Association between helminth infections and diabetes mellitus in adults from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic:a crosssectional study显示文摘Background:As a result of epidemiological transition, the health systems of low-and middle-income countries are increasingly faced with a dual disease burden of infectious diseases and emerging non-communicable diseases.Little is known about the mutual influence of these two disease groups. The aim of this study was to investigate the cooccurrence of helminth infections and diabetes mellitus in adults in Lao People’s Democratic Republic(Lao PDR).Methods:We conducted a cross-sectional study among 1600 randomly selected adults aged 35 and older from four different socio-economical and ecological provinces.Information on socio-demographics,risk factors and health conditions was obtained from personal interviews.Clinical assessments including anthropometry(height, weight, waist and hip circumference)and blood pressure measurements were also conducted.Diabetes was classified based on selfreported diagnoses and a point-of-care glycated haemoglobin(HbA1c)test from finger prick blood samples.Stool samples for helminth diagnosis were examined with formalin-ether concentration technique for intestinal parasitic infections. The independent associations of helminth infections with diabetic status and HbA1c were assessed using multiple regression analyses. Results:The prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes was 37.3%and 22.8%,respectively.Fifty-six percent of diabetic cases were undiagnosed and 85%of diagnosed diabetic cases had poor glycemic control.Participants from rural areas and from southern parts of the country had higher infection rates, with Opisthorchis viverrini, being the most common helminth infection(30.5%).We found a positive association between Taenia spp.infections and HbA1c(β=0.117;95%CI:0.042-0.200)and diabetes mellitus risk(OR=2.98;95%CI:1.10-8.05).No other helminth species was associated with glycated hemoglobin. Conclusions:Hyperglycaemia and diabetic rates in Lao PDR are alarmingly high, but consistent with other high rates in the region.Given the high rates of under-diagnosis and poorly-controlled glycaemia in diabetes mellitus patients, routine diabetes screening and treatment is essential for the local healthcare system.Large longitudinal cohorts integrating biomarkers are warranted in the search of causal diabetes mellitus risk factors in the region.Common intestinal helminth infections, including O.viverrini, are unlikely to explain the high diabetes mellitus rates observed. | Nan Shwe Nwe Htun Peter Odermatt Phimpha Paboriboune Somphou Sayasone Malisa Vongsakid Vilayouth Phimolsarn-Nusith Xuan Duong Tran Phoum-Savath Ounnavong Navalone Andriama-Hefasoa Nilun-Done Senvanpan Anousine Homsana Baocher Lianosay Dalouny Xayavong Dimbitsoa Rakotomalala Robinson Phaivanh Bounsavath Phoy-Phaylinh Prasayasith Seng-Davanh Syphan Yi-Xiao Lu Kanchana Thilakoun Xaipa-Song Xaiyaphet Phout-Tasin Vongngakesone Ikenna C Eze Medea Imboden Banchob Sripa Daniel Reinharz Nicole Probst-Hensch | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 1
Prevalence of Schistosoma mono- and co-infections with multiple common parasites and associated risk factors and morbidity profile among adults in the Taabo health and demographic surveillance system, South-Central Côte d’Ivoire显示文摘Background Schistosomiasis remains an important public health problem, also among adults, and infected individuals not treated serve as a reservoir for continued transmission.Despite this fact, evidence on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in adults in Côte d’Ivoire is scanty. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of Schistosoma infection and co-infection with other helminth species and Plasmodium among adults in the Taabo region in the south-central part of Côte d’Ivoire. Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out in April and May 2017 in the frame of the“Côte d’Ivoire Dual Burden of Disease Study”(CoDuBu).A total of 901 randomly selected individuals, aged 18–90 years, provided blood, stool and urine samples for the diagnosis of malaria and helminth infections.Stool samples were subjected to the Kato-Katz technique for detection of Schistosoma mansoni and soil-transmitted helminth eggs, while urine samples were examined for eggs of Schistosoma haematobium and circulating cathodic antigen of S.mansoni.Risk factors and morbidity profiles were assessed using health examination and questionnaires.Multinomial logistic regressions were employed to identify risk factors and morbidity patterns associated with S.mansoni mono-and co-infections.Results The prevalence of S.mansoni and S.haematobium was 23.2%and 1.0%,respectively.Most S.mansoni were mono-infections(81.3%).Independent determinants of S.mansoni infection were young age,low socioeconomic status(mono-and co-infection)and poor hygiene practices(co-infection)(P<0.05).S.mansoni infection was independently associated with higher pain and symptom scores(mono-infection),poor self-rated health and low healthcare use(co-infection)(P<0.05).Conclusions This study showed that adults represent a substantial reservoir of S.mansoni.To sustain schistosomiasis control and improve people’s wellbeing,it is important to expand preventive chemotherapy from school-aged children to adults, coupled with hygiene and health education. | Fidèle K.Bassa Ikenna C.Eze Rufin K.Assaré Clémence Essé Siaka Koné Félix Acka Véronique Laubhouet-Koffi Dinard Kouassi Bassirou Bonfoh Jürg Utzinger Eliézer K.N’Goran | 2022 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2022,11,1: | 0
Public's knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists:a critical issue in eye care service utilisation显示文摘AIM:To assess the public's knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists and identify the factors associated with knowledge.METHODS:The study was a population-based random survey of adults aged 18 years or older conducted in Enugu, south eastern Nigeria, between March and June,2011.Data on respondents' socio-demographics,clinical profile, and knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists were collected using a 28-item questionnaire.Data were analysed using descriptive and analytical statistics.Values of P<0.05 were considered statistically significant.RESULTS:The respondents(P=394) comprised 198 males and 196 females(sex ratio =1.01:1),aged 18-70(30.9 ±10.8) years. The majority of respondents were single(57.4%),possessed secondary education(96.9%),employed(65.2%) and had no health insurance(77.4%).Their clinical profile showed previous eye exam 54.1%,spectacle wear 41.6%and contact lens wear 5.6%.In the multivariate analysis, participants' good knowledge of the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists was significantly associated with educational status(OR:0.32,95%CI:0.23-0.44,P<0.0001,β =-0.988),employment status(OR:1.8,95%CI:1.45-2.25,P<0.0001,β=0.124)and previous eye examination(OR:1.63,95%CI:1.29-2.07,P<0.0001,β =0.549).CONCLUSION:Participants' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics are important predictors of good knowledge. The findings may have implications for all stakeholders in eye care delivery. There is need for knowledge enhancement,by the government and eye care providers, through population-based eye health literacy campaigns. | Boniface Ikenna Eze Obiekwe Okoye Emmanuel Nwabueze Aguwa | 2016 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2016,9,9: | 0

Interrelationship between some morphometric parameters and bodyweight of tank-based cultured African catfish(Clarias gariepinus Burchell,1822)显示文摘Morphometrics and fish bodyweight studies have shown great importance in estimation of productivity and stock assessment for some fish species. Herein, the aim of this study was to identify the morphometric parameter(s) that has most direct correlation with bodyweight of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). The experimental layouts were four groups of experimental units, each group was replicated twice. Morphometric parameters considered in this study were total length, standard length, head length, head width and snout length. Data collected were processed and subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and correlation analyses at 5% significant level. Results revealed significantly high correlations between bodyweight and morphometric parameters, with values ranging from 0.834 to 0.977 (upper and lower limits for total and snout lengths respectively). The results further revealed that relationship between bodyweight and morphometric parameters followed third-degree polynomial, with R2 ranging from 0.700 to 0.969 (upper and lower limits for total and snout lengths respectively). Significant high correlations (>0.85) exist between morphometric parameters selected for this study. In conclusion, in sampling programs of African catfish where the aim is to select fishes with high bodyweights, emphasis should be given to fishes with highest total length. | Ikenna Onyekwelu Chinenye Chukwuemeka Anyadike Nelson Ike Ossai Oji Achuka Nwoke Emeka Leonard Ndulue | 2021 | Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,6: | 0
Analytical study of silane-based and wax-based additives on the interfacial bonding characteristics between natural rubber modified binder and different aggregate types显示文摘The modification of asphalt binder with natural rubber latex(NR)significantly improves the rutting and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures.However,NR-modified binder is prone to low workability and wettability due to its high viscosity. Therefore, this research focuses on examining the influences of silane and wax-based additives on the wettability of natural rubber-modified binders and the binder-aggregates adhesion performances. In this study, experimental and analytical approaches were used. The contact angles of asphalt binder were measured using a goniometer through the sessile drop method with three solvents:deionised water, formamide, and glycerol. The Cþþalgorithm was adopted to compute the surface free energy(SFE)elements of the asphalt binder.Analytical methods were employed to analyse the results based on the Young-Dupre equation, followed by linear regression to establish a correlation between the compatibility ratio(CR)and the SFE components. The results inferred that modified asphalt binders with additives possessed improved moisture resistance, wherein dry work adhesion values were less than 210 mJ/m^(2)under granite interfaces, whereas the limestone interface exhibited higher dry adhesion values of 340 mJ/m^(2)and below.Similar performance results were observed under wet adhesion conditions;with granite wet adhesive values observed below 120 mJ/m^(2),while limestone wet adhesion values were ascertained below 180 mJ/m^(2)for all tested samples and conditions.According to the spread–ability coefficient results, the limestone interface has greater spread-ability than granite interfaces.Meanwhile, compatibility ratio values indicated better compatibility of 1.9 or higher for tested samples under granite interfaces, whereas compatibility values of 1.7 and below were observed under limestone interfaces. | Ashiru Sani Mohd Rosli Mohd Hasan Khairul Anuar Shariff Najib Mukhtar Mohammad Nishat Akhtar Ikenna D.Uwanuakwa Qingli Dai Tracy Leh Xin Wong | 2023 | Journal of Road Engineering2023,3,2: | 0
Paediatric Cancer Care in Abakaliki South-East Nigeria: Challenges and Outcome显示文摘The care of children with malignancy is almost always a feat and is even more difficult in resource-poor settings such as our country Nigeria where several factors present as challenges as seen in other countries of sub-Saharan Africa. In this study,we present our experience in AEFUTHA,over a six-year period. This study aimed at finding out the current prevalence, outcomes and challenging issues leading to poor outcomes. This retrospective study spanned from January 2012 to December 2017.Information was extracted from the patients’case notes using a structured data proforma.Children aged 17 years and below who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria were studied and the sample size was 68.In our study, the prevalence of paediatric malignancy is 2.0%.The outcome was generally poor with a mortality rate of 30.9%,and 60.3%having abandoned treatment at various stages of management. The top-ranking challenges noted included diagnostic problems and late presentation accounting for 19.8%and 17.3%respectively and, poverty and lack of effective treatment and drugs representing 16.0%each.We conclude that there is a need to adopt a multifaceted approach to tackling these challenges to improve outcomes. | Udechukwu Ngozi Patricia Ukoh Uchechukwu Chukwuebuka Nwagha Theresa Ukamaka Nwokoye Ikenna Chidiebele | 2022 | Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology2022,10,3: | 0
Species Distribution and Patterns in a Forest-savannah Ecotone: Environmental Change and Conservation Concerns显示文摘Understanding the dynamics and patterns of biodiversity in transition forests is vital in promoting conservation and addressing environmental change issues. This work focused on elucidating the diversity, structure, and carbon potentials of a forest-savannah ecosystem. To achieve this,8 forest plots that measured 50 m×50 m each was set up in a forest-savannah landscape and used to identify and measure tree species≥10 cm diameter at breast height(DBH measured at 130 cm).Species importance value was used to summarize the biodiversity patterns and the aboveground carbon estimates were elicited with the allometric equation.43 species within 22 families were enumerated and the diversity was generally low(ranging from 1.82-2.5).Species such as Daniellia oliveri(Rolfe)Hutch.&Dalziel,Py-rostria guinnensis Comm.ex A.Juss,Dialium guineense Willd.and Margariteria discoidea(Baill.)G.L Webster were the dominant species, and had the highest importance values of 113.06,55.13,28.16 and 16.95,respectively,while Allophlus africanus P.Beauv.,Annona senegalensis Pers.,Anthonatha macrophylla P.Beauv.,Ficus capensis Thumb.and Lecaniodiscus cupanioides Planch had the least importance values of 0.16 each.Carbon estimates ranged from 16.43172-42.9298 t/Ha.Most frequent species with higher basal areas no doubt contributed much to the carbon esti-mates,but did not have higher capacities in storing carbon.Managing the ecosystem with more carbon-dense species was seen as a suitable strategy for addressing environmental change in the ecosystem and region. | Nwabueze Ikenna Igu | 2023 | Journal of Botanical Research2023,5,3: | 0
NHS staff mental health status in the active phase of the COVID-19 era:a staff survey in a large London hospital显示文摘Background Experiencing a pandemic can be very unsettling and may have a negative impact on the mental health of frontline healthcare workers(HCWs).This may have serious consequences for the overall well-being of HCWs,which in turn may adversely affect patient safety and the productivity of the institution.Aims We designed a study to assess the prevalence of generalised anxiety disorder(GAD),depression and work-related stress experienced by the National Health Service staff in a large tertiary London hospital treating patients with COVID-19 during the current active phase of the COVID-19 era. Methods An anonymous survey was designed with demographic data and three questionnaires. The Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7(GAD-7)and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 were used to assess anxiety and depression, respectively. The Health and Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool was used to assess work-related stress.Staff from multiple specialties embracing cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine, endocrinology, oncology, imaging, anaesthesia and intensive care at our hospital were asked to complete the questionnaire between 25 May and 15 June 2020.Results A total of 302 staff members(106 males and 196 females)completed the survey. The overall prevalence of GAD and depression was 41.4%and 42.7%,respectively.The prevalence of GAD and depression was significantly higher in females than in males and was statistically significant.Nurses were four times more likely to report moderate to severe levels of anxiety and depression as compared with doctors.Work-related stress was also observed to be prevalent in our surveyed population with the following standards:relationships, role, control and change showing a need for improvement. Conclusions Our study presents early evidence suggestive of a high prevalence of GAD,depression and work-related stress in HCWs.It is imperative that coherent strategies are implemented to improve the healthcare work environment during this pandemic and mitigate further injury to the mental health status of the healthcare population. | Ikenna David Ike Matthieu Durand-Hill Eiman Elmusharaf Nicole Asemota Elizabeth Silva Elliott White Wael I Awad | 2021 | General Psychiatry2021,34,2: | 0
