1Efficacy of thymosin alpha-1 and interferon alpha in treatment of chronic viral hepatitis B:A randomized controlled study显示文摘AIM: To observe the efficiency and safety of thymosin-α1 treatment in patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and HBV DNA positive chronic hepatitis. METHODS: Sixty-two patients were randomly divided into groups A and B. The patients in group A received subcutaneous injection of 1.6 mg thymosin-α1, twice a week (T-α1 group) for six months, and the patients in group B received 5 MU interferon alpha (IFN-α) each day for fifteen days, then three times weekly (IFN-α group) for six months. The results between two groups treated with and the group untreated with IFN-α which was followed up for 12 mo (historical control group consisting of 30 patients) were compared, and three groups were comparable between each other (P > 0.05) at baseline (age, sex, clinical history, biochemical, and serological parameters). RESULTS: At the end of treatment, complete response, which was defined as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization and HBV DNA and HBeAg loss, occurred in 9 of 29 (31.0%) patients in the T-α1 group and in 15 of 33 (45.5%) patients in the IFN-α group (c2 = 1.36, P >0.05). After a follow-up period of six months, a complete response was observed in 14 of 29 (48.3%) patients in the T-α1 group and in 9 of 33 (27.3%) patients in the IFN-α group (c2 = 2.93, P > 0.05). Compared with the results observed in the historical control (HC) group untreated with IFN-α which was followed up for 12 mo, the rate of complete response was significantly higher in IFN-α group at the end of therapy (1 of 30 vs 15 of 33, c2 = 14.72, P < 0.001) and in the T-α1 group at the end of follow-up (1 of 30 vs 14 of 29, c2 = 15.71, P < 0.001). In T-α1 and IFN-α treatment groups, the area under (the plasma concentration time) curve (AUC) of negative HBV DNA and HBeAg was 34%, 17%, 31% and 19% smaller than that in the HC group. By the end of the follow- up period, the proportions of ALT normalization and negative HBV DNA in the T-α1 group were significantly higher than those in the IFN-α and HC groups. The odds of ALT normalization and negative HBV DNA at the end of the follow-up was three-fold higher in the T-α1 group than in the IFN-α group. Unlike IFN-α, T-α1 was well tolerated by all patients, and no side effects appeared in T-α1 group.CONCLUSION: The results suggest that a 6-mo course of T-α1 therapy is effective and safe in patients with chronic hepatitis B. T-α1 is able to reduce HBV replication in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Furthermore, T-α1 is better tolerated than IFN-α and can gradually induce more sustained ALT normalization and HBV DNA and HBeAg loss. However, a response rate of 48.3% is still less ideal. 2A deep learning-integrated micro-CT image analysis pipeline for quantifying rice lodging resistance-related traits显示文摘Lodging is a common problemin rice,reducing its yield andmechanical harvesting efficiency.Rice architecture is a key aspect of its domestication and a major factor that limits its high productivity.The ideal rice culm structure,includingmajor_axis_culm,minor axis_culm,andwall thickness_culm,is critical for improving lodging resistance.However,the traditionalmethod ofmeasuring rice culms is destructive,time consuming,and labor intensive.In this study,we used a high-throughput micro-CT-RGB imaging system and deep learning(SegNet)todevelopa high-throughputmicro-CTimageanalysis pipelinethatcanextract 24 riceculmmorphological traits and lodging resistance-related traits.When manual and automatic measurements were compared at themature stage,the mean absolute percentage errors for major_axis_culm,minor_axis_culm,andwall_thickness_culmin 104 indica rice accessionswere 6.03%,5.60%,and 9.85%,respectively,and the R^(2) valueswere 0.799,0.818,and 0.623.We also builtmodels of bending stress using culmtraits at the mature and tillering stages,and the R^(2) values were 0.722 and 0.544,respectively.The modeling results indicated that this method can quantify lodging resistance nondestructively,even at an early growth stage.In addition,we also evaluated the relationships of bending stress toshoot dryweight,culm density,and drought-related traits and found that plants with greater resistance to bending stress had slightly higher biomass,culm density,and culm area but poorer drought resistance.In conclusion,we developed a deep learning-integrated micro-CT image analysis pipeline to accurately quantify the phenotypic traits of rice culms in4.6 min per plant;this pipeline will assist in future high-throughput screening of large rice populations for lodging resistance.Di Wu Dan Wu Hui Feng Lingfeng Duan Guoxing Dai Xiao Liu Kang Wang Peng Yang Guoxing Chen Alan P.Gay John H.Doonan Zhiyou Niu Lizhong Xiong Wanneng Yang 2021Plant Communications2021,2,2:7

6Clinical significance of hepatic derangement in severe acute respiratory syndrome显示文摘AIM: Elevation of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is commonly seen among patients suffering from severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). We report the progression and clinical significance of liver derangement in a large cohort of SARS patient.METHODS: Serial assay of serum ALT was followed in patients who fulfilled the WHO criteria of SARS. Those with elevated ALT were compared with those with normal liver functions for clinical outcome. Serology for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was checked. Adverse outcomes were defined as oxygen desaturation, need of intensive care unit (ICU) and mechanical ventilation and death.RESULTS: Two hundred and ninety-four patients were included in this study. Seventy (24%) patients had elevated serum ALT on admission and 204 (69%) patients had elevated ALT during the subsequent course of illness. Using peak ALT >5×ULN as a cut-off and after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the odds ratio of peak ALT>5x ULN for oxygen desaturation was 3.24 (95%CI 1.23-8.59, P = 0.018), ICU care was 3.70 (95% CI 1.38-9.89, P = 0.009), mechanical ventilation was 6.64 (95%CI 2.22-19.81, P = 0.001) and death was 7.34(95%CI 2.28-24.89, P = 0.001). Ninety-three percent of the survived patients had ALT levels normalized or were on the improving trend during follow-up. Chronic hepatitis B was not associated with worse clinical outcomes.CONCLUSION: Reactive hepatitis is a common complication of SARS-coronavirus infection. 7Hypertrophic adenoids in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma:appearance at magnetic resonance imaging before and after treatment显示文摘Introduction:Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) sporadically develop abnormal adenoids.Nasopharyngeal adenoids are usually included in the gross tumor volume(GTV) but may have different therapeutic responses than tumor tissue.Therefore,distinguishing adenoids from tumor tissue may be required for precise and efficient chemoradiotherapy and radiotherapy.We characterized nasopharyngeal adenoids and investigated the therapeutic responses of NPC and nasopharyngeal adenoids using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Methods:MRI data from 40 NPC patients with a coexisting adenoid mass before and after treatment were analyzed.The features of the adenoid masses,including location,striped appearance,size,interface,symmetry/asymmetry,and cysts,were evaluated.Treatment response were scored according to the World Health Organization guidelines.Results:A striped appearance was observed in 36 cases before treatment and in all cases after treatment.In these 36 cases,the average GTVs including and excluding the uninvolved adenoids were 19.8 cm^3 and 14.8 cm^3,respectively.The average percentage change after excluding the uninvolved adenoids from the GTV was 31.0%.Stable disease in the adenoids was identified in 27(96.4%) of 28 patients after neoadjuvant chemotherapy,while NPC clearly regressed.Partial adenoid responses were identified in 33(82.5%) of 40 patients at 3 months after chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy,whereas complete tumor responses were achieved in all patients.Six months after treatment,the adenoids continued to atrophy but did not disappear,and tumor recurrence was not found.Conclusions:Nasopharyngeal adenoids and carcinoma tissue in NPC patients can be distinguished by using MRI and have different responses to chemoradiotherapy and radiotherapy.These findings contribute to better delineating the GTV of NPC,based on which spatially optimized strategies can be developed to render precise and efficient chemoradiotherapy and radiotherapy.Additionally,we observed a clear difference in the responses of these two tissue types to current therapies.This finding may reduce or avoid unnecessary biopsies or overtreatment.Yao-Pan Wu Pei-Qiang Cai Li Tian Jie-Hua Xu Richard Alan Mitteer Jr Yi Fan Zhenfeng Zhang 2015Chinese Journal of Cancer2015,34,3:4

9Microstructure-based multiphysics modeling for semiconductor integration and packaging显示文摘Semiconductor technology and packaging is advancing rapidly toward system integration where the packaging is co-designed and co-manufactured along with the wafer fabrication.However,materials issues,in particular the mesoscale microstructure,have to date been excluded from the integrated product design cycle of electronic packaging due to the myriad of materials used and the complex nature of the material phenomena that require a multiphysics approach to describe.In the context of the materials genome initiative,we present an overview of a series of studies that aim to establish the linkages between the material microstructure and its responses by considering the multiple perspectives of the various multiphysics fields.The microstructure was predicted using thermodynamic calculations,sharp interface kinetic models,phase field,and phase field crystal modelingtechniques.Based on the predicted mesoscale microstructure,linear elastic mechanical analyses and electromigration simulations on the ultrafine interconnects were performed.The microstructural index extracted by a method based on singular value decomposition exhibits a monotonous decrease with an increase in the interconnect size.An artificial neural network-based fitting revealed a nonlinear relationship between the microstructure index and the average von Mises stress in the ultrafine interconnects.Future work to address the randomness of microstructure and the resulting scatter in the reliability is discussed in this study.Zhiheng Huang Hua Xiong Zhiyong Wu Paul Conway Hugh Davies Alan Dinsdale Yunfei En Qingfeng Zeng 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,15:2
10State of art control of dioxins/unintentional POPs in the secondary copper industry: A review to assist policy making with the implementation of the Stockholm Convention显示文摘Article 5 of the Stockholm Convention requires that each Party shall take measures to reduce the releases from anthropogenic sources of unintentional persistent organic pollutants(UPOPs),with the goal of their continuing minimization and,where feasible,their ultimate elimination.A major source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs)and other unintentional POPs releases,both in China and worldwide,is the metal industry in particular secondary metal industries such as copper smelting.More than 50%of the global secondary copper production is now in China and high levels of PCDD/Fs are released from these operations with the national inventory of China reporting a total of 1133.8 g toxic equivalents(TEQ)yr1.Consequently the Global Environment Facility(GEF)is supporting the project‘UPOPs Reduction through best available techniques and best environmental practices(BAT/BEP)in the secondary copper production sector’in China compromising>50%of the global secondary copper production.As part of this project,information on relevant UPOPs from the metal industry have been reviewed and is presented here.This information should also be useful for other(developing)countries for controlling UPOPs releases from metal industries.This review and the information it contains provides a robust resource for policy makers,the industry and researchers to improve secondary copper production to BAT/BEP standards in relation to the reduction of PCDD/Fs and other UPOPs release.The contents include the details required to assist the understanding of the formation of chlorinated UPOPs along with their brominated and brominated-chlorinated analogues.It reviews the international sources of information on BAT/BEP,including the integrated approach considered in the European BAT Reference document,and shows how this can be used to achieve an overall reduction of pollutant releases from the industry.The current national standards of PCDD/F limits to air,water and solid residues have been compiled and are also included.Challenges which need to be addressed,such as the current international lack to consider brominated and mixed bromo-chloro PXDD/Fs which might be more environmentally significant than PCDD/Fs in some facilities e are also discussed.The study includes a brief description of the steps China has taken to change the national regulatory framework and to improve the sustainability of its secondary metal industry.The Stockholm Convention BAT/BEP guidelines recommend consideration of integrated pollution prevention and control and sustainable production as general principles which parties may incorporate when applying the BAT/BEP guidelines and guidance.This holistic approach is considered in the current project and in the improvement of the pilot facilities and will also be considered in the replication of experiences in other facilities.Using this approach ensures the implementation of the Stockholm Convention can contribute to integrated pollution prevention and control,the development of a circular economy and consequently to genuinely sustainable development thus contributing to different sustainable development goals(SDGs).It is hoped this approach will be adopted in other developing and transition economies and thus help to achieve improvements of the secondary metal industry globally.Guanglong Wu Roland Weber Yong Ren Zheng Peng Alan Watson Jiahong Xie 2020Emerging Contaminants2020,6,1:2
