| 1 | Individualized Design of the Ventilator Mask based on the Residual Concentration of CO2显示文摘OSAHS(Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome)is a respiratory disease mainly characterized by limited and repeated pauses of breathing in sleep.Currently,the optimal treatment is to apply CPAP(Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)ventilation on the upper airway of the patient through a household respiratory machine.However,if the ventilator mask is designed improperly,it might cause the residue and repeated inhalation of CO2,which will exert an adverse impact on the therapeutic effect.Present research numerically analyzed the CO2 transportation inside a commercial ventilator mask(Mirage SoftGel,ResMed,Australia)based on the reconstructed 3D numerical model of a volunteer's face and performed the improved design of the ventilator mask in terms of the CO2 residual concentration below the nostrils.The fluid dynamic analyses showed that at the end time of expiratory,the CO2 residual concentration below the nostrils is close to 4%.To improve the therapeutic effect,we changed the position of the exhaust holes and found that by moving the exhaust holes to the bottom of the ventilator mask,the CO2 residual concentration below the nostrils would be reduced to no more than 1%.This study established a near physiological computational model and provided a new method for the individualized design of the commercial ventilator mask. | Zhiguo Zhang Zhenxiao Li Yifei Zhang Zhenze Wang Minzhou Luo | 2018 | Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences2018,,11: | 3 |

| 3 | Identification and characterization of BoPUB3: a novel interaction protein with S-locus receptor kinase in Brassica oleracea L.显示文摘Armadillo repeat containing 1 (ARC1) is phosphorylated by S-locus receptor kinase (SRK) and functions as a positive regulator in self-incompatibility response of Brassica. However, ARC1 only causes partial breakdown of the self-incompatibility response, and other SRK downstream factors may also participate in the self-incompatibility signaling pathway. In the present study, to search for SRK downstream targets, a plant U-box protein 3 (BoPUB3) was identified from the stigma of Brassica oleracea L. BoPUB3 was highly expressed in the stigma, and its expression was increased with the stigma development and reached to the highest level in the mature-stage stigma. BoPUB3, a 76.8-kDa protein with 697 amino acids, is a member of the PUB-ARM family and contains three domain characteristics of BoARC1, including a U-box N-terminal domain, a U-box motif, and a C-terminal arm repeat domain. The phylogenic tree showed that BoPUB3 was close to BoARC1. The synteny analysis revealed that B. oleracea chromosomal region containing BoPUB3 had high synteny with the Arabidopsis thaliana chromosomal region containing AtPUB3 (At3G54790). In addition, the subcellular localization analysis showed that BoPUB3 primarily localized in the plasma membrane and also in the cytoplasm. The combination of the yeast two-hybrid and in vitro binding assay showed that both BoPUB3 and BoARC1 could interact with SRK kinase domain, and SRK showed much higher level of β-galactosidase activity in its interaction with BoPUB3 than with BoARC1. | 4 | Linking atomic structural defects to mesoscale properties in crystalline solids using graph neural networks显示文摘Structural defects are abundant in solids,and vital to the macroscopic materials properties.However,a defect-property linkage typically requires significant efforts from experiments or simulations,and often contains limited information due to the breadth of nanoscopic design space.Here we report a graph neural network(GNN)-based approach to achieve direct translation between mesoscale crystalline structures and atom-level properties,emphasizing the effects of structural defects.Our end-to-end method offers great performance and generality in predicting both atomic stress and potential energy of multiple systems with different defects.Furthermore,the approach also precisely captures derivative properties which strictly observe physical laws and reproduces evolution of properties with varying boundary conditions.By incorporating a genetic algorithm,we then design de novo atomic structures with optimum global properties and target local patterns.The method would significantly enhance the efficiency of evaluating atomic behaviors given structural imperfections and accelerates the design process at the meso-level. | Zhenze Yang Markus J.Buehler | 2022 | npj Computational Materials2022,,1: | 2 |

| 9 | Hydro-mechanical behavior of an argillaceous limestone considered as a potential host formation for radioactive waste disposal显示文摘The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission(CNSC), Canada's nuclear regulator, conducts regulatory research in order to develop independent knowledge on safety aspects related to the deep geological disposal of radioactive wastes. In Canada, the Cobourg limestone of the Michigan Basin is currently considered as a potential host formation for geological disposal. The understanding of the hydromechanical behavior of such a host rock is one of the essential requirements for the assessment of its performance as a barrier against radionuclide migration. The excavation of galleries and shafts of a deep geological repository(DGR) can induce damage to the surrounding rock. The excavation damaged zone(EDZ) has higher permeability and reduced strength compared to the undisturbed rock and those factors must be considered in the design and safety assessment of the DGR. The extent and characteristics of the EDZ depend on the size of the opening, the rock type and its properties, and the in situ stresses, among other factors. In addition, the extent and characteristics of the EDZ can change with time due to rock strength degradation, evolution of fractures within the EDZ, and the redistribution of pore pressure around the excavation. In this research project initiated by the CNSC, the authors conducted experimental and theoretical research in order to assess the hydro-mechanical behavior of the Cobourg limestone under undamaged and damaged conditions, both in the short and long terms. The short-term behavior was investigated by a program of triaxial tests with the measurement of permeability evolution on specimens of Cobourg limestone. The authors formulate a coupled hydro-mechanical model to simulate the stress-strain response and evolution of the permeability during those triaxial tests. Using creep and relaxation data from a similar limestone, the model was extended to include its long-term strength degradation. The model successfully simulated both the short-and long-term hydro-mechanical behavior of the limestone during those tests.
