Harvest and Postharvest Factors Affecting Bruise Damage of Fresh Fruits显示文摘Fresh fruits are susceptible to bruising, a common type of mechanical damage during harvest and at all stages of postharvest handling. In quest of developing and adoption of strategies to reduce bruise damage, it is of utmost importance to understand major factors influencing bruise susceptibility of fresh produce at these stages. This review presents a critical discussion of factors affecting bruising during harvest and postharvest handling of fresh fruits. Excessive compression forces during harvesting by handpicking or machines, and a series of impacts during harvesting, transport and packhouse operations can cause severe bruise damage. The review has further revealed that bruising is dependent on a number of other factors such as produce maturity, ripening, harvest time(during the day or season) and time lapse after harvest. The susceptibility to bruising is partly dependent on how these factors alter the produce physiological and biochemical properties, and the environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity and several other postharvest treatments. Hence, the successful applications of harvesting techniques by use of trained personnel and proper harvesting equipment are essential to reduce both the incidence and severity of bruising.Furthermore, the careful selection of postharvest handling temperature and other treatments can increase resistance of fresh produce to bruise damage.Zaharan Hussein Olaniyi AFawole Umezuruike Linus Opara 2020Horticultural Plant Journal2020,6,1:11
Pre-harvest spraying of oxalic acid improves postharvest quality associated with increase in ascorbic acid and regulation of ethanol fermentation in kiwifruit cv. Bruno during storage显示文摘The kiwifruit trees(Actinidia deliciosa cv.Bruno)were sprayed with 5 mmol L-1 oxalic acid(OA)or water(as control)at 130,137 or 144 d after full-blossom,and then the fruit were harvested at commercial maturity and stored at room temperature(20±1)℃ for 13 d.The effect of pre-harvest spraying of OA on postharvest quality of kiwifruit was evaluated during storage. The OA spraying slowed the increase in soluble solids content(SSC)and decrease in titratable acid(TA),as well as increased contents of ascorbic acid(AsA)and total-AsA accompanied with higher AsA/DHA ratio in kiwifruit during storage. Moreover, the OA spraying significantly reduced the contents of acetaldehyde and ethanol in kiwifruit, along with significant decrease in activities of enzymes involved in ethanol fermentation metabolism during the later period of storage, which was beneficial to control off-flavor associated with over accumulation of ethanol during postharvest. It was suggested that pre-harvest spraying of OA might maintain the postharvest quality of kiwifruit in relation to delay in fruit ripening,AsA maintenance and regulation of ethanol fermentation.Maratab Ali LIU Meng-meng WANG Zhen-e LI Sheng-e JIANG Tian-jia ZHENG Xiao-lin 2019Journal of Integrative Agriculture2019,18,11:7
Comparison of different cooling methods for extending shelf life of postharvest broccoli显示文摘This study aimed to investigate and compare the effects of vacuum cooling, cooling water and cold room methods on the shelf life of broccoli. The experiments were divided into four groups:vacuum cooling(A),ice-water cooling(B),cold room cooling(C)and control. The cooling rate and changes of weight loss, respiratory rate, chlorophyll, vitamin C,reducing sugar content and sensory properties were measured at intervals of five days. The results indicated that vacuum cooling was the most effective method for extending the shelf life of postharvest broccoli in terms of cooling rate, respiration rate, chlorophyll, vitamin C,reducing sugar and sensory properties. Moreover, spraying the broccoli with water during the vacuum cooling process resulted in a significant reduction in weight compared with the other two cooling methods and did not reduce the quality of the broccoli.Consequently, vacuum cooling treatment can be applied to broccoli after harvest in the field to maintain quality during transportation and storage.Additionally, the application of water spraying during vacuum cooling can considerably reduce the negative influence caused by vacuum cooling.Ding Tian Liu Fen Ling Jiangang Kang Mengli Yu Jingfen Ye Xingqian Liu DongHong 2016International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2016,9,6:5
Effect of modified atmosphere packaging on the mechanical properties of lettuce during shelf life in cold storage显示文摘Lettuce is a perishable vegetable that its shelf life is limited by detrimental texture changes and enzymatic activities during postharvest storage. One of solutions that can be used in storage and distribution of this product is modified atmosphere packaging(MAP).But its effects on the mechanical properties of the product have not been studied. This information would be beneficial in inspection of eating quality and later processing such as cutting and shredding. This research aimed to study effect of active MAP technology on the postharvest mechanical properties of lettuce at different storage periods. It was found that MAP had a significant effect on the tension property of the lettuce leaf.MAP treatment preserved the brittleness of the specimens during storage, but the control ones lost their brittleness and tolerated greater tension.Stiffness and rupture energy were significantly affected by MAP with P values of 0.01 and 0.05,respectively.Also,stiffness of the MAPtreated samples was higher than the control at the same storage time. The findings are due to reducing respiration, transpiration and bacterial growth by MAP which delays nutrient decomposition and maintains the original color and texture.Mahmoud Soltani Firouz Reza Alimardani Hossein Mobli Seyed Saeid Mohtasebi 2021Information Processing in Agriculture2021,8,4:5
Effects of INA on postharvest blue and green molds and anthracnose decay in citrus fruit显示文摘As a synthetic functional analog of salicylic acid, 2,6-dichloroisonicotinic acid(INA) is effective in inducing the host disease resistance of a plant against a pathogen. The effects of INA on controlling postharvest blue and green molds and anthracnose decay and defense-related enzymes on citrus fruits were investigated, and the ascorbic acid of naturally infected citrus flavedo was also measured. Results showed that 1.0 mmol L^(–1) INA treatments significantly reduced blue and green molds and anthracnose decay development on both wound-inoculated fruit and naturally-infected fruit compared with the control fruit. The treatment effectively enhanced the β-1,3-glucanase(GLU), chitinase(CHI), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase(PAL) and peroxidase(POD) activities and the polyphenol oxidase(PPO) in flavedo. The results presented here suggest that INA might be used as a chemical fungicide substitution to control postharvest diseases in citrus fruits.JING Jia-yi ZHANG Hong-yan XUE Yao-bi ZENG Kai-fang 2020Journal of Integrative Agriculture2020,19,5:4
Separation of shelled walnut particles using pneumatic method显示文摘Separation of shelled walnut particles was studied on two varieties of Persian walnut,Poost-Kaghazi and Poost-Sangi using pneumatic method. The moisture contents of the samples were determined. The particles were considered in three categories of shell, kernel and shell-kernel together. Each category was manually classified based on their size,in three portions of 1/8,1/4,and 1/2,as well as the whole kernel and whole walnut. The terminal velocity of each group was determined. The shelled walnuts were sieved and classified in three groups of small, medium and large. The effects of separation time(5,10 and 15 seconds),feeding value(50 to 80 gr)and air velocity on separation of the kernels and shells were studied for both varieties. The interaction effects were also studied for three walnut sizes(small, medium and large). The terminal velocity was the highest for the whole walnut and the whole kernel while it was lowest for 1/4 and 1/8 of the shell. The best separation was performed at air velocities of 9.20,10.04 and 10.94 m/s with 98.2%,98.9%and 98.2%,respectively.A.Mokhtari Nahal A.Arabhosseini M.H.Kianmehr 2013International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2013,6,3:4

First report of a new potato disease caused by Galactomyces candidum F12 in China显示文摘Potato(Solanum tuberosum L.)is an important crop throughout the world. An uncharacterized disease has been observed on potato plants during the growing season and tubers during the storage period from Nileke County,Qitai County and other locations in Xinjiang,China.A particular fungus was consistently isolated from the infected potato plants and tubers.Based on its morphology, molecular characteristics, pathogenicity test and internal transcribed spacer(ITS)sequence, the pathogens was identified as Galactomyces candidum F12.Further study also showed that the hyphae and conidia of the pathogenic fungus grew faster as the temperature was 30℃,pH was 7,soluble starch was used as optimal carbon source and yeast powder as optimal nitrogen source. In addition,12-h continuous ilumination light was beneficial to the hyphal growth, while 24-h continuous ilumination was beneficial to the sporulation of the strain at 30℃.To our knowledge, this is the first report of Galactomyces candidum causing leaf wilt and postharvest tuber rot on potato in China.SONG Su-qin Lü Zhuo WANG Jing ZHU Jing GU Mei-ying TANG Qi-yong ZHANG Zhi-dong WANG Wei ZHANG Lijuan WANG Bo 2020Journal of Integrative Agriculture2020,19,10:1
QTL analysis reveals reduction of fruit water loss by NAC042 through regulation of cuticular wax synthesis in citrus fruit显示文摘Postharvest water loss is a critical factor that determines the quality and shelf life of fresh fruit.Cuticular wax constitutes a key barrier to reduce fruit water loss. Our previous study has shown that HJ(Citrus reticulata)has a significantly higher postharvest water loss rate than ZK(Poncirus trifoliata). Here,we investigated the fruit water loss rate of the HJ×ZK F1pseudo-testcross population in 2016 and 2019.QTL mapping for fruit water loss rate was performed by high-density genetic map and bulk segregant analysis, and QTL9 was identified to be associated with fruit water loss. The expression of NAC042 from QTL9 in ZK was 170-fold that in HJ.Heterologous expression in Arabidopsis showed that NAC042could reduce the water loss of leaves by increasing the cuticular wax content(especially alkanes).Further expression analysis revealed that NAC042 could enhance the expression of many wax-related genes in Arabidopsis leaves, including AtKCS1,AtKCS2,AtKCS9,AtKCS20,At CER1 and At CER3.Therefore,NAC042 might be involved in fruit cuticular wax synthesis to reduce fruit water loss. The findings provide new insights into the regulation of cuticular wax and fruit water loss as well as valuable information for breeding of citrus with better storability.Hongbin Yang Zhifeng Zhu Mingfei Zhang Xin Li Rangwei Xu Feng Zhu Juan Xu Xiuxin Deng Yunjiang Cheng 2022Horticultural Plant Journal2022,8,6:1
Interaction of genotype and environment effects on important traits of cassava(Manihot esculenta Crantz)显示文摘General and specific environmental adaptation of genotypes is the main goal of breeders. However, genotype-by-environment(G x E) interaction complicates the identification of genotypes for release. This study aimed at analyzing the effects of G x E interaction on the expression of important cassava traits using two multivariate analyses: additive main effects and multiplicative interaction(AMMI) and genotype stability index(GSI). Total carotene content(TCC), postharvest physiological deterioration(PPD), and reaction to viral diseases were significantly affected by G x E interaction effects. The low percent(%)variation due to genotype for cassava brown streak disease(GBSD) explained the influence of environment on CBSD expression. The % variation due to genotype for TCC was higher(96%) than variation due to environment(1.7%) and G x E interaction(2.4%) indicating a low interaction effect of environment on TCC accumulation. The % variation due to genotype was higher than % variation due to environment for all traits but CBSD root necrosis and CBSD on stems, indicating the influence of environment on the severity of the viral diseases. These findings indicate that screening for disease resistance requires multi-environment trials, whereas a single-environment trial suffices to screen for total carotene content.Athanase Nduwumuremyi Rob Melis Paul Shanahan Asiimwe Theodore 2017The Crop Journal2017,5,5:0
Postharvest quality and reactive oxygen species metabolism improvement of Coprinus comatus mushroom using allyl isothiocyanate fumigation显示文摘The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of allyl isothiocyanate(AITC)on the reactive oxygen species(ROS)metabolism and quality of postharvest Coprinus comatus(C.comatus).Fresh mushrooms were stored at 4℃with AITC at 5,10,and 20μL/L for 18 d,respectively.Sampling was performed every 3 d,and physicochemical parameters and ROS metabolism related enzymes activities were analyzed.Compared with the control, the application of AITC at 10μL/L significantly(P<0.05)decreased xanthine oxidase activity after 9 d of storage, while it significantly(P<0.05)improved the activities of succinic dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase in the middle and later stages of storage.Furthermore, the Ca^(2+)-ATPase and superoxide dismutase activities in sample treated by 10μL/L were all significantly(P<0.05)higher than those in the control. Therefore, the accumulation trends of malondialdehyde and ROS were retarded and membrane integrity was maintained.However,high-concentration AITC(20μL/L)treatment accelerated the ROS generation and increased electrolyte leakage rate. All AITC treatments significantly(P<0.05)inhibited the respiration rate during the first 9 d of storage and retarded browning of C.comatus during the storage of 18 d.These findings suggested that AITC treatment would be a promising method to maintain C.comatus quality, but the concentrations need to be optimized.郑恩萍 郑智汉 任诗雅 周化斌 杨海龙 2022Food Quality and Safety2022,6,4:0

Preservation Effect of Prochloraz-manganese Chloride Complex on ‘Gonggan’ (Citrus reticulata) Fruits显示文摘‘Gonggan’( Citrus reticulata) is a famous,high-quality and special citrus cultivar in the Xijiang River valley,Guangdong Province. However,it easily suffers from postharvest diseases, and thus is not tolerant to storage. Based on the preliminary test results,prochloraz-manganese chloride complex was selected as the disinfectant, and prepared into different concentrations for carrying out preservation test by dipping fruits. The fruit weight loss, soluble solids content and decay rate were analyzed, and the application security and sensory evaluation for fruit freshness and flavor were observed. The results showed that dipping fruits with prochloraz-manganese chloride complex solution had significant preservation effect on‘Gonggan’fruits in postharvest storage; the suitable concentration was 2. 0-3. 0 g/L,and the decay rates of fruits stored at room temperature for 30,60 and 90 d were below 5%,10% and 15%,respectively. Plate inoculation test further revealed that the pathogen of‘Gonggan’was sensitive to prochloraz-manganese chloride complex, and the concentration of 1. 0 g/L was enough to produce significant antimicrobial effect. Other technical links related to postharvest preservation of‘Gonggan’with prochloraz-manganese chloride complex were discussed.Xu Chengxiang Ma Yanping Liu Haobin 2017Plant Diseases and Pests2017,8,6:0
Nutritional quality and health benefits of microgreens,a crop of modern agriculture显示文摘Microgreens are young, tender greens that are used to enhance the color, texture,or flavor of salads and main dishes. They can be grown in small scales and indoors, making them widely adopted by controlled environment agriculture,an indoor farming practice is particularly important for feeding increasing urban populations.Besides, microgreens are attracting more consumers’attention due to their high nutritional value and unique sensory characteristics. This review focuses on the nutrition quality, sensory evaluation,pre-and post-harvest interventions, and health benefits of microgreens.Microgreens are rich in vitamins(e.g.,VC),minerals(e.g.,copper and zinc),and phytochemicals, including carotenoids and phenolic compounds, which act as antioxidants in human body.Pre-harvest interventions, such as illumination, salinity stress, nutrient fortification, and natural substrates, infl uence the photosynthetic and metabolic activities of microgreens and were shown to improve their nutritional quality, while the effects varied among species. After harvesting, packaging method and storage temperature can infl uence the nutrient retention in microgreens. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that microgreens have anti-infl ammatory,anti-cancer,anti-bacterial,and anti-hyperglycemia properties, making it a new functional food beneficial to human health. The sensory attributes and overall acceptability and liking of microgreens are primarily infl uenced by their phytochemical content.Microgreens are only getting popular during the last decades and research on microgreens is still at its early stage.More studies are warranted to optimize the pre-and post-harvest practices for nutrient enhancement and retention and to explore the potential health benefits of different microgreens for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.Yanqi Zhang Zhenlei Xiao Emily Ager Lingyan Kong Libo Tan 2021Journal of Future Foods2021,1,1:0
Use of Plant Extracts in the Control of Post-Harvest Fungal Rots in Apples显示文摘Different fungi alter apples in the post-harvest period, causing considerableeconomic losses and risks to consumer health due to the mycotoxinsthat some of these fungi produce. The control of these fungal alterationsin apples is mainly dependent on the use of chemical fungicides, the effectivenessof which has been well proven. However, this use is subject torestrictions due to growing concerns about risks to human health and theenvironment and the continued development of pathogen resistance to commonlyused fungicides. A new approach to control post-harvest fungi hasbeen implemented through the application of plant extract. It is estimatedthat there are more than 250,000 higher plant species on Earth that can beevaluated for their antimicrobial bioactive chemical compounds. In recentdecades, researchers have evaluated plant extracts and essential oils againstfungi responsible for post-harvest apple rot. Interesting results have beenobtained. The purpose of this project is to summarize and discuss the resultsof in vitro and in situ experiments of different literatures concerning the effectsof compounds derived from plants on the control of fungi responsiblefor rotting apples in storage.EL Alami Nabila EL ATTARI Soufiyan 2019Journal of Botanical Research2019,1,3:0
The Potential Efficacy of Glycyrrhizic Acid and Its Nanostructure Against Brown Rot of Peach fruits显示文摘Production of peaches(Prunus persica(L.)Batsch)for both local market and export is increasing each year in Egypt.Brown rot disease, caused by Monilinia laxa and Monilinia fructigena,is considered one of the most important postharvest rots affecting peaches in Egypt and economic losses are increasing.Antifungal activity of glycyrrhizic acid nanoparticles(GA-NPs)and glycyrrhizic acid(GA)at 0.2 and 0.4 mmol/L was investigated as a control for both these brown rot pathogens on peach fruits in both in vitro and in vivo studies. In the in vitro studies,GA-NPs were the most effective as shown by the ability to decrease linear growth of both brown rot pathogens in potato dextrose agar(PDA)amended with 0.4 mmol/L GA-NPs.Micrographs of M.fructigena exposed to 0.4 mmol/LGA showed mycelial deformations, nodule formation, detachment of the cell wall, shrinkage and inhomogeneous cytoplasmic materials with large vacuoles.Mycelium of M.laxa exposed to 0.4 mmol/LGA-NPs resulted in thinner and distorted hyphae, nodule formation, cell wall thinning, and swellings. The GANPs and GA treatments improved fruit quality by maintaining firmness and total soluble solids(TSS).GA-NPs were more effective in decreasing decay incidence than their bulk material. The 0.4 mmol/L GA-NPs completely inhibited the disease on naturally infected peach fruits for both seasons of 2018 and 2019.Furthermore,0.4 mmol/L GA-NPs reduced the disease incidence in inoculated fruits by 95(M.laxa)and 88%(M.fructigena)in 2018 season and 96(M.laxa)and 85%(M.fructigena)in 2019 season. In conclusion,GA-NPs could enhance the resistance of peaches against brown rot caused by M.laxa and M.fructigena.Tahsin Shoala Basma H.Amin Ismail A.S.Rashid Fayz A.Abdel-Rahman Mohamed E.Khalil Khamis Youssef 2023Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,4:0
Isolation, identification and artificial inoculation of Rhizoctonia solani on pear during storage显示文摘Pear is a fruit crop of worldwide importance and cold storage is an integral part of the production and distribution of pears. An uncharacterized fungal disease has been observed on‘Huangguan’pear fruit during cold storage in Hebei Province. The fungus was consistently isolated from diseased fruit by routine tissue separation method, and shown to be the causal agent according to Koch postulates.Based on its morphology, molecular characteristics, pathogenicity and ITS sequence, the fungus was identified as Rhizoctonia solani. This study recorded postharvest fruit rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani on pear fruit in China.Xiaohui Jia Jianing Xu Yushuo Wu Xinnan Zhang Yanmin Du Wenhui Wang 2023Horticultural Plant Journal2023,9,1:0
Maize and the maize weevil:advances and innovations in postharvest control of the pest显示文摘The review focused on recent advances and innovations on the use of maize varietal resistance and plant materials in the control of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky.New biological techniques for assessing the resistance of varieties of maize to postharvest infestation by S.zeamias were highlighted. It was suggested that routine analysis of plant species is particularly important to cope with the problem of resistance to synthetic insecticides in weevil control. So the paper also revealed the important technical guidelines and scoring system for testing plant materials for insecticidal activity.Effective postharvest insect pest management strategy should form part of the overall crop husbandry for preserving the quality of the produce.Use of resistant varieties is the best approach to overcoming the problems of synthetic insecticides in weevil control. However, breeding maize crop to improve resistance against the maize weevil is associated with some technical limitations. These limitations include lack of inter-specific cross-compatibility,methodological constraints, biotic variation, undesirable genetic linkages, and limited knowledge of genetic bases of resistance.During screening of plant species for insecticidal activities,an untreated control and a reference insecticide whose efficacy in different agro-ecological zones is known should be designated and the plant material should be tested at economically justified doses. The review presented some advances and innovations on the use of maize resistance(including new formulae and scoring systems)in the control of weevil infestation and addressed maize quality and safety after pest-control process.Findings will enhance reorientation of research focus and provide new impetus for the protection of stored maize against S.zeamais attack.Luke Chinaru Nwosu 2018Food Quality and Safety2018,2,3:0
