1Enhanced allelopathy and competitive ability of invasive plant Solidago canadensis in its introduced range显示文摘Aims Why invasive plants are more competitive in their introduced range than native range is still an unanswered question in plant invasion ecology.Here,we used the model invasive plant Solidago canaden-sis to test a hypothesis that enhanced production of allelopathic compounds results in greater competitive ability of invasive plants in the invaded range rather than in the native range.We also exam-ined the degree to which the allelopathy contributes increased com-petitive ability of S.canadensis in the invaded range.Methods We compared allelochemical production by S.canadensis growing in its native area(the USA)and invaded area(China)and also by populations that were collected from the two countries and grown together in a'common garden'greenhouse experiment.We also tested the allelopathic effects of S.canadensis collected from either the USA or China on the germination of Kummerowia striata(a native plant in China).Finally,we conducted a common garden,greenhouse experiment in which K.striata was grown in monocul-ture or with S.canadensis from the USA or China to test the effects of allopathy on plant-plant competition with suitable controls such as adding activated carbon to the soil to absorb the allelochemicals and thereby eliminating any corresponding allopathic effects.Important findings Allelochemical contents(total phenolics,total flavones and total saponins)and allelopathic effects were greater in S.canadensis sampled from China than those from the USA as demonstrated in a field survey and a common garden experiment.Inhibition of K.stri-ata germination using S.canadensis extracts or previously grown in soil was greater using samples from China than from the USA.The competitive ability of S.canadensis against K.striata was also greater for plants originating from China than those from the USA.Allelopathy could explain about 46%of the difference.These find-ings demonstrated that S.canadensis has evolved to be more allelo-pathic and competitive in the introduced range and that allelopathy significantly contributes to increased competitiveness for this inva-sive species.Yongge Yuan Bing Wang Shanshan Zhang Jianjun Tang Cong Tu Shuijin Hu Jean W.H.Yong Xin Chen 2013Journal of Plant Ecology2013,6,3:15

3Cost-effectiveness analysis of population-based screening of hepatocellular carcinoma: Comparing ultrasonography with two-stage screening显示文摘AIM: To assess the cost-effectiveness of two populationbased hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) screening programs, two-stage biomarker-ultrasound method and mass screening using abdominal ultrasonography(AUS).METHODS: In this study, we applied a Markov decision model with a societal perspective and a lifetime horizon for the general population-based cohorts in an area with high HCC incidence, such as Taiwan. The accuracy of biomarkers and ultrasonography was estimated from published meta-analyses. The costs of surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment were based on a combination of published literature, Medicare payments, and medical expenditure at the National Taiwan University Hospital. The main outcome measure was cost per lifeyear gained with a 3% annual discount rate. RESULTS: The results show that the mass screening using AUS was associated with an incremental costeffectiveness ratio of USD39825 per life-year gained, whereas two-stage screening was associated with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of USD49733 per life-year gained, as compared with no screening. Screening programs with an initial screening age of 50 years old and biennial screening interval were the most cost-effective. These findings were sensitive to the costs of screening tools and the specificity of biomarker screening.CONCLUSION: Mass screening using AUS is more cost effective than two-stage biomarker-ultrasound screening. 4The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP显示文摘In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. 5Evaluation of remediation process with soapberry derived saponin for removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils in Hai-Pu, Taiwan显示文摘The use of a biodegradable natural plant-based surfactant extracted from soapberry is proposed for the remediation of Ni,Cr and Mn from industrial soil site in Hai-Pu,Taiwan.Batch experiments were performed under variation of fundamental factors(saponin concentration,pH,and incubation time) for metal remediation.Removal of Ni and Mn were increased with increasing saponin concentration(0.015-0.150 g/L),whereas the removal of Cr was increased upto 0.075 g/L saponin.The Ni,Cr and Mn were removed significantly(p ≤ 0.05) at near to the neutral and slightly acidic(pH 5 to 8) conditions.Removal efficiency of Ni(99%) from the soil was found to be greater than that of Cr(73%) or Mn(25%) in the presence of saponin at a concentration of 0.150 g/L at pH 5.The removal percentage increased with incubation time where the removal of Ni was faster than that of Cr and Mn.The result indicates the feasibility of eco-friendly removal of heavy metal(Ni,Cr and Mn) from industrial soil by soil washing process in presence of plant derived saponin.Jyoti Prakash Maity Yuh Ming Huang Cheng-Wei Fan Chien-Cheng Chen Chun-Yi Li Chun-Mei Hsu Young-Fo Chang Ching-I Wu Chen-Yen Chen Jiin-Shuh Jean 2013Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,6:11

8Urbanization reduces resource use efficiency of phytoplankton community by altering the environment and decreasing biodiversity显示文摘Urbanization often exerts multiple effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms,including changes in biodiversity,species composition and ecosystem functions.However,the impacts of urbanization on river phytoplankton in subtropical urbanizing watersheds remain largely unknown.Here,we explored the effects of urbanization on phytoplankton community structure(i.e.,biomass,community composition and diversity)and function(i.e.,resource use efficiency)in a subtropical river at watershed scale in southeast China over 6 years.A total of 318 phytoplankton species belonging into 120 genera and 7 phyla were identified from 108 samples.Bacillariophyta biomass showed an increasing trend with increasing urbanization level.The phytoplankton community shifted from Chlorophyta dominance in rural upstream waters to Bacillariophyta dominance in urbanized downstream waters.Furthermore,phytoplankton diversity and resource use efficiency(RUE=phytoplankton biomass/total phosphorus)were significantly decreased with increasing urbanization level from upstream to downstream.Phytoplankton RUE exhibited a significant positive correlation with species richness,but a negative correlation with phytoplankton evenness.The variation in environmental factors(turbidity,total nitrogen,NH_(4)^(+)-N,total phosphorus,PO_(4)^(3-)-P and percentage urbanized area)was significantly correlated with phytoplankton diversity and RUE.Overall,our results revealed the influence of urbanization on phytoplankton community structure and ecosystem function was due to its altering the environmental conditions.Therefore,human-driven urbanization may play crucial roles in shaping the structure and function of phytoplankton communities in subtropical rivers,and the mechanism of this process can provide important information for freshwater sustainable uses,watershed management and conservation.Yigang Yang Huihuang Chen Mamun Abdullah Al Jean Claude Ndayishimiye Jun R Yang Alain Isabwe Anqi Luo Jun Yang 2022Journal of Environmental Sciences2022,34,2:4

10Therapeutic effect of Guijiajiao (Colla Carapacis et Plastri) on bone regeneration in rats and zebrafish显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of Guijiajiao(Colla Carapacis et Plastri, CCP), the glue of tortoise shell, on bone regeneration in zebrafish and male Wistar rats.METHODS: In this study, we applied in vitro and in vivo models, tissue section analysis, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction to assess the effects of CCP on bone repair. MG-63 cells were used in alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and mineralization assays. Zebrafish and male Wistar rats were used to evaluate the effects of CCP on bone repair in vivo.RESULTS: A simple preparation of CCP promoted osteogenesis in vivo and in vitro, and promoted MG-63 cell proliferation as well as ALP activity and mineralization. In addition, CCP activated Akt and extracellular signaling-regulated kinase pathways and significantly increased the expression of ossification-related genes and proteins such as runt-related transcription factor-2, osteocalcin, and osteopontin. 11Direct observation of interlayer coherent acoustic phonon dynamics in bilayer and few-layer PtSe2显示文摘This work reports the real-time observation of the interlayer lattice vibrations in bilayer and few-layer PtSe_2 by means of the coherent phonon method. The layer-breathing mode and standing wave mode of the interlayer vibrations are found to coexist in such a kind of group-10 transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs). The interlayer breathing force constant standing for perpendicular coupling(per effective atom) is derived as 7.5 N/m,2.5 times larger than that of graphene. The interlayer shearing force constant is comparable to the interlayer breathing force constant, which indicates that PtSe2 has nearly isotropic interlayer coupling. The low-frequency Raman spectroscopy elucidates the polarization behavior of the layer-breathing mode that is assigned to have A1 g symmetry. The standing wave mode shows redshift with the increasing number of layers, which successfully determines the out-of-plane sound velocity of PtSe2 experimentally. Our results manifest that the coherent phonon method is a good tool to uncover the interlayer lattice vibrations, beyond the conventional Raman spectroscopy limit.
