Dynamic chromatin states in human ES cells reveal potential regulatory sequences and genes involved in pluripotency显示文摘Pluripotency,一个细胞的能力区分并且产生所有胚胎的系,定义象胚胎的茎(ES ) 那样的哺乳动物的细胞类型的一个小数字细胞。 | R David Hawkins Gary C Hon Chuhu Yang Jessica E Antosiewicz-Bourget Leonard K Lee Que-Minh Ngo Sarit Klugman Keith A Ching Lee E Edsall Zhen Ye Samantha Kuan Pengzhi Yu Hui Liu Xinmin Zhang Roland D Green Victor V Lobanenkov Ron Stewart James A Thomson Bing Ren | 2011 | Cell Research2011,21,10: | 6
Risk calculators for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients affected with chronic hepatitis B in Asia显示文摘Risk calculators are widely used in many clinical fields, and integrate several important risk factors through the conversion of a risk function into a single measure of risk.Several studies have been carried out to create risk calculators for the prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)in patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB).Most of them were hospital-based,with limited sample sizes and insufficient external validation. These study groups collaborated to establish the REACH-B risk score, which incorporated five clinical variables to predict HCC risk. This risk score was then validated ininternational clinical cohorts.Evidence suggests that quantitative serum HBsAg level provides additional predictability of HCC,especially in patients with low levels of hepatitis B virus DNA.This novel marker was incorporated into a risk calculator and was internally validated. This tool will hopefully be externally validated in the near future.Risk calculators can be used to support clinical practice, and to establish preventive measures;several'off-label'extension usages have also been implemented.Albeit beneficial, several precautions and discussions should be noted in using the risk calculators. The future development of risk calculators for CHB patients can be extended by applying them to additional CHB-related outcomes, and by incorporating emerging risk parameters. | Hwai-I Yang Mei-Hsuan Lee Jessica Liu Chien-Jen Chen | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,20: | 5
Mobility in China,2020:a tale of four phases显示文摘2020 was an unprecedented year;with rapid and drastic changes in human mobility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand the variation in commuting patterns among the Chinese population across stable and unstable periods,we used nationwide mobility data from 318 million mobile phone users in China to examine the extreme fluctuations of population movements in 2020,ranging from the Lunar New Year travel season(chunyun),to the exceptional calm of COVID-19 lockdown, and then to the recovery period. We observed that cross-city movements;which increased substantially in chunyun and then dropped sharply during the lockdown, are primarily dependent on travel distance and the socio-economic development of cities.Following the Lunar New Year holiday, national mobility remained low until mid-February,and COVID-19 interventions delayed more than 72.89 million people returning to large cities.Mobility network analysis revealed clusters of highly connected cities, conforming to the social-economic division of urban agglomerations in China. While the mass migration back to large cities was delayed, smaller cities connected more densely to form new clusters.During the recovery period after travel restrictions were lifted, the netflows of over 55%city pairs reversed in direction compared to before the lockdown. These findings offer the most comprehensive picture of Chinese mobility at fine resolution across various scenarios in China and are of critical importance for decision making regarding future public-health-emergency response, transportation planning and regional economic development, among others. | Suoyi Tan Shengjie Lai Fan Fang Ziqiang Cao Bin Sai Bing Song Bitao Dai Shuhui Guo Chuchu Liu Mengsi Cai Tong Wang Mengning Wang Jiaxu Li Saran Chen Shuo Qin Jessica R.Floyd Zhidong Cao Jing Tan Xin Sun Tao Zhou Wei Zhang Andrew J.Tatem Petter Holme Xiaohong Chen Xin Lu | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,11: | 3
Mitochondrial neuronal uncoupling proteins:a target for potential disease-modification in Parkinson’s disease Philip显示文摘This review gives a brief insight into the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in the converging pathogenic processes involved in Parkinson’s disease(PD).Mitochondria provide cellular energy in the form of ATP via oxidative phosphorylation, but as an integral part of this process, superoxides and other reactive oxygen species are also produced.Excessive free radical production contributes to oxidative stress.Cells have evolved to handle such stress via various endogenous anti-oxidant proteins. One such family of proteins is the mitochondrial uncoupling proteins(UCPs),which are anion carriers located in the mitochondrial inner membrane. There are five known homologues(UCP1 to 5),of which UCP4 and 5 are predominantly expressed in neural cells. In a series of previous publications,we have shown how these neuronal UCPs respond to 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium(MPP+;toxic metabolite of MPTP)and dopamine-induced toxicity to alleviate neuronal cell death by preserving ATP levels and mitochondrial membrane potential, and reducing oxidative stress. We also showed how their expression can be influenced by nuclear factor kappa-B(NF-B)signaling pathway specifically in UCP4.Furthermore,we previously reported an interesting link between PD and metabolic processes through the protective effects of leptin(hormone produced by adipocytes)acting via UCP2 against MPP+-induced toxicity. There is increasing evidence that these endogenous neuronal UCPs can play a vital role to protect neurons against various pathogenic stresses including those associated with PD.Their expression, which can be induced, may well be a potential therapeutic target for various drugs to alleviate the harmful effects of pathogenic processes in PD and hence modify the progression of this disease. | WL Ho Jessica WM Ho Hui-Fang Liu Danny HF So Zero HM Tse Koon-Ho Chan David B Ramsden Shu-Leong Ho | 2012 | Translational Neurodegeneration2012,1,1: | 3

Medical student depression and its correlates across three international medical schools显示文摘BACKGROUND Medical students have high rates of depression, anxiety, and burnout that have been found to affect their empathy, professional behaviors, and performance as a physician. While studies have examined predictors for burnout and depression in the United States (US), no study, to our knowledge, has compared depression in medical students cross-culturally, or has attempted to examine the effect of factors influencing rates including burnout, exercise, stress, unmet mental health needs, and region. AIM To examine rates of depression in three international cohorts of medical students, and determine variables that may explain these differences. METHODS Convenience samples of medical students from three countries (US, China, and a Middle Eastern country whose name remains anonymous per request from the school) were surveyed in this observational study. Using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and a modified Maslach Burnout Inventory, depression and burnout were examined among medical students from the three cohorts (n = 473). Chi-square test and analysis of variance were used to examine differences in demographics, behavioral, and psychological variables across these three schools to identify potentially confounding descriptive characteristics. Analysis of covariance compared depression and the emotional exhaustion component of burnout identified through Principal Component Analysis across countries. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the impact of demographic, behavioral, and psychological variables on screening positive for depression. RESULTS Medical students from the Middle Eastern country had the highest rates of positive depression screens (41.1%), defined as a PHQ-2 score of ≥ 3, followed by China (14.1 %), and then the US (3.8%). More students in the Middle Eastern school had unmet mental health needs (50.8%) than at the medical school in China (34.8%) or the school in the US (32.8%)(Pearson chi-square significance < 0.05). Thus, PHQ-2 scores were adjusted for unmet mental health needs;however, the Middle Eastern country continued to have the highest depression. Adjusting for PHQ-2 score, medical students from the US scored the highest on emotional exhaustion (a measure of burnout). Demographic variables did not significantly predict medical student depression;however, lack of exercise, unmet mental health needs, stress, and emotional exhaustion predicted nearly half of depression in these cohorts. In comparison to the US, coming from the Middle Eastern country and China predicted higher levels of depression. CONCLUSION Depression rates differ in three international cohorts of medical students. Measured factors contributed to some observed differences. Identifying sitespecific prevention and intervention strategies in medical student mental health is warranted. | Jessica A Gold Xinran Hu Gan Huang Wan-Zhen Li Yi-Fan Wu Shan Gao Zhe-Ning Liu Mickey Trockel Wan-Zhen Li Yi-Fan Wu Shan Gao Zhe-Ning Liu Robert M Rohrbaugh Kirsten M Wilkins | 2019 | World Journal of Psychiatry2019,9,4: | 2
Highlights of the 2nd International Symposium on Tribbles and Diseases: tribbles tremble in therapeutics for immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer显示文摘The Tribbles(TRIB) family of pseudokinase proteins has been shown to play key roles in cell cycle, metabolic diseases, chronic inflammatory disease, and cancer development. A better understanding of the mechanisms of TRIB pseudokinases could provide new insights for disease development and help promote TRIB proteins as novel therapeutic targets for drug discovery. At the 2 nd International Symposium on Tribbles and Diseases held on May 7–9, 2018 in Beijing, China, a group of leading Tribbles scientists reported their findings and ongoing studies about the effects of the different TRIB proteins in the areas of immunity, metabolism, fundamental cell biology and cancer. Here, we summarize important and insightful overviews from 4 keynote lectures, 13 plenary lectures and 8 short talks that took place during this meeting. These findings may offer new insights for the understanding of the roles of TRIB pseudokinases in the development of various diseases. | Bing Cui Patrick A. Eyers Leonard L. | 10 | Electron transfer mediator PCN secreted by aerobic marine Pseudomonas aeruginosa accelerates microbiologically influenced corrosion of TC4 titanium alloy显示文摘Titanium alloys possess excellent corrosion resistance in marine environments, thus the possibility of their corrosion caused by marine microorganisms is neglected. In this work, microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC)of TC4 titanium alloy caused by marine Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated through electrochemical and surface characterizations during a 14-day immersion test. Results revealed that the unstable surface caused by P.aeruginosa resulted in exposure of Ti_(2)O_(3) and severe pitting corrosion with maximum pit depth of 5.7μm after 14 days of incubation.Phenazine-1-carboxylate(PCN),secreted by P.aeruginosa, promoted extracellular electron transfer(EET)and accelerated corrosion.Deletion of the phzH gene, which codes for the enzyme that catalyzes PCN production, from the P.aeruginosa genome, resulted in significantly decreased rates of corrosion. These results demonstrate that TC4 titanium alloy is not immune to marine MIC,and EET contributes to the corrosion of TC4 titanium alloy caused by P.aeruginosa. | Dan Liu Hongying Yang Jianhui Li Jiaqi Li Yizhe Dong Chuntian Yang Yuting Jin Lekbach Yassir Zhong Li David Hernandez Dake Xu Fuhui Wang Jessica A.Smith | 2021 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2021,,20: | 1

Metallurgy at the Crossroads: New Analyses of Copper-based Objects at Tianshanbeilu, Eastern Xinjiang, China显示文摘Tianshanbeilu is the largest Bronze Age site in eastern Xinjiang, China. Stretching across the entire second millennium BC, it performed a prominent role in connecting the Hexi corridor, Central China and the steppe. A further insight into the metallurgical tradition and the metal supply network is of vital importance to improve our understanding of its multi-connected nature. This paper offers a new set of chemical and isotopic data on the copper-based objects at Tianshanbeilu, including alloying elements, trace elements(impurities) and lead isotopes. Combining the concentrations of arsenic and antimony reveals that arsenic was introduced to copper partially due to the use of specific minerals tethrahedrite-tennantite. Lead isotopes demonstrate that multiple sources of copper were employed at Tianshanbeilu and a majority of them are characterized by common lead, which appears rather different from those of the Central Plains and the Hexi corridor, but highly consistent with local ores. Surprisingly, one object at Tianshanbeilu contains the well-known highly radiogenic lead. This object undoubtedly marks the westernmost boundary of the distribution of the highly radiogenic lead. We also anticipate that more lead isotopic analyses in NW China will further contribute to the study of the highly radiogenic lead in Central China. | LIU Cheng LIU Ruiliang ZHOU Pengcheng LU Chun YANG Zengxin A.Mark POLLARD Peter HOMMEL MA Jian CUI Jianfeng Peter BRAY TONG Jianyi Jessica RAWSON | 2020 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2020,94,3: | 1

Different outer membrane c‐type cytochromes are involved in direct interspecies electron transfer to Geobacter or Methanosarcina species显示文摘Direct interspecies electron transfer(DIET)may be most important in methanogenic environments, but mechanistic studies of DIET to date have primarily focused on cocultures in which fumarate was the terminal electron acceptor. To better understand DIET with methanogens, the transcriptome of Geobacter metallireducens during DIET‐based growth with G.sulfurreducens reducing fumarate was compared with G.metallireducens grown in coculture with diverse Methanosarcina. The transcriptome of G.metallireducens cocultured with G.sulfurreducens was significantly different from those with Methanosarcina.Furthermore, the transcriptome of G.metallireducens grown with Methanosarcina barkeri, which lacks outer‐surface c‐type cytochromes, differed from those of G.metallireducens cocultured with M.acetivorans or M.subterranea, which have an outer‐surface c‐type cytochrome that serves as an electrical connect for DIET.Differences in G.metallireducens expression patterns for genes involved in extracellular electron transfer were particularly notable.Cocultures with c‐type cytochrome deletion mutant strains,ΔGmet_0930,ΔGmet_0557 andΔGmet_2896,never became established with G.sulfurreducens but adapted to grow with all three Methanosarcina. Two porin–cytochrome complexes,PccF and PccG,were important for DIET;however,PccG was more important for growth with Methanosarcina.Unlike cocultures with G.sulfurreducens and M.acetivorans, electrically conductive pili were not needed for growth with M.barkeri.Shewanella oneidensis, another electroactive microbe with abundant outer‐surface c‐type cytochromes, did not grow via DIET.The results demonstrate that the presence of outer‐surface c‐type cytochromes does not necessarily confer the capacity for DIET and emphasize the impact of the electron‐accepting partner on the physiology of the electron‐donating DIET partner. | Dawn E.Holmes Jinjie Zhou Jessica A.Smith Caiqin Wang Xinying Liu Derek R.Lovley | 2022 | mLife2022,1,3: | 1
