3Charge Transport in Disordered Graphene-Based Low Dimensional Materials显示文摘Two-dimensional graphene,carbon nanotubes,and graphene nanoribbons represent a novel class of low dimensional materials that could serve as building blocks for future carbon-based nanoelectronics.Although these systems share a similar underlying electronic structure,whose exact details depend on confi nement effects,crucial differences emerge when disorder comes into play.In this review,we consider the transport properties of these materials,with particular emphasis on the case of graphene nanoribbons.After summarizing the electronic and transport properties of defect-free systems,we focus on the effects of a model disorder potential(Anderson-type),and illustrate how transport properties are sensitive to the underlying symmetry.We provide analytical expressions for the elastic mean free path of carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons,and discuss the onset of weak and strong localization regimes,which are genuinely dependent on the transport dimensionality.We also consider the effects of edge disorder and roughness for graphene nanoribbons in relation to their armchair or zigzag orientation.Alessandro Cresti Norbert Nemec Blanca Biel Gabriel Niebler François Triozon Gianaurelio Cuniberti Stephan Roche 2008Nano Research2008,1,5:10

6Brain-derived neurotrophic factor plasma levels and premature cognitive impairment/dementia in type 2 diabetes显示文摘AIM To assess the relationship of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) with cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS The study included 40 patients with diabetes mellitus type 2(DM2), 37 patients with chronic kidney disease in hem dialysis hemodialysis therapy(HD) and 40 healthy subjects. BDNF in serum was quantified by ELISA. The Folstein Mini-Mental State Examination was used to evaluate cognitive impairment.RESULTS The patients with DM2 and the patients in HD were categorized into two groups, with cognitive impairment and without cognitive impairment. The levels of BDNF showed significant differences between patients with DM2(43.78 ± 9.05 vs 31.55 ± 10.24, P = 0.005). There were no differences between patients in HD(11.39 ± 8.87 vs 11.11 ± 10.64 P = 0.77); interestingly, ferritin levels were higher in patients with cognitive impairment(1564 ± 1335 vs 664 ± 484 P = 0.001). The comparison of BDNF values, using a Kruskal Wallis test, between patients with DM2, in HD and healthy controls showed statistical differences(P < 0.001).CONCLUSION Low levels of BDNF are associated with cognitive impairment in patients with DM2. 7Selecting suitable solid organ transplant donors: Reducing the risk of donor-transmitted infections显示文摘Selection of the appropriate donor is essential to a successful allograft recipient outcome for solid organ transplantation. Multiple infectious diseases have been transmitted from the donor to the recipient via transplantation. Donor-transmitted infections cause increased morbidity and mortality to the recipient. In recent years, a series of high-profile transmissions of infections have occurred in organ recipients prompt-ing increased attention on the process of improving the selection of an appropriate donor that balances the shortage of needed allografts with an approach that mitigates the risk of donor-transmitted infection to the recipient. Important advances focused on improving donor screening diagnostics, using previously excluded high-risk donors, and individualizing the selection of allografts to recipients based on their prior infection history are serving to increase the donor pool and improve outcomes after transplant. 8Serum levels of undercarboxylated osteocalcin are related to cardiovascular risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and healthy subjects显示文摘AIM To determine a potential relationship between serum undercarboxylated(uc OC) concentration and cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes(T2D) patients and healthy subjects(HS).METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 140 subjects classified into two groups, 70 with T2D and 70 HS. Medical history and physical examination with anthropometric measurements were obtained from all subjects. Body fat percentage was determined by bioelectrical impendency analysis. Serum uc OC concentration was determined by enzyme immunoassay,while serum levels of insulin and hsC RP were obtained using high sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Insulin resistance was determined using the homeostasis model assessment-IR. Lipid profile [triglycerides,total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoproteins(HDL-c),low density lipoproteins(LDL-c), very low-density lipoproteins] was determined by spectrophotometry and standard formulas when applicable. RESULTS The T2D patient group showed significantly higher values of waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, systolic blood pressure(SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP),current smoking, and alcohol use when compared to the HS group(P < 0.05). We observed a significantly lower serum ucO C concentration in T2D than in HS(1.5 ± 1.4vs 2.3 ± 1.8, P < 0.05). In the whole study population,ucO C concentration was inversely correlated with body mass index(BMI)(r =-0.236, P < 0.05), fasting plasma glucose(r =-0.283, P < 0.01) and HDL-c(r =-0.255,P < 0.05); and positively correlated with LDL-c/HDL-c ratio(r = 0.306, P < 0.05) and TC/HDL-c ratio(r =0.284, P < 0.05). In the T2D group, serum uc OC concentration was inversely correlated with BMI(r =-0.310, P < 0.05) and body-fat percentage(r =-0.311,P < 0.05), and positively correlated with DBP(r = 0.450,P < 0.01). In HS group a positive correlation between serum levels of uc OC and SBP(r = 0.277, P < 0.05)was observed. 9Recent Advances in Synthesis and Properties of Hybrid Halide Perovskites for Photovoltaics显示文摘The progress made by the scientific community in emerging photovoltaic technologies over the past two decades has been outstanding. Numerous methods have been developed for the preparation of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells. The power conversion efficiency has been up to 14% by a one-step vacuum deposition technique. A serious concern is the toxicity of the materials. In this review, several methods aimed at resolving these problems to some extent have been compiled, including eco-friendly synthesis. Further efficiency enhancements are expected following optimization, and a better fundamental understanding of the internal electron charge transfer, electron–hole diffusion to the corresponding layers, flexibility, and stability-dependent bandgaps is reported. This paper explores the green synthesis of organic–inorganic perovskites for industrialization. 11磺酸多相催化剂用于二甲基亚砜中C_6-单糖脱水制5-羟甲基糠醛(英)显示文摘Sulfonic acid-functionalized heterogeneous catalysts have been evaluated in the catalytic dehydration of C(,monosaccharides into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF) using dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)as solvent.Sulfonic commercial resin Amberlyst-70 was the most active catalyst,which was ascribed to its higher concentration of sulfonic acid sites as compared with the other catalysts,and it gave 93 mol%yield of HMF from fructose in 1 h.With glucose as the starting material,which is a much more difficult reaction,the reaction conditions(time,temperature,and catalyst loading) were optimized for Amberlyst-70 by a response surface methodology,which gave a maximum HMF yield of 33 mol%at 147 °C with 23 wt%catalyst loading based on glucose and 24 h reaction time.DMSO promotes the dehydration of glucose into anhydroglucose,which acts as a reservoir of the substrate to facilitate the production of HMF by reducing side reactions.Catalyst reuse without a regeneration treatment showed a gradual but not very significant decay in catalytic activity.Gabriel Morales Juan A.Melero Marta Paniagua Jose Iglesias Blanca Hernandez Maria Sanz 2014催化学报2014,35,5:4
12Effectiveness of dry needling on reducing pain intensity in patients with myofascial pain syndrome: a Meta-analysis显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To summarize the literature about the effectiveness of dry needling(DN) on relieving pain and increasing range of motion(ROM) in individuals with myofascial pain syndrome(MPS).METHODS: Papers published from January 2000 to January 2013 were identified through an electronic search in the databases MEDLINE, Dialnet, Cochrane Library Plus, Physiotherapy Evidence Database(PEDro) and Spanish Superior Council of Scientific Research(CSIC). The studies included were randomized controlled trials written in English and/or Spanish about the effectiveness of DN on pain and ROM in individuals with MPS.RESULTS: Out of 19 clinical trials that were potentially relevant, a total of 10 were included in the Meta-analysis. Regarding pain intensity reduction when measured before and immediately after the intervention, DN achieved improvement compared with the placebo treatment [d =-0.49; 95% CI(-3.21, 0.42)] and with the control group [d =-9.13;95% CI(- 14.70,- 3.56)]. However, other treatments achieved better results on the same variable compared with DN, considering the measurements for pre-treatment and immediately after [d = 2.54;95% CI(-0.40, 5.48)], as well as the pre-treatment and after 3-4 weeks [d = 4.23; 95% CI(0.78, 7.68)].DN showed a significantly increased ROM when measured before the intervention and immediately after, in comparison with the placebo [d = 2.00;95% CI(1.60, 2.41)]. However, other treatments achieved a significant better result regarding ROM when it was measured before the intervention and immediately after, as compared with DN [d =-1.42;95% CI(-1.84,-0.99)].CONCLUSION: DN was less effective on decreasing pain comparing to the placebo group. Other treatments were more effective than DN on reducing pain after 3-4 weeks. 14Kinetics and mechanisms of the catalytic thermal cracking of asphaltenes adsorbed on supported nanoparticles显示文摘The production of heavy and extra-heavy oil is challenging because of the rheological properties that crude oil presents due to its high asphaltene content.The upgrading and recovery processes of these unconventional oils are typically water and energy intensive,which makes such processes costly and environmentally unfriendly.Nanoparticle catalysts could be used to enhance the upgrading and recovery of heavy oil under both in situ and ex situ conditions.In this study,the effect of the Ni-Pd nanocatalysts supported on fumed silica nanoparticles on post-adsorption catalytic thermal cracking of n-C_7 asphaltenes was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with FTIR.The performance of catalytic thermal cracking of n-C_7asphaltenes in the presence of NiO and PdO supported on fumed silica nanoparticles was better than on the fumed silica support alone.For a fixed amount of adsorbed n-C_7asphaltenes(0.2 mg/m^2),bimetallic nanoparticles showed better catalytic behavior than monometallic nanoparticles,confirming their synergistic effects.The corrected OzawaFlynn-Wall equation(OFW) was used to estimate the effective activation energies of the catalytic process.The mechanism function,kinetic parameters,and transition state thermodynamic functions for the thermal cracking process of n-C_7 asphaltenes in the presence and absence of nanoparticles are investigated.Tatiana Montoya Blanca L.Argel Nashaat N.Nassar Camilo A.Franco Farid B.Cortés 2016Petroleum Science2016,13,3:2
15Cognitive disorder and dementia in type 2 diabetes mellitus显示文摘Insulin,a key pleiotropic hormone,regulates metabolism through several signaling pathways in target tissues including skeletal muscle,liver,and brain.In the brain,insulin modulates learning and memory,and impaired insulin signaling is associated with metabolic dysregulation and neurodegenerative diseases.At the receptor level,in aging and Alzheimer’s disease(AD)models,the amount of insulin receptors and their functions are decreased.Clinical and animal model studies suggest that memory improvements are due to changes in insulin levels.Furthermore,diabetes mellitus(DM)and insulin resistance are associated with age-related cognitive decline,increased levels ofβ-amyloid peptide,phosphorylation of tau protein;oxidative stress,pro-inflammatory cytokine production and dyslipidemia. Recent evidence shows that deleting brain insulin receptors leads to mildobesity and insulin resistance without influencing brain size and apoptosis development.Conversely, deleting insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) affects brain size anddevelopment, and contributes to behavior changes. Insulin is synthesized locally in the brain andis released from the neurons. Here, we reviewed proposed pathophysiological hypotheses toexplain increased risk of dementia in the presence of DM. Regardless of the exact sequence ofevents leading to neurodegeneration, there is strong evidence that mitochondrial dysfunctionplays a key role in AD and DM. A triple transgenic mouse model of AD showed mitochondrialdysfunction, oxidative stress, and loss of synaptic integrity. These alterations are comparable tothose induced in wild-type mice treated with sucrose, which is consistent with the proposal thatmitochondrial alterations are associated with DM and contribute to AD development. Alterationsin insulin/IGF-1 signaling in DM could lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and low antioxidantcapacity of the cell. 16Modifi cation of sleep architecture in an animal model of experimental cirrhosis显示文摘AIM: To analyze the polygraphic sleep patterns during cirrhosis progression in a rat model by repeated CCl4 administration. METHODS: Male Wistar rats received three weekly injections of CCl4 for 11 wk, and were analyzed before and during the induction of cirrhosis. Rats were implanted with electrodes to record their sleep patterns. Polygraph recordings were made weekly over 11 wk for 8 h, during the light period. After a basal recording, rats received three weekly injections of CCl4. Histological conf irmation of cirrhosis was performed after 11 wk.RESULTS: The results showed a progressive decrease in total wake time that reached statistical signif icance from the second week of treatment. In addition, there was an increase in total time of slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep) in most of the 11 wk. SWS showed no signif icant variations.During the final weeks, a significant increase in REM sleep frequency was also observed. Histological analyses of the livers showed unequivocal signs of cirrhosis. 18Biochar and sugar cane filter cake interaction on physical and hydrological soil properties under tropical field conditions显示文摘Biochar is known for its effects on carbon sequestration and soil fertility.However,there is a lack of information about its effects on soil physical and hydraulic properties for tropical soils.We assessed the effects of biochar(BC)plus sugar cane filter cake(FC)rate,and time of interaction on soil physical and hydraulic properties under humid tropical conditions.For this purpose,a field experiment was installed at a loamy sandy soil with five treatments and four replicates:control(only soil),25 Mg ha^(−1) sugar cane filter cake,and 25 Mg ha^(−1) sugar cane filter cake plus 6.25,12.5,and 25 Mg ha^(−1) Miscanthus biochar,respectively,two soil depths(0-10 and 10-20 cm)and two times of interaction(9 and 18 months).Physical prop-erties(aggregate stability,bulk density,total porosity,pores size distribution)and hydraulic properties(soil water holding capacity,hydraulic conductivity,plant-available water holding capacity)were measured after nine and eighteen months.The bulk density decreased slightly,and the porosity increased after nine months,for the biochar plus sugar cane filter cake(both 25 Mg ha^(−1)).After 18 months,biochar plus filter cake interaction increase micropores,aggregate stability,and plant-available water content.Saturated hydraulic conductivity was not influenced by sugar cane filter cake.However,biochar significantly reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity when combined with sugar cane filter cake after 18 months.We concluded that sugar cane filter cake in combination with biochar modified the pore size distribution,slightly increased plant-available water holding capacity,and significantly decreased saturated hydraulic conductivity.Sara de Jesus Duarte Bruno Glaser Blanca Lucia Prado Pano Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino Cerri 2020Biochar2020,2,2:2

20Qigong improves balance in young women: a pilot study显示文摘BACKGROUND: Balance problems are common in people of all ages and can lead to falls, thus causing fractures with consequent disability. Qigong practice has long been part of daily life in Chinese culture, and has good effects on physical health maintenance. OBJECTIVE: The present work describes the change in balance in young, healthy women after practising Qigong for eight weeks. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS: The study took the form of a controlled, randomised longitudinal trial, and involved 30 women aged 18-25 years. The subjects had no prior experience of Qigong or Tai Chi and were unaware of the aims of the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to a Qigong intervention group or a control group. Those in the Qigong intervention group performed 'exercises in 20 figures for health and long-life' (Wang Ziping) for 1 h twice per week, for 4 weeks. The control group undertook no exercise at all. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The main outcome measure was the stabilometry values. These were obtained in a unipodal support test, using a plantar pressure platform with optical sensors. RESULTS: The Qigong subjects showed a significant improvement in their stabilometry results (40.1% pre-intervention and 56.4% post-intervention) (P<0.045), while no improvement was seen in the control group (51.2% pre-intervention and 53.5% post-intervention). At the beginning of the intervention, the stabilometry values recorded for the Qigong intervention group were worse than those recorded for the control group (40.15% and 51.21% respectively; P=0.121). However, a comparison of the post-intervention values between these groups showed that these differences have disappeared (P=0.653).
