1Puerarin partly counteracts the inflammatory response after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion via activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway显示文摘Puerarin,a major isoflavonoid derived from the Chinese medical herb radix puerariae(Gegen),has been reported to inhibit neuronal apoptosis and play an anti-inflammatory role in focal cerebra ischemia model rats.Recent findings regarding stroke pathophysiology have recognized that anti-inflammation is an important target for the treatment of ischemic stroke.The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway is a highly robust neural-immune mechanism for inflammation control This study was to investigate whether activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway can be involved in the mechanism of inhibiting the inflammatory response during puerarin-induced cerebra ischemia/reperfusion in rats.Results showed that puerarin pretreatment(intravenous injection)reduced the ischemic infarct volume,improved neurological deficit after cerebra ischemia/reperfusion and decreased the levels of interleukin-1β,interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-αin brain tissue.Pretreatment with puerarin(intravenous injection)attenuated the inflammatory response in rats,which was accompanied by janus-activated kinase 2(JAK2)and signal transducers and activators of transcription 3(STAT3)activation and nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB)inhibition.These observations were inhibited by the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine recepto(α7nAchR)antagonistα-bungarotoxin(α-BGT).In addition,puerarin pretreatment increased the expression ofα7nAchR mRNA in ischemic cerebral tissue.These data demonstrate that puerarin pretreatment strongly protects the brain against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury and inhibits the inflammatory response.Our results also indicated that the anti-inflammatory effect of puerarin may partly be mediated through the activation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.Xiaojie Liu Zhigang Mei Jingping Qian Yongbao Zeng Mingzhi Wang 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,34:39
2Sources and characteristics of fine particles over the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea using online single particle aerosol mass spectrometer显示文摘Marine aerosols over the East China Seas are heavily polluted by continental sources. During the Chinese Comprehensive Ocean Experiment in November 2012, size and mass spectra of individual atmospheric particles in the size range from 0.2 to 2.0 μm were measured on board by a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer(SPAMS). The average hourly particle number(PN)was around 4560 ± 3240 in the South Yellow Sea(SYS), 2900 ± 3970 in the North Yellow Sea(NYS), and 1700 ± 2220 in the Bohai Sea(BS). PN in NYS and BS varied greatly over 3 orders of magnitude, while that in SYS varied slightly. The size distributions were fitted with two log-normal modes. Accumulation mode dominated in NYS and BS, especially during episodic periods. Coarse mode particles played an important role in SYS. Particles were classified using an adaptive resonance theory based neural network algorithm(ART-2a). Six particle types were identified with secondary-containing, aged sea-salt, soot-like, biomass burning, fresh sea-salt,and lead-containing particles accounting for 32%, 21%, 18%, 16%, 4%, and 3% of total PN,respectively. Aerosols in BS were relatively enriched in particles from anthropogenic sources compared to SYS, probably due to emissions from more developed upwind regions and indicating stronger influence of continental outflow on marine environment. Variation of source types depended mainly on origins of transported air masses. This study examined rapid changes in PN, size distribution and source types of fine particles in marine atmospheres. 310Be Exposure Ages Obtained From Quaternary Glacial Landforms on the Tibetan Plateau and in the Surrounding Area显示文摘In situ terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide(TCN) exposure dating using ^(10)Be is one of the most successful techniques used to determine the ages of Quaternary deposits and yields data that enable the reconstruction of the Quaternary glacial history of the Tibetan Plateau and the surrounding mountain ranges. Statistical analysis of TCN ^(10)Be exposure ages, helps to reconstruct the history of glacial fluctuations and past climate changes on the Tibetan Plateau, differences in the timing of glacier advances among different regions. However, different versions of the Cosmic-Ray-pr Oduced NUclide Systematics on Earth(CRONUS-Earth) online calculator, which calculates and corrects the TCN ages of Quaternary glacial landforms, yield different results. For convenience in establishing contrasts among regions, in this paper, we recalculate 1848 ^(10)Be exposure ages from the Tibetan Plateau that were published from 1999 to 2017 using version 2.3 of the CRONUS-Earth calculator. We also compare the results obtained for 1594 ^(10)Be exposure ages using different versions(2.2, 2.3 and 3.0) of the CRONUSEarth calculator. The results are as follows.(1) Approximately 97% of the exposure ages are less than 200 ka. A probability density curve of the exposure ages suggests that greater numbers of oscillations emerge during the Holocene, and the peaks correspond to the Little Ice Age, the 8.2 ka and 9.3 ka cold events; the main peak covers the period between 12 and 18 ka.(2) In most areas, the newer versions of the calculator produce older ^(10)Be exposure ages. 4Geochronology and geochemistry of Permo-Triassic sandstones in eastern Jilin Province(NE China): Implications for final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean显示文摘In the eastern part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB) in northeastern(NE) China, scattered outcrops of molasse deposits mark the ending of an orogeny and are crucial for understanding the evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean(PAO). However, the timing of tectonic events and the relationships among these strata remain controversial. To better constrain these geologic events, a comprehensive study of the detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology and geochemistry of the sandstones of the Kaishantun(KST) Formation and Kedao(KD) Group in eastern Jilin Province, NE China, was conducted. The KST Formation is traditionally considered a molasse deposit. The sandstones display low CIA, PIA and high ICV values and low Th/U and Rb/Sr ratios, which suggest that the rocks were derived from an immature intermediate-felsic igneous source and experienced a simple sedimentary recycling history with relatively weak chemical weathering. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from two samples of the KST Formation yields ages of 748-252 Ma, suggesting that the KST Formation was deposited between 254.5 Ma and 252 Ma in Late Permian. The zircons were mainly derived from the continental northern part of the North China Craton(NCC). In contrast, the U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from five samples of the KD Group yields ages of 2611-230 Ma, suggesting that the KD samples were deposited in the Early to Middle Triassic(ca. 248-233 Ma). The detrital zircon ages for the KD samples can be divided into groups with peaks at 2.5 Ga, 1.8 Ga, 800-1000 Ma, 500 Ma and 440-360 Ma, which suggest that the samples were derived from bidirectional provenances in the Jiamusi-Khanka Block and the NCC. These new data,combined with previously published results, suggest that at least three orogenic events occurred in central-eastern Jilin Province during the Early Permian(270-262 Ma), Early Triassic(254-248 Ma) and Middle-Late Triassic(242-227 Ma). The final closure of the PAO occurred during 242-227 Ma in the Middle-Late Triassic along the Changchun-Yanji suture zone. 5Frequent and prolonged nocturnal occupation of port areas by Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis): Forced choice for feeding?显示文摘During the Yangtze Freshwater Dolphin Expedition 2012,Yangtze finless porpoises(Neophocaena asiaeorientalis)were acoustically monitored in 9 port areas at night.During 6566 min of nocturnal monitoring,porpoise sonar was detected for 488 min(7.43%of the total time).Of all 81 encounters,the longest echolocation span obtained was 102.9 min,suggesting frequent and prolonged porpoise occupation of the port areas.A combined total of 2091 click trains were recorded,with 129(6.2%)containing minimum inter-click intervals(ICIs)below 10 ms(termed a buzz).Buzzes with a decrease in ICIs and search and approach phases that resembled feeding echolocation signals accounted for 44.2%(N=52)of all buzzes.Buzzes with an increase in ICIs,suggesting a mirrored prey capture phase,accounted for 20.2%(N=26)and could reflect attempts to locate escaped prey because they were followed by approach-phase feeding buzzes.Anecdotal evidence of porpoises fleeing the proximity of vessels was observed.The recordings indicating clusters of porpoises feeding near the port areas suggest a forced choice for feeding due to the relatively higher prey availability in the port areas compared to other areas in the Yangtze River that are probably overfished.Zhitao WANG Tomonari AKAMATSU Zhigang MEI Lijun DONG Tomohito IMAIZUMI Kexiong WANG Ding WANG 2015Integrative Zoology2015,10,1:6

7Progressive deterioration of the upper respiratory tract and the gut microbiomes in children during the early infection stages of COVID-19显示文摘Children are less susceptible to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and they have manifested lower morbidity and mortality after infection, for which a multitude of mechanisms may be considered. Whether the normal development of the gut-airway microbiome in children is affected by COVID-19 has not been evaluated. Here, we demonstrate that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)infection alters the upper respiratory tract and the gut microbiomes in nine children. The alteration of the microbiome is dominated by the genus Pseudomonas, and it sustains for up to 25e58 days in different individuals. Moreover, the patterns of alternation are different between the upper respiratory tract and the gut. Longitudinal investigation shows that the upper respiratory tract and the gut microbiomes are extremely variable among children during the course of COVID-19. The dysbiosis of microbiome persists in7 of 8 children for at least 19e24 days after discharge from the hospital. 8On-demand assembly of polymeric nanoparticles for longer-blood-circulation and disassembly in tumor for boosting sonodynamic therapy显示文摘Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is one of the promising strategies for tumor therapy, but its application is usually hindered by fast clearance in blood-circulation, abnormal tumor microenvironment, and inefficient generation of reactive oxygen species. To solve these problems, we proposed an on-demand assembly-disassembly strategy, where the assembly is favorable for longer-blood-circulation and then the disassembly in tumor is favorable for boosting SDT. Hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) as the model of organic sonosensitizers were conjugated with hyaluronic acid (HA). Then HA-HMME was mixed with catalase (CAT) and assembled into polymeric nanoparticles (CAT@HA-HMME NPs) with size of ~80 nm. CAT@HA-HMME NPs exhibit good biocompatibility and a longer blood half-time (t1/2 = 4.17 h) which is obviously longer than that (~0.82 h) of HMME molecules. After HA receptor-mediated endocytosis of cancer cells, CAT@HA-HMME NPs can be cleaved by endogenous hyaluronidase, resulting in the on-demand disassembly in tumor to release HA-HMME molecules and CAT. The CAT catalyzes the endogenous H_(2)O_(2) into O_(2) to relieve the hypoxic microenvironment, and the released HA-HMME exhibits a higher ROS generation ability, greatly boosting SDT for the inhibition of tumor growth. 15Design of single-phased magnesium alloys with typically high solubility rare earth elements for biomedical applications:Concept and proof显示文摘Rare earth elements(REEs)have been long applied in magnesium alloys,among which the mischmetal-containing WE43 alloy has already got the CE mark approval for clinical application.A considerable amount of REEs(7 wt%)is needed in that multi-phased alloy to achieve a good combination of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.However,the high complex RE addition accompanied with multiple second phases may bring the concern of biological hazards.Single-phased Mg-RE alloys with simpler compositions were proposed to improve the overall performance,i.e.,“Simpler alloy,better performance”.The single-phased microstructure can be successfully obtained with typical high-solubility REEs(Ho,Er or Lu)through traditional smelting,casting and extrusion in a wide compositional range.A good corrosion resistance with a macroscopically uniform corrosion mode was guaranteed by the homogeneously single-phased microstructure.The bimodal-grained structure with plenty of sub-grain microstructures allow us to minimize the RE addition to<1 wt%,without losing mechanical properties.The single-phased Mg-RE alloys show comparable mechanical properties to the clinically-proven Mg-based implants.They exhibited similar in-vitro and in-vivo performances(without local or systematic toxicity in SD-rats)compared to a high purity magnesium.In addition,metal elements in our single-phased alloys can be gradually excreted through the urinary system and digestive system,showing no consistent accumulation of RE in main organs,i.e.,less burden on organs.The novel concept in this study focuses on the simplification of Mg-RE based alloys for biomedical purpose,and other biodegradable metals with single-phased microstructures are expected to be explored.Dong Bian Xiao Chu Jin Xiao Zhipei Tong He Huang Qinggong Jia Jianing Liu Wenting Li Hui Yu Yue He Limin Ma Xiaolan Wang Mei Li Tao Yang Wenhan Huang Chi Zhang Mengyu Yao Yu Zhang Zhigang Xu Shaokang Guan Yufeng Zheng 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,4:1

19Effects of temperature and salinity on the asexual reproduction of Aurelia coerulea polyps显示文摘Aurelia coerulea polyp is an important stage in the outbreaks of this species.To test the combined effects of salinity and temperature on the survival and asexual reproduction of polyps,we maintained 864 polyps at various salinities(15,25,33,and 40)and temperatures(9,12,15,18,21,and 24℃).Polyps could mostly survive in all treatment combinations except in salinity 15 treatments with low temperatures(9-15℃).Budding occurred at all temperatures(9-24℃),while strobilation only occurred at the low temperatures(9-15℃).The range of 12-15℃was suitable for strobilation and ephyrae release.The optimal range of salinity for asexual reproduction was 25-33.Low(15)or high(40)salinity could significantly reduce the numbers of new buds or ephyrae,and low salinity of 15 retarded and even prevented strobilation at low temperatures.The optimal treatment for budding and strobilation was 21℃-salinity 25 and 12℃-salinity 33,respectively.Salinity had less of an impact than temperature on asexual reproduction,except for the polyps in high or low osmotic pressure conditions.XING Yongze LIU Qian ZHANG Mei ZHEN Yu MI Tiezhu YU Zhigang 2020Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,1:1
20Thresholds of population persistence for the Yangtze finless porpoise:implications for conservation managements显示文摘The Yangtze finless porpoise(Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis),a critically endangered species,is the only cetacean species in the Yangtze River following the functional extinction of baiji(Lipotes vexillifer).To inform conservation actions,two important questions need to be addressed:what is the threshold value of survival rate,and what is the threshold value of population size?We calculate the instantaneous rate of population increase(¯r)for the Yangtze finless porpoise for various combinations of the calf and the non-calf survival rates.We also test the probability of extinction for different minimum carrying capacities for 100 and 500 years using a stable population model.The threshold value of the non-calf survival rate is never lower than 0.869,but current estimates from field data have been far below this threshold.Our model based on extinction probability and carrying capacity suggests that the threshold for the population size to persist 100 years required 113 animals,and 472 animals are required to persist 500 years.Therefore,we recommend establishing an ex situ reserve network to guarantee the minimum 100-year carrying capacity.To ensure the long-term population viability,we suggest establishing two in situ reserve zones in two lakes and their surrounding reserves to meet a minimum 500-year carrying capacity.In addition,measures to avoid further habitat fragmentation should be priority.Zhigang MEI Mao CHEN Yi HAN Yujiang HAO Jinsong ZHENG Kexiong WANG Ding WANG 2021Integrative Zoology2021,16,4:1
