| 3 | Structure and antibacterial activity of Ce3+ exchanged montmorillonites显示文摘Four kinds of Ce3+ exchanged montmorillonites(Ce/MMTs) were prepared by an ion-exchange reaction, and characterized with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray difference (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron micros-copy (SEM). The surface properties and antibacterial activity of Ce/MMTs were also investigated. The chemical compositions of Ce/MMTs were determined, and the cerium of Ce/MMTs was confirmed to be present as trivalent cerium state. The d001 basal spacings of Ce/MMTs were enlarged with the enhancement of the cerium contents, and the particles were formed with irregular shape. On increasing the Ce con-tents of Ce/MMTs, the special surface areas were decreased, but the total pore volumes and the average pore sizes were increased. The anti-bacterial activity of Ce/MMTs is increased with increasing the cerium contents, and 1.5g/L of Ce/MMT-3 containing 11.46wt.% of curium could remove all the Staphylococcus aureus and more than 99.9% of the Escherichia coli within 24.0 h of contact. | 4 | Severe drought strongly reduces water use and its recovery ability of mature Mongolian Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litv.) in a semi-arid sandy environment of northern China显示文摘Trees growing in a semi-arid sandy environment are often exposed to drought conditions due to seasonal variations in precipitation, low soil water retention and deep groundwater level.However, adaptability and plasticity of individuals to the changing drought conditions greatly vary among tree species.In this study, we estimated water use(Ts) of Mongolian Scots pine(MSP;Pinus sylvestris var.mongolica Litv.) based on sap flux density measurements over four successive years(2013–2016) that exhibited significant fluctuations in precipitation in a semi-arid sandy environment of northern China.The results showed that fluctuations in daily Ts synchronously varied with dry-wet cycles of soil moisture over the study period.The daily ratio of water use to reference evapotranspiration(Ts/ET0) on sunny days in each year showed a negative linear relationship with the severity of drought in the upper soil layer(0–1 m;P<0.01).The decrease in Ts induced by erratic drought during the growing season recovered due to precipitation.However, this recovery ability failed under prolonged and severe droughts.The Ts/ET0 ratio significantly declined with the progressive reduction in the groundwater level(gw) over the study period(P<0.01).We concluded that the upper soil layer contributed the most to the Ts of MSP during the growing season.The severity and duration of droughts in this layer greatly reduced Ts.Nevertheless, gw determined whether the Ts could completely recover after the alleviation of long-term soil drought.These results provide practical information for optimizing MSP management to stop ongoing degradation in the semi-arid sandy environments. | DANG Hongzhong ZHANG Lizhen YANG Wenbin FENG Jinchao HAN Hui CHEN Yiben | 2019 | Journal of Arid Land2019,11,6: | 4 |
| 5 | Preparation and characterization of β-cyclodextrin grafted N-maleoyl chitosan nanoparticles for drug delivery显示文摘β-cyclodextrin (CD) grafted N-maleoyl chitosan (CD-g-NMCS) with two different degrees of substitution (DS) of N-maleoyl (DS = 21.2% and 30.5%) were synthesized from maleic anhydride and chitosan bearing pendant cyclodextrin (CD-g-CS). CD-g-NMCS based nanoparticles were prepared via an ionic gelation method together with chitosan and CD-g-CS nanoparticles.The size and zeta potential of prepared CD-g-NMCS nanoparticles were 179.2~274.0 nm and 36.2~42.4 m V, respectively. In vitro stability test indicated that CD-g-NMCS nanoparticles were more stable in phosphate-buffered saline compared with chitosan nanoparticles. Moreover, a poorly water-soluble drug, ketoprofen (KTP), was selected as a model drug to study the obtained nanoparticle’s potentials as drug delivery carriers. The drug loading efficiency of CD-g-NMCS20 nanoparticles were 14.8% for KTP. MTT assay showed that KTP loaded CD-g-NMCS nanoparticles were safe drug carriers. Notably, in vitro drug release studies showed that KTP was released in a sustained-release manner for the nanoparticles. The pharmacokinetic of drug loaded CD-g-NMCS20 nanoparticles were evaluated in rats after intravenous administration. The results of studies revealed that, compared with free KTP, KTP loaded CD-g-NMCS20 nanoparticles exhibited a significant increase in AUC0→24h and mean residence time by 6.6-fold and 2.9-fold, respectively. Therefore, CD-g-NMCS nanoparticles could be used as a novel promising nanoparticle-based drug delivery system for sustained release of poorly water-soluble drugs. | 6 | An ultrasonic humidification fluorescent tracing method for detecting unsaturated atmospheric water absorption by the aerial parts of desert plants显示文摘Atmospheric water absorption by plants has been explored for more than two centuries, and the aerial parts of plants, particularly the leaves of certain species, have been demonstrated to have an ability to absorb and utilize saturated atmospheric water such as fog, dew and condensed water. So far, however, there have been few studies on the aerial parts of desert plants in their absorption of unsaturated water from the atmosphere. This study presents an ultrasonic humidification fluorescent tracing method of detecting unsaturated atmospheric water absorption by the aerial parts of desert plants. We constructed an organic glass room based on the sizes of field plants. Then, the aboveground parts of the plants were humidified in the sealed glasshouse using an ultrasonic humidifier containing fluorescent reagents. The humidity and wetting time were controlled by turning on or off the humidifier according to the reading of a thermo-hygrometer suspended in the glasshouse. Fluorescence microscopy was employed to observe these plant samples. This method can generate unsaturated atmospheric water vapor and incorporate other fluorescent reagents or water-soluble chemical reagents for gasified humidification. In addition, it can identify plant parts that absorb unsaturated atmospheric water from the air, detect water absorption sites on the surface of leaves or tender stems, and determine the ability of tissues or microstructure of aerial parts to absorb water. This method provides a direct visual evidence for the inspection of leaf or tender stem microstructure in response to unsaturated atmospheric water absorption. Moreover, this method shows that aqueous pores in the cuticles of leaves or tender stems of desert plants are large enough to allow the passage of ionic fluorescent brightener with a molecular weight of up to 917 g/mol. | 10 | Nanoparticle structure transformation of mPEG grafted chitosan with rigid backbone induced by a-cyclodextrin显示文摘This paper presented an interesting nanoparticle-based drug delivery system with morphology transition behavior depending on the content of exposed PEG chain on the particle surface, which is adjustable by addition of different amount of cyclodextrin(a-CD). The effect of a-CD inclusion to the self-assembly behavior of methoxy polyethylene glycol(mPEG) grafted chitosan(CS) was studied. The results showed that the mPEG grafted chitosan(mPEG-[9_TD$IF]g-CS) forms self-assembled nanoparticles with either micelle or hollow sphere morphology depending on the ratio of a-CD to mPEG, as characterized by atomic force microscopy(AFM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Their sizes and zeta potential increased from 257.6 nmto 768.2 nm and from +4.5 mV to +11.6 mV, respectively, with the increasing amount of a-CD. The correlation between zeta potential and particle size of a-CD/mPEG-[9_TD$IF]g-CS nanoparticles indicated varied PEG density on surface of nanoparticles.
