1Long baroclinic Rossby waves with periods of about 500 d near 20°N in the northwest Pacific Ocean显示文摘On the basis of maps of sea level anomalies data set from October 1992 to January 2004, pronounced low frequency variations with periods of about 500 d are detected in the area near 20°N from 160°W to 130°E. A linear two-layer model is employed to explain the mechanism. It is found that the first-mode long baroclinic Rossby waves at 20°N in the northwest Pacific propagate westward in the form of free waves at a speed of about 10.3 cm/s. This confirms that the observed low frequency variabilities appear as baroclinic Rossby waves. 2The numerical investigation of seasonal variation of the cold water mass in the Beibu Gulf and its mechanisms显示文摘A wave-tide-circulation coupled model based on the Princeton Ocean Model is established to explore the seasonal variation of the cold water mass in the Beibu Gulf and its mechanisms. The results show that the cold water mass starts forming in March, reaches the maximum strength during June and July, and fades away since October. Strong mixing in winter transports the cold water from sea surface to bottom. The cold water mass remains in the bottom layer as the thermocline strengthens during spring, except for the shallow water where the themocline is broken by strong tidal mixing, which gradually separate the cold water mass from its surrounding warm water. Further analysis on the ocean current and stream function confirms that the cold water mass in the Beibu Gulf is locally developed, with an anticlockwise circulation caused by a strong temperature gradient. 4A review of progress in coupled ocean-atmosphere model developments for ENSO studies in China显示文摘El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) is the strongest interannual signal that is producedby basinscale processes in the tropical Pacific,with significant effects on weather and climate worldwide.In the past,extensive and intensive international efforts have been devoted to coupled model developments for ENSO studies.A hierarchy of coupled ocean-atmo sphere models has been formulated;in terms of their complexity,they can be categorized into intermediate coupled models(ICMs),hybrid coupled models(HCMs),and fully coupled general circulation models(CGCMs).ENSO modeling has made significant progress over the past decades,reaching a stage where coupled models can now be used to successfully predict ENSO events 6 months to one year in advance.Meanwhile,ENSO exhibits great diversity and complexity as observed in nature,which still cannot be adequately captured by current state-of-the-art coupled models,presenting a challenge to ENSO modeling.We primarily reviewed the long-term efforts in ENSO modeling continually and steadily made at different institutions in China;some selected representative examples are presented here to review the current status of ENSO model developments and applications,which have been actively pursued with noticeable progress being made recently.As ENSO simulations are very sensitive to model formulations and process representations etc.,dedicated efforts have been devoted to ENSO model developments and improvements.Now,different ocean-atmosphere coupled models have been available in China,which exhibit good model performances and have already had a variety of applications to climate modeling,including the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6).Nevertheless,large biases and uncertainties still exist in ENSO simulations and predictions,and there are clear rooms for their improvements,which are still an active area of researches and applications.Here,model performances of ENSO simulations are assessed in terms of advantages and disadvantages with these differently formulated coupled models,pinpointing to the areas where they need to be further improved for ENSO studies.These analyses provide valuable guidance for future improvements in ENSO simulations and predictions.ZHANG Rong-Hua YU Yongqiang SONG Zhenya REN Hong-Li TANG Youmin QIAO Fangli WU Tongwen GAO Chuan HU Junya TIAN Feng ZHU Yuchao CHEN Lin LIU Hailong LIN Pengfei WU Fanghua WANG Lin 2020Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,4:4
5Using big data to track marine oil transportation along the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road显示文摘China's designation of the '21 st-century Maritime Silk Road'(MSR) region is of extraordinary significance to its maritime rights, transportation security, and socio-economic development. We developed a technical framework allowing the use of 'big data' derived from the Automatic Identification System(AIS, an automatic ship-tracking network) for two purposes: the accurate mapping of oil tanker trajectories and the creation of heat maps showing the relative use of oil tanker routes and marine shipping chokepoints. We then applied these methods to 1.5 billion AIS records collected within the MSR in 2014 to statistically identify and analyze busy routes, areas, and chokepoints in this strategic region. 6CO_2 selective hydrogenation to synthetic natural gas(SNG) over four nano-sized Ni/ZrO_2 samples:ZrO_2 crystalline phase & treatment impact显示文摘Two type zirconia(monoclinic and tetragonal phase ZrO_2) carriers were synthesized via hydrothermal route,and nano-sized zirconia supported nickel catalysts were prepared by incipient impregnation then followed thermal treatment at 300℃ to 500℃,for the CO_2 selective hydrogenation to synthetic natural gas(SNG).The catalysts were characterized by XRD,CO_2-TPD-MS,XPS,TPSR(CH_4,CO_2) techniques.For comparison,the catalyst NZ-W-400(monoclinic) synthesized in water solvent exhibited a better catalytic activity than the catalyst NZ-M-400(tetragonal) prepared in methanol solvent.The catalyst NZ-W-400 displayed more H_2 absorbed sites,more basic sites and a lower temperature of initial CO_2 activation.Then,the thermal treatment of monoclinic ZrO_2 supported nickel precursor was manufactured at three temperature of 350,400,500℃.The TPSR experiments displayed that there were the lower temperature for CO_2 activation and initial conversion(185℃) as well as the lower peak temperature of CH_4 generation(318℃),for the catalyst calcined at 500℃.This sample contained the more basic sites and the higher catalytic activity,evidenced byCO_2-TPD-MS and performance measurement.As for the NZ-W-350 sample,which exhibited the less basic sites and the lower catalytic activity,its initial temperature for CO_2 activation and conversion was higher(214℃) as well as the higher peak temperature of CH_4 formation(382℃).Min Chen Zhanglong Guo Jian Zheng Fangli Jing Wei Chu 2016Journal of Energy Chemistry2016,25,6:3
7VPS4B mutation impairs the osteogenic differentiation of dental follicle cells derived from a patient with dentin dysplasia type I显示文摘A splicing mutation in VPS4B can cause dentin dysplasia type I(DD-I),a hereditary autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by rootless teeth,the etiology of which is genetically heterogeneous.In our study,dental follicle cells(DFCs)were isolated and cultured from a patient with DD-I and compared with those from an age-matched,healthy control.In a previous study,this DD-I patient was confirmed to have a loss-of-function splicing mutation in VPS4B(IVS7+46C>G).The results from this study showed that the isolated DFCs were vimentin-positive and CK14-negative,indicating that the isolated cells were derived from the mesenchyme.DFCs harboring the VPS4B mutation had a significantly higher proliferation rate from day 3 to day 8 than control DFCs,indicating that VPS4B is involved in cell proliferation.The cells were then replenished with osteogenic medium to investigate how the VPS4B mutation affected osteogenic differentiation.Induction of osteogenesis,detected by alizarin red and alkaline phosphatase staining in vitro,was decreased in the DFCs from the DD-I patient compared to the control DFCs.Furthermore,we also found that the VPS4B mutation in the DD-I patient downregulated the expression of osteoblast-related genes,such as ALP,BSP,OCN,RUNX2,and their encoded proteins.These outcomes confirmed that the DD-I-associated VPS4B mutation could decrease the capacity of DFCs to differentiate during the mineralization process and may also impair physiological root formation and bone remodeling.This might provide valuable insights and implications for exploring the pathological mechanisms underlying DD-I root development.Qiang Li Fangli Lu Tianxuan Chen Ke Zhang Yuping Lu Xiaocong Li Yingying Wang Ling Liu Qing Tian Fu Xiong Dong Chen 2020International Journal of Oral Science2020,12,3:2
8A shedding soluble form of interleukin-17 receptor D exacerbates collagen-induced arthritis through facilitating TNF-α-dependent receptor clustering显示文摘Rheumatoid arthritis(RA)is exacerbated by TNF-alpha signaling.However,it remains unclear whether TNF-α-activated TNFR1 and TNFR2 are regulated by extracellular factors.Here,we showed that soluble glycosylated interleukin-17 receptor D(sIL-17RD),which was produced by proteolytic cleavage,enhanced TNF-α-induced RA.We revealed that IL-17RD shedding was induced by the proteolytic enzyme TACE and enhanced by TNF-αexpression in macrophages.Intriguingly,sIL-17RD was elevated in the sera of arthritic mice and rats.Recombinant sIL-17RD significantly enhanced the TNF-α-induced proinflammatory response by promoting TNF-α-TNFR-sIL-17RD complex formation and receptor clustering,leading to the accelerated development of collagen-induced arthritis.Our observations revealed that ectodomain shedding of IL-17RD occurred in RA to boost the TNF-α-induced inflammatory response.Targeting sIL-17RD may provide a new strategy for the therapy of RA.Sihan Liu Yanxia Fu Kunrong Mei Yinan Jiang Xiaojun Sun Yinyin Wang Fangli Ren Congshan Jiang Liesu Meng Shemin Lu Zhihai Qin Chen Dong Xinquan Wang Zhijie Chang Shigao Yang 2021Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,8:1

10Barrier and compensation layers in the East China Sea显示文摘Climatology of the isothermal layer depth(ILD)and the mixed layer depth(MLD)has been produced from in-situ temperature-salinity observations in the East China Sea(ECS)since 1925.The methods applied on the global are used to compute the ILD and the MLD in the ECS with a temperature criterion ΔT=0.8 ℃ for the ILD,and a density criterion with a threshold Δσθ corresponding to fixed ΔT=0.8 ℃ for the MLD,respectively.With the derived climatology ILD and MLD,the monthly variations of the barrier layer(BL)and the compensation layer(CL)in the ECS are analyzed.The BL mainly exists in the shallow water region of the ECS during April-June with thickness larger than 15 m.From December to next March,the area along the shelf break from northeast of Taiwan Island to the northeast ECS is characterized by the CL.Two kinds of main temperature-salinity structures of the CL in this area are given.CHEN Xianyao QIAO Fangli WANG Qin WANG Xiuhongx YUAN Yeli 2008Acta Oceanologica Sinica2008,27,3:1
11Observation and analysis of the influence of wind waves on air-sea momentum fluxes显示文摘Due to the long-standing lack of understanding the role of wind waves on wind stress at moderate to high wind speeds,a high-frequency turbulence observation system is used in this study to obtain air-sea momentum flux data under pure wind wave conditions based on the tower-based marine meteorological observation platform in the southern Bohai Sea.Moreover,the modulation of wind waves on wind stress under wind speeds greater than 10 m s^(–1)is analyzed.The results indicated that the wind wave states caused by winds from the northwest and northeast are different under the influence of cold air,resulting in different wind stresses and drag coefficients.The wind stress increases with an increasing wind speed,reaching its maximum value when the northwest wind is nearly 20 m s^(–1),while the extreme value of the drag coefficient is basically the same when the northwest wind speed is the maximum and the northeast wind wave significant wave height is the maximum.The drag coefficient increases with an increasing wind speed within the range of 10–15 m s^(–1),reaching saturation at 15 m s^(–1).The critical wind speed is smaller than other observed results.Further analysis showed that wind-induced turbulent stress deviates from the observed values,and the degree of deviation depends on the wind speed and wave state,with a greater deviation caused by strong winds and waves.The wave-induced stress can correct the negative deviation between wind-induced turbulent stress and the observed value,and the drag coefficient calculated based on the modified wind stress tends to be close to the observed value overall.Sheng CHEN Yuhuan XUE Baoshan YANG Yongqing YU Fangli QIAO 2023Science China Earth Sciences2023,66,7:1
12Examination of interannual variability of sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean using the physical decomposition method显示文摘The physical decomposition method suggested by Qian(2012)is used to examine the interannual variability of sea surface temperature(SST)and anomaly(SSTA)in the Indian Ocean(IO)for the period 1945-2003.The monthly mean SSTs taken from the global ocean reanalysis produced by the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation(SODA)are decomposed into four terms.The first term is the zonally averaged monthly climatological SST([Tt(φ)]),which features relatively warm surface waters in the tropical IO and relatively colder surface waters over the southern IO.This term also has a relatively low SST pool between the Equator and 20°N.The SST at the center of the pool in summer is about 1-2℃lower than in spring and autumn.The second term is the spatially-varying monthly climatological SSTA(Tt*(λ,φ)),due mainly to the topographic effect and seasonal variation in wind forcing.The values of Tt*(λ,φ)are negative over the western coastal waters and positive over the eastern coastal and shelf waters in the tropical and northern IO.The third term is the zonally-averaged transient SSTA([T(φ,t)′]Y).The largest values of[T(φ,t)′]Y occur over the subtropical and mid-latitudes of the IO,which differs from the SSTA in the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean.Time series of zonally and meridionally averaged T(φ,t)′γin the tropical-subtropical IO is strongly correlated with the Indian Ocean basin-wide(IOBW)mode.The fourth term is the spatially-varying transient SSTA(T(λ,φ,t)Y*′).The REOF analysis of the fourth term demonstrates that the first REOF is correlated strongly with the South Indian Ocean Dipole(SIOD)mode.The second REOF is correlated strongly with the equatorial Indian Ocean dipole(IOD)mode.The third REOF is highly correlated with the tropical IOBW mode.Xingrong Chen Yi Cai Fangli Qiao 2017Satellite Oceanography and Meteorology2017,2,1:1
13Arctic sea ice concentration and thickness data assimilation in the FIO-ESM climate forecast system显示文摘To improve the Arctic sea ice forecast skill of the First Institute of Oceanography-Earth System Model(FIO-ESM)climate forecast system,satellite-derived sea ice concentration and sea ice thickness from the Pan-Arctic IceOcean Modeling and Assimilation System(PIOMAS)are assimilated into this system,using the method of localized error subspace transform ensemble Kalman filter(LESTKF).Five-year(2014–2018)Arctic sea ice assimilation experiments and a 2-month near-real-time forecast in August 2018 were conducted to study the roles of ice data assimilation.Assimilation experiment results show that ice concentration assimilation can help to get better modeled ice concentration and ice extent.All the biases of ice concentration,ice cover,ice volume,and ice thickness can be reduced dramatically through ice concentration and thickness assimilation.The near-real-time forecast results indicate that ice data assimilation can improve the forecast skill significantly in the FIO-ESM climate forecast system.The forecasted Arctic integrated ice edge error is reduced by around 1/3 by sea ice data assimilation.Compared with the six near-real-time Arctic sea ice forecast results from the subseasonal-toseasonal(S2 S)Prediction Project,FIO-ESM climate forecast system with LESTKF ice data assimilation has relatively high Arctic sea ice forecast skill in 2018 summer sea ice forecast.Since sea ice thickness in the PIOMAS is updated in time,it is a good choice for data assimilation to improve sea ice prediction skills in the near-realtime Arctic sea ice seasonal prediction.Qi Shu Fangli Qiao Jiping Liu Zhenya Song Zhiqiang Chen Jiechen Zhao Xunqiang Yin Yajuan Song 2021Acta Oceanologica Sinica2021,40,10:1

16Contribution of surface wave-induced vertical mixing to heat content in global upper ocean显示文摘Compared with observations,the simulated upper ocean heat content(OHC)determined from climate models shows an underestimation bias.The simulation bias of the average annual water temperature in the upper 300 m is 0.2℃lower than the observational results.The results from our two numerical experiments,using a CMIP5 model,show that the non-breaking surface wave-induced vertical mixing can reduce this bias.The enhanced vertical mixing increases the OHC in the global upper ocean(65°S–65°N).Using non-breaking surface wave-induced vertical mixing reduced the disparity by 30%to 0.14℃.The heat content increase is not directly induced by air-sea heat fluxes during the simulation period,but is the legacy of temperature increases in the first 150 years.During this period,additional vertical mixing was initially included in the climate model.The non-breaking surface wave-induced vertical mixing improves the OHC by increasing the air-sea heat fluxes in the first 150 years.This increase in air-sea heat fluxes warms the upper ocean by 0.05–0.06℃.The results show that the incorporation of vertical mixing induced by nonbreaking surface waves in our experiments can improve the simulation of OHC in the global upper ocean.CHEN Siyu QIAO Fangli HUANG Chuanjiang SONG Zhenya 2020Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,2:0
