1PhaseStain:the digital staining of label-free quantitative phase microscopy images using deep learning显示文摘Using a deep neural network,we demonstrate a digital staining technique,which we term PhaseStain,to transform the quantitative phase images(QPI)of label-free tissue sections into images that are equivalent to the brightfield microscopy images of the same samples that are histologically stained.Through pairs of image data(QPI and the corresponding brightfield images,acquired after staining),we train a generative adversarial network and demonstrate the effectiveness of this virtual-staining approach using sections of human skin,kidney,and liver tissue,matching the brightfield microscopy images of the same samples stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin,Jones’stain,and Masson’s trichrome stain,respectively.This digital-staining framework may further strengthen various uses of label-free QPI techniques in pathology applications and biomedical research in general,by eliminating the need for histological staining,reducing sample preparation related costs and saving time.Our results provide a powerful example of some of the unique opportunities created by data-driven image transformations enabled by deep learning.Yair Rivenson Tairan Liu Zhensong Wei Yibo Zhang Kevin de Haan Aydogan Ozcan 2019Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1:19
2Motility-based label-free detection of parasites in bodily fluids using holographic speckle analysis and deep learning显示文摘Parasitic infections constitute a major global public health issue.Existing screening methods that are based on manual microscopic examination often struggle to provide sufficient volumetric throughput and sensitivity to facilitate early diagnosis.Here,we demonstrate a motility-based label-free computational imaging platform to rapidly detect motile parasites in optically dense bodily fluids by utilizing the locomotion of the parasites as a specific biomarker and endogenous contrast mechanism.Based on this principle,a cost-effective and mobile instrument,which rapidly screens~3.2 mL of fluid sample in three dimensions,was built to automatically detect and count motile microorganisms using their holographic time-lapse speckle patterns.We demonstrate the capabilities of our platform by detecting trypanosomes,which are motile protozoan parasites,with various species that cause deadly diseases affecting millions of people worldwide.Using a holographic speckle analysis algorithm combined with deep learningbased classification,we demonstrate sensitive and label-free detection of trypanosomes within spiked whole blood and artificial cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)samples,achieving a limit of detection of ten trypanosomes per mL of whole blood(~five-fold better than the current state-of-the-art parasitological method)and three trypanosomes per mL of CSF.We further demonstrate that this platform can be applied to detect other motile parasites by imaging Trichomonas vaginalis,the causative agent of trichomoniasis,which affects 275 million people worldwide.With its costeffective,portable design and rapid screening time,this unique platform has the potential to be applied for sensitive and timely diagnosis of neglected tropical diseases caused by motile parasites and other parasitic infections in resource-limited regions.Yibo Zhang Hatice Ceylan Koydemir Michelle M.Shimogawa Sener Yalcin Alexander Guziak Tairan Liu Ilker Oguz Yujia Huang Bijie Bai Yilin Luo Yi Luo Zhensong Wei Hongda Wang Vittorio Bianco Bohan Zhang Rohan Nadkarni Kent Hill Aydogan Ozcan 2018Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1:6
3Extremely Active Tropical Cyclone Activities over the Western North Pacific and South China Sea in Summer 2018: Joint Effects of Decaying La Nina and Intraseasonal Oscillation显示文摘In summer 2018,a total of 18 tropical cyclones(TCs)formed in the western North Pacific(WNP)and South China Sea(SCS),among which 8 TCs landed in China,ranking respectively the second and the first highest since 1951.Most of these TCs travelled northwest to northward,bringing in heavy rainfall and strong winds in eastern China and Japan.The present study investigates the impacts of decaying La Nina and intraseasonal oscillation(ISO)on the extremely active TCs over the WNP and SCS in summer 2018 by use of correlation and composite analyses.It is found that the La Nina episode from October 2017 to March 2018 led to above-normal sea surface temperature(SST)over central–western Pacific,lower sea level pressure and 500-hPa geopotential height over WNP,and abnormally strong convective activities over the western Pacific in summer 2018.These preceding oceanic thermal conditions and their effects on circulation anomalies are favorable to TC genesis in summer.Detailed examination reveals that the monsoon trough was located further north and east,inducing more TCs in northern and eastern WNP;and the more eastward WNP subtropical high as well as the significant wave train with a'-+-+'height anomaly pattern over the midlatitude Eurasia–North Pacific region facilitated the northwest to northward TC tracks.Further analyses reveal that two successively active periods of Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO)occurred in summer 2018 and the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation(BSISO)was also active over WNP,propagating northward significantly,corresponding to the more northward TC tracks.The MJO was stagnant over the Maritime Continent to western Pacific,leading to notably enhanced convection in the lower troposphere and divergence in the upper troposphere,conducive to TC occurrences.In a word,the extremely active TC activities over the WNP and SCS in summer 2018 are closely linked with the decaying La Nina,and the MJO and BSISO;their joint effects result in increased TC occurrences and the TC tracks being shifted more northwest to northward than normal.Lijuan CHEN Zhensong GONG Jie WU Weijing LI 2019Journal of Meteorological Research2019,33,4:4
4Divergence-degenerate spatial multiplexing towards future ultrahigh capacity,low error-rate optical communications显示文摘Spatial mode(de)multiplexiing of orbital angular momentum(OAM)beams is a promising solution to address future bandwidth issues,but the rapidly increasing divergence with the mode order severely limits the practically addressable number of OAM modes.Here we present a set of multi-vortex geometric beams(MVGBs)as high-dimensional information carriers for free-space optical communication,by virtue of three independent degrees of freedom(DoFs)including central OAM,sub-beam OAM,and coherent-state phase.The novel modal basis set has high divergence degeneracy,and highly consistent propagation behaviors among all spatial modes,capable of increasing the addressable spatial channels by two orders of magnitude than OAM basis as predicted.We experimentally realize the tri-DoF MVGB mode(de)multiplexing and data transmission by the conjugated modulation method,demonstrating lower error rates caused by center offset and coherent background noise,compared with OAM basis.Our work provides a potentially useful basis for the next generation of large-scale dense data communication.Zhensong Wan Yijie Shen Zhaoyang Wang Zijian Shi Qiang Liu Xing Fu 2022Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,6:3
5Stiffening of sickle cell trait red blood cells under simulated strenuous exercise conditions显示文摘The higher risk of vaso-occlusion events and sudden death for sickle-cell trait(SCT)athletes has been speculatively ascribed to SCT red blood cell(RBC)stiffening during strenuous exercise.However,the microenvironmental changes that could induce the stiffening of SCT RBCs are unknown.To address this question,we measured the mechanical properties of and changes in SCT RBCs under deoxygenated and acidic environments,which are two typical conditions present in the circulation of athletes undertaking strenuous exercise.The results reveal that SCT RBCs are inherently stiffer than RBCs from non-SCT healthy subjects,and a lower pH further stiffens the SCT cells.Furthermore,at both normal and low pH levels,deoxygenation was found to not be the cause of the stiffness of SCT RBCs.This study confirms that the stiffening of SCT RBCs occurs at a low pH and implies that SCT RBC stiffening could be responsible for vaso-occlusion in SCT athletes during strenuous exercise.Zhensong Xu Yi Zheng Xian Wang Nadine Shehata Chen Wang Shaorong Xie Yu Sun 2016Microsystems & Nanoengineering2016,2,1:2
6Entropy measures of type-2 intuitionistic fuzzy sets and type-2 triangular intuitionistic trapezodial fuzzy sets显示文摘In order to measure the uncertain information of a type-2 intuitionistic fuzzy set(T2IFS), an entropy measure of T2 IFS is presented by using the constructive principles. The proposed entropy measure is also proved to satisfy all of the constructive principles. Further, a novel concept of the type-2 triangular intuitionistic trapezoidal fuzzy set(T2TITr FS) is developed, and a geometric interpretation of the T2 TITr FS is given to comprehend it completely or correctly in a more intuitive way. To deal with a more general uncertain complex system, the constructive principles of an entropy measure of T2 TITr FS are therefore proposed on the basis of the axiomatic definition of the type-2 intuitionisic fuzzy entropy measure. This paper elicits a formula of type-2 triangular intuitionistic trapezoidal fuzzy entropy and verifies that it does satisfy the constructive principles. 20Optimal design scheme based on the segmental transmission line methodology for high-frequency interconnection in 3D micro/nano integration显示文摘With the continuous growth of signal frequency and package density, discontinuity of the high-frequency interconnection in 3 D micro/nano integration becomes unavoidable, which results in serious signal integrity problems. Traditional interconnection design schemes, such as termination and shielding/isolation, cannot meet the requirements under the unified constraints of specific cost, space occupancy, and performance. In this study, a transmission line design optimization scheme based on the segmental transmission line(STL) methodology is proposed. The genetic algorithm is used to select the optimal segment structure parameters of the transmission line to construct an STL with satisfying transmission performance or meet the specific signal amplitude adjustment requirements. This scheme can be adapted to various signal transmission scenarios to significantly improve the signal loss caused by reflection or other negative electromagnetic factors and meet the requirements for the modeling of discontinuous transmission lines.
