| 1 | Ocular manifestation and their associated factors among HIV/AIDS patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy in Southern Ethiopia显示文摘AIM:To assess the pattern of ocular manifestation and associated factors among human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS) patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART) at Hawassa University Referral Hospital, Southern Ethiopia. METHODS:A cross sectional study was conducted from January 2014 to April 2015. After obtaining informed written consent, 240 adult HIV/AIDS patients on HAART were randomly selected regardless of their ophthalmic symptoms, WHO status or CD4 count. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and ophthalmologic clinical examination. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. RESULTS:The mean duration of HAART was 62.5mo. The prevalence of HIV related ocular manifestation was 14.2%. Seborrheic blepharitis(5%) was the most common ocular manifestation, followed by squamoid conjunctival growth(3.8%). The rate of ocular manifestation was significantly higher among study participants who had CD4+ count <200 cells/μL(AOR=3.83; 95%CI:1.315-11.153), low duration of HAART(AOR=3.0; 95%CI:1.305-6.891) and who had primary school education [odds ratio(OR) =2.8; 95%CI:1.105-7.099]. Prevalence of visual impairment and blindness was 10.9% and 5.8%, respectively.CONCLUSION:HAART may be the reason for the decline in the prevalence of ocular manifestation in HIV/AIDS patients in the study area. | 6 | Aboveground carbon stock is related to land cover and woody species diversity in tropical ecosystems of Eastern Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Current theories on biodiversity-carbon sequestration relationship describe biodiversity as an important factor influencing carbon storage,either through complementarity effect or by mass ratio effect.So far,the expected form of biodiversity-carbon relationships in tropical ecosystems has not been known with certainty.Therefore,we explored the relationship between aboveground carbon stock and different biodiversity measurement indices(i.e.,species richness,species diversity,species evenness,and functional diversity)in different land cover types of Eastern Ethiopia.A total of 48 plots were established using stratified random sampling.Vegetation parameters such as diameter at breast height,diameter at stump height,tree height,and species type were recorded.Results:We found that the average aboveground carbon stock of the study area is 147.6±17.2 t ha^(−1)(mean,SE)across land cover types.Species richness,Shannon index,and functional diversity together explained 73.5%,61.4%,58.9%,and 52.0%of the variation in aboveground carbon storage in woodland,riparian forest,bushland,and farmland,respectively.Functional diversity was a significant predictor explaining the total aboveground carbon stocks(26.7%)across the land cover types.The effects of biodiversity on aboveground carbon storage were mediated by functional diversity and presence and dominance of species.This shows that both the selection effects and the niche complementarity are important for carbon storage.However,the impact of functional diversity effects(niche complementarity)was higher than that of functional dominance effects(selection effects).Conclusions:Implementation of protected area-based ecosystem conservation practices in the country seems feasible to mitigate climate change and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation(REDD+)programme should emphasize on biodiversity conservation. | Dejene W.Sintayehu Anteneh Belayneh Nigussie Dechassa | 2020 | Ecological Processes2020,9,1: | 1 |

| 8 | Valuing the water supply: ecosystem-based potable water supply management for the Legedadie-Dire catchments, Central Ethiopia显示文摘Background:There is a substantial interest in the values that consumers place on drinking water quality and supply.Financial resources are crucial to improving the urban potable water supply in developing countries that are characterized by low-cost recovery rates and a high and rapidly growing demand for more reliable services.This study examined households’willingness to pay(WTP)for the improvement of water services by identifying their water choice decisions and the mode of water supply that they prefer the water supply authority to use among several alternative water supply options.Stated-preference data were collected from 322 randomly selected households in Addis Ababa,who were presented with three sets of choices(three alternative bundle choices,including the reference scenario).The data were analyzed using the mixed logit WTP space model.Three approaches to modeling the distribution of WTP(fixed,uncorrelated,and correlated)using mixed logit WTP space models were compared.Results:Three-quarters of the households agreed to contribute money toward ecosystem-based water supply management(EBWSM)intervention programs on a monthly basis.The average contribution that the respondents were willing to pay was 150.5 Ethiopian Birr(ETB)as a one-off lump sum to kick off the EBWSM activities.Most of the respondents chose a bundle of water supply options that provides risk-free and high-quality water with no months of shortages than moderate water quality that is safe to drink and palatable with 1 month shortages annually.This implies that households would need to be supplied with risk-free,high-quality water without interruption at an appropriate flow pressure.The model with correlations fitted the data well with the highest simulated log-likelihoods at convergence and gave the best estimate of the households’WTP for water improvement.Nearly 46%of the sampled households were willing to pay more than 33 ETB per month,and 49%of the households were willing to pay between 21 ETB and 33 ETB per month for the monthly water bill.Overall,approximately 95%of the sampled households were willing to pay more than 21 ETB.Conclusion:Customers are willing to pay to avoid most types of water supply restrictions.Moreover,WTP is sensitive to the scope of service improvement,income,affixed price,and elicitation method.In summary,mixed logit WTP-space models can help accurately predict household-level WTP,which can be used to select improvements in drinking water access and services in the Legedadie-Dire catchments. | Yilikal Anteneh Gete Zeleke Ephrem Gebremariam | 2019 | Ecological Processes2019,8,1: | 1 |

| 11 | Preparation of large,ultra-flexible and free-standing nanomembranes of metal oxide-polymer composite and their gas permeation properties显示文摘In this work,fabrication of free-standing nanomembranes of metal oxide(MO_(x))and polymers by simple spin-coating method is discussed.First,double-layer nanomembranes containing MO_(x) and epoxy resin of polyethyleneimine and poly[(o-cresyl glycidyl ether)-co-formaldehyde]were prepared.Free-standing nanomembranes were successfully prepared,but defects formed in the metal oxide nanolayer during sharp bending of the nanomembrane.To overcome fragility of MO_(x) nanolayer,poly(vinyl alcohol)nanolayers were introduced between MO_(x) nanolayers by layer-by-layer(LbL)assembly process.The LbL nanomembrane was also free-standing and was highly flexible during macroscopic membrane manipulations.Even after transfer of the LbL nanomembrane onto a porous support,it did not have apparent cracks,confirmed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The LbL nanomembrane sustained low gas permeance,confirming the absence of significant defects,although it shows excellent flexibility.We believe that the presented LbL nanomembrane could be a platform useful for the design of molecular nanochannels,which is the next challenge for efficient gas separation. | Anteneh Mersha Roman Selyanchyn Shigenori Fujikawa | 2017 | Clean Energy2017,1,1: | 0 |
| 12 | An optimal control model with cost effectiveness analysis of Maize streak virus disease in maize plant显示文摘In this paper we formulated and analyzed an optimal deterministic eco-epidemiological model for the dynamics of maize streak virus(MSV)and examine the best strategy to fight maize population from maize streak disease(MSD).The optimal control model is developed with three control interventions,namely prevention(u_(1)),quarantine(u_(2))and chemical control(u_(3)).To achieve an optimal control strategy,we used the Pontryagin’s maximum principle obtain the Hamiltonian,the adjoint variables,the characterization of the controls and the optimality system.Numerical simulations are performed using Forward-backward sweep iterative method.The findings show that each integrated strategy is able to mitigate the disease in the specified time.However due to limited resources,it is important to find a cost-effective strategy.Using Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio(ICER)a cost-effectiveness analysis is investigated and determined that the combination of prevention and quarantine is the best cost-effective strategy from the other integrated strategies.Therefore,policymakers and stakeholders should apply the integrated intervention to stop the spread of MSV in the maize population. | Haileyesus Tessema Alemneh Assefa Sintayehu Kassa Anteneh Asmare Godana | 2021 | Infectious Disease Modelling2021,6,1: | 0 |
| 13 | Mechanisms of bush encroachment and its inter-connection with rangeland degradation in semi-arid African ecosystems:a review显示文摘Many studies show that semi-arid rangelands throughout the world have been rapidly converted from a grassland state to a bush encroachment state during the past 50 years. Bush encroachment includes the spread of local woody species and/or incursion of woody species introduced from other ecosystems into semi-arid savannas and grassland ecosystems. Rangeland degradation due to bush encroachment causes several challenges, affecting the production of livestock and pastoral people livelihoods in most parts of Africa. Scientists have long been attempting to develop schematic and mathematical theories to explain the observed phenomenon of bush encroachment, and several theories were proposed and developed. The well-regarded theories include:(1) Walter's two-layer model,(2) Moir's one-layer model,(3) state-and-transition theory,(4) equilibrium theory,(5) disequilibrium theory, and(6) non-equilibrium theory. Within those theories, the most frequently-indicated driving factors that explain bush encroachment include over-grazing, availability of soil nutrient and moisture, elevated CO2 levels, frequency and intensity of fire, spread of seeds of woody species by livestock and wild animals. It should be stressed that couplings and interactions among diverse driving factors are more often at work in determining the condition of bush encroachment. To summarize, the effort in managing semi-arid ecosystems needs critical knowledge to understand the cause-effect relationships of underlying factors through integrated approach. | 14 | Utilization of the superior properties of highly mesoporous PVP modified NiCo_2O_4 with accessible 3D nanostructure and flower-like morphology towards electrochemical methanol oxidation reaction显示文摘Up to this date,researchers are still facing difficulties to expand the technology of direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs) because of the high overpotential required to oxidize the methanol and its relatively poor performance due to CO poisoning of the leading-high cost anode catalyst.In line with this,we have successfully modified the morphological structure and composition of low cost cobalt based-metal oxides,MCo_2O_4(M = Zn and Ni),with the simple and noble use of polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP) as growth modifier and surface stabilizer during the synthesis of nanoparticles in our previous reports,which shown high electrocatalytic activity and strong stability.Due to the good performance of our PVP modified MCo_2O_4 towards pseudocapacitor and oxygen evolution reaction applications,we decided to extend our research study to methanol oxidation reaction.Remarkably,PVP modified Ni Co_2O_4 electrode directly grown on nickel foam substrate via a simple hydrothermal process exhibited better performance compared with PVP modified ZnCo_2O_4 and NiCo_2O_4 without PVP.It had obtained a remarkably low onset potential of 0.285 V and high current density of 280 m A cm^(-2),and shown great stability and high poison tolerance during a continuous CV cycling and Chronoamperometry test,which attained high efficiency of 86.86%and 98.52%,respectively.These positive results of PVP modified Ni Co_2O_4 electrode towards MOR might be attributed to its hierarchical 3 D nanostructures with highly mesoporous surface and large surface area which may have provided numerous electroactive sites,and the exceptional corrosion stability of Ni Co_2O_4 electrode in alkaline solution. | Gracita M.Tomboc Medhen W.Abebe Anteneh F.Baye Hern Kim | 2019 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2019,28,2: | 0 |
