1Comparative analysis of radiofrequency ablation and resection for resectable colorectal liver metastases显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of radiofrequency ablation(RFA)for resectable colorectal liver metastases(CRLM)compared with that of resection.METHODS:Between June 2004 and June 2009,we retrospectively analyzed 29 patients with resectable CRLMs;17 patients underwent RFA,and 12 underwent hepatic resection.All of the patients were informed about the treatment modalities and were allowed to choose either of them.RFA including an intraoperative approach was performed by a radiologist;otherwise,hepatic resection was performed by a surgeon.Comparative analysis of the two groups was performed,including comparisons of gender,age,and clinical outcomes,such as primary tumor stage and survival rates.RESULTS:The mean tumor size was significantly larger in the resection group(3.59 cm vs 2.02 cm,P<0.01),and the 5-year overall survival(OS)rate for all patients was 44.7%.There was no difference in the 5-year OS rates between the RFA and resection groups(37.8%vs66.7%).Univariate analysis indicated significantly lower5-year OS rates for patients with a tumor size>3cm.The 5-year disease-free survival(DFS)rates were17.6%and 22.2%in the RFA and resection groups,respectively(P=0.119).Univariate analysis revealed that in cases of male gender,age>65 years,T stage<Ⅳ,absence of lymphatic metastasis,and tumor size>3 cm,RFA resulted in significantly inferior 5-year DFS rates compared with surgical resection.CONCLUSION:Surgical resection revealed superior outcomes in the treatment of resectable CRLMs,particularly in cases with a hepatic tumor size>3 cm.Sanghwa Ko Hongjae Jo Seongpil Yun Eunyoung Park Suk Kim Hyung-Il Seo 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,2:12

3Anisotropic,Wrinkled,and Crack-Bridging Structure for Ultrasensitive,Highly Selective Multidirectional Strain Sensors显示文摘Flexible multidirectional strain sensors are crucial to accurately determining the complex strain states involved in emerging sensing applications.Although considerable efforts have been made to construct anisotropic structures for improved selective sensing capabilities,existing anisotropic sensors suffer from a trade-off between high sensitivity and high stretchability with acceptable linearity.Here,an ultrasensitive,highly selective multidirectional sensor is developed by rational design of functionally different anisotropic layers.The bilayer sensor consists of an aligned carbon nanotube(CNT)array assembled on top of a periodically wrinkled and cracked CNT-graphene oxide film.The transversely aligned CNT layer bridge the underlying longitudinal microcracks to effectively discourage their propagation even when highly stretched,leading to superior sensitivity with a gauge factor of 287.6 across a broad linear working range of up to 100%strain.The wrinkles generated through a pre-straining/releasing routine in the direction transverse to CNT alignment is responsible for exceptional selectivity of 6.3,to the benefit of accurate detection of loading directions by the multidirectional sensor.This work proposes a unique approach to leveraging the inherent merits of two cross-influential anisotropic structures to resolve the trade-off among sensitivity,selectivity,and stretchability,demonstrating promising applications in full-range,multi-axis human motion detection for wearable electronics and smart robotics.Heng Zhang Dan Liu Jeng-Hun Lee Haomin Chen Eunyoung Kim Xi Shen Qingbin Zheng Jinglei Yang Jang-Kyo Kim 2021Nano-Micro Letters2021,13,8:3
4Paths out of poverty:International experience显示文摘The global community has committed,as the first priority of the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.While the decline of global poverty continues,progress has slowed and remains uneven through different parts of the world.To ensure that no one is left behind in China and beyond,research will be critical to inform paths out of poverty.In this regard,it is valuable to take stock of international experiences and the various pathways out of poverty with a focus on agriculture.Africa's agricultural growth has been largely driven by land expansion and poverty reduction has been the slowest among all regions.South Asia agriculture has been led by diversification of smallholder agriculture and its poverty reduction impact has been large,but its future poverty reduction is limited by rural–urban migration and lack of formal jobs in urban centers.Social protection programs have been used by many Latin American countries as the region is more urbanized than any other developing regions.China's agricultural and economic success was driven by agriculture-led reforms and rural development.These changes brought significantly higher incomes among rural residents,which accounted for highest initial levels of poverty and hunger,and in increased availability of food at affordable prices.Investments in nutrition,health,education,clean water,and good sanitation also complemented progress.The foremost lesson is that smallholder-led agriculture growth in land scarce countries often have the largest impact on poverty reduction.Secondly,nonfarm employment and rural–urban migration must follow once agricultural productivity has reached a certain level.However,premature exiting from agriculture can do more harm.Thirdly,even before large scale poverty reduction through sectoral and regional development is exhausted,social safety nets must be established to cover those who have not benefited from growth and development.Productive social safety nets have proven to be cost-effective in many countries.Urban poverty should also be part of the protection scheme when large proportion of rural population moves to cities.FAN Sheng-gen Emily EunYoung CHO 2021Journal of Integrative Agriculture2021,20,4:2
5Overcoming the obstacles of current photodynamic therapy in tumors using nanoparticles显示文摘Photodynamic therapy(PDT)has been applied in clinical treatment of tumors for a long time.However,insufficient supply of pivotal factors including photosensitizer(PS),light,and oxygen in tumor tissue dramatically reduces the therapeutic efficacy of PDT.Nanoparticles have received an influx of attention as drug carriers,and recent studies have demonstrated their promising potential to overcome the obstacles of PDT in tumor tissue.Physicochemical optimization for passive targeting,ligand modification for active targeting,and stimuli-responsive release achieved efficient delivery of PS to tumor tissue.Various trials using upconversion NPs,two-photon lasers,X-rays,and bioluminescence have provided clues for efficient methods of light delivery to deep tissue.Attempts have been made to overcome unfavorable tumor microenvironments via artificial oxygen generation,Fenton reaction,and combination with other chemical drugs.In this review,we introduce these creative approaches to addressing the hurdles facing PDT in tumors.In particular,the studies that have been validated in animal experiments are preferred in this review over proof-of-concept studies that were only performed in cells.Donghyun Lee Soonmin Kwon Seok-young Jang Eunyoung Park Yeeun Lee Heebeom Koo 2022Bioactive Materials2022,7,2:2
6New strategy for reversal tolerant anode for automotive polymer electrolyte fuel cell显示文摘Since the commercialization of the fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system has been actively improved as a powertrain for ultimate environment-friendly vehicle. During the FCEV operation, various transient conditions such as start-up/shut-down and fuel starvation occur irregularly, which deteriorates the durability of the membrane electrode assembly. In particular, when fuel starvation occurs, the carbon support in the anode is oxidized within few minutes, thus the mitigation of this phenomenon is essential for securing the durability. This short review introduces the concept of reversal tolerant anode (RTA), which is a mitigation method using an oxygen evolution catalyst and reviews some previous reports. 7Red meat intake and the risk of endometrial cancer:Metaanalysis of observational studies显示文摘AIM:To evaluate whether red meat intake is related to the risk of endometrial cancer(EC) using meta-analysis.METHODS:We searched Pub Med,EMBASE,and the Cochrane Library up to June 2013,using common keywords related to red meat and EC.Case-control studies and cohort studies comparing the risk of endometrial cancer among categories by the amount of intake were included.Eleven case-control studies and five cohort studies met our criteria.We performed a conventional and a dose-response meta-analysis of case-control studies using the Der Simonian-Laird method for random-effects.For cohort studies we performed a conventional meta-analysis.Publication bias was evaluated using Egger's test.RESULTS:In the meta-analysis of 11 case-control studies including 5419 cases and 12654 controls,higher red meat consumption was associated with an increased risk of EC [summary relative risk(SRR) = 1.43,95%CI:1.15-1.79;I2 = 73.3% comparing extreme intake categories).In a dose-response analysis,for red meat intake of 100 g/d,SRR was 1.84(95%CI:1.64-2.05).In contrast,in the meta-analysis of five prospective studies including a total of 2549 cases among 247746 participants,no significant association between red meat intake and EC risk(SRR = 0.97,95%CI:0.85-1.11;I2 = 4.9% comparing extreme intake categories) was observed.CONCLUSION:Our meta-analysis found a significantlinear association between red meat intake and EC risk based on case-control studies but this was not confirmed in prospective studies.Woong Ju Na Na Keum Dong Hoon Lee Yun Hwan Kim Seung Cheol Kim Eric L Ding Eunyoung Cho 2015World Journal of Meta-Analysis2015,3,2:2
