| 1 | OBSERVATION AND MODEL ANALYSES OF POSITIVE CLOUD-TO-GROUND LIGHTNING IN MESOSCALE CONVECTIVE SYSTEMS显示文摘The analyses of spatial and temporal characteristics of positive cloud-to-ground(CG)lightning for four mesoscaleconvective systems and two severe local convective systems in 1989 and 1990 show that positive CG flash rate usuallyhas two peak values.The major peak occurs during the developing stage of the storm and most of the positive CGflashes originate at the lower part of the storm.The minor occurs during the dissipative stage of the storm and most ofthe positive CG flashes originate at the upper part of the storm,especially in the region of the wind divergence in thestorm anvil.The positive CG flash rate is almost an order of magnitude larger in the developing stage than in thedissipative stage.The appearing time of the peak of negative CG flash rate is in accordance with that of the valley of pos-itive CG flash rate.The higher the intensity of the radar echo,the higher the positive CG flash rate.Most of the positive CG flashes oc-cur when the weak echo area is larger,and mostly originate in the region where the radar echo intensity is about 10dBzand in the back region of the moving storms.The spatial distribution of the positive CG flashes is much more dispersivethan that of the negative.The mesoscale analysis reveals a bipolar lightning pattern.The mean bipole--length reaches itsminimum during the mature stage of the storm and reaches the maximum during the developing stage of the storm.The vertical distribution of the charge density is calculated by a one-dimensional charging model.Then,we discussthe producing condition of the positive CG lightning and forming cause of charge structure mentioned above. | Yan Muhong Guo Changming Qie Xiushu Ge Zhengmo Zhang Guangshu Lanzhou Institute of Plateau Atmospheric Physics,Academia Sinica,Lanzhou 730000 | 1992 | Acta meteorologica Sinica1992,6,4: | 16 |
| 2 | Study of charge structure and radiation characteristic of intracloud discharge in thunderstorms of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau显示文摘The comprehensive observations on lightning discharges were conducted in Naqu area of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in summer of 2002. The electric structures of thunderstorms and the characteristics of lightning discharges at initial stage were analyzed by using the observation data. The results show that most of intracloud (IC) lightning flashes were polarities inverted in thunderstorms with tripole electric charge structure and occurred between negative charge region located in the middle of the thunderstorm and positive charge region located at the bottom of the thunderstorm. The radiation characteristics of discharge processes in cloud with longer lasting time involved in Cloud-to-Ground (CG) lightning flashes were similar to that of IC discharges.A lot of radiation pulses were produced in these discharge processes. | 3 | Observation and study on the whole process of cloud-to-ground lightning using narrowband radio interferometer显示文摘A narrowband radio interferometer has been developed and used to locate the entire sources of VHF radiations from a negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning discharge which contains 19 strokes. This system uses five antennas to form an array consisting of short- and long-baselines along two or- thogonal directions. The system error which comes from frequency conversion is reduced by phase detection through direct high frequency amplifying. An interactive graphic analysis procedure is used to remove the fringe ambiguities which exist inherently in interferometry and to determine the direction of lightning radiation sources in two dimensions (azimuth and elevation) as a function of time at a time resolution of microsecond orders. With the developed system, the whole progression process in time and space of a lightning flash can be reconstructed. In this paper, combining the synchronous data of electric filed change and VHF radiation, the whole processes of an example negative CG flash have been studied in detail. It is found that the preliminary breakdown event of the CG flash started from negative charge region and exhibited firstly a downward pregression and then an upward propagation. There were very intense and continuous radiations during stepped leaders which became much stronger when the first return stroke began. In contrast, there were less and only discrete radiations during dart leaders. Stepped leader and dart leader may transform to each other depending on the state of the ionization of the path. The progression speed of initial stepped leaders was about 105 ms?1, while that was about 4.1×106 and 6.0×106 ms?1 for dart leaders and dart-stepped leaders, respectively. M events produced hook-shaped field changes accompanied by active burst of radiations at their begin- nings. Followed these active radiation processes, M events appeared to contact finally into conducting main discharge channels. The mean progression speed of M events was about 7×107 ms?1, greater than that of the dart leaders and dart-step leaders. | 4 | Red sprites over thunderstorms in the coast of Shandong Province,China显示文摘Red sprites, different from lightning flashes occurring in the troposphere, are large and brief dis-charges which appear in the altitude range from about 40 to 90 km above large thunderstorms and are usually caused by cloud-to-ground lightning discharges (CGs). A total of 17 sprites over two thunder-storms were first observed during the summer of 2007. One of the sprites occurred on July 28 above a thunderstorm in Guan County and the center of the storm was about 272 km from the observation site. The other sprites were recorded at the late night of August 1 and in the early morning of August 2, and the storm center was about 315 km away. All of the observed sprites occurred in cluster, and their appearances were very different, including 'columniform sprites', 'columniform sprites' with angel-like wings, 'carrot sprites', 'dancing sprites', etc. The duration of the sprites varied from a minimum of 40 ms to a maximum of 160 ms with a geometric mean (GM) of 61 ms. The time delay between parental positive cloud-to-ground lightning flashes (+CGs) and the associated sprites varied from 3.4 to 11.8 ms with a GM of 7.1 ms. The ratio of the number of +CGs to the total number of CGs during the time period with sprites was 7 times larger than that when no sprites occurred. | 5 | Large selenium isotopic variations and its implication in the Yutangba Se deposit, Hubei Province, China显示文摘The selenium isotopic ratios have been measured in the Yutangba Se deposit, Hubei Province, China. The results show that the δ 82/76SeNIST values vary from -12.77‰ to 4.93‰, which is the largest Se iso- topic variation found so far in natural terrestrial samples. The sample Ytb-5 of high-selenium carbona-ceous shale has the lightest Se isotopic composition with a δ 82/76SeNIST value of -12.77‰. On the basis of variations of Se isotope in the deposit along with other geological and geochemical evidence, the 'redox model' is suggested to favor the explanation of the occurrence of native Se in the deposit. | 7 | Experimental study on location accuracy of a 3D VHF lightning-radiation-source locating network显示文摘This paper reports the investigation of the location accuracy of a three-dimensional(3D) lightning-radiation-source locating system using sounding balloon measurements. By comparing the information from the balloon-borne VHF transmitter flight path and locations using simple geometric models, the location uncertainties of sources both over and outside the network were estimated. For radiation sources inside the network and below an altitude of 7 km, the horizontal uncertainty was 12–48 m and the total mean value was 21 m(rms), and the vertical uncertainty was 20–78 m and the total mean value was 49 m(rms). Outside the network, the location uncertainties increased with distance. The geometric model showed that range and altitude errors increased as a function of the range squared whereas the range errors increased parabolically with distance, and that was confirmed by the covariance calculation results. The standard deviation was used inside the network and covariance was used outside the network. The results indicated that location errors from a simple geometric model exhibited good agreement with standard experimental data. The geometry of the network, set of measurements, and calculation method were verified as suitable. The chi-square values of the least squares goodness of fit algorithm were verified and the timing error(?trms) of the fitting formula was estimated. | 11 | Genesis of the Nanyangtian scheelite deposit in southeastern Yunnan Province,China: evidence from mineral chemistry,fluid inclusions,and C–O isotopes显示文摘The Nanyangtian skarn-type scheelite deposit is an important part of the Laojunshan W–Sn polymetallic metallogenic region in southeastern Yunnan Province,China. The deposit comprises multiple scheelite ore bodies;multilayer skarn-type scheelite ore bodies are dominant,with a small amount of quartz vein-type ore bodies. Skarn minerals include diopside, hedenbergite, grossular, and epidote. Three mineralization stages exist: skarn, quartz–scheelite, and calcite. The homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions in hydrothermal minerals that formed in different paragenetic phases were measured as follows:221–423℃ (early skarn stage), 177–260℃ (quartz–scheelite stage), and 173–227℃ (late calcite stage). The measured salinity of fluid inclusions ranged from 0.18% to16.34% NaCleqv(skarn stage), 0.35%–7.17% NaCleqv(quartz–scheelite stage), and 0.35%–2.24% NaCleqv(late calcite vein stage). Laser Raman spectroscopic studies on fluid inclusions in the three stages showed H_2O as the main component, with N_2 present in minor amounts. Minor amounts of CH_4 were found in the quartz–scheelite stage. It was observed that the homogenization temperature gradually reduced from the early to the late mineralization stages; moreover, δ^(13)C_(PDB) values for ore-bearing skarn in the mineralization period ranged from -5.7‰ to-6.9‰ and the corresponding δ^(18)O_(SMOW) values ranged from 5.8‰ to 9.1‰, implying that the ore-forming fluid was mainly sourced from magmatic water with a minor amount of meteoric water.
