Cell biomechanics and its applications in human disease diagnosis显示文摘Certain diseases are known to cause changes in the physical and biomechanical properties of cells. These include cancer, malaria, and sickle cell anemia among others.Typically, such physical property changes can result in several fold increases or decreases in cell stiffness, which are significant and can result in severe pathology and eventual catastrophic breakdown of the bodily functions. While there are developed biochemical and biological assays to detect the onset or presence of diseases, there is always a need to develop more rapid, precise, and sensitive methods to detect and diagnose diseases.Biomechanical property changes can play a significant role in this regard. As such, research into disease biomechanics can not only give us an in-depth knowledge of the mechanisms underlying disease progression, but can also serve as a powerful tool for detection and diagnosis. This article provides some insights into opportunities for how significant changes in cellular mechanical properties during onset or progression of a disease can be utilized as useful means for detection and diagnosis. We will also showcase several technologies that have already been developed to perform such detection and diagnosis. | Yasaman Nematbakhsh Chwee Teck Lim | 2015 | Acta Mechanica Sinica2015,31,2: | 5
Synthesis of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Induction Thermal Plasma显示文摘The production of high quality single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)on a bulk scale has been an issue of considerable interest.Recently,it has been demonstrated that high quality SWCNTs can be continuously synthesized on large scale by using induction thermal plasma technology. In this process, the high energy density of the thermal plasma is employed to generate dense vapor-phase precursors for the synthesis of SWCNTs.With the current reactor system,a carbon soot product which contains approximately 40 wt%of SWCNTs can be continuously synthesized at the high production rate of~100 g/h.In this article, our recent research efforts to achieve major advances in this technology are presented.Firstly, the processing parameters involved are examined systematically in order to evaluate their individual inuences on the SWCNT synthesis.Based on these results, the appropriate operating conditions of the induction thermal plasma process for an effective synthesis of SWCNTs are discussed.A characterization study has also been performed on the SWCNTs produced under the optimum processing conditions. Finally,a mathematical model of the process currently under development is described. The model will help us to better understand the synthesis of SWCNTs in the induction plasma process. | Keun Su Kim Ala Moradian Javad Mostaghimi Yasaman Alinejad Ali Shahverdi Benoit Simard Gervais Soucy | 2009 | Nano Research2009,2,10: | 4
Flexible thermoelectric generator with liquid metal interconnects and low thermal conductivity silicone filler显示文摘Harvesting body heat using thermoelectricity provides a promising path to realizing self-powered,wearable electronics that can achieve continuous,long-term,uninterrupted health monitoring. This paper reports a flexible thermoelectric generator(TEG)that provides efficient conversion of body heat to electrical energy. The device relies on a low thermal conductivity aerogel–silicone composite that secures and thermally isolates the individual semiconductor elements that are connected in series using stretchable eutectic gallium-indium(EGaIn)liquid metal interconnects. The composite consists of aerogel particulates mixed into polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)providing as much as 50%reduction in the thermal conductivity of the silicone elastomer.Worn on the wrist, the flexible TEGs present output power density figures approaching 35μWcm^(−2)at an air velocity of 1.2 ms^(−1),equivalent to walking speed. The results suggest that these flexible TEGs can serve as the main energy source for low-power wearable electronics. | Viswanath Padmanabhan Ramesh Yasaman Sargolzaeiaval Taylor Neumann Veena Misra Daryoosh Vashaee Michael D.Dickey Mehmet C.Ozturk | 2021 | npj Flexible Electronics2021,5,1: | 3

Seismic vulnerability assessment of urban buildings and traffic networks using fuzzy ordered weighted average显示文摘Urban buildings and urban traffic network are considered as the vital arteries of cities which have particular effects especially after the crisis in the search and rescue operations. The aim of this study is to determine the vulnerability of urban areas especially, buildings and traffic networks using multicriteria geographic information systems and decisionmaking methods. As there are many effective criteria on the seismic vulnerability that they have uncertain and vague properties, the method of this paper is applying fuzzy ordered weighted average(OWA) to model the seismic vulnerability of urban buildings and traffic networks in the most optimistic and pessimistic states. The study area is district 6 of Tehran that is affected by the four major faults, and thus will be threatened by the earthquakes. The achieved results illustrated the vulnerability with different degrees of risk levels including very high, high, medium, low and very low. The results show that in the most optimistic case 14% and in the pessimistic case 1% of buildings tolerate in very low vulnerability. The vulnerability of urban street network also indicates that in the optimistic case 12% and in the pessimistic case at most 9% of the area are in appropriate condition and the North and NorthEast of the study area are more vulnerable than South of it. | Yasaman ASADI Najmeh Neysani SAMANY Keyvan EZIMAND | 2019 | Journal of Mountain Science2019,16,3: | 1

Seismic vulnerability assessment of urban buildings using the rough set theory and weighted linear combination显示文摘Seismic vulnerability assessment of urban buildings is among the most crucial procedures to post-disaster response and recovery of infrastructure systems. The present study proceeds to estimate the seismic vulnerability of urban buildings and proposes a new framework training on the two objectives.First,a comprehensive interpretation of the effective parameters of this phenomenon including physical and human factors is done.Second, the Rough Set theory is used to reduce the integration uncertainties,as there are numerous quantitative and qualitative data. Both objectives were conducted on seven distinct earthquake scenarios with different intensities based on distance from the fault line and the epicenter. The proposed method was implemented by measuring seismic vulnerability for the seven specified seismic scenarios. The final results indicated that among the entire studied buildings,71.5%were highly vulnerable as concerning the highest earthquake scenario(intensity=7 MM and acceleration calculated based on the epicenter),while in the lowest earthquake scenario(intensity=5 MM),the percentage of vulnerable buildings decreased to approximately 57%.Also,the findings proved that the distance from the fault line rather than the earthquake center(epicenter)has a significant effect on the seismic vulnerability of urban buildings. The model was evaluated by comparing the results with the weighted linear combination(WLC)method. The accuracy of the proposed model was substantiated according to evaluation reports.Vulnerability assessment based on the distance from the epicenter and its comparison with the distance from the fault shows significant reliable results. | Yasaman ASADI Najmeh NEYSANI SAMANY Majid KIAVARZ MOQADAM Ata ABDOLLAHI KAKROODI Meysam ARGANY | 2022 | Journal of Mountain Science2022,19,3: | 1

Etiology, pathogenesis, and management of acute intraocular lens opacification: a systematic review显示文摘Millions of cataract surgeries with intraocular lens(IOL) implantation are performed worldwide. Although cataract surgery brings many benefits to the patients, the risk of various complications is still a concern. One of the infrequent adverse events but potentially affecting on patients’ visual acuity and contrast sensitivity is losing the transparency of IOL. IOL opacification may lead to IOL removal or exchange, which is unpleasant to both the patient and the surgeon. Several reports of acute IOL clouding are available in the literature describing various etiologies of this phenomenon, however, the exact mechanism remained unclear in some cases. Herein, we aimed to review the causes and outcomes of intraoperative and early postoperative IOL opacification. | Bita Momenaei Mohammad Reza Akbari Seyed Ali Tabatabaei Mohammad Soleimani Mahdi Soleymanzadeh Kaveh Fadakar Ahmed Alshaheeb Mahtab Malekpour Khazari Yasaman Vaseghi Kasra Cheraqpour | 2022 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2022,15,7: | 0
Phase-sensitive plasmonic biosensor using a portable and large field-of-view interferometric microarray imager显示文摘Nanophotonics, and more specifically plasmonics, provides a rich toolbox for biomolecular sensing, since the engineered metasurfaces can enhance light–matter interactions to unprecedented levels. So far, biosensing associated with high-quality factor plasmonic resonances has almost exclusively relied on detection of spectral shifts and their associated intensity changes. However, the phase response of the plasmonic resonances have rarely been exploited, mainly because this requires a more sophisticated optical arrangement. Here we present a new phase-sensitive platform for high-throughput and label-free biosensing enhanced by plasmonics. It employs specifically designed Au nanohole arrays and a large field-of-view interferometric lens-free imaging reader operating in a collinear optical path configuration. This unique combination allows the detection of atomically thin(angstrom-level)topographical features over large areas, enabling simultaneous reading of thousands of microarray elements. As the plasmonic chips are fabricated using scalable techniques and the imaging reader is built with low-cost off-the-shelf consumer electronic and optical components, the proposed platform is ideal for point-of-care ultrasensitive biomarker detection from small sample volumes. Our research opens new horizons for on-site disease diagnostics and remote health monitoring. | Filiz Yesilkoy Roland A Terborg Josselin Pello Alexander A Belushkin Yasaman Jahani Valerio Pruneri Hatice Altug | 2017 | Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1: | 0
Two-dimensional Parameter Relationships for W UMa-type Systems Revisited显示文摘Reviewing the empirical and theoretical parameter relationships between various parameters is a good way to understand more about contact binary systems. In this investigation,two-dimensional(2D)relationships for P–MV(system),P–L1,2,M1,2–L1,2,and q–Lratiowere revisited. The sample used is related to 118 contact binary systems with an orbital period shorter than 0.6 days whose absolute parameters were estimated based on the Gaia Data Release 3 parallax. We reviewed previous studies on 2D relationships and updated six parameter relationships. Therefore,Markov chain Monte Carlo and Machine Learning methods were used, and the outcomes were compared. We selected 22 contact binary systems from eight previous studies for comparison, which had light curve solutions using spectroscopic data. The results show that the systems are in good agreement with the results of this study. | Atila Poro Ehsan Paki Ailar Alizadehsabegh Mehdi Khodadadilori Selda Ranjbar Salehian Mahya Hedayatjoo Fatemeh Hashemi Yasaman Dashti Fatemeh Mohammadizadeh | 2024 | Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics2024,24,1: | 0
