| 1 | Comparison of physiological responses to oxidative and heavy metal stress in seedlings of rice paddy, Oryza sativa L.显示文摘Physiological responses on the bases of activities of antioxidant enzymes: peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase as well as estimation of total protein, lipid peroxidation and thiols in the form of protein, non\|protein, glutathione and phytochelatin measured in growing seedlings of paddy, Oryza sativa L., from day 2 to 8 were compared following treatment of seeds for 5h with oxidative agents, paraquat 5 × 10 -5 , 10 -4 , 10 -3 mol/L, H 2O 2 10 -3 , 5×10 -3 , 10 -2 mol/L, and CdCl 2 10 -5 , 10 -4 , 5×10 -3 mol/L. A significant induction of all antioxidant enzymes along with an increase in the levels of protein, lipid peroxidation and glutathione was noted in response to oxidative stress, CdCl 2 induced significant peroxidase and catalase activities but not superoxide dismutase. In a marked contrast from oxidative stress, CdCl 2 decreased glutathione reductase activity as well as glutathione levels but increased phytochelatin level. | 2 | Synthesis of MnxOy@C hybrid composites for optimal electromagnetic wave absorption capacity and wideband absorption显示文摘The fabrication of high-performance electromagnetic(EM)wave absorption(EMA)materials is an effective strategy to deal with ever-increasing EM pollution.In this work,a series of manganese oxides/porous carbon(Mn_(x)O_(y)@C)hybrid composites are obtained by a two-step process.It is revealed that different manganese oxides play various influence on the dielectric properties of absorbers.Owing to the moderate complex permittivity of MnO@C hybrid composites,the optimal reflection loss could reach as high as-76.0 dB at the matching thickness of 2.0 mm with 5.2 GHz of effective absorption bandwidth at thickness of 2.1 mm.We demonstrated that the addition of porous carbon is vital for enhancing EMA performance of composites,which not only coordinates impedance matching allowing more EM waves enter the absorber,but also provides the path for electron movement,thus profiting conductive loss.Besides,different heterogeneous interfaces including porous carbon,manganese oxide and so on,are conducive to contribution of interface polarization.The most noteworthy is ingenious design of composite materials and systematic research of EM energy attenuation mechanism in this work will provide the possibility to realize high-performance EMA. | Yue Liu Xuehua Liu Xinyu E Bingbing Wang Zirui Jia Qingguo Chi Guanglei Wu | 2022 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2022,,8: | 3 |
| 3 | Rapid phenotypic evolution with shallow genomic differentiation during early stages of high elevation adaptation in Eurasian Tree Sparrows显示文摘Known as the‘third polar region’,the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau represents one of the harshest highland environments in the world and yet a number of organisms thrive there.Previous studies of birds,animals and humans have focused on well-differentiated populations in later stages of phenotypic divergence.The adaptive processes during the initial phase of highland adaptation remain poorly understood.We studied a human commensal,the Eurasian Tree Sparrow,which has followed human agriculture to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.Despite strong phenotypic differentiation at multiple levels,in particular in muscle-related phenotypes,highland and lowland populations show shallow genomic divergence and the colonization event occurred within the past few thousand years.In a one-month acclimation experiment investigating phenotypic plasticity,we exposed adult lowland tree sparrows to a hypoxic environment and did not observe muscle changes.Through population genetic analyses,we identified a signature of polygenic adaptation,whereby shifts in allele frequencies are spread across multiple loci,many of which are associated with muscle-related processes.Our results reveal a case of positive selection in which polygenic adaptation appears to drive rapid phenotypic evolution,shedding light on early stages of adaptive evolution to a novel environment. | Yanhua Qu Chunhai Chen Ying Xiong Huishang She Yong E Zhang Yalin Cheng Shane DuBay Dongming Li Per G P Ericson Yan Hao Hongyuan Wang Hongfeng Zhao Gang Song Hailin Zhang Ting Yang Chi Zhang Liping Liang Tianyu Wu Jinyang Zhao Qiang Gao Weiwei Zhai Fumin Lei | 2020 | National Science Review2020,7,1: | 2 |
| 4 | Noise-induced hearing loss in the 21^(st) century: A research and translational update显示文摘Millions of people worldwide are exposed to harmful levels of noise daily in their work and leisure environment. This makes noise-induced hearing loss(NIHL) a major occupational health risk globally. NIHL is the second most common form of acquired hearing loss after agerelated hearing loss and is itself a major contributing factor to presbycusis. Temporary threshold shifts, once thought to be relatively harmless and recoverable, are now known to cause permanent cochlear injury leading to permanent loss of hearing sensitivity. This article reviews the current understanding of the cellular and molecular pathophysiology of NIHL with latest findings from animal models. Therapeutic approaches to protect against or to mitigate NIHL are discussed based on their proposed action against these known mechanisms of cochlear injury. Successes in identifying genes that predispose individuals to NIHL by candidate gene association studies are discussed with matched gene knockout animal models. This links to exciting developments in experimental gene therapy to replace and regenerate lost hair cells and post-noise otoprotective therapies currently being investigated in clinical trials.
