Failure mechanism and coupled static-dynamic loading theory in deep hard rock mining: A review显示文摘Rock failure phenomena, such as rockburst, slabbing(or spalling) and zonal disintegration, related to deep underground excavation of hard rocks are frequently reported and pose a great threat to deep mining.Currently, the explanation for these failure phenomena using existing dynamic or static rock mechanics theory is not straightforward. In this study, new theory and testing method for deep underground rock mass under coupled static-dynamic loading are introduced. Two types of coupled loading modes,i.e.'critical static stress + slight disturbance' and 'elastic static stress + impact disturbance',are proposed, and associated test devices are developed.Rockburst phenomena of hard rocks under coupled static-dynamic loading are successfully reproduced in the laboratory, and the rockburst mechanism and related criteria are demonstrated. The results of true triaxial unloading compression tests on granite and red sandstone indicate that the unloading can induce slabbing when the confining pressure exceeds a certain threshold, and the slabbing failure strength is lower than the shear failure strength according to the conventional Mohr-Column criterion.Numerical results indicate that the rock unloading failure response under different in situ stresses and unloading rates can be characterized by an equivalent strain energy density. In addition,we present a new microseismic source location method without premeasuring the sound wave velocity in rock mass, which can efficiently and accurately locate the rock failure in hard rock mines. Also,a new idea for deep hard rock mining using a non-explosive continuous mining method is briefly introduced.Xibing Li Fengqiang Gong Ming Tao Longjun Dong Kun Du Chunde Ma Zilong Zhou Tubing Yin 2017Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2017,9,4:68
Numerical simulation of hydraulic fracturing and associated microseismicity using finite-discrete element method显示文摘Hydraulic fracturing(HF) technique has been extensively used for the exploitation of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. HF enhances the connectivity of less permeable oil and gas-bearing rock formations by fluid injection, which creates an interconnected fracture network and increases the hydrocarbon production. Meanwhile, microseismic(MS) monitoring is one of the most effective approaches to evaluate such stimulation process. In this paper, the combined finite-discrete element method(FDEM) is adopted to numerically simulate HF and associated MS. Several post-processing tools, including frequency-magnitude distribution(b-value), fractal dimension(D-value), and seismic events clustering, are utilized to interpret numerical results. A non-parametric clustering algorithm designed specifically for FDEM is used to reduce the mesh dependency and extract more realistic seismic information.Simulation results indicated that at the local scale, the HF process tends to propagate following the rock mass discontinuities; while at the reservoir scale, it tends to develop in the direction parallel to the maximum in-situ stress.Qi Zhao Andrea Lisjak Omid Mahabadi Qinya Liu Giovanni Grasselli 2014Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2014,6,6:8
Acoustic emission monitoring of rockbursts during TBM-excavated headrace tunneling at Jinping Ⅱ hydropower station显示文摘To better understand the mechanical properties of marble at Jinping II hydropower station, this paper examines the changes of brittle rocks in excavation damaged zones(EDZs) before and after excavation of tunnel with the tunnel boring machine(TBM). The paper attempts to employ the acoustic emission(AE) to study the AE characteristics and distribution of rockburst before and after TBM-excavated tunnel. It is known that the headrace tunnel #2, excavated by the drill-and-blast(D&B) method, is ahead of the headrace tunnel #3 that is excavated by TBM method. The experimental sub-tunnel #2–1, about 2000 m in depth and 13 m in diameter, between the two tunnels is scheduled. In the experimental sub-tunnel #2–1, a large number of experimental boreholes are arranged, and AE sensors are installed within 10 m apart from the wall of the headrace tunnel #3. By tracking the microseismic signals in rocks, the location, frequency, quantity, scope and intensity of the microseismic signals are basically identifed. It is observed that the AE signals mainly occur within 5 m around the rock wall, basically lasting for one day before tunnel excavation and a week after excavation. Monitoring results indicate that the rockburst signals are closely related to rock stress adjustment. The rock structure has a rapid self-adjustment capacity before and after a certain period of time during tunneling. The variations of rock stresses would last for a long time before reaching a fnal steady state. Based on this, the site-specifc support parameters for the deep tunnels can be accordingly optimized.Wuwei Cheng Wenyou Wang Shiqiang Huang Peng Ma 2013Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2013,5,6:6
Determination of the maximum allowable gas pressure for an underground gas storage salt cavern——A case study of Jintan,China显示文摘Increasing the allowable gas pressure of underground gas storage(UGS) is one of the most effective methods to increase its working gas capacity. In this context, hydraulic fracturing tests are implemented on the target formation for the UGS construction of Jintan salt caverns, China, in order to obtain the minimum principal in situ stress and the fracture breakdown pressure. Based on the test results, the maximum allowable gas pressure of the Jintan UGS salt cavern is calibrated. To determine the maximum allowable gas pressure, KING-1 and KING-2 caverns are used as examples. A three-dimensional(3D)geomechanical model is established based on the sonar data of the two caverns with respect to the features of the target formation. New criteria for evaluating gas penetration failure and gas seepage are proposed. Results show that the maximum allowable gas pressure of the Jintan UGS salt cavern can be increased from 17 MPa to 18 MPa(i.e. a gradient of about 18 k Pa/m at the casing shoe depth). Based on numerical results, a field test with increasing maximum gas pressure to 18 MPa has been carried out in KING-1 cavern. Microseismic monitoring has been conducted during the test to evaluate the safety of the rock mass around the cavern. Field monitoring data show that KING-1 cavern is safe globally when the maximum gas pressure is increased from 17 MPa to 18 MPa. This shows that the geomechanical model and criteria proposed in this context for evaluating the maximum allowable gas pressure are reliable.Tongtao Wang Jianjun Li Gang Jing Qingqing Zhang Chunhe Yang J.J.K.Daemen 2019Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,2:4
Time-reverse location of microseismic sources in viscoelastic orthotropic anisotropic medium based on attenuation compensation显示文摘Time reversal is a key component of time-reverse migration and source location using wavefield extrapolation. The implementation of time reversal depends on the time symmetry of wave equations in acoustic and elastic media. This symmetry in time is no longer valid in attenuative medium. Not only the velocity is anisotropic in shale oil and gas reservoirs, but also the attenuation is usually anisotropic, which can be characterized by viscoelastic orthotropic media. In this paper, the fractional order viscoelastic anisotropic wave equation is used to decouple the energy dissipation and the velocity dispersion.By changing the sign of the dissipation term during backpropagation, the anisotropic attenuation is compensated and the time symmetry is restored. The attenuation compensation time-reverse location algorithm can eff ectively locate the source in viscoelastic orthotropic media.Compared to cases without attenuation compensation or using isotropic attenuation compensation, this method can remove location error caused by anisotropic attenuation and improve the imaging eff ect of the source. This paper verifi es the eff ectiveness of the method through theoretical analysis and model testing.Tang Jie Liu Ying-Chang Wen Lei Li Cong 2020Applied Geophysics2020,17,4:3
Propagation patterns of microseismic waves in rock strata during mining:an experimental study显示文摘Microseismic monitoring has been widely used in mines for monitoring and predicting dynamic disasters such as rockbursts and waterbursts. However, to develop high-precision microseismic monitoring systems, the propagation patterns of microseismic waves under complex geological conditions must be elucidated. To achieve this aim, a simulation model of a typical coalmine was designed using similar materials according to the similarity theory to simulate the mining process. Geophones were embedded into the model to detect the propagation of elastic waves from microseisms. The results show that in an unmined solid rock mass, the wave velocity in shallow rock strata is mainly affected by geologically weak planes, whereas in deep strata it is affected mainly by the density of the rock mass. During propagation, the amplitude first decreases and then increases rapidly with increasing propagation distance from the coal layer. After mining, our results indicate that the goaf causes significant attenuation of the wave velocity. After the goaf was backfilled, the velocity attenuation is reduced to some extent but not eliminated. The results of this study can be used as guidelines for designing and applying microseismic monitoring systems in mines.Dong Li Jun-fei Zhang Cun-wen Wang Fu-xing Jiang 2019International Journal of Minerals,Metallurgy and Materials2019,26,5:3
Activation characteristics analysis on concealed fault in the excavating coal roadway based on microseismic monitoring technique显示文摘In order to effectively monitor the concealed fault activation process in excavation activities, based on the actual condition of a working face containing faults with high outburst danger in Xin Zhuangzi mine in Huainan, China, we carried out all-side tracking and monitoring on the fault activation process and development trend in excavation activities by establishing a microseismic monitoring system. The results show that excavation activities have a rather great influence on the fault activation. With the working face approaching the fault, the fault activation builds up and the outburst danger increases; when the excavation activities finishes, the fault activation tends to be stable. The number of microseismic events are corresponding to the intensity of fault activation, and the distribution rules of microseismic events can effectively determine the fault occurrence in the mine. Microseismic monitoring technique is accurate in terms of detecting geologic tectonic activities, such as fault activations lying ahead during excavation activities. By utilizing this technique, we can determine outburst danger in excavation activities in time and accordingly take effective countermeasures to prevent and reduce the occurrence of outburst accidents.Liu Chao Li Shugang Cheng Cheng Xue Junhua 2017International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2017,27,5:2
An improved empirical green function method to extract microseismic signals显示文摘In mining, reservoir impoundment and hydraulic fracturing exploitation, the induced microseismic clusters may present complex waveforms at receivers since the individual events generally arrive very close. And the routine methods for arrival picking are insufficiently efficient due to these strong influences. Here, we modified the empirical green function method and applied it to extract the green functions and the radiation coefficients of microseismic events with the largest energy in clusters.Multiple-channel records were used to estimate an 'average' source spectrum and then the 'average' source wavelet was removed from the records by deconvolution. We applied this method to the real data, and the result indicated clear improvement in extracting the dominant event of the clusters.Dayong Yu Pan Wang 2019Geodesy and Geodynamics2019,10,1:1
Downhole Microseismic Source Location Based on a Multi-Dimensional DIRECT Algorithm for Unconventional Oil and Gas Reservoir Exploration显示文摘Downhole microseismic data has the significant advantages of high signal-to-noise ratio and well-developed P and S waves and the core component of microseismic monitoring is microseismic event location associated with hydraulic fracturing in a relatively high confidence level and accuracy. In this study,we present a multidimensional DIRECT inversion method for microseismic locations and applicability tests over modeling data based on a downhole microseismic monitoring system.Synthetic tests inidcate that the objective function of locations can be defined as a multi-dimensional matrix space by employing the global optimization DIRECT algorithm, because it can be run without the initial value and objective function derivation, and the discretely scattered objective points lead to an expeditious contraction of objective functions in each dimension. This study shows that the DIRECT algorithm can be extensively applied in real downhole microseismic monitoring data from hydraulic fracturing completions. Therefore, the methodology, based on a multidimensional DIRECT algorithm, can provide significant high accuracy and convergent efficiency as well as robust computation for interpretable spatiotemporal microseismic evolution, which is more suitable for real-time processing of a large amount of downhole microseismic monitoring data.YIN Qifeng TAO Pengfei ZHENG Shuo HE Qing AN Yanfei GUO Quanshi 2019Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2019,93,3:1
Transfer learning framework for multi-scale crack type classification with sparse microseismic networks显示文摘Rock fracture mechanisms can be inferred from moment tensors(MT)inverted from microseismic events. However,MT can only be inverted for events whose waveforms are acquired across a network of sensors. This is limiting for underground mines where the microseismic stations often lack azimuthal coverage. Thus, there is a need for a method to invert fracture mechanisms using waveforms acquired by a sparse microseismic network. Here,we present a novel,multi-scale framework to classify whether a rock crack contracts or dilates based on a single waveform. The framework consists of a deep learning model that is initially trained on 2400000+manually labelled field-scale seismic and microseismic waveforms acquired across 692 stations.Transfer learning is then applied to fine-tune the model on 300000+MT-labelled labscale acoustic emission waveforms from 39 individual experiments instrumented with different sensor layouts, loading, and rock types in training. The optimal model achieves over 86%F-score on unseen waveforms at both the lab-and field-scale.This model outperforms existing empirical methods in classification of rock fracture mechanisms monitored by a sparse microseismic network. This facilitates rapid assessment of,and early warning against, various rock engineering hazard such as induced earthquakes and rock bursts.Arnold Yuxuan Xie Bing QLi 2024International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2024,34,2:0
Arrival picking method for microseismic phases based on curve fi tting显示文摘Microseismic phase detection and arrival picking are critical steps in the processing of hydraulic fracturing microseismic monitoring data.As the signal-to-noise ratios of P-and S-waves diff er because of the infl uence of focal mechanisms, geometry, and background noise, diffi culties are introduced in the eff ective discrimination of seismic phases and the accurate acquisition of arrivals in conventional processing methods. In this paper,we propose a method for identifying microseismic phase arrival time by comprehensively analyzing the variation of moveout curves and combining the intra-event waveform similarities with the energy ratio of multitrace signals.First,a curve-fi tting formula is constructed with perforation arrivals, and event detection is achieved by adopting an energy-weighted similarity coeffi cient that seeks plausible fi tting curves with a sliding time window in continuous microseismic recordings. Then, the P-and S-waves are separated by the fitting parameters. The known arrival time trend of the microseismic phase is employed to calculate residual time corrections. Finally, the accurate arrival results of the microseismic phases can be obtained by picking the arrivals of stacked traces. The reliability and eff ectiveness of the proposed method for microseismic phase detection and arrival picking were determined through tests using field data.Arrival results indicate that the proposed method can improve accuracy compared with the traditional energy ratio method.Yu Zhi-Chao Yu Jing Feng Fang-Fang Tan Yu-Yang Hou Gui-Ting He Chuan 2020Applied Geophysics2020,17,3:0
Estimation of fracturing mechanisms by the ratio of radiated energy between S and P waves of microseismic events during mining in metal mines显示文摘In the mining process of deep metal mines, diff erent types of rock mass instability failures are caused by strong mining disturbance. It is beneficial to master the fracture mechanism of rock mass in time to effectively prevent and control the ground pressure disasters.Microseismic signals are generated by the propagation and expansion of cracks inside the rock mass that contain plentiful information about the structural changes of rock mass. The ratio of the radiated energy of S and P waves(Es/Ep)of microseismic events can fast and eff ectively calculate the rock fracture mechanism, which is widely used for ground pressure hazard risk assessment. In this paper, this method was used to analyze the fracture mechanism of rock mass around deep stope in Hongtoushan copper mine and Ashele copper mine.Furthermore, the spatial distribution characteristics and proportion changes of microseismic events with diff erent fracture mechanisms along with the mining process were studied. The results show that tensile cracks play a dominant role, accounting for 62%of the total events, during non-shear fracturing of the rock mass caused by the stoping unloading eff ect, while shear cracks occupy 68%of the total events during orebody slip failure. When the physical and mechanical properties of the orebody and rock mass are signifi cantly diff erent, slip failure along their contact zone is prone to occur under blasting disturbance.During deep mining,it is necessary to control the exposed area of the roof by each stoping, especially during the earlier mining stage,to avoid tensile stress concentration. The temporal and spatial variation of tension cracks and shear cracks induced by roof damage obtained in this paper can guide the prevention and control of ground pressure disasters in deep mining eff ectively.Liu Jian-Po Si Ying-Tao Zhang Chang-Yin Wang Ren 2020Applied Geophysics2020,17,3:0
GPU-acceleration 3D rotated-staggered-grid solutions to microseismic anisotropic wave equation with moment tensor implementation显示文摘To improve the accuracy of microseismic inversion, seismic anisotropy and moment tensor source should be carefully considered in the forward modelling stage. In this study,3D microseismic anisotropy wave forward modelling with a moment tensor source was proposed. The modelling was carried out based on a rotated-staggered-grid(RSG)scheme.In contrast to staggered-grids,the RSG scheme defines the velocity components and densities at the same grid,as do the stress components and elastic parameters. Therefore, the elastic moduli do not need to be interpolated. In addition, the detailed formulation and implementation of moment-tensor source loaded on the RSG was presented by equating the source to the stress increments.Meanwhile, the RSG-based 3D wave equation forward modelling was performed in parallel using compute unified device architecture(CUDA)programming on a graphics processing unit(GPU)to improve its efficiency.Numerical simulations including homogeneous and anisotropic models were carried out using the method proposed in this paper, and compared with other methods to prove the reliability of this method.Furthermore, the high efficiency of the proposed approach was evaluated. The results show that the computational efficiency of proposed method can be improved by about two orders of magnitude compared with traditional central processing unit(CPU)computing methods. It could not only help the analysis of microseismic full wavefield records, but also provide support for passive source inversion, including location and focal mechanism inversion, and velocities inversion.Jing Zheng Lingbin Meng Yuan Sun Suping Peng 2023International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2023,33,4:0
Extraction and identifcation of spectrum characteristics of coal and rock hydraulic fracturing and uniaxial compression signals显示文摘Microseismic(MS)events generated during coal and rock hydraulic fracturing(HF)include wet events caused by fracturing fuid injection,in addition to dry events caused by stress perturbations. The mixture of these two events makes efective fracturing MS events pickup difcult. This study is based on physical experiments of diferent coal and rock HF and uniaxial compression. The diferences of waveform characteristic parameters of various coal and rock ruptures were analyzed using the Hilbert–Huang transform, leading to some useful conclusions. The phase characteristics of the acoustic emission(AE)energy difered signifcantly and responded well to the pumping pressure curve. The AE waveforms of HF exhibit similar energy and frequency distribution characteristics after Empirical mode decomposition. The main frequency bands for coal, sandstone, and shale samples are 100–300 kHz,while the mudstone sample is in the range of 50–150 kHz.The decay ratios for coal, sandstone, shale and mudstone samples are 0.78,0.83,0.67 and 0.85,respectively.When compared to the uniaxial compression test, the main frequency bands of HF were reduced for coal, sandstone and mudstone samples, whereas shale remained essentially unchanged. The duration, instantaneous energy, and total energy of the HF waveform are smaller than those of uniaxial compression, while the decay ratio is greater, especially for the mudstone samples. The waveform characteristic parameters, trained using the multilayer perceptron neural network, can efectively identify HF and uniaxial compression events with an accuracy of 96%.Ya′nan Qian Quangui Li Qianting Hu Zhizhong Jiang Ronghui Liu Jie Li Wenxi Li Changjun Yu 2023International Journal of Coal Science & Technology2023,10,4:0
