic plasticity in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons.Min-Yi Wu Wen-Jun Zou Pei Yu Yuhua Yang Shao-Jian Li Qiang Liu Jiatian Xie Si-Qi Chen Wei-Jye Lin Yamei Tang 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,10:5
Clinical characteristics and changes in living quality of patients with radiation encephalopathy induced by radiation therapy for treating nasopharyngeal carcinoma显示文摘BACKGROUND: Radiation encephalopathy (RE) caused by radiation therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma severely influences patients' quality of life (QOL). The factors, which influence such patients' QOL, have not been confirmed. OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical and imageological characteristics of patients with radiation therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma-induced RE and the changes in QOL, and analyze QOL influencing factors. DESIGN: Retrospective case analysis. SETTING: Department of Neurology, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-nine inpatients or outpatients with RE induced by radiation therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma admitted to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and Department of Neurology, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from March 1994 to August 2004 were involved in this experiment. They all met the diagnosis criteria of RE from MERRITT'S neurology (10th edition). Thirty-three involved patients were randomly chosen as RE group. Another 34 concurrent inpatients or outpatients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who received radiation therapy but without RE were chosen as control group. Informed consents of detected items were obtained from all the involved subjects. METHODS: ① Patients were evaluated when they were followed up. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF) was used for on-the-spot evaluation. High points of WHOQOL-BREF indicated better QOL. The Late Effects on Normal Tissues - Subjective, Objective, Management and Analytic (LENT-SOMA) scale for evaluating radiation injury was used to evaluate headache and neurologic disorder of patients with RE induced by radiation therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The evaluation was graded into 5 degrees. High degrees indicted severer clinical symptoms. ② Disease latency (i.e. time interval from symptoms and body signs appearing or radiation therapy ending to onset), initial symptoms, common symptoms, imageological characteristics, QOL and other related factors of patients were recorded. ③ Statistical management was carried out with SPSS 10.0 software. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: QOL and clinical characteristics of patients with RE induced by radiation therapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma as well as QOL influencing factors. RESULTS: All the involved subjects participated in the final analysis. ① Disease latency of patients with RE ranged from 0 to 24 years, and 95% confidence interval was 0 to 15 years. There were significant differences in amount of invaded cases between 6 months after one radiation therapy and 6 months after two or more radiation therapies (χ2=36.76,P < 0.01). ② The common initial symptom of patients with RE was glossopharyngeal paralysis (33 cases, 37%). ③ The first 3 common symptoms of patients with RE were glossopharyngeal paralysis (52 cases, 58%), limb inertia and sensory disorder (25 cases, 28%) and headache (25 cases, 28%).④Imageology of patients with RE was characterized by long T1 and T2 signal shadow on magnetic resonance. ⑤Total scores of health, of daily life and of social relationship, measured with WHOQOL-BREF, of patients in RE group were significantly lower than those in the control group, respectively [(2.06±0.86)points vs. (2.59±0.66)points; (2.45±0.75)points vs. (2.91±0.75)points; (51.67±15.24) points vs. (59.22±13.03)points, P < 0.05]. Patients undergoing two or more radiation therapies were inferior to those undergoing one radiation therapy in total scores of health, and of daily life, scores of physiology, and of psychology (P < 0.05). ⑥Glossopharyngeal paralysis was negatively correlated with scores of psychology, total scores of daily life and of health in WHOQOL-BREF (P < 0.05); Head was negatively correlated with scores of psychology in WHOQOL-BREF (P < 0.05); Neurologic deficit wasnegatively correlated with scores of psychology, and total scores of health in WHOQOL-BREF (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: ①The latency of RE of patients undergoing two or more radiation therapies is remarkably shortened, and QOL is decreased, but there is no difference in QOL between two genders. ② Brain edema is common in imageology of RE after radiation therapy. The first 3 ones of initial symptoms and common symptoms both are glossopharyngeal paralysis, neurologic deficit and headache, which greatly negatively influence QOL of patients.Yamei Tang Yi Li Fusheng Zhang Yunlin Liu Haihong Zhou Jianhong Ye Yigang Xing 2007Neural Regeneration Research2007,2,2:5
Serum uric acid is a risk factor for large-artery atherosclerosis cerebral infarction显示文摘Using the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification for acute ischemic stroke, 371 patients with either acute large-artery atherosclerosis or small-artery oc-clusion cerebral infarction were recruited to investigate the potential impact of elevated serum uric acid on cerebrovascular disorders. The results showed that patients who have suffered from large-artery atherosclerosis, relative to small-artery occlusion patients, were characterized by elevated serum uric acid but reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Logistic regression showed that elevated uric acid and lower triglyceride levels were the main risk factors for patients with large-artery atherosclerosis. The findings of this study suggest that hyperuricemia may be a risk factor for stroke.Jianjun Guo Qingyu Shen Jie Li Xiaoming Rong Ying Peng Yamei Tang 2011Neural Regeneration Research2011,6,36:3
Shell powder as a novel bio-filler for thermal insulation coatings显示文摘The feasibility of employing shell powder as a novel bio-filler to prepare fluorocarbon coating is demonstrated.According to the relevant Chinese standards, the thermal and mechanical properties of the shell powder-filled fluorocarbon coating were evaluated, and compared with those filled by commercial calcium carbonate. All the shell powder-filled coatings can meet the requirements stated in the relevant standards, and with decreasing the particle size of the shell powders, the performance of the thermal insulation coating is enhanced. The coating(SC3) filled by shell powders with an average particle size of 2.81 μm possesses a better thermal insulation performance than the coating(CC) filled by commercial calcium carbonate. The coating SC3 has comparable adhesive force and washing resistance with the coating CC, and in the washing resistance test, after 2000 cycles, the coating SC3 was still able to cover totally their substrates. This work demonstrates a high value-added disposal method for the aquacultural wastes.Peigen Zhang Jingwen Tang Qiang Tang Minzhao Zhang Luwei Shen Wubian Tian Yamei Zhang Zhengming Sun 2019Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2019,27,2:2
Spinal cord injury in patients with systemic lupus Erythematosus Clinical manifestations, imaging characteristics and treatment显示文摘BACKGROUND: There are fewer reports on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) related myelitis, and definite and uniform therapeutic program is not available. OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical manifestations, imaging characteristics, results of laboratory examination and treatment of SLE. DESIGN: A retrospective case analysis. SETTING: Department of Neurology, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. PARTICIPANTS: Totally 1 052 SLE inpatients were selected from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 1995 to May 2005, and they all accorded with the diagnostic standards for SLE set by American Rheumatism Association in 1982. 124 of them were diagnosed to have damage of central nervous system. Inclusive criteria: Patients with one of the focal physical signs, including mental and behavior disorders, headache, seizure and involvement of nervous system. Exclusive criteria: Patients with hypertensive encephalopathy, damage of nervous system due to uremia and infection of central nervous system. Spinal cord lesion occurred in 15 female cases of 23–51 years old. Informed consents were obtained from all the participants. METHODS: The physical signs, laboratory examinations, therapeutic program and prognosis were recorded in the 15 patients with symptoms of spinal cord lesions. All the patients underwent MRI scan of brain or lesioned segment of spinal cord, and 8 cases of them underwent lumbar puncture to determine intracranial pressure, routine and biochemical examinations were cerebrospinal fluid were performed. The disease activity of SLE in systems beyond central nervous system was evaluated with modified lupus activity criteria count (LACC). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Incidence of SLE related myelitis, attack age distribution and its association with the activity of SLE; ② Comparisons of the clinical characteristics, cranial and spinal cord MRI manifestations, different therapeutic program and prognosis. RESULTS: All the 15 SLE patients were involved in the analysis of results. ① The incidence of SLE related myelitis was low (1%, 15/1 052). ② SLE related myelitis occurred mostly when the SLE symptoms were active, and only a few occurred at the stable period. ③ Among the SLE patients, MRI displayed abnormal changes in 71% (10/14), the typical changes appeared abnormal signals at corresponding spinal segments, manifested as prolonged T1 and T2 signals, thickened spinal segments. Lumbar segments were mostly involved. ④ Of the 9 patients treated with hormone impact, 7 cases (78%) had obvious improvements, and the effects were better in those treated with immunosuppressor combined with intravenous immunoglobulin of large dosage. CONCLUSION: ① Myelitis is a rare complication of SLE. ② MRI serves as a valuable supplementary approach in the diagnosis of SLE related myelitis without specificity. ③ Steroid pulse combined with immunosuppressor and intravenous immunoglobulin of large dosage is effective in the treatment.Yamei Tang Fusheng Zhang Qingyu Shen Xiangpen Li Yigang Xing 2007Neural Regeneration Research2007,2,3:1
Brilliant blue G attenuates lipopolysaccharide-mediated microglial activation and inflammation显示文摘Previous studies have confirmed that oxidized adenosine triphosphate, a P2X7 receptor antagonist, attenuates lipopolysaccharide-mediated microglial activation and inflammatory expression following neuronal damage in rat brain. NaCl and temperature may affect the potency of oxidized adenosine triphosphate. Brilliant blue G is a derivative of a widely used food additive and has little toxicity. This study explored the effects of brilliant blue G, a selective P2X7 receptor antagonist, on microglial activation and inflammation. Results demonstrated that brilliant blue G inhibited the release of cyclooxygenase-2 and interleukin-6 in BV2 cells. Immunofluorescence displayed that brilliant blue G could suppress lipopolysaccharide-induced microglial activation. This study used RNA interference to block P2X7 receptor expression and found that small interfering RNA also suppressed the release of cyclooxygenase-2 and interleukin-6 in BV2 cells. These results suggested that downregulation of the P2X7 receptor by brilliant blue G was involved in the inhibition of microglial activation and inflammation.Kui Lu Jue Wang Bin Hu Xiaolei Shi Junyi Zhou Yamei Tang Ying Peng 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,7:1

Digit and letter alexia in carbon monoxide poisoning显示文摘This study examined a 24-year-old patient with delayed encephalopathy, who was admitted to hospital with complaints of headache and visual impairment 1 week after acute carbon monoxide poisoning. The results of a visual field assessment, electroencephalography and head magnetic resonance imaging indicated damage to the cerebral cortex. After a 2-week treatment period, the patient had recovered from the visual impairment, but exhibited digit- and letter-reading difficulty. The Chinese aphasia battery and the number and letter battery supplement were conducted. The results revealed that the patient exhibited digit and letter alexia, while the ability to read Chinese characters was preserved. In contrast, the patient exhibited a deficit in Chinese character writing, while number and letter writing remained intact. Following treatment, reading and writing ability was improved and electroencephalographic abnormalities were ameliorated. Overall, our experimental findings demonstrated that delayed encephalopathy following acute carbon monoxide poisoning was characterized by digit and letter alexia.Qingyu Shen Xiaoming Rong Rui Pan Ying Peng Wei Peng Yamei Tang 2012Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,21:1
New Insights into the Dysfunctions of Pericytes and Neurovascular Units in Neurodegenerative Diseases显示文摘The neurovascular unit(NVU)is an essential anatomical and physiological entity for the maintenance of brain homeostasis and function;it is composed of endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, neurons, vascular smooth muscle cells, microglia, and oligodendroglia[1].The NVU regulates important brain vessel properties such as the integrity of the blood-brain barrier(BBB)and cerebral blood flow(CBF).Considerable efforts have been made to investigate the cerebral microcirculatory dysfunction in ageing and Alzheimer’s disease(AD)[2].Qing Liu Wei-Jye Lin Yamei Tang 2020Neuroscience Bulletin2020,36,12:1

Renovascular hypertension causes cerebral vascular remodeling显示文摘Renovascular hypertensive rats (RHRs) were developed using the 2-kidney, 2-clip method. All RHRs at 10 weeks displayed high permeability of the cerebral surface blood vessels. Vascular casts of the RHRs showed that the vascular network was sparse. The arterioles of the RHRs at 10 weeks had smaller lumen diameters, but thicker vessel walls with hyalinosis formation compared with control animals. The endothelial cell membrane appeared damaged, and microthrombus formed. After ischemia, the infarction size was larger in RHRs than in control animals. These results suggest that cerebral arterioles in RHRs underwent structural remodeling. High blood pressure may aggravate the severity of brain injury in cerebral ischemia and affect the recovery of ischemia.Yamei Tang Xiangpen Li Yi Li Qingyu Shen Xiaoming Rong Ruxun Huang Ying Peng 2011Neural Regeneration Research2011,6,25:0
Molecule-based vertical transistor via intermolecular charge transport throughπ-πstacking显示文摘Theπ-πstacking is a well-recognized intermolecular interaction that is responsible for the construction of electron hopping channels in numerous conducting frameworks/aggregates.However,the exact role ofπ-to-πchannels within typical single crystalline organic semiconductors remains unclear as the orientations of these molecules are diverse, and their control usually requires additional side chain groups that misrepresent the intrinsic properties of the original semiconducting molecules. Therefore, the construction of conduction channels with intrinsicπ-πstacking in the molecule-based device is crucial for the utilization of their unique transport characteristics and understanding of the transport mechanism. To this end,we present a molecular intercalation strategy that integrates two-dimensional layered materials with functional organic semiconductor molecules for functional molecule-based electronics.Various organic semiconductor molecules can be effectively intercalated into the van der Waals gaps of semi-metallic TaS_(2) withπ-πstacking configuration and controlled intercalant content. Our results show that the vertical charge transport in the stacking direction shows a tunneling-dominated mechanism that strongly depends on the molecular structures.Furthermore,we demonstrated a new type of molecule-based vertical transistor in which TaS_(2) andπ-πstacked organic molecules function as the electrical contact and the active channel,respectively.On/off ratios as high as 447 are achieved under electrostatic modulation in ionic liquid, comparable to the current state-of-the-art molecular transistors. Our study provides an ideal platform for probing intrinsic charge transport acrossπ-πstacked conjugated molecules and also a feasible approach for the construction of high-performance molecule-based electronic devices.Cheng Liu Cheng Fu Lingyu Tang Jianghua Wu Zhangyan Mu Yamei Sun Yanghang Pan Bailin Tian Kai Bao Jing Ma Qiyuan He Mengning Ding 2024Nano Research2024,17,5:0
Wood forming tissue-specific expression of PdSuSy and HCHL increases holocellulose content and improves saccharification in Populus显示文摘Development of strategies to deconstruct lignocellulosic biomass in tree species is essential for biofuels and biomaterials production. We applied a wood forming tissue-specific system in a hybrid poplar to express both PdSuSy(a sucrose synthase gene from Populus deltoides×P.euramericana that has not been functionally characterized)and HCHL(the hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA hydratase-lyase gene from Pseudomonas fluorescens, which inhibits lignin polymerization in Arabidopsis). The PdSuSy-HCHL overexpression poplars correspondingly driven by the promoters of Arabidopsis AtCesA7 and AtC4 H resulted in a significant increase in cellulose(>8%),xylan(>12%)and glucose(>29%)content,accompanying a reduction in galacturonic acid(>36%)content,compared to control plants. The saccharification efficiency of these overexpression poplars was dramatically increased by up to 27%,but total lignin content was unaffected. These transgenic poplars showed inhibited growth characteristics,including>16%reduced plant height,>10% reduced number of internodes,and>18% reduced fresh weight after growth of 4 months, possibly due to relatively low expression of HCHL in secondary xylem. Our results demonstrate the structural complexity and interaction of the cell wall polymers in wood tissue and outline a potential method to increase biomass saccharification in woody species.Yang Zhang Hua Xu Yingzhen Kong Jiawen Hua Xianfeng Tang Yamei Zhuang Yue Bai Gongke Zhou Guohua Chai 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,4:0
A multi-screen collaboration-based low-cost portable dry-lab simulator for basic laparoscopic skills training: A technical note显示文摘Laparoscopic skills training has always been crucial for novice surgeons. Readily accessible equipment, aswell as structured training curriculum should be provided to guarantee adequate practice hours and skillproficiency. Dry-lab training is typically adopted before animal model surgery, usually comprising ofpurpose-built bulky simulators that is neither accessible nor portable. In this technical note, we designed ahome-made simulator, using two 4 L water jugs as operating space that are communicated inside, plus anobservation hole taped in between to mimic the triangular working space of laparoscopic surgery. Imagingwas achieved via smartphone camera, which was wirelessly connected to a laptop and a projector for realtime display on multiple screens, using built-in multi-screen collaboration software. A self-regulated andproficiency-based training curriculum was adopted. This dry-lab simulator is low-cost, highly portable andeasily replicable for basic laparoscopic skills training for the beginners to intermediate surgeons, whichmay serve as a good way for the standardized residency and specialist training program.Yifan Chang Chenqi Tang Xianqi Shui Yamei Zhou Xiaoyu Jiang Jia Liu Yu Sun 2022Laparoscopic, Endoscopic and Robotic Surgery2022,5,2:0
Risk factors and causes of hyponatremia in patients after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer:A retrospective study显示文摘Background:Hyponatremia is the most frequently encountered electrolyte abnormality which is caused by kinds of reasons including kidney, metabolic and central nervous system diseases. The adverse effects of hyponatremia include but not limit to cerebral edema and seizures, which often aggravate neurological damage. Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention would reduce the risk of adverse effects of hyponatremia. Objective:To investigate the differences between patients with or without hyponatremia after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, and to explore the risk factors and causes of hyponatremia. Methods:Patients who aged over 18 years old and underwent radiotherapy for head and neck cancer were collected from Department of Neurology,Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital from January 2012 to July 2018.The comorbidities of patients and demographic and serological data were retrospectively collected to investigate the causes and risk factors of hyponatremia in these patients.Differences of the length of hospital stay and the cognitive function between patients with and without hyponatremia were analyzed. Results:In this study,798 patients were reviewed. The incidence of hyponatremia was 17.9%.Risk factors of hyponatremia included age(OR 1.05,95%CI 1.03–1.07,P<0.001),gender(OR 0.62,95%CI 0.39–0.99,P=0.046),medical history of hypothyroidism(OR 2.42,95%CI 1.26–4.09,P紏0.006),adrenal insufficiency(OR 15.61,95%CI 2.73–89.07,P=0.002)or dysphagia(OR 1.81,95%CI 1.24–2.65,P=0.002).The most common cause of hyponatremia was cerebral salt-wasting syndrome(CSWS)(32.9%).The insufficient intake due to dysphagia(29.4%),and hypothyroidism(13.3%)were also common in these patients.Clinically, hyponatremia resulted in the prolonged hospitalization time. Conclusion:Hyponatremia would be common in patients who underwent radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. The importance of distinguishing the etiology of hyponatremia is addressed.Yaxuan Pi Yi Li Zhongshan Shi Yamei Tang 2021Radiation Medicine and Protection2021,2,1:0
Structure of the brachial plexus root and adjacent regions displayed by ultrasound imaging显示文摘Brachial plexuses of 110 healthy volunteers were examined using high resolution color Doppler ultrasound. Ultrasonic characteristics and anatomic variation in the intervertebral foramen, interscalene, supraclavicular and infraclavicular, as well as the axillary brachial plexus were investigated. Results confirmed that the normal brachial plexus on cross section exhibited round or elliptic hypoechoic texture. Longitudinal section imaging showed many parallel linear hypo-moderate echoes, with hypo-echo. The transverse processes of the seventh cervical vertebra, the scalene space, the subclavian artery and the deep cervical artery are important markers in an examination. The display rates for the interscalene, and supraclavicular and axillary brachial plexuses were 100% each, while that for the infraclavicular brachial plexus was 97%. The region where the normal brachial plexus root traversed the intervertebral foramen exhibited a regular hypo-echo. The display rate for the C 5-7 nerve roots was 100%, while those for C 8 and T 1 were 83% and 68%, respectively. A total of 20 of the 110 subjects underwent cervical CT scan. High-frequency ultrasound can clearly display the outline of the transverse processes of the vertebrae, which were consistent with CT results. These results indicate that high-frequency ultrasound provides a new method for observing the morphology of the brachial plexus. The C 7 vertebra is a marker for identifying the position of brachial plexus nerve roots.Zhengyi Li Xun Xia Xiaoming Rong Yamei Tang Dachuan Xu 2012Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,26:0
