Polyethylene glycol microspheres loaded with irinotecan for arterially directed embolic therapy of metastatic liver cancer显示文摘AIM To study tumor response, and tolerability of arterially directed embolic therapy(ADET) with polyethylene glycol embolics loaded with irinotecan for the treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases(CRC-LM). Secondary objectives were to monitor quality of life, time to progression and survival of patients.METHODS Patients were included in the study if they were affected by CRC-LM, refractory to systemic chemotherapy, treated with ADET using polyethylene glycol embolics, and had liver involvement < 50%. Tumor response, performance status(PS), tumor marker antigens, and quality of life(QoL) were monitored at 1, 3 and 6 mo after ADET. QoL was assessed with the Palliative Performance Scale(PPS).RESULTS We treated 50 consecutive CRC-LM patients with ADET using polyethylene glycol embolics. Their tumor response one month after ADET was: 28% of complete response(CR), 48% of partial response(PR), 8% stable disease(SD), and 16% of progression. Tumor response 3 mo after ADET was CR 24%, PR 38%, SD 19% and progression disease(PD) 19%. Tumor response 6 mo after ADET was CR 18%, PR 44%, SD 21% and PD 18%. QoL was 90% PPS at each time point. Median time to progression for patients who progressed was 2.5 mo(range 0.8-6). Median follow-up was 14 mo(0.8-25 range). ADETs were performed with no complications. Observed side effects(mild or moderate intensity) were: Pain in 32% of patients, increase of transaminase levels in 20% and fever in 14%, whereas 30% of patients did not complain any adverse event. CONCLUSION The treatment of unresectable CRC-LM with ADET using polyethylene glycol microspheres loaded with irinotecan was effective in tumor response and resulted in mild toxicity, and good QoL.Giammaria Fiorentini Riccardo Carandina Donatella Sarti Michele Nardella Odysseas Zoras Stefano Guadagni Riccardo Inchingolo Massimiliano Nestola Alessandro Felicioli Daniel Barnes Navarro Fernando Munoz Gomez Camillo Aliberti 2017World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2017,9,9:6
Can probiotics benefit children with autism spectrum disorders?显示文摘Children with autism are commonly affected by gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of probiotics in this population, as it hypothetically may help to improve bowel habits and the behavioral and social functioning of these individuals. The gut microbiome plays an important role in the pathophysiology of organic as well as functional gastrointestinal disorders. Microbial modification with the use of antibiotics, probiotics, and fecal transplantation have been effective in the treatment of conditions such as recurrent Clostridium difficile infection, pouchitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. The present review presents a number of reported clinical, immunological and microbiomerelated changes seen in children with autism compared to normally developed children. It also discusses gut inflammation, permeability concerns, and absorption abnormalities that may contribute to these problems. Most importantly, it discusses evidence, from human and animal studies, of a potential role of probiotics in the treatment of gastrointestinal symptoms in children with autism.fernando Navarro Yuying Liu Jon Marc Rhoads 2016World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,46:4
Estimation of rainfall thresholds for shallow landslides in the Sierra Madre Oriental, northeastern Mexico显示文摘Landslides induced by prolonged rainfalls are frequent mass movements along the northeastern portion of the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico, causing significant damage to infrastructure. In this work,we have studied the connection between rainfall and landslides in the Santa Rosa Canyon,a catchment located in the northeastern Mexico.A landslide database triggered by major storms and hurricanes that have hit the region over the past 30 years was analyzed.A total of 92 rainfall events in the Santa Rosa Canyon were studied to determine the amount of precipitation needed to trigger shallow landslides. For each event the duration(D,in hours)and the cumulated rainfall event(E,in mm)were determined by using historical rainfall data from weather stations located near the study area.We have proposed an ED threshold for rainfall-induced landslides with durations 0.5Jorge A.Salinas-Jasso Fernando Velasco-Tapia Ignacio Navarro de León Ricardo A.Salinas-Jasso Efraín Alva-Nino 2020Journal of Mountain Science2020,17,7:2

Hypoallergenic formula with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GGfor babies with colic:A pilot study of recruitment, retention, and fecal biomarkers显示文摘AIM To investigate recruitment, retention, and estimatesfor effects of formula supplementation withLactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) on inflammatorybiomarkers and fecal microbial community in infants withcolic.METHODS: A prospective, double-blind, placebocontrolledtrial was conducted in otherwise healthyinfants with colic. We screened 74 infants and randomizedand analyzed results in 20 infants [9 receivingLGG (LGG+) and 11 not receiving LGG (LGG-)]. LGG wasincorporated in the formula (Nutramigen?) (minimum of3 × 10^7 CFU/d) in the LGG+ group. Fecal microbiota andinflammatory biomarkers, including fecal calprotectin(FC), plasma cytokines, circulating regulatory T cells(Tregs), and crying + fussing time were analyzed todetermine optimal time points and effect sizes for alarger trial.RESULTS: Recruitment in this population was slow, withabout 66% of eligible infants willing to enroll; subjectretention was better (75%). These rates were influencedby parents' reluctance to volunteer their infant for aclinical trial and by their tendency to change formulas. The maximal difference of crying + fussing time wasobserved at day 14, comparing the 2 groups, with amean difference of -91 (95%CI: -76, 259) min (P = NS).FC showed no significant difference, but the optimaltime to determine a potential effect was at day 90 [witha mean difference of 121 (95%CI: -48, 291) μg/g stool],observing a lower level of FC in the LGG+ group. Thefecal microbial communities were chaotic, as determinedby Shannon's diversity index and not apparently influencedby the probiotic. No significant change wasobserved in plasma inflammatory cytokines or Tregs, comparing LGG+ to LGG- groups.CONCLUSION: Designing future colic trials involving aprobiotic-supplemented formula for infants in the UnitedStates will require consideration for difficult enrollment.Infants with colic have major variations in feal microbiotaand calprotectin, both of which improve with time, withoptimal time points for measurement at days 14 and 90after treatment.Nicole Y Fatheree Yuying Liu Michael Ferris Melissa Van Arsdall Valarie McMurtry Marcela Zozaya Chunyan Cai Mohammad H Rahbar Manouchehr Hessabi Ta Vu Christine Wong Juleen Min Dat Q Tran Fernando Navarro Wallace Gleason Sara Gonzalez J Marc Rhoads 2016World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology2016,7,1:1

Advances in cellular technology in the hematology field: What have we learned so far?显示文摘Despite the advances in the hematology field, blood transfusion-related iatrogenesis is still a major issue to be considered during such procedures due to blood antigenic incompatibility. This places pluripotent stem cells as a possible ally in the production of more suitable blood products. The present review article aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the state-of-theart concerning the differentiation of both embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells to hematopoietic cell lines. Here, we review the most recently published protocols to achieve the production of blood cells for future application in hemotherapy, cancer therapy and basic research.Gustavo Torres de Souza Claudineia Pereira Maranduba Camila Maurmann de Souza Danielle Luciana Aurora Soares do Amaral Francisco Carlos da Guia Rafaella de Souza Salomao Zanette Joao Vitor Paes Rettore Natana Chaves Rabelo Lucas Mendes Nascimento Icaro Franca Navarro Pinto Julia Boechat Farani Abrahao Elias Hallack Neto Fernando de Sa Silva Carlos Magno da Costa Maranduba Angelo Atalla 2015World Journal of Stem Cells2015,7,1:0
Novel insights into D-Pinitol based therapies:a link between tau hyperphosphorylation and insulin resistance显示文摘Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the amyloid accumulation in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease is mainly mediated by the phosphorylation and aggregation of tau protein.Among the multiple causes of tau hyperphosphorylation, brain insulin resistance has generated much attention, and inositols as insulin sensitizers, are currently considered candidates for drug development. The present narrative review revises the interactions between these three elements:Alzheimer’s disease-tau-inositols,which can eventually identify targets for new disease modifiers capable of bringing hope to the millions of people affected by this devastating disease.Dina Medina-Vera Antonio Jesús López-Gambero Juan Antonio Navarro Carlos Sanjuan Elena Baixeras Juan Decara Fernando Rodríguez de Fonseca 2024Neural Regeneration Research2024,19,2:0
