Survival outcome of patients with spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma treated surgically or by transarterial embolization显示文摘AIM: To evaluate clinical outcomes of patients that underwent surgery, transarterial embolization (TAE), or supportive care for spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: A consecutive 54 patients who diagnosed as spontaneously ruptured HCC at our institution between 2003 and 2012 were retrospectively enrolled. HCC was diagnosed based on the diagnostic guidelines issued by the 2005 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. HCC rupture was defined as disruption of the peritumoral liver capsule with enhanced fluid collection in the perihepatic area adjacent to the HCC by dynamic liver computed tomography, and when abdominal paracentesis showed an ascitic red blood cell count of > 50000 mm 3 /mL in bloody fluid. RESULTS: Of the 54 patients, 6 (11.1%) underwent surgery, 25 (46.3%) TAE, and 23 (42.6%) supportive care. The 2-, 4and 6-mo cumulative survival rates at 2, 4 and 6 mo were significantly higher in the surgery (60%, 60% and 60%) or TAE (36%, 20% and 20%) groups than in the supportive care group (8.7%, 0% and 0%), respectively (each, P < 0.01), and tended to be higher in the surgical group than in the TAE group. Multivariate analysis showed that serum bilirubin (HR = 1.09, P < 0.01), creatinine (HR = 1.46, P = 0.04), and vasopressor requirement (HR = 2.37, P = 0.02) were significantly associated with post-treatment mortality, whereas surgery (HR = 0.41, P < 0.01), and TAE (HR = 0.13, P = 0.01) were inversely associated with posttreatment mortality. CONCLUSION: Post-treatment survival after surgery or TAE was found to be better than after supportive care, and surgery tended to provide better survival benefit than TAE. | Young-Joo Jin Jin-Woo Lee Seoung-Wook Park Jung Il Lee Don Haeng Lee Young Soo Kim Soon Gu Cho Yong Sun Jeon Kun Young Lee Seung-Ik Ahn | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,28: | 23

Pretreated quercetin protects gerbil hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons from transient cerebral ischemic injury by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes显示文摘Quercetin(QE; 3,5,7,3′,4′-pentahydroxyflavone), a well-known flavonoid, has been shown to prevent against neurodegenerative disorders and ischemic insults. However, few studies are reported regarding the neuroprotective mechanisms of QE after ischemic insults. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of QE on ischemic injury and the expression of antioxidant enzymes in the hippocampal CA1 region of gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient cerebral ischemia. QE was pre-treated once daily for 15 days before ischemia. Pretreatment with QE protected hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons from ischemic injury, which was confirmed by neuronal nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining. In addition, pretreatment with QE significantly increased the expression levels of endogenous antioxidant enzymes Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase, Mn superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons of animals with ischemic injury. These findings demonstrate that pretreated QE displayed strong neuroprotective effects against transient cerebral ischemia by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes. | Bai Hui Chen Joon Ha Park Ji Hyeon Ahn Jeong Hwi Cho In Hye Kim Jae Chul Lee Moo-Ho Won Choong-Hyun Lee In Koo Hwang Jong-Dai Kim Il Jun Kang Jun Hwi Cho Bich Na Shin Yang Hee Kim Yun Lyul Lee Seung Min Park | 2017 | Neural Regeneration Research2017,12,2: | 9
Retrospective analysis of extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors显示文摘AIM:To investigate the clinicopathologic features of patients with extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors(EGISTs)in South Korea.METHODS:A total of 51 patients with an EGIST were identified. The clinicopathologic features, including sex, age, location, tumor size, histology, mitotic rate, immunohistochemical features, genetic status and survival data, were analyzed.RESULTS:The median age was 55 years(range:29-80years),and male:female ratio was 1:1.04.The most common site was in the mesentery(n=15)followed by the retroperitoneum(n=13)and omentum(n=8).The median tumor size was 9.0 cm(range:2.6-30.0cm)and the median mitotic rate was 5.0/50HPF.(1/50-185/50).KIT was analyzed in 16,which revealed 10cases with wild-type KIT and 6 cases with an exon 11mutation.Among 51 patients,31 patients had undergone surgery, and 10 had unresectable disease and had taken palliative imatinib, which resulted in 22.7 mo of progression-free survival.Of the patients who had undergone surgery,18 did not take adjuvant imatinib, and 8 of these were categorized as'high risk'according to the risk criteria. However, the relapse-free survival was not different(P=0.157)between two groups.CONCLUSION:Because the biologic behaviors of GISTs differ according to the location of the tumor,a more stratified strategy is required for managing EGISTs including incorporation of molecular features. | Jun Ho Yi Byeong-Bae Park Jung Hun Kang In Gyu Hwang Dong Bok Shin Sun Jin Sym Hee Kyung Ahn Soon Il Lee Do Hyoung Lim Keon Woo Park Young-Woong Won Sung Hee Lim Se Hoon Park | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,6: | 9
Pretreated Oenan the Javanica extract increases anti-inflammatory cytokines, attenuates gliosis, and protects hippocampal neurons following transient global cerebral ischemia in gerbils显示文摘Recently,we have reported that Oenanthe javanica extract(OJE)displays strong neuroprotective effect against ischemic damage after transient global cerebral ischemia. However, neuroprotective mechanisms of OJE have not been fully identified. Thus, this study investigated the neuroprotection of OJE in the hippocampal CA1 area and its anti-inflammatory activity in gerbils subjected to 5 minutes of transient global cerebral ischemia. We treated the animals by intragastrical injection of OJE(100 and 200 mg/kg)once daily for 1 week prior to transient global cerebral ischemia.Neuroprotection of OJE was observed by immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclear antigen and histofluorescence staining for Fluoro-Jade B.Immunohistochemistry of glial fibrillary acidic protein and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 was done for astrocytosis and microgliosis, respectively. To investigate the neuroprotective mechanisms of OJE,we performed immunohistochemistry of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-2 for pro-inflammatory function and interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 for anti-inflammatory function. When we treated the animals by intragastrical administration of 200 mg/kg of OJE,hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons were protected from transient global cerebral ischemia and cerebral ischemia-induced gliosis was inhibited in the ischemic hippocampal CA1 area.We also found that interleukin-4 and-13 immunoreactivities were significantly increased in pyramidal neurons of the ischemic CA1 area after OJE pretreatment, and the increased immunoreactivities were sustained in the CA1 pyramidal neurons after transient global cerebral ischemia. However,OJE pretreatment did not increase interleukin-2 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha immunoreactivities in the CA1 pyramidal neurons. Our findings suggest that pretreatment with OJE can protect neurons and attenuate gliosis from transient global cerebral ischemia via increasing expressions of interleukin-4 and-13.The experimental plan of this study was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC)in Kangwon National University(approval No.KW-160802-1)on August 10,2016. | Joon Ha Park In Hye Kim Ji Hyeon Ahn YooHun Noh Sung-Su Kim Tae-Kyeong Lee Jae-Chul Lee Bich-Na Shin Tae Heung Sim Hyun Sam Lee Jeong Hwi Cho In Koo Hwang Il Jun Kang Jong Dai Kim Moo-Ho Won | 2019 | Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,9: | 6
Neuroprotection of Chrysanthemum indicum Linne against cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury by anti-inflammatory effect in gerbils显示文摘In this study, we tried to verify the neuroprotective effect of Chrysanthemum indicum Linne(CIL) extract, which has been used as a botanical drug in East Asia, against ischemic damage and to explore the underlying mechanism involving the anti-inflammatory approach. A gerbil was given CIL extract for 7 consecutive days followed by bilateral carotid artery occlusion to make a cerebral ischemia/reperfusion model. Then, we found that CIL extracts protected pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region(CA1) from ischemic damage using neuronal nucleus immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence. Accordingly, interleukin-13 immunoreactivities in the CA1 pyramidal neurons of CIL-pretreated animals were maintained or increased after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. These findings indicate that the pre-treatment of CIL can attenuate neuronal damage/death in the brain after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion via an anti-inflammatory approach. | Ki-YeonYoo In Hye Kim Jeong-Hwi Cho li Hyeon Ahn Joon Ha Park Jae-Chul Lee Hyun-Jin Tae Dae Won Kim Jong-Dai Kim Seongkweon Hong Moo-Ho Won il Jun Kang | 2016 | Neural Regeneration Research2016,11,2: | 4
Adrenal lymphangioma masquerading as a pancreatic tail cyst显示文摘Cystic lymphangiomas of the adrenal gland are rare. A 79-year-old female presented in the emergency room with epigastric discomfort, and an immovable mass was palpated in her abdomen upon physical examination. Imaging studies revealed a large cystic lesion in the pancreatic tail. The radiologic impression ruled out the possibility of a mucinous cystic neoplasm, or a pseudocyst in the pancreas. The operative findings demonstrated that the cystic mass originated in the left adrenal gland. A laparoscopic excision of the cystic mass was performed, and immunohistochemistry confirmed that this mass was a lymphangioma of the adrenal gland. Several prior reports have suggested that lymphangioma can mimic renal or splenic cysts. However, lymphangioma cases mimicking pancreatic cysts are very rare. | Hae Il Jung Taesung Ahn Myoung Won Son Zisun Kim Sang Ho Bae Moon Soo Lee Chang Ho Kim Hyon Doek Cho | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,36: | 2

Effect of hyperthermia on calbindin-D 28k immunoreactivity in the hippocampal formation following transient global cerebral ischemia in gerbils显示文摘Calbindin D-28K(CB), a Ca2+-binding protein, maintains Ca2+ homeostasis and protects neurons against various insults. Hyperthermia can exacerbate brain damage produced by ischemic insults. However, little is reported about the role of CB in the brain under hyperthermic condition during ischemic insults. We investigated the effects of transient global cerebral ischemia on CB immunoreactivity as well as neuronal damage in the hippocampal formation under hyperthermic condition using immunohistochemistry for neuronal nuclei(Neu N) and CB, and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescence staining in gerbils. Hyperthermia(39.5 ± 0.2°C) was induced for 30 minutes before and during transient ischemia. Hyperthermic ischemia resulted in neuronal damage/death in the pyramidal layer of CA1–3 area and in the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In addition, hyperthermic ischemia significantly decreaced CB immunoreactivity in damaged or dying neurons at 1, 2, 5 days after ischemia. In brief, hyperthermic condition produced more extensive and severer neuronal damage/death, and reduced CB immunoreactivity in the hippocampus following transient global cerebral ischemia. Present findings indicate that the degree of reduced CB immunoreactivity might be related with various neuronal damage/death overtime and corresponding areas after ischemic insults. | Jae-Chul Lee Jeong-Hwi Cho Tae-Kyeong Lee In Hye Kim Moo-Ho Won Geum-Sil Cho Bich-Na Shin In Koo Hwang Joon Ha Park Ji Hyeon Ahn Il Jun Kang Young Joo Lee Yang Hee Kim | 2017 | Neural Regeneration Research2017,12,9: | 2

Nomogram for prediction of pathologic complete remission using biomarker expression and endoscopic finding after preoperative chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer显示文摘Objective:The aim of this study is to develop a nomogram for prediction of pathologic complete remission(p CR)after preoperative chemoradiotherapy(CRT)for rectal cancer. Methods:m RNA expression levels of seven molecular markers[p53,p21,Ki-67,vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),CD133,CD24,CD44]were measured by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction(RTPCR)in 120 rectal cancers.Endoscopic findings of clinical complete remission(c CR)and biologic variables were used to construct nomogram in the training group(n=80),which was validated in the validation group(n=40).Results:m RNA expression levels of four markers(p53,p21,Ki67,CD133)correlated with p CR(24/80,30.0%)in the training group.Low expression of p53 and/or high expression of p21,Ki67 and CD133 showed greater p CR rate.p CR was shown in 18(69.2%)of 26 cases showing endoscopic c CR in the training group.Higher p CR rate was demonstrated in lower tumor location than middle tumor(19/49,38.8%vs.5/31,16.1%).A nomogram for prediction of p CR was developed from the multivariate prediction model using these six variables, which showed good discrimination ability in the training group[area under the curve(AUC)=0.945]and validation group(AUC=0.922).The calibration plot showed good agreement between actual and predicted p CR in both patient groups. Conclusions:Nomogram for assessment of p CR can be useful for making treatment decisions after CRT according to predicted responses. | Hyuk Hur Min Soo Cho Woong Sub Koom Joon Seok Lim Tae Il Kim Joong Bae Ahn Hoguen Kim Nam Kyu Kim | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2020,32,2: | 2
