| 1 | Contemporary crustal movement of continental China obtained by global positioning system(GPS) measurements显示文摘We obtain a unified horizontal velocity field of continental China and vicinity through measurements at 81 GPS stations provided by the National Key Infrastructure Project, Crustal Movement Observation Network of China. The velocity field delineates patterns of movements and deformation of active crustal blocks in continental China under the Eurasia-fixed reference frame. The space-based geodesy also clearly shows for the first time the horizontal movementand deformation of continental China induced by indentation of the Indian plate. | 3 | Experimental study on mechanical behaviors of pseudo-ductile cementitious composites under biaxial compression显示文摘Experimental investigation was conducted to characterize the responses of pseudo-ductile cementitious composites (PDCCs) when subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression.The PDCCs is a class of fiber reinforced cementitious composites with ultra-high ductility by using a low volume fraction (2%) of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber.Two different strength grades of PDCC were examined with cubic specimen size of 100 mm in the tests.The specimens were loaded with a servo-hydraulic jack at different stress ratios.The principle stresses and strains of the specimens were recorded,and the failure modes with various stress states were examined.The test results indicated that the ultimate strength of PDCCs increased due to the lateral confinement in the other principal stress direction,and the maximum ultimate strength occurred at the biaxial stress ratio of 0.25,which was very different from common concrete material.For the PDCC specimens,the biaxial strength may be lower than the uniaxial strength when subjected to biaxial compression with the stress ratio of 1.0,and the failure mode showed a shear-type failure because of the bridging effect of fibers.Finally,a failure criterion was proposed for PDCCs under biaxial compression. | ZHOU JiaJia PAN JinLong LEUNG Christopher Kin Ying LI ZongJin | 2013 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2013,56,4: | 8 |
| 4 | The uplifting process of the Bogda Mountain during the Cenozoic and its tectonic implication显示文摘The Tianshan Mountains have undergone its initial orogeny, extension adjusting and re-orogeny since the Late Paleozoic. The re-orogeny and uplifting process of the orogeny in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic are two of most important events in the geological evolution of Euro-Asian continent, which resulted in the formation of the present range-and-basin pattern in topography of the Tianshan Mountains and its adjacent areas. Thermochronology results by the method of fission-track dating of apatite suggest three obvious uplifting stages of the Bogad Mountain Chain re-orogeny during the Cenozoic, i.e. 5.6-19 Ma, 20-30 Ma, and 42-47 Ma. The strongest uplifting stage of the mountain is the second one at 20 -30 Ma, when the mountain uplifted as a whole, and the beginning of re-orogeny was no less than 65 Ma. Furthermore, our studies also show that the uplifting types of the mountain are variable in the dif-ferent time periods, including uplifting of mountain as a whole and differential uplifting. | 6 | Multistage Deformation in the Northeastern Segment of the Jiangshao Fault (Suture) Belt: Constraints for the Relationship between the Yangtze Plate and the Cathaysia Old Land显示文摘Multistage deformation events have occurred in the northeastern Jiangshao Fault (Suture) Belt. The earliest two are ductile deformation events. The first is the ca. 820 Ma top-to-the-northwest ductile thrusting, which directly resulted from the collision between the Cathaysia Old Land and the Chencai Arc (?) during the Late Neoproterozoic, and the Jiangnan Orogenic Belt that formed as the ocean closed between the Yangtze Plate and the jointed Cathaysia Old Land and the Chencai Arc due to continuous compression. The second is the ductile left-lateral strike-slipping that occurred in the latest Early Paleozoic. Since the Jinning period, all deformation events represent the reactivation or inversion of intraplate structures due to the collisions between the North China and Yangtze plates during the Triassic and between the Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates during the Cenozoic. In the Triassic, brittle right-lateral strike-slipping and subsequent top-to-the south thrusting occurred along the whole northeastern Jiangshao Fault Zone because of the collision between the North China and Yangtze plates. In the Late Mesozoic, regional extension took place across southeastern China. In the Cenozoic, the collision between the Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates resulted in brittle thrusts along the whole Jiangnan Old land in the Miocene. The Jiangshao Fault Belt is a weak zone in the crust with long history, and its reactivation is one of important characteristics of the deformation in South China; however, late-stage deformation events did not occur beyond the Jiangnan Old Land and most of them are parallel to the strike of the Old Land, which is similar to the Cenozoic deformation in Central Asia. | 7 | Meso-Cenozoic Evolution of the Tanlu Fault and Formation of Sedimentary Basins显示文摘There are a group of large and medium-scale Meso-Cenozoic petroliferous basins along both sides of the Tanlu fault or within the fault zone, e.g., the Songliao basin, the Bohai Bay basin and the Subei-Yellow Sea basin. As shown by studies of the structural types, sedimentary formations, volcanic activities, tectonic evolution as well as the time-space relationship between the Tanlu fault zone and the basins, the formation and distribution of the basins are controlled by the movement of the Tanlu fault. | 10 | Human embryonic stem cells-derived endothelial cell therapy facilitates kidney regeneration by stimulating renal resident stem cell proliferation in acute kidney injury显示文摘Endothelial cell therapy has been implicated to enhance tissue regeneration and vascularization in ischemic kidney. However, no published study has yet examined direct effects of endothelial cell treatment in kidney recovery. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of endothelial cells in a mouse model with acute kidney injury (AKI). Thus, human embryonic stem cells-derived endothelial cells (hESC-ECs) labeled with a reporter system encoding a double fusion reporter gene for firefly luciferase (Fluc) and green fluorescent protein (GFP) were characterized by Fluc imaging and immunofluoresence staining. Cultured hESC-ECs (1×106) were injected into ischemic kidney shortly after AKI. Survival of the transplanted hESC-ECs was monitored in vivo from day 1 to 14 after endothelial cell transplantation and potential impact of hESC-EC treatment on renal regeneration was assessed by histological analyses. We report that a substantial level of bioluminescence activity was detected 24 h after hESC-EC injection followed by a gradual decline from 1 to 14 d. Human ESC-ECs markedly accelerated kidney cell proliferation in response to ischaemia-induced damage, indicated by an elevated number of BrdU+ cells. Co-expression of Sca-1, a kidney stem cell proliferation marker, and BrdU further suggested that the observed stimulation in renal cell regeneration was, at least in part, due to increased proliferation of renal resident stem cells especially within the medullary cords and arteriole. Differentiation of hESC-ECs to smooth muscle cells was also observed at an early stage of kidney recovery. | 11 | Study on the transverse structures across Taiwan Strait显示文摘The mountain ranges are almost NE- or NNE-trending in mainland and Taiwan island across the strait. But a number of correspondent transverse structures across Taiwan Strait have been identified on the basis of morphology, surface structure, deep seismic survey and gravity field etc. Moreover, it is inferred from the square or/and rectangular shape of the isoseist maps of 8 M≥6 earthquakes occurring in the western foothill plain of Taiwan that there is an apparent segmentation of the Taiwan Island along the N-S orientation. This has been verified from the GPS's results of the ground motions measured during the Chi-Chi earthquake in 1999. As a matter of fact, the transverse structures within the Taiwan Island could be correlated with more salient NW- and EW-trending structures in the mainland of Fujian than in Taiwan. The investigation of the transverse structures across Taiwan Strait is conducive to realizing the geology within the strait. | 12 | Preparation of Metakaolin Based Geopolymer and Its Three-dimensional Pore Structural Characterization显示文摘Three types of pure geopolymer pastes(poly-sialate PS, poly- sialate-siloxo PSS, and polysialate-siloxo PSDS) were fi rst prepared by alkali(Na OH and KOH) activated metakaolin. Then a void space network was employed to simulate the 3-D pore-throat distribution across the unit cell of the various hardened geopolymer pastes with reference to their experimental mercury intrusion curves. Based on the simulated 3-D pore-throat structure models, a wide range of pore-level properties such as porosity, connectivity, permeability and tortuosity of various geopolymer pastes were calculated. The 3-D structural model and calculated parameters showed that most of the pores in Na-PS geopolymer paste was very small size pores ranging from 0 to 100 nm. A few very large pores were spread amongst the small pores, resulting in a very high penetration pressure, permeability resistance. Unlike Na-PS geopolymer paste, pore size with medium size of Na-PSS, K-PS and K-PSS geopolymer pastes distributed uniformly across the unit cell, and the size changes of adjacent pores in the 3 geopolymer pastes were little, producing higher penetration pressure, lower permeability, smaller connectivity and larger tortuosity. | 14 | Basement Structure and Properties of the Western Junggar Basin, China显示文摘A comprehensive geophysical profile stretching from Qingyijing at the southern edge of the Junggar Basin to Ubara on the northern margin of the Junggar Basin was conducted in an attempt to probe the crustal structure of the western Junggar Basin(hereafter referred to simply as ‘the Basin'), and, in particular, the structure and property of the Basin's crystalline basement. A survey using seismically converted waves was conducted along this profile to determine the characteristics of the P-and Swave velocities typical of the crust and uppermost mantle. A joint inversion of gravitation and aeromagnetic data was also performed to acquire the density and magnetization intensity values found beneath the western Basin. This research revealed that the Basin is composed of the so-called Manasi terrain in the south, and the Wulungu terrain in the north. Their boundary is located along the WNW-trending Dishuiquan-Sangequan suture, linking the NE-striking Da'erbute suture(DS) in the west, and the WNWtrending Kalameili suture(KS) in the east. In its northern part, the Wulungu-type terrain has a doublelayered basement, of which the upper layer is a folded basement of Hercynian orogenic origin, and the lower layer is a crystalline basement of Middle–Upper Proterozoic age. The southern part of the Basin, i.e., the Manasi terrain, has a single-layered crystalline basement. | 15 | Quantitative Characterization and Elastic Properties of Interfacial Transition Zone around Coarse Aggregate in Concrete显示文摘Backscattered electron images(BSE) obtained by scanning electron microscope was used to quantitatively characterize the microstructure of interfacial transition zone(ITZ) in concrete. Influences of aggregate size(5, 10, 20, and 30 mm), water to cement ratio(0.23, 0.35 and 0.53) and curing time(from 3d to 90d) on the microstructure of interfacial transition zone between coarse aggregate and bulk cement matrix were investigated. The volume percentage of detectable porosity and unhydrated cement in ITZ was quantitatively analyzed and compared with that in the matrix of various concretes. Nanoindentation technology was applied to obtain the elastic properties of ITZ and matrix, and the elastic modulus of concrete was then calculated based on the Lu & Torquato model and self-consistence scheme by using the ITZ thickness and elastic modulus obtained from this investigation. The experimental results demonstrated that the microstructure and thickness of ITZ in concrete vary with a variety of factors, like aggregate size, water to cement ratio and curing time.
