| 2 | Seasonal changes in the water-use strategies of three herbaceous species in a native desert steppe of Ningxia,China显示文摘Frequent periods of drought conditions are known to limit plant performance,primary production,and ecosystem stability in arid and semi-arid desert steppe environments.Plants often avoid competition by shifting their water use seasonally,which affects the water-use patterns of dominant species as well as the composition and structure of plant communities.However,the water-use strategies of dominant herbaceous species,which grow under natural field conditions in the desert steppe region of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region,China,are poorly known.Here,we explored the possible sources of water uptake and water-use efficiency(WUE)of three dominant herbaceous plant species(Stipa breviflora,Agropyron mongolicum,and Glycyrrhiza uralensis)in a native desert steppe in the semi-arid area of Ningxia through an analysis of multiple parameters,including(1)the stable isotopic oxygen and hydrogen(δ18O andδ2H)compositions of precipitation,soil water,and stem water,(2)the carbon isotope(13C)composition of leaves,and(3)the soil water contents,based on field sampling across varying water conditions from June to September,2017.Frequent small precipitation events replenished shallow soil water,whereas large events only percolated down to the deep soil layers.Changes in soil water availability affected the water-use patterns of plants.Generally,during light precipitation periods,the deep root system of G.uralensis accessed deeper(>80 cm)soil water,whereas S.breviflora and A.mongolicum,which only have shallow roots,primarily absorbed water from the shallow and middle soil layers.As precipitation increased,all three plant species primarily obtained water from the shallow soil layers.Variation in soil water uptake between the dry and wet seasons enabled plants to make better use of existing satoil water.In addition,theδ13C values of G.uralensis and S.breviflora were higher than those of A.mongolicum.Theδ13C values of the three plant species were significantly negatively correlated with soil water content.Therefore,G.uralensis and S.breviflora maintained a higher WUE through their conservative and water-saving strategies across the entire growing season.In contrast,A.mongolicum,with a relatively low WUE in the wet season but a high WUE in the dry season,exhibited a more flexible water-use strategy.The different water-use strategies of these dominant plant species demonstrated the mechanisms by which plant communities can respond to drought. | HU Haiying ZHU Lin LI Huixia XU Dongmei XIE Yingzhong | 2021 | Journal of Arid Land2021,13,2: | 4 |
| 3 | Reconstructing the annual precipitation variation since 1899 based on tree-ring width in the western Hedong sandy land of Ningxia显示文摘Based on the analysis of the correlation between the tree-ring width of Pinus tabulaeformis and the climate factors in the western Hedong sandy land of Ningxia, a conversion equation between the annual precipitation and the tree-ring width since 1899 was reconstructed. The results of cross verification indicated that the conversion equation is stable and the reconstructed results are reliable. The result of reconstructed annual precipitation showed the remarkable fluctuation of precipitation and dry-to-wet variation before the 1940s. The smaller fluctuation and high frequent changes of precipitation occurred during the period of 1940s-1980s and after the 1980s the change trend of the precipitation became high periodic extent and low frequent. The study found that there were some coincidences with the climate change in Changling Mountains, Helan Mountains and the east of Qilian Mountains. The relatively dry periods in the beginning of 20th century, 1920s to 1930s, the end of the 20th century and 2004 to 2006 in the western Hedong sandy land of Ningxia accelerated the desertification, while the relatively humid period during the periods of the 1910s-1920s, 1930s-1940s and 1990s is favorable to prevent and control the desertification, and to weaken the climate warming and drying. | 4 | Spatiotemporal dynamics of the vegetation in Ningxia,China using MODIS imagery显示文摘The vegetation in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region(henceforth,Ningxia)of north-western China plays an important role in guarding regional ecological safety and sustainable development.However,it is unclear how climate affects vegetation growth in terms of seasonality and various vegetation types in Ningxia.Based on remote sensing vegetation index from 2001 to 2016,climatic parameters,and the Chinese vegetation type data,this article examines the spatiotemporal effects of climate parameters on vegetation.The relative importance to variability in the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI)for different seasons and various vegetated types is also determined.The results demonstrate that the vegetation increased from 2001 to 2016 in Ningxia.The rate of NDVI increase was fastest in summer and slowest in spring.Areas with significant increases in vegetation occurred primarily in the southern mountain,Liupan Mountain,and central arid areas.Degraded vegetation occurred in the Yellow River irrigation area with intense human activity influence.The vegetation in most areas of Ningxia will continue to increase in the future.The sensitivity of vegetation to temperature,precipitation,sunshine duration,and wind velocity showed significantly seasonal variability.Sunshine duration and wind velocity were important climatic factors affecting vegetation growth in Ningxia.However,the impact of summer precipitation variation on summer NDVI(SMN)demonstrated a time lag effect.The impact of climate variation on vegetation was distinct among various vegetation types.Moreover,the spatial pattern of vegetation in Ningxia was also impacted by human activities. | Yi HE Haowen YAN Lei MA Lifeng ZHANG Lisha QIU Shuwen YANG | 2020 | Frontiers of Earth Science2020,14,1: | 3 |
| 5 | Comparisons of plant calcium fraction between two different vegetation zones in semi-arid region显示文摘To explore the characteristics of plant calcium(Ca) fraction, we analyzed 91 plant species in the Ningxia Habahu National Nature Reserve in Yanchi County of Ningxia and 84 plant species in Zhenglan Banner of Inner Mongolia. Results show that, for the two regions, there is no significant difference between Ca fraction for the same growth type, and between water soluble Ca content or between hydrochloric acid soluble Ca content for plants of the same ecosystem and between hydrochloric acid soluble Ca content for plants of the same family. In similar vegetation zones, there is a significant difference among hydrochloric acid soluble Ca content for different growth types in Yanchi County and Zhenglan Banner,which was the highest for annual herbs and the lowest for perennial herbs. There is a significant difference between acetic acid soluble Ca content and between hydrochloric acid soluble Ca content for sandy land and grassland ecosystems in Yanchi County. There is a significant difference among the same Ca fraction of different families in the same region. | 6 | 基于多尺度地理加权回归模型的宁夏温性草原产草量及其影响因素空间非平稳性特征显示文摘Spatial models are effective in obtaining local details on grassland biomass,and their accuracy has important practical significance for the stable management of grasses and livestock.To this end,the present study utilized measured quadrat data of grass yield across different regions in the main growing season of temperate grasslands in Ningxia of China(August 2020),combined with hydrometeorology,elevation,net primary productivity(NPP),and other auxiliary data over the same period.Accordingly,non-stationary characteristics of the spatial scale,and the effects of influencing factors on grass yield were analyzed using a mixed geographically weighted regression(MGWR)model.The results showed that the model was suitable for correlation analysis.The spatial scale of ratio resident-area index(PRI)was the largest,followed by the digital elevation model,NPP,distance from gully,distance from river,average July rainfall,and daily temperature range;whereas the spatial scales of night light,distance from roads,and relative humidity(RH)were the most limited.All influencing factors maintained positive and negative effects on grass yield,save for the strictly negative effect of RH.The regression results revealed a multiscale differential spatial response regularity of different influencing factors on grass yield.Regression parameters revealed that the results of Ordinary least squares(OLS)(Adjusted R^(2)=0.642)and geographically weighted regression(GWR)(Adjusted R^(2)=0.797)models were worse than those of MGWR(Adjusted R^(2)=0.889)models.Based on the results of the RMSE and radius index,the simulation effect also was MGWR>GWR>OLS models.Ultimately,the MGWR model held the strongest prediction performance(R^(2)=0.8306).Spatially,the grass yield was high in the south and west,and low in the north and east of the study area.The results of this study provide a new technical support for rapid and accurate estimation of grassland yield to dynamically adjust grazing decision in the semi-arid loess hilly region. | 宋小龙 米楠 米文宝 李陇堂 | 2022 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2022,32,6: | 2 |

| 8 | A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR UNSTEADY SEDIMENT TRANSPORT IN NINGXIA REACH OF THE YELLOW RIVER显示文摘A one-dimensional mathematical model for unsteady sediment transport in the Ningxia reach of the Yellow River was developed. In the model, the formulas for the sediment carrying capacity and the manning roughness coefficient, which reflect the features of the Yellow River, were adopted. A coefficient of sediment distribution was defined to represent the ratio of the bottom to the average concentration under the equilibrium conditions, which is not constant and is evaluated by using an empirical expression obtained by integrating the sediment concentration along water depth. The concentration distributions and the mean diameter distributions of suspended sediment in the transversal direction were also estimated in this model. A four-point (Preismann type) finite difference scheme and TDMA were employed in the numerical simulation. The amount of sediment deposition during the period of 1993~1999 in the Ningxia reach of the Yellow River from Xiaheyan to Shizuishan with a length of 197.43km were numerically simulated with the model. The computed results, such as the amount of sediment deposition and water stage agree well with the field data. In this study, a plan was developed for water management. A general strategy for planning and application of irrigation management was proposed. Since the Penman method was used, the focus was on a synthetic study involving basic project situations, relevant data, water requirement calculation, irrigation scheduling, and discussion on optimizing water use efficiency in the steppe and irrigated crop production ecosystems. Effective use of tabular displays made interpreting and analyzing results easier. Based on the statistical analysis between spring wheat water availability and water requirement, a new type of index called water niche suitability was proposed. The particular type of irrigation scheduling was based on this index together with concrete situation of irrigated areas. The research showed that there are great potentiality of water resources in optimizing Ningxia irrigation management. | 12 | Effects of micro-oxygenation on the aroma of Cabernet Sauvignon wine from Ningxia,China显示文摘Micro-oxygenation (MOX) is an effective post-harvest technique for the flavor improvement of grape wine. This study investigated the effect of MOX on the aroma quality of Ningxia wine for the first time. Three sub-region Cabernet Sauvignon dry red wines were treated with different levels of oxygen before or after malolactic fermentation. The wine aroma was analyzed through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) after six months of aging. The data obtained demonstrated that the dose and timing of oxygen addition were key factors influencing the effectiveness of MOX. The most noticeable modifications in wine aroma compounds were generated by an oxygen dosage of 30 (mL/L)/month added before malolactic fermentation. Predominantly, the concentrations of 2-phenylethanol, benzaldehyde, diacetyl, and 2,3-pentanedione showed an increased pattern upon MOX treatments. The sensory analysis revealed that MOX improved the aroma quality of wine by decreasing green and animal odors, meanwhile enhancing the olfactory intensities of dried fruits, flowers, and nuts.
